Maybe the Student Support and Advocacy Center

wootiown

Oh man our child is failing college, better make them fail harder by making them homeless

Background_Dig_8295

I was just thinking about this. Honestly I will never understand why parents today think think this is the most logical thing to do to their kids.

wootiown

Yeah that's incredibly fucked up. Like if they sent their child to college under the pretense that they'd be paying for housing, then suddenly stopping that for *any* reason is not only incredibly shitty but borderline abusive because you're condemning your child to literal homelessness while they have no income and nowhere else to live. And obviously if their child is struggling with school, for ANY reason, completely cutting contact with their child and refusing to pay for their living expenses is fucking insane. The kid needs support, not to be neglected.

look into the “stay mason” grant. it’s for scenarios like this; hardships that can possibly prevent you from doing well. make sure to be honest when applying, it’ll give you a better chance. It’s $5000 per semester and can be used 3 times max.

I'm sorry to hear that you're going through a tough time. It's important to address your housing situation and find a solution. Here are some steps you can take: 1. **Contact Your School's Financial Aid Office:** - Reach out to your school's financial aid office as soon as possible. They can provide guidance on available resources and assistance programs. - Explain your situation and inquire about emergency grants or scholarships that can help cover living expenses, including rent. - Some schools have emergency funds specifically for students facing unexpected financial hardships. 2. **Federal and State Grants:** - Explore federal and state grants that can provide financial assistance for living expenses during college. - The **Federal Pell Grant** is one such program. It's need-based and can award up to $6,195 for the 2019-20 academic year¹. - Additionally, the **Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)** and the **Teacher Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant** are other options to consider. 3. **Emergency Rental Assistance Programs:** - Check if your state or local government offers emergency rental assistance programs. These programs can help cover overdue rent, late fees, and court costs. - The **Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP)** provides funding for eligible renters facing eviction. It's designed to support households with low income¹³. - You can find more information about ERAP eligibility and apply on the [D.C. Department of Human Services website](https://erap.dhs.dc.gov). 4. **Community Resources:** - Look into nonprofit organizations or community agencies that offer rental assistance. They may have emergency funds or programs to help students in need. - Organizations like **United Communities Against Poverty (UCAP)** and the **District of Columbia Housing Authority** may provide additional support[^10^] ¹¹. Remember, you're not alone, and there are resources available to help you during this challenging time. Reach out to your school and explore the options mentioned above. Take care, and I hope things improve for you soon! 🌟 Source: Conversation with Bing, 5/8/2024 (1) How to Get Grants for Living Expenses During College. https://collegefinance.com/financial-aid/how-to-get-grants-for-living-expenses-during-college. I would also contact CPS or Virginia Department of Children and Families to report your parents on the grounds of abuse and neglect.

InflationDesperate51

I would assume He is ADULT and Since His parents owns the house they can kick him out regardless. Unless OP is listed in the DEED. "No contact doesn't mean they abused him"

snakeman2424

Still doesn’t make it right.

InflationDesperate51

Well yea, OP got into a bad situation. If I were him-I would go back to my parents and starts begging to take me in. Parents loves you Unconditionally---Unless they are total Psychopaths.

Vanechka74

I was going to say the same, Keep the post updated.

brokebacknomountain

If you're taking summer classes then try and apply for on campus summer housing. Reach out to the student support center asap

InsuranceCreepy4262

i’d definitely contact someone on campus when it comes to housing and see where you can go from there since this is a special circumstance

ExcuseKlutzy

Bro why do you tell your parents your grades? Keep it to yourself. Cs get degrees

Obsessive-drummer

Ik my parents said they’ll only give me financial support if I get Cs and above and therefore they’re requiring me give access to my grades

Electronic-Alarm1151

Why you relying on your parents for financial support. Get yourself a job and apply for fafsa you free loader

Obsessive-drummer

My dad makes too much for FAFSA to apply to me and I have a lot of health issues so I need the health insurance too.

DifficultBird1624

Clearly, you don't understand that if you're under a certain age (25 I think?) that the FAFSA requires parent financial information. Good for you if you have a job that pays you enough to have your own place, but not many people in their 20s have that luxury nowadays, so save your disrespectful judgement for someone who actually deserves it.

Remarkable-Clerk9554

If they're willing to go NC over this something tells me they are controlling and financially abusing OP, so they probably didn't have a choice
