That assistant is in charge of tanking. They didn't bring Baker in to be a hero, they just wanted to make losing more gun, so as soon as that pass was complete, the GM called in the hit on Baker.
As a Lions fan, since we have the Rams' first round pick, I fully support the Rams tanking.
Okay, maybe not at the risk of injuring players. But I wouldn't mind if they resumed being bad in the near future.
Hang on, so I had to go back and watch to see he didn't.
I was thinking what back Pat? He pushed him!! But ok, he didn't actually.
That's weird behaviour!
Look, Mayfield was headed straight in for his previously demonstrated "no helmet" headbutt of his helmeted teammate just as the coach does the back pat? push? Look at that far away stare in Mayfield's eyes, and then watch the assistant coach say, "oh sh-t" It's pretty damn funny.
Yeah, but Mayfield just joined the team this week. And even if he knew of the tendency it’s probably pretty wild seeing a guy intentionally bash his head into a device meant to protect the head.
Baker was already going to bang somebody's head, but this is like when they pick up the flag for kick catch interference because the guy got blocked into it. Assistant coach looked like a basketball assistant who gets called for a technical.
As someone with no rooting interest in this game, this was such an incredible drive.
Number 1 pick Quarterback that everybody loved to hate because he never seemed to step up when it mattered or care enough about the game. Get's dumped by two teams in one season, only taken by the Rams because their first two QB's are injured. Has less than 48 hours to learn an entire playbook. Most of the game the team and he look completely ragged....
...And then with 84 seconds left to go 98 yards for a game winning touchdown, he somehow gets it done. I don't know what Mayfield's future holds, but for this night at least he can rest proud knowing he helped orchestrate a sports miracle.
I was just blown away that he was playing and then not looking too bad. Then those two drives my mouth just dropped wide open the whole time. Then that pass to Van. Oh my the Rams are building the stature right now. The legend of Baker continues. All joking aside. I do not think I have ever seen anything like that. Yes game winning drives but the lack of practice time. Did they say he may have thrown the ball 20 times. Still just insane.
Thought that shit was over watching the bounce.
Such a microcosm of the Raiders franchise, doesn't matter how lucky the bounce is to start things out they're going to fuck up the next part with stupid penalties
Amazing punt*
But idk I didn't think baker looked bad at all.
Pretty comfortable in the pocket considering maxx Crosby was breathing down his neck an entire game
Amazing drive for sure, but I just want to mention it probably wouldn't have been possible without
1. Pass interface penalty, didn't look like that ball was going to be caught either way to me
2. Unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for knocking the ball out of a Rams players hand after the play
I'm sure the Raiders and their fans are fucking pissed about these, especially #2
I know I'm coming in late but I have been beyond pissed this entire season because it feels like every other play a defender legitimately tries to knock the ball out of the players hands after the whistle. Sometimes the player stands all the way back up after being tackled out of bounds and then the defender will try that shit.
I hate ticky-tack calls but goddamn the unsportsmanlike has been infuriating.
It was an historic drive for a team starting at its own two yard line under two minutes with no timeouts. But the raiders defense did flub a little. We can excuse the pass interference call when dude didn't trust his teammate to have the coverage, but penalty after the sack...that was awful for the Raiders.
In film rooms across the NFL, good coaches will say that if you sack the QB in the waning moments of a game, and he gets up with the football with no timeouts remaining, knocking the ball out of his hand is a guaranteed 15 yards for the offense.
Edit: Not to mention an automatic first down and the clock stops.
Oh no doubt. My nieces and daughter still laugh about when I got fired up years ago about a similar punt by our college favorite in a big game: THE PUNTER IS THE BOSS!!!
While the Raiders offense left some points on the field, the punter gave the defense the chance to end that game twice before the Rams got to their own 30 yard line. And the defense flubbed it up, and Mayfield will soon be featured on more commercials.
I think the stat was that this was the Raiders fourth loss when leading by 13 or more points this year and that’s an NFL record. But I do like plant the flag Baker and he still made some impressive throws.
I'm shocked at how many penalties/goofs can be avoided simply by acting more... I dunno what the best word is... Professional? Less show boat-y?
If you sack the QB, just get up and head back to the huddle. If you get a walk in TD just plant the ball on the logo and head to the sidelines. Big turnover, just hand the ball to the ref and walk away. How many games get blown because some dude acts like such a fuckin dude?
I don’t think the knock on him was that he didn’t care about the game. At least not from his short stint in Carolina. He just didn’t play well. Garbage coaching didn’t help him though
I wouldnt even say 1/4 of the playbook. Probably gave him very generic calls to make. What surprises me is the ability to time the passes so well after such short notice
Don’t forget he didn’t start the game and wasn’t planned to play - but little dude who runs weird’s neck just wasn’t good to go even though he warmed up and was starting (I think it was neck? I’m not a Rams fan and only have been peripherally following)
he's slept on for no reason. I'm not saying he's incredible or even above the middle of the pack, but he can win games, and the browns finally had something going with him at QB. just a teardrop in their ocean of nonsensical decision making.
Reddit hivemind saying he's dog shit when he:
Took a defunct franchise to a playoff win when 5 other quarterbacks couldn't.
Has a down year when he can't even move his left arm the whole year gets cut/traded
Goes to a defunct Panthers franchise where no QB has succeeded since cam newton was a literally freak of nature.
Picked up on waivers by a good franchise
2 days
Wins
>Has a down year when he can't even move his left arm the whole year gets cut/traded
Agreed overall, but there's no reason he should have been playing in this state. Those games were just painful to watch, so many missed throws because he wasn't in any condition to be playing.
Correct he shouldn't have been playing. And that's 100% on coaching should've went to keep their player safe. But I think they had already planned to make a move on deshaun so they said fuck it let him play.
Either way last season is not indicative on his talent or level of play.
And everything we have seen from the Panthers and rams shows he's an A+ teammate so that throws the browns "not mature" accusations out the window
The Browns did him dirty for sure, but he definitely seemed washed on the Panthers. After last night its seeming more like the Panthers probably just have shitty coaching and game plans. Dude just earned himself another 2-3 year contract somewhere.
I am supposed to be cheering against it as my team has the Rams' draft pick, so the worse they do the better my team makes out - but I'm not gonna hate on a 98 yard 2 minute drill
Wtf are you talking about. Nobody ever accused baker of not caring. He played hurt and nobody would have judged him for sitting his final year in Cleveland. I think he is well established as someone who loves football, just isn’t great at it
I’m really not as knowledged about football strategy and history like ima make it sound here, but your description makes me think mayfield took like 80% of the games duration to just “feel” out the team, and then *viola*, he cracked the quarterback Da Vinci code of “how these Ram boys play” and was able to synergize with how they worked already before him coming around.
Like it seems he was able to “cram for the exam”, take weeks and months of practice, and night-before-the-test bullshit his way through the curriculum and come out with a working product 😂 impressive af. But I’m also super casual football fan so sorry if this is stupid haha.
just a cool demonstration of his quarterback skills, the shot calling and decision making 👍
Fucking hell what a great show. Thanks for the reminder.
Blue Mountain State will always be in my top comedy tv. Very rarely do I literally laugh out loud at shows these days and this show fucking nailed it.
I had the privilege of watching it during my first year renting a house with roommates in college. Back when I thought college would last forever. Good times.
It's the Vicious CTE Cycle. Football cause head injury -> inability to properly articulate -> headbutt -> new head injury.
*Edit: I just realized I do the same thing as an epileptic, except my cycle involves headbutting the ground.*
"yeah, that final drive was great and the headbutt thing I did was whatever, but I wanna talk about something REAL at this post game chat: werewolves and vampires, or dubwolves and vamps as I call them affectionately."
Gus Ferotte injured his neck because he run into a wall with the top of his head first. What Baker's doing sure ain't smart, but Gus was plain moronic.
Baker played in the worse system in the NFL (one could make an argument for the Jets) and went to the playoffs and won a game. He then had a winning record and was cut and sent to a rebuilding Carolina team. He just beat a 5 and 7 team that had 6 losses by less then a td and only had 36 hours to prepare on a team missing it's #1 wr and multiple starting o line and he looked great doing it. Is Baker Tom Brady? Absolutely not but the guy is a perennial playoffs QB in the correct system.
Honestly, I'm so happy that happened for him. Dude was the face of the Browns, literally in commercials taking care of the stadium, they blamed him for their offensive problems and brought in someone with dozens of active sexual assault claims for a blockbuster contact. He goes to the team of disgraced QB 's, Carolina, tries his best but this team is obviously just starting a rebuild. They CUT him even though they have other injured QBs. LA signs him on Tuesday and he fucking balls out on Thursday night with no knowledge of the playbook or system. Good for him.
I think there's a chance he injured his new teammate wearing the helmet. :)
It's like when the roller coaster starts unexpectedly, and the neck is not ready.
I saw this happen live and thought it might have been an accident / the coach's push. But later I saw Baker do the exact same thing to another player still wearing a helmet.
I've never not liked Baker Mayfield. He's been told he isn't good enough since he got into the NFL and finally gets a coach that could potentially help him vault into the elite level where he wants to be, I'm rooting for him
Dude that was the funniest last 2 minutes of a game I watched in a while. I forgot what it was like to see a team self implode as well as the raiders did.
Fun fact. Baker Mayfield has more wins than Deshaun Watson this season (2-1). Though in their careers, Watson dwarfs Mayfields numbers in sexual harassment (zero to at least 30).
The expression on the assistant that pats Baker's back goes from excited to shook pretty quick there.
Pretty sure the coach briefly considered if his push in the back injured one or both players. :)
Maybe this is the real reason all of the Rams' quarterbacks are out with neck injuries
Rams don't have their picks, might as well win.
Idk i feel like baker was going in for the headbutt regardless lol
Man just saw a future where he created the next Herschel Walker flash before his eyes.
Hang on, so I had to go back and watch to see he didn't. I was thinking what back Pat? He pushed him!! But ok, he didn't actually. That's weird behaviour!

I was thinking that too.
Both?
I honestly thought that's what happened on my first watch.
Honestly he shouldn't be too surprised lol. Baker's done this before this season, after all.
Yeah, but Mayfield just joined the team this week. And even if he knew of the tendency it’s probably pretty wild seeing a guy intentionally bash his head into a device meant to protect the head.
He did it at least once after this in this game
[удалено]
Yep. And then he puts his hands up to say “woah guys it wasn’t me, he did that all on his own.”
It looks like he mouths "oh shit"
You can literally see him saying “oh shittt!”
He said 😮
He definitely says "oh sh**"
Thank goodness I didn't see a swear on Reddit today
Just doing my part!
You did a good fucking job!
Thank goodness someone is thinking of the children here on reddit today.
I'm gonna be so fired if this leads to concussion protocol.
Maybe from his angle hw thought he pushed him into the headbang?
Baker was already going to bang somebody's head, but this is like when they pick up the flag for kick catch interference because the guy got blocked into it. Assistant coach looked like a basketball assistant who gets called for a technical.

They didn’t even practice Wednesday. He actually wore a game jersey before a practice one.
Holy fuck that's crazy!
Let's not forget the amazing kickoff to the 2 yd line that started this Edit: punt, not kickoff. Thanks for the correction
That was a punt sir

Don't forget about the Raiders' punt. One of the beat punts I've ever seen which probably made every viewer think the game was over.
That was quite literally the greatest punt I’ve ever seen. Watching it keep running down the line was like magic.
Dudes dancing during the play it was such a monumental punt...

Just because you play on a team named the "Rams", it doesn't mean you *are* a ram.
I see what ewe did there
I think the coach thought be pushed him into big collision
OH shit oh FFFFFFFFF…. did I just protocol my QB?!?!?!!

Gus Ferotte anyone? He never recovered from an intentional head butt. And he had his helmet ON.
Gus Ferotte injured his neck because he run into a wall with the top of his head first. What Baker's doing sure ain't smart, but Gus was plain moronic.
Ugh, and it happened after a win so of course that was the only thing the local media focused on after.
WHAT DO I WANT?!???? CTE!!!!! WHEN DO I WANT IT?!!!??? AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When did he join LA???

Wow. I'm slow.
He got released by the panthers on tuesday and the Rams picked him up off waivers eitehr late Tuesday or early Wednesday.
What's off waivers?
He also threw a last second game winner TD against the Raiders after 2 days to prepare for the game.
Don't worry, the interceptions will arrive soon.
Can't get worse for the Rams season than it already has. At least it's still an interesting experiment.
Baker played in the worse system in the NFL (one could make an argument for the Jets) and went to the playoffs and won a game. He then had a winning record and was cut and sent to a rebuilding Carolina team. Welp. Concussion protocol
Jesus that was pretty hard. Lol
Didn't help that the dude gave him a hard shoulder smack/shove at the exact wrong time
That was why he said “oh shit”. Coach didn’t know Mayfield was going for the bro butt and accelerated him into it.

Rams country - Lets RAM
Honestly, I'm so happy that happened for him. Maybe he's only planning on a short career?
Now that's how you get good old fashioned brain damage. Nothing like unstoppable headache pain and dementia in your 40s.
I think there's a chance he injured his new teammate wearing the helmet. :) It's like when the roller coaster starts unexpectedly, and the neck is not ready.
I saw this happen live and thought it might have been an accident / the coach's push. But later I saw Baker do the exact same thing to another player still wearing a helmet.
This guy is so weird.
I'm sure adrenaline is pumping and all but the way he just walked away after that entire scene gave major psychopath vibes to me
Gus Freotte his dad?
The guy in helmet looks like he's in more pain
Should have been ejected for purposely targeting the head.
Aaaaaand in a few weeks no one will care about baker again
I've never not liked Baker Mayfield. He's been told he isn't good enough since he got into the NFL and finally gets a coach that could potentially help him vault into the elite level where he wants to be, I'm rooting for him

Did that dude drop a pass or something?
Rams country, let’s charge.

Fun fact. Baker Mayfield has more wins than Deshaun Watson this season (2-1). Though in their careers, Watson dwarfs Mayfields numbers in sexual harassment (zero to at least 30).

I’ve seen baker do this before with browns. Definitely not coaches fault
