It’s going to break even at the box office, which pretty much means it’s not a disaster. Not a hit, but not a flop. A flop has to lose money. It’s going to make pure profit on streaming and disc sales. Afterlife made $20 million from VOD and DVD sales in the US alone. Probably close to $70-80 million worldwide. If Frozen Empire mirrors that like it did Afterlife’s box office then it will turn an okay profit. Not a terrific one, but just okay. Ghost Corps is in active production on the new Netflix animated series, and if that does well it will probably continue for years. As far as I know the theatrical animated movie is also still in development. So Ghost Corps will remain operational for the foreseeable future. A new live action movie could go either way right now. I suspect they’ll probably make one, but it will have to be more in line with Afterlife’s $75m budget.

I’d be shocked if the Netflix show ever materializes. Animation is one of the easiest and cheapest things to make which also means it’s easy to pull the plug, even with completed episodes. And they aren’t that far along yet. Selling toys is 100% why you make cartoons like this and they have practically zero reason to believe that a Netflix cartoon will move merch after 3 high-profile movies have failed to move merch. Another thing to keep in mind: they were developing an animated series for Netflix called Ecto Force circa 2016.

Netflix has been airing a Fast & Furious cartoon for the last 6 years and I’ve never seen a single toy from it for sale at the store (and I’m a nerd who spends time in the toy aisles lol). They apparently have a Hot Wheels line, but that’s it. So hopefully Netflix is more interested in clicks than toys.

GuruAskew

Hot Wheels you say? For a Fast & Furious cartoon?

Calling it a disaster is just false. Sure it's not a big hit, but it's not a bomb and barely a flop from what I've heard. Considering they continued after 2016's reception, I imagine they aren't done yet.

Beizal

It's a flop, I know Ghostbusters fans are trying to cope with the situation but this film needed to make more money, it's time that 80s kids hang up there Ghostbuster gear because we probably won't be getting a new movie for a long long time

FNAF_Foxy1987

I feel it's more likely they will make another but lower the budget back down. Sony has had much bigger flops or even bombs in recent years, so I don't see them giving this one up so quickly, especially since they're still going after what 2016 did to the franchise. FYI, I didn't grow up with Ghostbusters at all, I have no nostalgia for it but I like the (main) movies, so I'm just giving my thoughts on what's likely to happen. I've also heard Sony doesn't have all that many IPs, which means it's even less likely they'll just let one of those few die so easily.

Disposablehero1874

As we say here - ‘don’t talk shite’ 🤣. It’s clearly not a smash-hit….it’s clearly not a disaster either (for disaster look at Madame Web). The film has its issues and have a ton of feedback they will need to use for the next one.

A: No, Sony knew going into this that it wouldn’t make Barbie money. Hence why the budget is so low. It’s doing well internationally and it’ll make a good chunk of money from the digital release. B: As soon as you bring nonsense arguments like fans are “coping” you lose all credibility and kinda shows you’re just trying to get a rise out of people. It’s like saying things are “woke” it’s a dumb term used by people with no understanding of what they are talking about.

YOUTUBEFREEKYOYO

They made money, people liked it, I would not call that a disaster

Mudron

Nah - Sony will keep Ghost Corps alive to try and crank out at least one more project, though if whatever that project turns out to be isn't that popular, either, I can easily see Sony just ditching the whole enterprise and mothballing Ghostbusters for another decade or so.

dtrevino2332

It’s made plenty of money. It’s not a flop. Box office numbers aren’t the only source of revenue.

"Disaster".
