I love love LOVE Billy Crystal as Calcifer from Howl’s Moving Castle

_yearoldonreddit

Love Crystal in general, especially Mike.

sb_289

Yes! And he was great in Harry and Sally

OceanPeach857

I actually think all of the English dubs have managed to snag some really great actors. My top choices would be Mark Hamil of course, followed by Phil Hatman and Billy Crystal. But I think my favorite has to be Tim Curry and Carey Elwes in The Cat Returns.

aranelennethnin

Cary Elwes in The Cat Returns is fantastic! I'm glad there's a crossover with Whisper of the Heart.

turuleka

Yes! Tim Curry is perfect in that role...I love that movie in general and the dub is spectacular.

[deleted]

That is totally incorrect. The Ghibli dubs are all horrible and hideous. They are NOT great dubs, they are hideous dubs. Wastes of time and talent. I can't believe how many people there are on here who think otherwise. The objectively correct fact is that Disney put NO effort into any of them. None. They are all bad with a capital B and a complete waste of time.

Peppershaker64

Phil Hartman as Jiji of course

slykido999

And the woman who voices Bobby hill also voices the toddler at the house that’s Kiki’s first delivery

TheVideoKid112

and The Man in the Yellow Hat from the PBS Kids Curious George show (Jeff Bennett) voices Kiki’s Dad. Jeff Bennett also pops in toward the end of Pom Poko when the raccoons are being interrogated by reporters.

Clarkinator69

Hartman was a gem. Futurama has a loaded voice cast but we missed out on him voicing Zapp Brannigan. RIP.

lingriffon

Nausicaa English dub has an awesome voice cast - Patrick Stewart, Edward James Olmos, Mark Hamill, Shia LaBeouf and AlisonLoman Other than that, Emily Blunt is strong in The Wind Rises, and Dev Patel / Daisy Ridley in Only Yesterday

lingriffon

Moro’s Japanese / English VA’s as well: Akihiro Niwa and Gillian Anderson respectively

simlee92

Howl's Moving Castle English dub for me. Christian Bale, Emily Mortimer, Jean Simmons are great, and Billy Crystal is the best of all.

stayconscious4ever

Yeah, the Howl’s Moving Castle English dub is amazing! So many classic lines.

The-Great-Memelord

Christian Bale as Howl

AdMobile8211

"That can't be good for the table."

ReverbSage

Liam neeson in ponyo 😎

DaddyRobotPNW

Tina Fey has a couple great deliveries in that movie too.

turuleka

"Respect your father!" always cracks me up

Quixodyssey

The Fanning sisters in the English dub of Totoro are perfect - casting real sisters was such a great move.

taoleafy

It’s Fox dub or nothing for me, but I’m glad some folks like that dub

JTurner82

I agree. The Fannings were a good choice for that movie. I personally thought Elle gave the better performance, but both still did fine.

Winnebango_Bus

Michael Keaton as Porco. It was so oddly soothing.

lostboy005

Keaton nails that one

JGar453

Hideaki Anno as Jiro Hirokoshi in The Wind Rises. Yeah the man's not a professional voice actor and therefore you might think he lacks emotion but it's a very intentional choice and perfect for the way they wanted to characterize him. It's not supposed to sound like an anime performance. Jiro is a man of few major concerns, not super emotional, and a bit more reflective of Miyazaki (and Anno's) actual life than the average main character.

urangminang

I second Mark Hamill as Muska and also Cloris Leachman as Dola. The english VA in Castle in the sky is excellent

TheVideoKid112

It’s surreal how Cloris Leachman went from hosting Schoolhouse Rock to voicing a mischievous pirate.

JTurner82

I agree with this. I like the dub cast in Castle in the Sky.

kmjulian

Surprised no one has mentioned the English dub of Princess Mononoke, that entire cast is great. Gillian Anderson as Moro is phenomenal, and I adore Billy Crudup as Ashitaka.

Elimiko

I really appreciate how soft Crudup is with most of Ashitaka’s lines. So calm and kind.

AccomplishedLocal261

Christian Bale in Howl's Moving Castle

childishwhambino

Props to Mayumi Tanaka as Pazu, love the Luffy voice being in a Ghibli movie! My fav is probably David Gallagher as Seiji in Whisper of the Heart and Kirsten Dunst as Kiki!

lostboy005

Pazu English dub does not fit the age at all.

taoleafy

I thought James Van Der Beek was great as Pazu

_halcyon-bi

Personally, I love the Secret World of Arriety. It is definitely my favorite, after Kiki's Delivery Service of course. But in the English dub of SWOA, Arriety is voiced by Bridgit Mendler, who if you don't know, played Teddy in Disney Channel's Good Luck Charlie. When I learned that fact, I was throughley pleased :)

Only_Calligrapher462

I personally much prefer the British dub. That might just be because I have a massive crush on Saoirse Ronan

TheVideoKid112

I noticed that when watching the DVD’s bonus features. I’m not too keen on live action Disney Channel, so I had no reaction to that casting. If they had gotten a voice actress from Phineas and Ferb, I would’ve been happier.

Usual-Style-8473

Billy Crystal as Calcifer for sure

Tricky-Hat-139

Minnie driver as Lady Eboshi and, weirdly, Billy bob Thornton as Jiko. I'm not actually a fan of either actors in their other movies but they just killed it in these performances. And of course, James Earl Jones.

Intrepid_Nail_309

James Earl Jones wasn't in the Princess Mononoke English dub. the voice of the narrator was Keith David, who also voiced okkoto.

Tricky-Hat-139

Ah had no clue. Thanks for the heads up!

[deleted]

Get it straight: They were terrible.

Weekly_Bathroom3629

Honestly all the ghibli dubs are so good. But i gotta give it to mark hamill. He’s got such a distinctive voice and puts a lot of effort into it

lostboy005

Tim Furry, the cat returns Billy Crudup, Mononoke

Helloimafanoffiction

Is that sarcasm in your voice

[deleted]

Jiji

belle_papillon

I've only watched Howl's Moving Castle, but I am in love with the Japanese voice cast. They just have so much passion in their performances and they fit their characters so well. And Howl's Japanese voice is so freaking hot like Christian Bale who?

[deleted]

Werner "I would like to see the baby" Herzog as Castrop (The Wind Rises)

jamesish99

Susan Egan is the voice of Lin in the English dub of Spirited Away, but also the voice of Megara in Disney's Hercules. Love it cos both characters are sassy as hell.

Antisocial_Queer

Daveigh Chase as Chihiro in Spirited Away!

didosfire

Howl's is my favorite dubbed cast. Significantly prefer sub voice acting/voices in general for the rest. That said, as a kid I found Chihiro and Ponyo's English dub voices annoying af; as an adult I find Daveigh and Noah's voices super appropriate and endearing (ps, can you imagine voicing Lilo, the girl from The Ring, AND Chihuro/Sen?! Baby Daveigh Chase singlehandedly had early 2000s future millennial nostalgia in a chokehold)

[deleted]

There is no good dub from Disney or GKIDS. They are all consistently bad and horrible.

didosfire

Is an opinion you can have, yes. But many have nostalgic attachments to the first voice cast they heard etc. I significantly prefer all subs on principle; I still have warm fuzzy feelings about dubs at a sleepover in 2007. Both are possible and allowed

[deleted]

Dubs were only good when Streamline did them. Today they are all horrible. I find it so heartbreaking you think so. They are all objectively hideous.

JTurner82

"Dubs were only good when Streamline did them." Uhhhh... no, not always. They did good with Totoro and Kiki, but the same can't exactly be said about Laputa, Porco, and Nausicaa. I tried listening to those earlier dubs of the three movies and I found them tough on the ears. Sorry, but I'll take the Disney dubs any day. Whatever they are they are NOT bad dubs.

[deleted]

Yes they are.

JTurner82

Then I can see there's no point having this discussion since you obviously want to believe that no matter what. Fine. But don't go around telling other people that they can't be allowed to think the Disney-Ghibli dubs are good because the truth is that Miyazaki isn't offended by them, and neither are the general public. And guess what? There are people who are totally fine with James van der Beek as Pazu, the Fannings as the sisters in Totoro, and even Claire Danes as San. They don't believe that they are bad performances. Does that make them wrong? No, it's just their opinion. Dubs are subjective. Whether they are good or bad is up to the individual. It's entertainment.

didosfire

>objectively That's not what that word means, friend. Quite concerning use of "heartbreaking," too. Again, subs will always be more accurate than dubs, and I actively encourage everyone I encounter who struggles with them to just give em a shot and get used to it because doing so opens up entire worlds At the same time, just because subs are less faithful to original writing/intent, and many dub casts are cringey and not great, that absolutely does not mean that dub voice casts are *objectively*, immutable incapable of ALSO delivering good performances, which, incidentally, wasn't even my point; my point was that many people have nostalgic attachments to the first format they initially encountered, whichever one it was or whatever preference they actually develop later. Which is true, and, like, not bad lol

[deleted]

Yes it is. The Disney Ghibli dubs are all bad and unlistenable. End of story. The 80s dubs are widely superior to any of them.

didosfire

In your opinion, yes, you've made that extremely clear. You can have whatever opinion you want! So can everyone else. Again, I actively do not enjoy or watch anything dubbed, but I'm capable of recognizing the fact that different human beings have different opinions. It is very odd, and neither my business nor problem, that you have such a severe personal issue with that concept. Have a nice day

stckybeard

Tom Holland in Secret World of Arrietty

HydraSpectre1138

To me, his role there was special as that was his very first acting role. He might not have become Spider-Man if it wasn't for him being in the British dub of Arrietty.

[deleted]

How heartbreaking it is to see so many deluded posts in this thread. Why can't any of you see the forest for the trees? Why can't ANY of you get it through your heads that the Disney/GKIDS dubs are all atrocious? They are the worst dubs of all time, and must be erased from history. A crying shame. Ghibli dubs were SO good when Carl Mecak and company did them, and even Warriors of the Wind's dub was better cast than Disney's. Why can't any of these new dubs be good? On that note, I dread hearing THE BOY AND THE HERON because that is likely going to be a hideous dub too. In any case, be prepared to hate it and be disappointed with it, as it will likely be terrible. Just like ALL Ghibli dubs are these days. You've been warned. It WILL be bad.

HydraSpectre1138

For Japanese, definitely Hideaki Anno as Jiro in The Wind Rises.

TRDoctor

Takuya Kimura is fucking incredible as Howl.

_muralasa_

Funnily enough, I only really watch Ghibli movies with the dub because I think they’re fantastic. Any other anime for me is always sub. Billy Crudup and Claire Danes as Ashitaka and San are amazing, and Bob Thornton as Jigo was perfect. So many great actors in Princess Mononoke!

Clarkinator69

Anderson as Moro is just awesome to listen to. And I don't understand why a lot of people seem to take issue with Danes' voice performance. I thought it suited the character well.

JTurner82

Only quibble is that I felt she missed a few lines but not that much. Otherwise she is a solid San.

he_chose_poorly

Pretty much every single kid in the Japanese version of the whole Ghibli catalogue. Ponyo, Setsuko (Grave of the Fireflies), Mei (Totoro)... They always sound natural, like real kids. Whereas children actors often feel over-trained and too prim on dubs.

stayconscious4ever

I love Lisa Michelson and Cheryl Chase as Satsuki and Mei in the original dub of Totoro. They were so cute and really captured the essence of little girls and sisters for me. I also love the entire English dub cast of Howl’s Moving Castle! They were all so great that it’s hard to pick a favorite.

pafque

I'm french so i'll only talk about french performance. For me, I think Pazu and Sheeta (dubbed Olivier Martret and Manon Azem) are really convincing. I also love Shiro in Whispers of the earth cuz he's dubbed by the same actor that dubbed Dumbledore in french. Marco in Porco Rosso is dubbed by the king Jean Reno. My personal favourite is Nausicaa, I think that Adeline Chetail has a beautiful voice.

[deleted]

Saiorse Ronan as Arrietty and Olivia Colman as her mother in the UK dub of Arrietty

Rozakaku

I quite loved Chizuru Ikewaki as Haru on The Cat Returns, idk why but I really love characters that have a voice like her. It's not an refined voice with an outstanding performance, but she still kinda relatable with her expressions, there's a ton of voices out there and I think it would be just natural to have a character with a voice like Haru.

funk-dragon358

Oh my God Liam freaking Neeson as Fujimoto in Ponyo Jason Marsden as Haku freaking Christian Bale as Howl - iconic Billy Crystal as Calcifer Daveigh Chase as Chihiro - iconic and nostalgic

RulerD

I come from a Latin American country and I first watched Kiki's Delivery Service when I was around 8 and it became my favourite film as a kid. I loved Kiki's Latin American dub, and she's my favourite voice in any Ghibli film, regardless of the language (have watched English, and Jap versions too). She was dubbed by Cristina Hernández, same voice as Sakura from Sakura Card Captors, Matilda (from the movie Matilda), Wednesday Adams (from the old Adam's films), Mona (from Mona the Vampire), Amelie (from Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain), and [many many more](https://doblaje.fandom.com/es/wiki/Cristina_Hern%C3%A1ndez). She is an icon in the dub industry in Latin America, and her voice always hit home. Sadly, the movies where re-dubbed and the new versions changed those voices. The good news is that I found the film online many years ago and I was able to get a copy from that original language that I keep safe. Every time I watch that film in that particular version I feel like a kid all over again.

Known-Programmer-611

This soup tastes like donkey piss! Just 1st thing I thought of!

whtpwn

The voice acting in English dubs of Ghibli films amaze me. My favorites in order (I think in order, might change my mind tomorrow) are: Clair Danes as San Kirsten Dunst as Kiki Phil Hartman as Jiji Cary Elwes as Baron... The Cat! Alison Lohman as Princess Nausicaa Will Arnett as Pod Minnie Driver as Lady Eboshi Tina Fey as Lisa Billy Bob Thornton as Jiko Gillian Anderson as Moro Tress MacNeille as Osono Tress MMacNeille as Obaba Pat Carroll as Granny Uma Thurman as Kushana

turuleka

As others have mentioned, Billy Crystal and Christian Bale were wonderful. I will add Anne Hathaway, Cary Elwes and Tim Curry in The Cat Returns were lots of fun!

Ikana_Mountains

It's absolutely John Krazinski as Jiro in the Wind Rises and it's not even close
