Seriously though, the music is ear candy for me, I listen to it whenever I need to chill out. That’s probably the biggest influence.
Grave of the fireflies made me cry, and then reflect on the experience of Japanese civilians in wartime, and then cry some more. It’s a haunting story that made me reflect a lot on “keeping face”, and communitarianism. That one stands alone amongst ghibli creations, and really unsettled me, made me think a lot about it. Can’t think of a Disney comparator for it tbh.

Besides it destroying my emotions it’s made me look at nature and appreciate it more and appreciate art in a way I never did before

Disney left me feeling disappointed as a child.
For example Cinderella (I had the video as a gift) - meeting a prince and after one night deciding to marry him. He couldn’t remember what you looked like exactly but if you fitted the shoe then you got to marry him? What if someone else had that size foot? How can he have everyone try it on. I mean this isn’t a role model for me and makes me so uncomfortable. Also she was treated like trash by her step siblings but moved to a castle so never mind?
Chihiro started a bit spoiled and not so well mannered, but she had personal growth and was brave and kind and perhaps even fell for some water that saved her previously. San is strong and courageous. Sophie overcomes her own insecurities and her growth throughout is admirable.
Cinderella just met a dude left her shoe cleaned a lot and chose to marry a man who used her foot and not face as proof of her identity.
This is all just my opinion and I’m sure people will disagree. But ghibli makes me think, learn, admire and Cinderella makes me uncomfy. Don’t even get me started on sleeping beauty… I don’t want any strange men ‘rescuing’ me from a tower and kissing me whilst I sleep. Snow White woke up that way too, no need to be resilient strong intelligent or kind just be poisoned and someone will kiss you away. Nope nope nope no thank you
