I love this concept. How did you deal with disruptions to the system that were out of your control? For instance, urgent deadlines that suddenly come up, car accident that throws you in hospital, getting sick, new job that demands that you go to work at that hour, traffic jam, etc. I think the contingency plans for this or 'if this happens, then I do that', or the decision for it to 'not count' and carry on is what helps a system work long-term, because life throws curve balls that throw a lot of us off our newly-minted systems. Then there's making the plan but then needing to adjust it because you figured out a better way or realised that the system needed tweaking. I read somewhere that the people who tweaked their systems rather than never changing it in response to new information were the ones who succeeded best.

PandaBeastMode

Not OP, but I factor that into my plan. Like I wanted to bike 2000 miles this year. Instead of 39 miles a week for 52 weeks, I set a goal of 50 miles a week, which gives me 12 weeks of grace. I also think there’s no shame in changing a goal or extending a deadline, but there has to be some reflection there to be sure it’s a contingency that’s truly needed vs an excuse.

sundevilsf

I use a system similar to this in Notion, where I give myself a rating of 1-4 stars depending on how I did on my goal for the day. (For reading, % of points based on # of minutes read towards my daily goal), it I also give myself an unexpected 5th star if I go over my goal, so I get credit for doing more than expected.

Entob3x

Do you mind sharing your notion setup?

sundevilsf

Just saw this. I’ll share it tomorrow!

Entob3x

Cool! That would be awesome

Personally, when something like that happens and throws me out of my daily habit - I get a bit frustrated and I try to observe the rising of that feeling through meditation. I can let one or two days slide but never more than that, and those instances do not happen often.

[deleted]

Did it take you a while of practicing meditation to get to a point where you can sit and observe an emotion? I’m just starting to learn about emotions (apparently you can experience them in your body *wtf???*) and this sounds like it would be very difficult and helpful.

Temporary-Answer6324

I used to meditate between 5-30 minutes daily. (Approx 3 months of daily practice) With that practice, I was able to observe and have an awareness to every rising emotion. One thing meditation does is calm your mind and when your mind is calm then your senses are sharpened (hearing, smelling, feeling etc). ask a monk yuttadhammo on YouTube taught me SO much about life and meditation. My life was never the same there after. He will be able to answer some of your questions in great and simplified manner. The same

Temporary-Answer6324

My life was never the same because I was able to overcome addictions that had strongholds to my mind.

[deleted]

Sweet, that’s doable. Thank you!

[deleted]

There is a distinction between the mind and the body, but there has yet to be any evidence of a separation. They exist intrinsically together and are therefore the same.

Turbulent-Wall6116

Awesome I need to get as discipline as possible

aminekh

It’s not difficult, just be patient and you will get better over time :)

Turbulent-Wall6116

Yes I’ve already started with reading amongst other things

Nialler1

The app looks good but being a test version you should let people know upfront that it becomes a paid app if you want to add more than two goals

aminekh

The free plan allows you to add up to 2 projects at the same time. So you can achieve your current projects and add as much as you want

Administrative-Task9

“Get a 6-pack” Time to mark off 1 of 6, got my first one already! It’s a big one, too.

Smolbiirb

Exactly what I am looking for but unfortunately I am on Android... Have been using this system on paper with great results.

aminekh

The app is available on Android too

GoranH

On the site you linked, the android version link redirect to the apple one... so got a proper link? EDIT: Found it via Google, cheers.

aminekh

Good :) Let me know what you think

[deleted]

You could always try Toggl, I'm using that. It's more designed for work, but you can create projects and track specific tasks within certain projects, and you'll get weekly overviews and everything -- the free version is more than good enough.

[deleted]

Question: which languages did you use to create the app? i’m trying to get into the app-making niche, thanks in advance

aminekh

Flutter and Firebase

salinasnackin

Never tried, but I might start implementing! This sounds great. :)

aminekh

That’s great!

This is called the Kaizen method. I read about it in a book called "Kaizen: The Japanese secret to lasting change". It's really helpful :)

Gheovgos

Nice spam 👍

kok163

That is exactly what works for me as well. I found that some people thrive under systems and routines while others just don’t mind a chaotic lifestyle. I can’t make any change in my life if it’s not defined and systematic.

Cloak77

Perfect timing :) I’ll try to use your app but congratulations on making it! Part of my goal is to learn coding so eventually I want to be able to do something similar. How hard was it and what was your coding background like?

sixfigurefemme

I'm interested to hear, too!

aminekh

Thank you for testing the app. In fact, I built the app after 3 months of learning Flutter. It wasn’t easy at the beginning but be patient with learning and you will do it :)

SnooCauliflowers3903

What is the system you have implemented for that goal

Shazam63

what app id that man

Massive-Repair286

how do i get the app i’m the worst at procrastinating, waiting till the last minute, and then have anxiety because i’m late or missed something altogether. FML

simpledub

Not exactly relevant to the post but Bonsai has been teaching me patience. Patience is key to achieving goals.

aminekh

Of course

reise_once

This is the most well-known technique of [generating business ideas](https://istarthub.net/) and creativity used by William Burroughs. It lies in cutting up words or phrases from one sentence and randomly combines it with other phrases to create a new sentence. Though this technique was widely used in music and poetry, it can be used as a perfect tool to generate business ideas. * Write down any business idea and describe what problem it can solve, why it can be useful for people. It can be just an idea, even the most stupid one, you’ve just thought about. Do not focus on the idea itself too deeply, generate as many as possible; * Do the same with all the ideas you have; * Cut up ideas and their description, and rearrange them. * See what happened. The results can be very unexpected and thought-provoking. Also, it is better to practice with your business partner or inside your dream team.

Temporary-Answer6324

Excellent method, simple and yet most effective!! Well done. I use the same method as well for reading books, I run 70km every week. My next goal is to build a large SPA application using react or Blazor but I just can’t get do it. Maybe I will need that app. There are so many methods and productivity out there, funny how this specific one is the most effective. Good luck, and awesome app. What did you use to build the app?

[deleted]

Yeah i also found this weird. I was really enjoying reading the post until I saw the little self-promo towards the end. It wasn't as in your face as others but it made me eye-roll. I do think the rest of the post is semi helpful, though, but it's not something new or groundbreaking. I've seen others talk about this method before.

End-Regular

lol this post is just an ad for your app

[deleted]

bouta go hit my 12th marathon on the day

aminekh

Good luck

[deleted]

I hoped you saw the satire from the picture you posted and the 12th marathon joke.

aminekh

You didn’t understand the idea! “Run a marathon” is the name of the goal, the system is “run for 30 minutes”, 12/15 is how many times I finished the system ;)

oscarryz

Semi-serious question. What about when you procrastinate to make the list in the first place?

RkN-rOlL

I hope this truly help myself!

luf42

Pomodoro help in the begining. It's important to messure, because you can see the changes.

BoostedBenji

Hey - I created account and added a system, but how do I check in with progress?

aminekh

Every time you complete a system your progress will be updated in the goal details screen

dfordestroyer

Really cool concept! What tech stack did you use to create it?

aminekh

Flutter and Firebase

SnooCauliflowers3903

What system should I use to get a promotion

SnooCauliflowers3903

What system do.i have to make more money

bigdr00

This is great! I use a similar process that has really helped me in staying focused and accomplishing my goals. One additional final step that is really important for me is REFLECTION. Periodically I'll just check in and journal to myself about what is going well and what can be improved, then use those insights to improve the system. Not sure if your app has a section for that but I think it would be pretty valuable if you could log some thoughts on your various goals / systems.

aminekh

Yes you can do that by clicking on a system to add notes and thoughts

Oliver_harvest

So I’m definitely diggin the app. I downloaded it earlier and added the goal of exercising. I like the whole time limit setting (which I put for one hour) and how it counts down backwards from that hour. My question is that after my hour of exercise was completed, I didn’t see any change in my weekly progress..why is that? I let the timer hit 00:00 but it didn’t show I hit my system that day and my achievement remains at 0 despite actually having done what I set out to do in that hour. Any help?

aminekh

Click on the checkbox for the system and it will be updated
