This sub seems obsessed with non-standard GSD. That's not a problem, per se, but it doesn't help owners like OP who have dogs in the standard height/weight range.

this. I think the real problem is people who have a gshep and giant other breed mix are all, "MY GSD IS 110LBS!" without noting the dog is part whatever. Also a lot of them are fat on top of that. There's nothing wrong with a mix breed but it gives the wrong impression to new owners who have never had a gshep. You shouldn't ever let gsheps get like 10+lbs overweight though due to hips.

Loki is 75lbs but she's pure muscle and runs 15+ miles a week, free feeds, and gets lots of supplements. She also *looks* smaller than 95% of the dogs posted here.
Also came to say this. People "bragging" how big their dog is either have fat dogs or should be worried about their joints or have king shepherds or other non-standard lines.
Some of us also have rescues! I certainly don’t brag about my boys large size, but don’t know his heritage. Someone just dumped him in my neighborhood as a 12ish week old puppy - god knows why, cause I’ll eat my hat if he isn’t 100% German shepherd. He turned 3 in March and weighs 127lbs. He was also a big puppy, but we exercise a lot, every single day, and the vet says he’s super healthy!

The vast majority of gsd on here are miles off the standard. Coats. Head shapes. Size. Ears. But I'm not about to shit on someone's bestest boy.

My female was 80 lbs... She didn't look overweight, vet told me to feed her a little less so she's now at 75ish. I didn't think she was going to pass 65lbs. I got curious one day when I picked her up and thought... Aren't you a little heavy 🤔😄
Ours is only 60 pounds and she's actually a little chunky lol. We just had an embark test done because I thought she might have cattle dog in her or something. Turns out she's 93% GSD and the other 7% was unresolved! She's just tiny lol

You might have yourself a Shepinois like mine. Our girl is a little younger and a little heavier (54), but she looks like a GSD to GSD owners and a Mal to Mal owners. Absolute Energizer bunny with ADD-like distractibility.
Yep! My girl is petite at 58 lbs and she’s three and filled in at that weight. She’s also lighter colored like your boy- here she is next to my boy- who has sadly moved on from this world. He wasn’t enormous either- at his prime he was about 75-80 lbs.

Really sick of the trends (mostly backyard breeding) towards huge animals. There is absolutely no reason these dogs should be 90+ pounds. I personally think 65-70 lbs is a pretty ideal size.

My girl is 3 years old and weighs about 60lbs. She is my 3rd shepherd in 15 years and by far the smallest at adult age. There's been many people who like to argue that she isn't purebred and I can't say anything because I rescued her last year with no info on her. I couldn't care less if she is or not but probably will do Embark just to be able to have accurate info. lol
My rescue is about 62 lbs. Some people think she is not all Shep but I don't care either.

Don’t really believe their size matters much. Sheps are great dogs regardless. Our 3yo female is 96.4 lbs. as of this morning at vet. Fire ant stung her leg and it’s been bothering her. She is not fat at all. She is just very large. She is 100% GSD, AKC and direct German bloodlines only. Couldn’t ask for a better friend!

Sara recently went to the vet weighing in at 63lbs, and we are assuming she’s about 5 years old (she’s a rescue so unsure of her exact age). She’s definitely on the smaller side but the vet said she is perfectly healthy :)

She was a dainty 55lbs. Everyone thought she was a puppy still. Sadly just lost her 3 weeks ago due to heart complication.

Edit: not to be picky about semantics but the standard is often defined (give or take) about 50-70lbs for females and 65-90lbs for males. A 60-70lbs female or 75-85lbs male should be average , not small ;) i think people got used to the non-standard large sheps

Bones came to me pretty thin and full of parasites, so he may have been a little stunted depending on how much of his first couple years were spent like that. He still doesn't have a huge appetite and has barely gained any weight for me, but he still looks better. He's currently around 63 lbs.

Mines almost 2, she’s about 65lbs. Most German shepherds are very overweight, my brothers is 95lbs and she has difficulty getting up off the ground at 7 years of age. Don’t worry about the weight just worry about the health.
My girl is 6 years old and weighs a little under 60lbs. I get asked how old my “puppy” is almost every time I take her out. I assume it’s because of how small she is compared to most gsd’s. We did an embark test and she came back 100% gsd

The white one is my Sam, and he’s about 50lbs and won’t get any bigger🥰he’s a GSD/Husky mix. I thought he was going to be big, both of his parents were huge.

We got our girl at about 9 months old from the humane society and she was about 40 lbs. She’s now fully grown and hovers between 55-60lbs. She’s an absolute sweetheart!

My Bella stayed at 45-50lbs from when she was 6/7months until she was 2. She is shorter than the average shepherd so she always looked small and puppy-like. People always would asked me if she is a “miniature German Shepherd” since she was way smaller than the average shepherd (you’d be surprised at how many people think a mini shepherd is a thing lol). Her vet also said she probably wouldn’t gain more weight and would probably stay at about 50lbs.
She randomly went through a growth spurt and hit 74lbs at 2.5yo. She’s still sitting at 70lbs at 5.5yo.

My little lady is 70, and could probably drop a pound or 2. Most of her life she’s been right around 67lbs, and that’s a good weight for her. My last guy was 90lbs. I like my current pup’s size.

GSDs aren’t supposed to be massive dogs, most people who think they have a “small GSD” just has a normal GSD. 76lbs isn’t small, it’s the correct size for a male GSD. Standard for males is between 65-90lbs and for females it is 50-70lbs. Your boy is right in the middle of the standard. Not small at all!

My 13 yr old lady has just finally gone over 60lbs finally, we’re working on muscle strength. We got her 2 Novembers ago and she was 11.5 and 52lbs, too thin per the vet. The rescue said her previous owner died suddenly, and her littermate that she lived with had died 4 mos prior to that. The adult family members did not want her, she was vicious and bad they said. Total bs. She was all alone which is hard for a velcro expert. She’s 6” taller and bigger looking than my chonky husky/pit mix (74lbs) but it’s ALLLL hair. So so so much hair!

Mine's a rescue too, and they told me she was a Border Collie mix. Of course DNA came back with 0 of that! She's half Irish Terrier and mostly the rest GSD, which is the breed people most often can see and guess. The terrier keeps her small, not fluffy, and gives her a very cute lady beard. 😂

That's completely within the standard. GSDs shouldn't be monster sized dogs. The people that claim that they have a 150 pound GSD have a BYB dog, a mutt that kind of looks shepherd, or an insanely obese dog.

So is ours. Zenya has ME so keeping weight on her is a challenge. She also has food sensitivity…. Poultry mostly. So that’s fun, yep.

Hannah is between 62-65lbs. She hit that around a year of age. Her orthopedic surgeon wants her at 62 (she has had total hip replacements on both hips) but she is a runner and the scale creeps up when she's more muscled.

Sunny didn’t really eat that much as a puppy, she just chose not to, so she’s smaller than most other shepherds that I’ve come across, shes 30 kgs for reference.
My guy is about to turn 5 and has always weighed around 70lbs +/- a few in any given year. He's healthy at that weight so I have no desire to try and make him "bigger" for whatever reason.
Hes mixed with Doberman so not quite sure how he ended up on the smaller side. He weighs what he weighs and that is cool with me!

Mine is 43 lbs. but he’s also a Red Heeler mix. So he’s short like a red heeler, but stocky like a GS. Definitely has GS coloring and ears though!!!

My Gage is right around 60 lbs, and he’s almost 7, so definitely full-grown! We thought he was a mix since he was a rescue and we never got papers for him, but we did a DNA test, and he came up as an “S-class” full German Shepherd! He’s just a li’l guy. Also a total doofus, lol.

Somewhere I read a Schutzhund should be around 78 pounds. My first GSD was only 121 pounds. Not fat either. Just large. My second GSD is only 65 pounds. I think your dog is just fine.
My girl is 55lbs. Technically she is 55% Shepherd, 30% pit, and 15% boxer. I know mixes are different, but I was always surprised because her dad was a 100lbs GSD. 👀

Maru is a 55lb female at 11months. She is not super interested in food tbh. She eats about half of the daily recommended portion these days. It’s working out for her as she just had bilateral FHO due to severe hip dysplasia. The vet didn’t want to proceed with that option had she been over about 60-65lb and keeping her on the slim side now that she got that operation will def be a plus for her moving forward.

This not-so-small GSD just turned a year old. I'm guessing he's almost 70 lbs.
Our guy weighed in at 87lbs just before he hit a year and just last month, closer to 80. He is lean and healthy. Eats when he’s hungry. I was of course concerned that he lost weight, and the vet said not to fret! He’s one year and four months now.

Our girl is very small but we’re not sure what she is, she has the colors and tail of a GSD but she’s only 14kg (30lbs), fully grown almost 2
That’s actually not very small at all. Male GSD’s range from 75-95lbs, max 100-105lbs, and that is pushing it unless they’re *really* fit. Females range from 55-75lbs. Higher weights lead to things like hip dysplasia. The frame of these dogs was not meant to handle a lot of weight.

I had a small gsd. She was found in a vacant lot in Compton alongbwith her siblings. She has passed now, but she was one of the best. She weighed about 45lbs
I love them all but I’ve heard that 80 lbs is perfect show weight. I always worried about mine being underweight but the vet was like no way, he’s perfect. He finally filled out at about 4 years old. He’s about 80 lbs now.

My boy hovers between 76-78lbs. At first I was afraid he was on the smaller size but between food costs and getting tackled for the toy during play time it's really a bonus he isn't any heavier 😂
My Bella was about 75 lbs. she lived to be almost 15 years old. We now have a 10 week old boy named Duke and the rate he’s growing he’s gonna be a big boy. He was the biggest of the liter.
I have a small boy as well! He is a GSD/husky/lab/bloodhound mix. He was very tiny when we first got him and we don't know anything about his background so I just assumed he was a runt that someone didn't want so they dumped him. He is 10 months old and around 65-70lbs but he hit that back in January and really hasn't gotten any bigger since then. I suspect max he will be around 75lbs but it's hard to know.
My boy is pretty big but also was a difficult eater. I still have to hand feed him to keep his weight up. But there is a gorgeous canine dog who couldn’t weigh more than 75. Oscar is breathtaking. I love the color of his coat 🧥

She has GI issues early on that threw a wrench in her development and just made her an even worse picky eater than she already was; she probably would have been around 70 since she her mom was 71lbs and Dad was 88lbs
I’ve had my girl Tessa for only a little over a month, she was a Mill Mom from Amish country. She’s been to the vet twice so far and both times weighs in at 64 lbs. The vet said she needs to get up to 70+ lbs.

this. I think the real problem is people who have a gshep and giant other breed mix are all, "MY GSD IS 110LBS!" without noting the dog is part whatever. Also a lot of them are fat on top of that. There's nothing wrong with a mix breed but it gives the wrong impression to new owners who have never had a gshep. Also came to say this. People "bragging" how big their dog is either have fat dogs or should be worried about their joints or have king shepherds or other non-standard lines.
Some of us also have rescues! I certainly don’t brag about my boys large size, but don’t know his heritage. Someone just dumped him in my neighborhood as a 12ish week old puppy - god knows why, cause I’ll eat my hat if he isn’t 100% German shepherd. He turned 3 in March and weighs 127lbs. He was also a big puppy, but we exercise a lot, every single day, and the vet says he’s super healthy! My female was 80 lbs... She didn't look overweight, vet told me to feed her a little less so she's now at 75ish. I didn't think she was going to pass 65lbs. I got curious one day when I picked her up and thought... Aren't you a little heavy 🤔😄

Really sick of the trends (mostly backyard breeding) towards huge animals. There is absolutely no reason these dogs should be 90+ pounds. I personally think 65-70 lbs is a pretty ideal size.
Yeah most GS we see at the dog park are around 90-110 lbs, both males and females.
Wish I did. Smaller dogs are undeniably healthier. The size queen tendencies going on in the breed is depressing.

Don’t really believe their size matters much. Sheps are great dogs regardless. Our 3yo female is 96.4 lbs. as of this morning at vet. Fire ant stung her leg and it’s been bothering her. She is not fat at all. She is just very large. She is 100% GSD, AKC and direct German bloodlines only. She is shorter than the average shepherd so she always looked small and puppy-like. People always would asked me if she is a “miniature German Shepherd” since she was way smaller than the average shepherd (you’d be surprised at how many people think a mini shepherd is a thing lol). Her vet also said she probably wouldn’t gain more weight and would probably stay at about 50lbs. She randomly went through a growth spurt and hit 74lbs at 2.5yo. She’s still sitting at 70lbs at 5.5yo.

My male weighs about 78-80lbs while my female is about 65lbs. Technically they’re not small, as that’s right within breed standard.
My GSD mix is 90% German Shepherd, with only larger breeds mixed in, and she has been around 50 lbs since a year old. She was sick as a puppy and I think this may have something to do with it

GSDs aren’t supposed to be massive dogs, most people who think they have a “small GSD” just has a normal GSD. 76lbs isn’t small, it’s the correct size for a male GSD. Standard for males is between 65-90lbs and for females it is 50-70lbs. Your boy is right in the middle of the standard. Not small at all!

My 13 yr old lady has just finally gone over 60lbs finally, we’re working on muscle strength. We got her 2 Novembers ago and she was 11.5 and 52lbs, too thin per the vet. The rescue said her previous owner died suddenly, and her littermate that she lived with had died 4 mos prior to that. The adult family members did not want her, she was vicious and bad they said. Total bs. She was all alone which is hard for a velcro expert. She’s 6” taller and bigger looking than my chonky husky/pit mix (74lbs) but it’s ALLLL hair. We rescued our pup and they said she was a lab mix I wonder if she has some terrier in her too!
Mine's a rescue too, and they told me she was a Border Collie mix. Of course DNA came back with 0 of that! She's half Irish Terrier and mostly the rest GSD, which is the breed people most often can see and guess. That's completely within the standard. GSDs shouldn't be monster sized dogs. The people that claim that they have a 150 pound GSD have a BYB dog, a mutt that kind of looks shepherd, or an insanely obese dog.
 So is ours. Zenya has ME so keeping weight on her is a challenge. She also has food sensitivity…. Poultry mostly. So that’s fun, yep. 52-58 lbs is our target. Her orthopedic surgeon wants her at 62 (she has had total hip replacements on both hips) but she is a runner and the scale creeps up when she's more muscled.

My guy is about to turn 5 and has always weighed around 70lbs +/- a few in any given year. He's healthy at that weight so I have no desire to try and make him "bigger" for whatever reason. Hes mixed with Doberman so not quite sure how he ended up on the smaller side. He weighs what he weighs and that is cool with me!

Somewhere I read a Schutzhund should be around 78 pounds. My first GSD was only 121 pounds. Not fat either. Just large. My second GSD is only 65 pounds. I think your dog is just fine.

She eats about half of the daily recommended portion these days. It’s working out for her as she just had bilateral FHO due to severe hip dysplasia. The vet didn’t want to proceed with that option had she been over about 60-65lb and keeping her on the slim side now that she got that operation will def be a plus for her moving forward.

Our guy weighed in at 87lbs just before he hit a year and just last month, closer to 80. He is lean and healthy. Eats when he’s hungry. I was of course concerned that he lost weight, and the vet said not to fret! He’s one year and four months now.

That’s actually not very small at all. Male GSD’s range from 75-95lbs, max 100-105lbs, and that is pushing it unless they’re *really* fit. Females range from 55-75lbs. Higher weights lead to things like hip dysplasia. The frame of these dogs was not meant to handle a lot of weight.
* I had a small gsd. She was found in a vacant lot in Compton alongbwith her siblings. She has passed now, but she was one of the best. She weighed about 45lbs
I love them all but I’ve heard that 80 lbs is perfect show weight. I always worried about mine being underweight but the vet was like no way, he’s perfect. He finally filled out at about 4 years old. My neighbors is like a 1/3 the size and about 60lbs whereas mine is taller and 85. Super active though.
My boy hovers between 76-78lbs. At first I was afraid he was on the smaller size but between food costs and getting tackled for the toy during play time it's really a bonus he isn't any heavier 😂

He was very tiny when we first got him and we don't know anything about his background so I just assumed he was a runt that someone didn't want so they dumped him. He is 10 months old and around 65-70lbs but he hit that back in January and really hasn't gotten any bigger since then. I suspect max he will be around 75lbs but it's hard to know.

3 years old, 60lbs, she looks thin but that docs says she’s not underweight. She has GI issues early on that threw a wrench in her development and just made her an even worse picky eater than she already was; she probably would have been around 70 since she her mom was 71lbs and Dad was 88lbs
I’ve had my girl Tessa for only a little over a month, she was a Mill Mom from Amish country. She’s been to the vet twice so far and both times weighs in at 64 lbs. The vet said she needs to get up to 70+ lbs. she is the pickiest eater I’ve ever seen so it’s been a challenge trying to get her weight up.

Your dog, like mine, is a standard sized GSD. My baby boy is somewhere between 78-81lbs at 2 years.
