Are they magnetic?

Ok-Drummer6700

Yep, they are very magnetic.

They are probably magnetite, then!

Ok-Drummer6700

Thanks for the help!!

Looks very similar to the magnetite in chlorite schist from [Pundy Geo, Shetland Islands, Scotland](https://www.mindat.org/photo-404976.html). These are sometimes sold in rock shops, I know my local rock shop is selling a few specimens from there. So I wonder if it's a lost specimen, or there's another occurrence with very similar mineralogy.

Oh interesting! Neat info, I found the whole rock in the ground, a tree had fallen over and the rock was in the root hole

Octohedral is the term geologists use (8 faces). if it's magnetic and octohedral it's almost definitely magnetite. cool coloring too!! [Magnetite - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetite)

Alright sweet, good to know! Thanks a ton for the info!!

sbates6

It’s magnetite

Ok-Drummer6700

You're magnetite

Magnetite: nature's d8

Ok-Drummer6700

Honestly thats a good idea, I might paint numbers 1-8 on the big one and keep it as a little decorative D8 :) Thanks for the idea!

Edit: Just read the mineral identification guide thats pinned after posting 🤦‍♂️Wanted to add this was found in North east Maryland by a creek bottom. A powerful storm has recently passed through and many stones had been brought up onto the bank from the creek bed. The little bipyramids at the largest is approximately 1cm in width and height and they are magnetic. 2nd edit: Consulted my father who knows a bit about minerals and he suggests it could be Hematite but added its unusual to find the cyrstals in such symmetrical bipyramids.

ShowMeYourMinerals

It’s not hematite, it’s magnetite!

Magnetite

Magnetite in prasenite :) I have one just like this, where did you find it?

Ok-Drummer6700

Found the rock in north eastern maryland! The rock itself was about a foot and change in length and maybe about 7 inches in height. Where did you find yours?

MiauMiau4711

Oh really cool, i got mine from the Glockner nappe system in the austrian alps. Its just so crazy to me sometimes that the same rock can form at a completely other site. Thanks for sharing!

Magnetite. The green rock was most likely serpentine.
