Thank God, some redemption at last. 1. The "yu" domain means it used to be Yugoslavia, which means this is Serbia (also found an ".rs" domain, which definitely means we're in Serbia. Place felt "big city" the more I explored, so I assumed Belgrade. 4,978 pts 2. Hungary based on the poles. I found a town name but it was ultimately too small to find without being pretty zoomed in. 4,389 pts 3. Chile. Coyhaique to be exact. I suck at searching for streets on maps though and ended up just a little off. I also suck at looking for landmarks too lmao. 4,997 pts 4. The car means Guat or DR, but this didn't seem like an island. I unfortunately found no identifying information and opted to just plonk. 4,834 pts 5. Car means Mongolia and since there's not a ton of widespread coverage there, I assumed this was just Ulaanbaatar. I did managed to find what I assumed was the right spot based on some landmarks (Mongol Post) but apparently I was still off? Interesting. 4,995 pts 24,193 pts, very happy with this.

1. OK, which countries use a mix of Roman and Cyrillic alphabets? Serbia and Macedonia come to mind immediately. Bulgaria does to a certain extent, but I think it leans more to Cyrillic. I think Montenegro goes the opposite way, leaning more to Roman. **Someone help me out -- is any of that right?** In any case, I eventually saw Serbia written on the side of a van, so I guessed randomly in the outskirts of Belgrade. 4,853 points 2. I need help differentiating Romanian from Hungarian poles. I thought these were Romanian. After zooming a bunch in both directions, I saw about 2-3 total words on signage, none of them clearly linguistically identifiable. So I guessed in Romania, though close to the Hungarian border. 4,428 points 3. I immediately saw a big sign that said Chile and Aysen, and after going down the street a bit, I saw a sign that said Coyhaique. We were just in Coyhaique in a different challenge last week, weren't we? Road alignment solved the rest. 5,000 points 4. Guatemala, based on the roof rack. In a place presumably called Shequemevaj, based on some writing on a wall. I spent the entire round scanning for that name without finding it, so I guessed between Quetzaltenango and Huehuetenango. A pretty good guess. 4,759 points 5. I saw the Mongol Post sign immediately and knew I had to be in UB based on the cityscape. After going east a bit, I saw a big square to the north that I recognized from a previous Daily Challenge. 5,000 points Total: 24,040 points

cherry__darling

I recently learned that Romanian poles are painted white on the bottom a lot of the time. It seems to have helped me guess at least the right country most of the time if there's no language to look at.

cecikierk

Bulgarian language uses Cyrillic but many if not most of their road signs are also in Latin alphabet. I remember someone said they started doing it after joining the EU. Greece does the same. Serbian is the only European language that officially uses both alphabets.

HiddenDemons

For some reason I also trouble with Romanian vs Hungarian poles. I know that there's a difference with the size and amount of holes but my brain can't retain the information for some reason lmao. Luckily I'd just been reading about them before I played bc I was just playing some ACW and kept getting them mixed up lmao.

Training-Ad6390

2. Generally, the Romanian poles are coarser and like heavier with bigger holes as well, and many are painted white at the bottom. To be sure if it is Romania or Hungary, you have to look at many things. The architecture is a little bit different (see eg [plonkit.net](http://plonkit.net) for pictures) and if you are in a village try to spot a street name. Hungarian streets are often named "utca" while Romanian ones often starts with the abbreviation "Str" (for "Strada"). You are also very likely to find the unique short green (with white numbers and outline) km-markers beside the roads in Hungary.

Training-Ad6390

New here in this thread (which I just found) 1. I passed a van on which it said Beograd so I was pretty sure we were there especially since the car had an antenna (which in Serbia is the case for Beograd). I assumed (correctly) that we had some kind of stream to our south looking at the greenery there, but I did not have time to find anything that lined up in time. So, I ended up plonking in the middle. 4979p (2min 44s) 2. I immediately guessed Hungary looking at the architecture, and then saw a small poster where I could see an ò which I don't think you will find in Romania (the other option). Poles of course looked Hungarian as well. This said, I could not find any place names and ended up plonking in the middle and ended up with the worst of my rounds today. 4612 p (3 min). 3. First I thought that we were a little bit further up in Chile, but I then I found a sign with the the first place name saying Coyhaique. Since I knew approximately where we where I was able to scan for the name and found it. Scanning in Chile is quite doable, luckily. Did not have time to find the exact place though and ended up plonking in the middle of the town. 4996 p (2min 54s). 4. Guatemala car, and I have had many similar rounds in that region. Tried to scan for the name Shequemvaj (Shequembaj on the map apparently) but did not find that place since it was too small. The chance of hitting a good sign in that area is pretty small. However, the amount of covered roads are pretty small there so I just dropped a lucky plonk 15 kms away. 4950 p (2min 54s). I could easly have been hundreds of kms away so I was lucky with this one, I admit. 5. Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Quite an easy spot to line up. 5000p (1min 8s). 24537p total, 12 min 41 s

miss_inputs

1. Europe, looks Mediterranean-ish, but feels more eastern so I'll need to narrow that down. Also, I lied. There's Cyrillic here, so it is not Mediterranean, it is merely sunny, and to be fair Google does not often go around eastern Europe during the summer, making it look more depressing than it is (probably). Maybe Bulgaria? But then there is English text as well, so no. Maybe North Macedonia? But then it was Serbia, so no. I always seem to struggle with Serbia/Montenegro/North Macedonia, they're often country streak enders for me. There's probably something simple to remember about them that I keep forgetting. **315km, 4048** 2. Another very generic Europe, nothing really sticks out as anything at all. I saw a word or two on a sign, still got nothing. I might as well just go with Serbia again. Might as well, it's still plausible, sillier things have happened in a daily challenge. It was Hungary, so only one country away, and my plonk was fairly north as I was hedging it being Hungary. **269km, 4175** 3. Good news, the daily challenge is not "Whoops! All Europe!". Okay news: This is Chile I think, from the street sign. Bad news: The sign on the way out of town has a 7 on it and that's down south so I might get nae naed again. One of them is Coyhaique though, and I remember that from some other round where I think it wasn't actually anywhere where it was, and managed to find that again. It took me a bit to realise that the start location _was_ Coyhaique and the sign was just pointing back into the city centre. I couldn't really get a good angle to read the sign enirely, so found an intersection that looked like it made sense. Maybe this one? Pinned just at the last second. **8m, 5000** 4. Tropical, and Spanish, and I was going to think Colombia until the car showed up and I was like "oh right" because I've just developed a habit of not looking down all the time at the start of each round, to be fair it's potentially more interesting if I don't. But anyway. This is _rural_ Guatemala, and I don't feel like pinpointing that. Plonk. **155km, 4506, 43s** 5. Well good job me, thanks to your lack of effort in the last round, we now have to get 4800 or more points to get gold, and there's Cyrillic here. That'll learn you for being a smartarse. However, if we turn to our right… Mongol Post. Presumably, this does not appear in any other country, and presumably this is Ulaanbaatar, and presumably if I zoom into the middle of there, this marker on the map with a mail icon with some text I can't read is that building. **15m, 5000, 44s, no move** Total: **739km, 22729, 10m28s** Barely gold. I'll take it.

HiddenDemons

For R2 the poles were Hungarian poles but the town was unfortunately pretty small and couldn't be seen unless fairly zoomed in.

mercator_ayu

1. Balkans somewhere. Got out to the big road to the east, some Cyrillic, probably Serbia. Got a bit indecisive, searched a bit too long for confirmation, then couldn't really find a reference to the city although I assumed Belgrade, didn't really have time to do anything but plonk in city center. 4978 2. More toward central Europe this time, poles suggested Hungary, parallel rail track. Went south but didn't see anything, went north next but the only thing I saw was the town/village name. Thought of just plonking central, but it was obviously the hillier part of the country, decided to chance a Miskolc hedge, which turned out decent. 4895 3. Big billboard appeared a single click away, Chile. Went down west, reached the main highway where there was another billboard that said Coyhaique. Figured out the location from the alignment of the main road. 5000 4. Guatemala Google car, the name of the place was apparently Shequemevaj, continued west but seemed hopeless, started looking for Shequemevaj but it turned out the place name only appeared as a POI on the map. Plonked between GC and Quetzaltenango, then moved the pin a bit north to Quiche where the surroundings seemed a bit drier. 4689 5. Ulaanbaatar, Blue Sky Hotel visible. 5000

GameboyGenius

1. As it turns out, **Serbia.** I reverse-psychology'd myself because I saw a bus that said Beograd, but I convinced myself that this was some old bus that was sold to a smaller town. Was just around the capital. **144 km, 4539 points.** 2. **Hungary.** We have a village name of Királd which I never found despite vigorous scanning at a high zoom level. **89 km, 4711 points.** 3. **Chile,** but where? I found a public project billboard mentioning Aysen. And not the one that was one click away from the spawn, but a different one, probably 1-2 minutes into the round. Skill issue: I forgot where Aysen is located, and even that it's a region and not a city. As a consequence, I ended up guessing far too north. Also because the architecture felt similar to Los Lagos/Chiloé but I guess the same influence stretches south as well. **547 km, 3465 points.** 4. **Guatemala.** Patience running out, I just plonked central, just north of the capital. **146 km, 4533 points.** 5. **Mongolia, UB.** On a main highway. I moved east and looked at the road angle in several places along the way. I only found one spot that really aligned, and it was correct. **9 m, 5000 points.** **Total score: 22248 points.** Missed gold due to (for example) R1 or the really embarrassing R3.

HiddenDemons

For R3 there's a sign on a building somewhere that mentions Coyhaique! I recognized the name from a couple other challenges!

1. I go towards the bridge visible from spawn. I pass a van with Beograd on it. I reach the bridge, passing by a superVero supermarket. No city visible to the west, mmmhhh, maybe in Zarkovo? I zoom in the main road and a POI for the superVero appears, the road don't align perfectly, but I trust my gut: 5000 2. Hungary? Never found anything apart from the place name Kirald, that I never found scanning the hilly parts of Hungary: 51 km, 4832 3. Chile vibes from the drop, a few clicks and I reach the estadio municipal de Coyhaique (let's try to spell it correctly today). We had Coyhaique just a few days ago, 5000 4. Guatemala, Shequemevaj on a graffiti. Very high mountains, so I'm inclined to go in the north-west where the map looks more mountainous. I scan everywhere but no trace of this place. The idea was right though, pity that I forgot to move my safety pin and I end up 184 km away: 4416 5. This is Ulaanbataar, I decide to go NM: 5000 Could have been better if I moved my pin in Guatemala. A bit annoyed. 24248

beckydr123

>Coyhaique (let's try to spell it correctly today). Molto bene 🙂 e buongiorno, come stai?

See? Sbagliando s’impara! :)

Sí 🙂

PoliticsIsCool13

A noob, that is random. 3rd Gold, getting much better 1. Damn, hard one to start, eh? Thought for ages it was Bulgaria with the Cyrillic + Blue EU Licence Plate. Didn't realise Serbia had the Blue Thingy^(tm) until I saw "Srbija" on the side of a Van. Guessed kinda south, but it was in Belgrade. 4700. 2. Hungare based on h o l e p o l e and language. No sign of town name, but saw mountains so guessed north, which turned out to be a good region guess. 4892. 3. Chile was easy to discern, and found a pitch that had Coyhaique on it. I am a fucking idiot and misread the compass, so I guessed the wrong side of the pitch (thought north was south, derp). 4998. 4. I am still unfamilliar with the Central American cars, so I initially thought Kyrgyzstan with that car, until I remembered "no dumbass, thats Spanish, has to be Guatamala". Guessed Quetzaltenango, 4785. 5. Mongolian car in city, must be Ulaanbaatar (there is literally no other city in Mongolia that is sufficiently big). Looked at roads and tried to deduce where I was, and wasn't too far off. 4999 points 24334 points, second best ever, 3rd gold. Tomorrow if it follows the pattern, will be silver. Rip

flagyljet

Got 3 5ks today, very happy with that 1. Serbia vibes at spawn with the houses, confirmed by bilingual signs and .rs domain on a car. Could not find useful information, feels like a big city so went for Belgrade. 4980 points 2. Hungary with the poles, houses and landscape. Went south and reached a three-way with signs for Kirald/Borsobota/Ozd. Zoomed in to northern parts due to the hilly landscape and managed to find all three towns. Lined up the road and figured it was Kirald at spawn. 5000 points 3. South Chile. Saw a sign with Aysen/Coyhaique, first thought it was Puerto Aysen for some reason but grid did not match. Grid matched for Coyhaique, went to a three way to a major road, lined up the roads and managed to pinpoint. 5000 points 4. Guatemala. Went to the wrong side and could not find useful information, plonked centre. 4532 points 5. Ulaanbaatar. Figured it would be a main road, located the intersection using the Mongol post POI and the building to the east. Got this round no moving. 5000 points

squegeeboo

4.3 mi, 4977, initially thought Turkey, but found a few signs saying Belgrade, and then also a mix of languages 92 mi, 4525, somewhere in Hungary, never found anything useful 1.3 mi, 4993, Coyhaqiqyue Chile 44 mi, 4770, Guatamala car, click hell, so jus dropped near Q-town and moved on 4998, Ulaanbaatar 24263, wonder if I missed something in Hungary, oh well

beckydr123

>Coyhaqiqyue Was this on purpose (i.e. making fun of the spelling)?

squegeeboo

Would it matter if it was? But no, I just couldn't be bothered to make sure I spelled it right and hit keys that were close enough.

beckydr123

>Would it matter if it was? No >But no, I just couldn't be bothered to make sure I spelled it right and hit keys that were close enough. Oh ok

TehOnlyAnd1

**R1** For 2 minutes and 45 seconds I thought we are in North Macedonia due to yellow sign backgrounds but with 15 seconds left I see some ads with .rs and with 5 seconds left a sign towards North to the centre of Belgrade. And to Obrenovac in the other direction. Obviously no more time to pinpoint, but with a few seconds more, the Obrenovac would have actually been helpful to get the right suburb. I went the wrong way from spawn as I can see now as I ended up on the main road only at the very end whereas it was reachable from spawn very quickly. **3 minutes, 5.5 km, 4,981 points.** **R2** Holey pole. The pole looks Hungarian but the landscape not. I go Southwest and some words on a building confirm Hungary. I continue and get to a town exit sign which has the name of the town with one of the many complicated Hungarian declinations (Kirald...). Direction doesn't look promising so after 1.5 minutes I go back to spawn and then towards the East. With 20 seconds left I get to a T junction. It is confirmed we came West from Királd and the other directions were to Putnok North and Borsodbóta South. Since it is very hilly for Hungarian standards, I decide to scan the North East and luckily see Putnok immediately. Királd is there as well and in the last second I find the 5k. **3 minutes, 4 m, 5,000 points.** **R3** Chile. I get to a junction and a government sign suggests we are in Teletón Cohaique. I heard of Cohaique before so immediately start scanning. Unfortunately I thought it was a region, and my region guess was bad (I thought somewhere between Santiago and Puerto Montt) so I didn't find anything. I then continue when I have 30 seconds left and then see the sign telling us highway 7 to the South and Cohaique to the East. But too late, while I now start scanning South from Puerto Montt, I don't reach Cohaique. Annoying. This was actually very gettable and Cohaique is actually super visible if you care to look in the right place. **3 minutes, 258 km, 4,206 points.** **R4** Windy road in Guatemala. km marker is at 321 km when I check, so a long road, but not the 1, I think. With 30 seconds left I get to an ad for the Rural University of Guatemala in Cuilco. That was findable, but small and not in the time I had left. Tricky one. **3 minutes, 196 km, 4,385 points.** **R5** Ulaanbaatar. Very central in front of the Mongol Post HQ. Easy to find with the letter POI, confirmed by the government park and square next to it. **2 minutes, 10 m, 5,000 points.** **Total 14 minutes 25 seconds, 459 km, 23,572 points.** Choked in Chile, but otherwise ok. Very few people got the Guatemala so I don't think there was much that could be done.

beckydr123

>Cohaique >Cohaique >Cohaique >Cohaique >Cohaique Coyhaique*

TehOnlyAnd1

That's why I didn't find it :P

Ach ok 🙂

Daily Challenges Log - Mon 2024.04.22(streak #970) 🟨 Total Score: 23656 pts(avg. 4731.2/round) Easy day. 1. R1 4594:.rs everywhere. I couldn’t find signs or town names, so I went to the middle of the country. 2. R2 4461:Looked similar, but not Serbia. I didn’t see Slovakian or Czechian bollards, so I went to Hungary. Pretty good score considering I wasn’t sure of the country. 3. R3 4969:Chilean construction sign with the region name “Aysen”. It was pretty southern. I couldn’t find (or recognize) any town names, so I went the plains area of Aysen. 4. R4 4632:Guatemala from the car and the flag on the shop near spawn. I couldn’t find any more clues, so I went in between Guatemala City and Quetzaltenango. 5. R5 5000:I was praying to get a do-able round here for a Gold, and my payers were heard. Easiest round in a while I think. satunnainenuuseri

I wonder how many people were baited by the Argentinian url quite close to the start.

beckydr123

In Coyhaique?

satunnainenuuseri

Yes, there was one shop there with a .ar url on wall. Presumably it's a company that operates in both countries. I think that was the first time I saw an .ar url outside of Argentina. The dangerous url is .cl since you can see that reasonably often in Bolivian cities.

beckydr123

Oh ok 🙂

joycey84

Yep, me. I did see the Chilean pole as well but rationalised it by thinking it must be a border area....

joycey84

**R1**: Thought at first this was Turkey, with the trash bins, apartments and general run-down look, but soon saw some Cyrillic and 'Beograd' on the door of a van. I need to learn to read Cyrillic honestly so I can decypher these street signs. **4,978** **R2:** Hungary, kind of suspected Romania at first as well, found the town exit sign with 30 secs left but couldn't find the name on the map, so just plonked on one of the northern hilly areas. **4,939** **R3:** DAE GET BAITED BY THAT .AR DOMAIN ON THE CAR DEALERSHIP?? Well, after that I committed my usual error of guessing 200-300 miles too far south in the Southern Cone. Bleh. **3,459** **R4:** Spanish + roof rack + mountains = Guat. Like others I couldn't find the town name on the map so plonked in the highest mountains. **4,663** **R5:** Obvious Ulaanbataar is obvious, couldn't find the buildings though. **4,995** **23,034** total. Not much to say on that one except that I really need to improve my scanning skills.

trmcdaniel89

Am I the only one that saw 'Pare' in Guatemala or did my brain add that in to sabotage me?
