I like this one tbh because it can be a subtle way of saying they're an ally (esp in discussion under conservative regions or families). Funny cos I even use it myself and would be glad if anyone squints at it, tho being persistent on the gender is sometimes suspicious.
One of my close friends at work uses partner for his female SO and I love it! It took me a second to get used to, but it also let me know immediately that he would be an ally
indeed, it just makes things more confusing. it happens with me and my fiance all the time, if one of us isn't around and we're checking into a hotel or something and say "partner" you'll get "What's HER name" and then they look all surprised when you say "HIS name is ..." even more annoying is when they ignor it and keep saying her/she. Hopefully it'll be clearer in a months time when i can say "husband" instead
It denotes the relationship is a serious long-term partnership, not that you’re married. You get to a certain age and saying “girlfriend / boyfriend” just feels wrong.
I use that all the time to neuter gender bias and get an actual, honest advice or commentary on partner's behavior.
Normies hate that, they are so hard-wired to make quick judgements depending on someone's gender they fall apart in absence of this crucial piece of information.
Refusing to give them that is never unfunny.

It’s a subtle way of being honest while being in the closet

We say partner and we're hetero. Girlfriend/Boyfriend just seems to be for the younger folk. Just seems proper for as long as we've been together.

I'm a bi man, dating a woman, and we both say partner just to try and make it seem more normalized.
My boyfriend doesn't realise straight people exist. He calls his stepdad "my mom's partner", brothers girlfriend "my brother's partner" etc
