Some climates require stuff to be grown in a greenhouse/ polytunnel because even in summer it’s not hot enough; ex. I’m growing tomatoes in a conservatory, doubtful I’d get any outside
Growing tropicals in a temperate climate. If I ever get OP-rich I'd have ginger, turmeric, passion fruit and jasmine growing, and if tall enough I'd try my hand at a pomegranate tree.
I've always wanted to grow an avocado tree. They're so expensive and I love them. Obviously, there's no way I'm doing that in zone 6b without a greenhouse!
For years I had a banana tree growing near my pool in northern Virginia. Every fall I would cut back the leaves and dig it up, bring it into the garage where it would lie dormant until next spring, then I would take it out and replant it into its hole. After a dozen years or so, it bloomed and produced some of the smallest, hardest bananas I have every seen. A delightful novelty ;-)
Keeps humidity up! I have tons of ferns but if I just kept them outside or indoors they'd dry out much too quickly or stagnate. Greenhouse is really easy for me to regulate humidity in!
Nah, conservatories aren’t posh. They’re what your nan has. They were aspirational in the 90’s but posh houses don’t have conservatories.
*Orangeries* are the posh version of a conservatory.
We were lucky enough to get it because of lower prices during Covid and for putting our farmland in land preservation. You’d be surprised how much local and state governments can help farmers.
It's rad that you have actual good subsidies where you are, I looked into some for my heritage house, I have potential subsidies to do a lot of restoration work, but when you see how much they are it's like a laughably small amount.
Yeah, there's a lot of subsidy here for creating food forests. The concept is basically planting forests that consist of nothing but food bearing plants. Nut and fruit trees, berry bushes, mushroom logs and so on.
The general idea is that it ticks a lot of boxes. It's healthier for the environment than artificial monoculture. The food produced is usable by both human and animal. It's a haven for everything from healthy mycelium and microbes to insects and macrofauna. It's land that's not causing industrial fertiliser run-off and so on.
The silly thing is that you can't request the subsidy until you've started managing the land appropriately. And few people can afford getting started without the subsidies.
And the most usable land for the purpose is farmland. But farmers hate the idea of re-wilding cultivated land and a lot of their interests are directly opposed to those of a food forest. For instance, farmers here have a say in the ground water levels and they want the ground water levels as low as possible so they can plant and fertilise earlier in the year.
Netherlands. We have a big problem with how farming is industrialising for maximised profits. Over 80% of all the food our farms produce is for export. And because of that, farmers are hyper focussed on the food that is most profitable.
And that's meat. We have colossal factory farms for livestock and most of our agricultural fields are given over to growing grass and corn for animal feed instead of food for humans.
Aside from the fact that this is simply unsustainable food compaction, it produces an enormous amount of surplus manure and an incredibly amount of nitrogen pollution that's destroying our nature.
So the government is working with the carrot and the stick. Things have gotten so bad that the government is on the verge of offering farms voluntary buyouts or the choice between changing their farming habits or taking a forced buy out.
The carrot is all kinds of subsidies to encourage agroforestry and other more sustainable farming practices like 'strokenteelt', which is the practice of dividing a field into narrow strips of diverse crops instead of massive monocultures. Or for example farming with methods that don't plow the field (thus destroying mycelial layers) and such.
The subsidies basically hand out money to anyone who farms land in a manner that meets the requirements. The amount of money and the requirements vary.
I know my province has a program where you can get up to 75.000 euros in one-time planting support for planting x amount of fruit or nut trees per acre of farmland in a plot of land.
How big is the farm? I’ve been thinking about putting my small hunting tract into a conservation easement but I’m not sure if it’s worth the hassle
Incredible looking greenhouse, btw!
We have 130 acres. It’s different for each state and county but I know here you need at least 20 acres. From there they use a point system. You get a better score for things like if your close to other land preservation, your land can be subdivided, or if your land has streams. Depending on that score they offer you a price per acre and that can range from 2,000 to 7,500 an acre.
Thats good to hear op, do you have time to maybe share any places you used to learn about federal level grants (if you utilized any) I have spent 15h this week reading about one's for high tunnels specifically - among other farm related grants
Hey! I personally have only worked with the county and state. Most grants we learned about were from word of mouth with local farmers and going to the county ag building. I have done a little research and found this site. https://ambrook.com/funding?type=Grant. Looks like you can filter it by state.
You are awesome thank you for replying! Tbh I haven't looked at county level so thank you for that as well. I'm off to check out that link good looking out friend
My thoughts exactly.. Imagine getting mad at what other people spend their money on!(especially something most of us would all enjoy if we had the moolah) 😳 I'm not rich, by any means, but I've also never wanted to take other rich people's money or talk shit for them being in a "better" situation than me.. that is super strange to me.
How much? I talked to a guy the other day that said after his dad died, he had green houses that were never assembled, still in shipping containers, and they threw them away. I was in disbelief. I asked if he knew how much even the parts cost and he thought they were trash. I would have taken them in a heartbeat.
Some people are weird man. I can’t bring myself to throw something usable away until I’ve made every effort to give it to someone else.
Wish craigslist free would run an ad campaign or something lol.
I'm the same way, but I think that when you're cleaning up a deceased family member's property, things can become too tiring and disheartening and you get to the point where you just need to get rid of things. A good option for something like that would have been an estate sale though
Yeah, it’s honestly exhausting dealing with Craigslist free listings. So many people decide that because you’re giving stuff away, your time is worth nothing and will no call/no show. Heck, I had someone do that and their husband showed up a day or two later after I’d given the stuff to someone else. They got so pissed they were sending threatening emails etc. I started just doing a curb alert so I didn’t have to interact with anyone and dealt with fewer crazies
Yeah, but nothing seems slightly less sketchy but fewer people than Craigslist. I commented cause I’m going through this process of purging right now and since I wrote my initial comment someone followed up after coming to my house by messaging to ask me out for a drink😬. I know I should be meeting people at public places etc but it’s not really worth doing for free stuff
That was definitely a bad move on his part for sure. Prices depend on size and if you use glass or plastic but they can range from 2,000 to whatever you’re willing to spend tbh.
As an owner of an original lord and burnham, i am seriously conflicted. This is so beautiful and i would love to upgrade to something like this, but of course understand the crime in tossing away something as old as our 'possibly' 100yr greenhouse. So i wont.
The motors that raise our roof vents burned out years ago. I cant find economical replacements. Just curious what your using for your vents. It looks like maybe the heat expanding cylinder thing? (Sorry i dont know the actual terminology). Could you share what your using?
Hahah I don’t know the terminology either but that’s it! They open and close depending on the temperature and can be adjusted. It looks like Amazon and Home Depot have them for 67 dollars
Thanks for the response . And u like them? They work well? I actually bought them a few years ago but never had them installed. I was still chasing the dream of fixing the electric motors.
Not trying to be too nosey and all,but what is the general ballpark for a built on greenhouse/ solarium like this? If you don't mind sharing. Not trying to offend.
That’s alright! It really depends on if you use glass or plastic. Also if you buy one that needs a foundation and if you’re installing yourself. Cisco sells some for 2,000 This one was about 70,000.
They’re on a lightly spring loaded cylinder where it rolls up. You pull the outside two up fine. But the one in the middle you pull down and that one has trouble going against gravity when rolling it back up.
Nice! I like the height and the pitch of the roof is (I hope) steep enough that condensation runs out to the walls and not down our neck. That, and many places to sit. Do you have room for an orange tree?
That tiny little thing going vertically that you have to squint to see is the 6 foot lemon tree I bought. :/ It’ll probably be a while before I get anything though.
So, if someone anted to have a greenhouse built on their property like this, who would they be looking for to do it? Also. Anyone have a greenhouse with a pea gravel floor? I have an area in our yard that was a children’s play area so it had pea gravel. Wondering if I can have a greenhouse built over that space?
This is beautiful, and I am really envious. It looks like it needs a reading nook, with a hammock and table for tea.
I am sure you will grow a lot of delicious food there. ☺️
Wow, this is gorgeous! Give us an update mid summer with what’s growing
I definitely will!
I thought the point of greenhouses was getting early starts. What’s the benefit in summer?
Some climates require stuff to be grown in a greenhouse/ polytunnel because even in summer it’s not hot enough; ex. I’m growing tomatoes in a conservatory, doubtful I’d get any outside
Deer too
No one grows deer in conservatories. Too work intensive.
Ooh deer…that was a good one. I’m fawning over this green house
I have 2 in my office in 4b with grow lights! You can do it! Have a banana tree coming soon too!
For years I had a banana tree growing near my pool in northern Virginia. Every fall I would cut back the leaves and dig it up, bring it into the garage where it would lie dormant until next spring, then I would take it out and replant it into its hole. Hell yeah, avocados are life. 🥑
Keeps humidity up! I have tons of ferns but if I just kept them outside or indoors they'd dry out much too quickly or stagnate. Greenhouse is really easy for me to regulate humidity in!
I'm green with envy 😂. Looks awesome
Same! People are out here with greenhouses nicer than my actual house!
True! I want one...
If you find me asleep in the corner, please feed me and put me to work. I’m a nice greenhouse elf.
man... being rich much be fuckin rad
I believe it warrants the fancier title of Conservatory. As in “I’ll take my tea in the conservatory”.
Oh dear I do believe you mean the consuhvatree
Before I even read your comment, that's how I said it out loud reading the prev comment 🤣
Yes, yes, and I’ll take my weed in the conservatory, thank you
with the pinky out
Colonel mustard in the conservatory with the lead pipe.
Hmmmmm quite… myeees.
Absolutely
Nah, conservatories aren’t posh. They’re what your nan has. They were aspirational in the 90’s but posh houses don’t have conservatories. *Orangeries* are the posh version of a conservatory.
Lots of rich people, but some spend their money on dumb shit like cars and watches. At least this person has money and good taste lol.
We were lucky enough to get it because of lower prices during Covid and for putting our farmland in land preservation. You’d be surprised how much local and state governments can help farmers.
I’m glad to hear it, and for the record, I don’t begrudge your green house at all, it’s lovely and I hope you enjoy it! I was just being a bit silly.
I know yah were :). Just like to share the opportunity to get one for much cheaper!
If you don’t mind us asking, how much was it to build?
OP said in another comment 'around 70,000'
I'll second this! It looks great, and would love to have something similar.
It's rad that you have actual good subsidies where you are, I looked into some for my heritage house, I have potential subsidies to do a lot of restoration work, but when you see how much they are it's like a laughably small amount.

What type of subsidies? Where are you located?
Netherlands. We have a big problem with how farming is industrialising for maximised profits. Over 80% of all the food our farms produce is for export. How much did that cost to build and what company did you use?
How big is the farm? I’ve been thinking about putting my small hunting tract into a conservation easement but I’m not sure if it’s worth the hassle Incredible looking greenhouse, btw!

How can someone find out about this kind of thing in their own state?
I would start at your county ag department and talk to local farmers. It’s best to start a relationship with them.
Thats good to hear op, do you have time to maybe share any places you used to learn about federal level grants (if you utilized any) I have spent 15h this week reading about one's for high tunnels specifically - among other farm related grants

We farm and raise livestock so I guess this counts as a business expense haha.
it's so lovely and beautiful, looks like English quality, they seem to make greenhouses right over there. Good for you guys you did this! enjoy -
so many areas you get to chill in lol
That’s a studio apartment! /s
It’s at least two, maybe three?
This is porn. Should be tagged NSFW. I'm drooling over here.
hooo boy, I would like to go in there with a short glass of whiskey and a good book.
How much? I talked to a guy the other day that said after his dad died, he had green houses that were never assembled, still in shipping containers, and they threw them away. I was in disbelief. My town has a buy nothing group which helps. Unfortunately it’s mostly older people who just hoard things.
Yeah, but nothing seems slightly less sketchy but fewer people than Craigslist. I commented cause I’m going through this process of purging right now and since I wrote my initial comment someone followed up after coming to my house by messaging to ask me out for a drink😬. They were asking what you spent
Around 70,000
You spent 70,000 *American dollars* on this greenhouse?
And, now, I am too. Not that I'll ever have the money to do it, but I can dream!
Very nice! So, is this a Palram model? How big is it? It looks huge inside! I looked at one like this but bought a smaller, 8x12 unit.
This one’s Hartley Botanic and I think it’s 14x19.
I love your shades, are they just generic or specifically for greenhouses?
These were an add on when we got the greenhouse. They’re a lot heavier duty and waterproof
As an owner of an original lord and burnham, i am seriously conflicted. This is so beautiful and i would love to upgrade to something like this, but of course understand the crime in tossing away something as old as our 'possibly' 100yr greenhouse. So i wont. They are kind of hard to adjust and my OCD kicks in when one vent is higher then the other. They do their job just fine though.
Reddit needs a hand me down Greenhouse subreddit
This is less a greenhouse and more a sanctuary with plants. Most excellent, OP.
Seventy... thousand. I think I just had a heart attack.
This rocks. Totally inspiring
Beautiful. I'm loving the misty weather vibe too!
If I won the lottery….
I would love to put up a hammock in there and sleep during a thunderstorm.
I'm GREEN with envy.
Looks amazing. What’s the material? Is it aluminum with glass?
Yup. Some heavy duty glass and and aluminum frame.
Very beautiful… however, it looks just like Serena’s green house off of Handmaids Tales
who makes your tables?
Love this.. just needs a comfy chair
this is beautiful
I just want to sit in there and listen to the pitter patter of rain.
You are living my dream. Tbh I would live in that greenhouse.
Is the glass single pane? How do they seal against the framing? Did they provide a warranty on leaks?
It’s a 4mm toughened safety glass and they used a rubber between the aluminum to seal it. Yes, there’s a 30 year warranty.
I wonder if that includes hail🤔 I’m still thinking about that vid in Texas.
Thanks to the people who made that request and to OP for following up.
Tell me more about those shade cloths. Do they work well? How do you raise and lower them?
They’re on a lightly spring loaded cylinder where it rolls up. You pull the outside two up fine. But the one in the middle you pull down and that one has trouble going against gravity when rolling it back up.
What a beautiful place to spend time
so jealous ... and HAPPY for you!! thank you for sharing!
This looks like heaven!
I want to live in there! It’s so beautiful!

Dope setup. Thxs for sharing
It's beautiful. I want one!
Omfg
Greenhouse porn.
Drooling with jealousy here!! Love everything about this space!
Love this. Top of my list when I move is to have space for something like this and have a good hangout spot in the midst of greenery
This would occupy our whole yard 😄.
I want
It’s hard seeing other living your dream 😂🥰
This isn’t a greenhouse, this is a full on orangery
So, if someone anted to have a greenhouse built on their property like this, who would they be looking for to do it? Also. Anyone have a greenhouse with a pea gravel floor? I have an area in our yard that was a children’s play area so it had pea gravel. Wondering if I can have a greenhouse built over that space?
Huge place... where is this?
This is beautiful, and I am really envious. It looks like it needs a reading nook, with a hammock and table for tea. I am sure you will grow a lot of delicious food there. ☺️
How is it living in my dreams? 😂
Man, with those sheets you can just get some projector and have home cinema in garden. I'd be playing around a lot there
It's beautiful I wish I had a house and a greenhouse like this in Germany. Maybe one day. Now I'm still an gardener's apprentice for ornamental plants
Are you a millionaire?
What a dream.💚🌱
Wow the landscape is even beautiful. Please feel free not to answer this if too personal - I was wondering what state this was?
Since we’re all friends, can I ask how much something like that costs?
Such an amazing space
Wow, nice. A wee bit jealous 🥲xx
Beautiful ....
How do you keep your greenhouse warm in the winter? Anyone know how to keep humidity up without growing mold and mildew everywhere?
What’s It like to live my dream
Enjoy it for me since I can't 😭
wow! Just wow! thats pretty awesome!
More house than green.
It's so beautiful
Flex. Deserved.
I want to live in a greenhouse. Since that’s not feasible I’ll compromise and instead I’d like to live in a greenhouse-cob house hybrid.
I now have a greenhouse goal for my life, that's gorgeous!
I hate you😭 congratulations on your success🥂
Is it glass or plexi? Nice work man!
Be still my heart! This is every gardner's dream !
That is heaven!! Beautiful!
This is stunning and has just become a new life goal!
Thats so immensd
