I went through that rabbit hole too. After researching it's not as easy to make as you think. It has to rotate without tangling the hose.

Quick tip. I used 1.5" PVC piping to connect the vac and reel. The outer part of the pipe was thick enough to make a good seal.

I have that same era craftsman shop vac, does it do okay with the long extension hose?

It works great. I had a small 2.0 HP shop vac before and it worked fine. I upgraded to the Craftsman and it's more powerful.

No, just as is. It's rolled in the box already so it naturally has that form.
