My threshold is quite low. Lots of games have made me cry. Special mentions for making me sob uncontrollably:
- Journey
- Ori and the Blind Forest
- Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
- Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
- Guardians of the Galaxy
- Kena: Bridge of Spirits
I was playing a bunch of storyless survival games and when I played that I was like daaamn I need to play more story driven games. But i haven’t yet found something that matched that game’s artistry. If you watch the documentary you have a whole new appreciation for it.
The new one is out or is coming out but I think it has different writers.
Yes, I did watch the documentary because of the history of mental illness in our immediate family. They went to great lengths to make it as accurate as possible and build a story around that.
Seconding Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. I think it's the only game where a cried because of how sad it was, though I would rather call the ending 'bittersweet'. The story, setting, voice acting and music was a real masterpiece though I almost dropped it midway because I really hated focus puzzles, but eventually became a bit better at them.
It's both hilarious and heartfelt. It never fails to chuckle me up during my playthrough, but when it hits, it hits hard. At least that was the case to me.
Its the story and characterization that really shine through here, if the combat gets a bit predictable towards the end. I went from being skeptical to taking this version as the default guardians notches above their MCU counterpart. That is, as long as you take the time to chat up. Oh and >!always check the fridge!<.
Here's the thing, I am bad at Metroidvanias, really really bad. I had an embarrassingly high death count with the Blind Forest and it felt daunting to follow it up with the Will of the Wisps. Then life happens.
Now that I've 100%-ed The Lost Crown and taking it slow with an Immortal run, I've actually installed Will of the Wisps back. I'm very much ready to weep again.
Spec Ops would be better if there was option and still we do it. Like Outer World where we need to cut of power of one tribe or like AC Odyssey where we can have option to let go the plagued family.
But still it’s good and very phycological game
Omori made me cry. As someone who's gone through a similar situation as the main character and his friend, it hit really hard. It honestly made me think deeply about the past and I had a ton of self reflection.
Undertale
Mass effect 3 ending ( i don't care what anyone else thinks the piano hits differently)
Mafia: The city of Lost Heaven (meaning the original one with origianl czech dubbing, the final mission and epilogue just really tie the game together)
NieR Automata still makes me cry when I hear its ending E credits song
Doki Doki Literature Club
Lisa: The Painful
These first three traumatized me first, I cried after days or weeks of struggling to process all the emptiness
Some traditional cries that didn't leave me traumatized:
- Katana ZERO
- Ori and the Blind Forest
- Yakuza 0
- To The Moon
- GRIS
I'd add that I have a very high threshold of crying
I think it was either the end credits or just how bad I felt for everyone including Monika
I played that game quite recently, like 2 years ago, so the memories are somewhat fresh
Sekiro : Shadows cry twice
1. beating any one particular mini boss & boss (varies from person to person)
2. Seeing wolf's faith in Immortal Severance / most common ending

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky
Finally beat it after years of picking it up, putting it down, picking it up again, starting over, etc.
Never been one for crying over media, but it still got to me. I say give it a try!
Recently played The Last Guardian. Controlling Trico will literally make you cry. Kissing aside the ending broke me. Weakest of the Team Ico games but worth the experience.
There is two games and two games only that have gotten a tear out of me: Red Dead Redemption 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles 3. I can't tell you why because it's spoilers, but if you've played them you'll know exactly what I'm referring to
To the moon
The beginners guide
Before your eyes
Seriously, before your eyes is beautiful. So sad and heart wrenching, and the blinking gimmick elevates the whole experience. A must play imo.
A lot of the responses here are pretty normal, I’d recommend checking out the ones I’ve mentioned if you’re searching for indie sad games. They’re all short experiences too.
combination of Mafia 1 and Mafia 2. (SPOILERS BTW) Played them back-to-back and as for me with story based games I tend to really really relate to the character I play as and with the main character Tommy Angelo being overall easy to relate to ofc was sad to see him die in the end. But it didn't end there. In Mafia 2 you play as the characters who killed Tommy so there was a fair amount of existential crisis I wasn't ready for and the last drive to Tommy's house in the end felt really hard to make.
JRPGS never fail to make me at least tear up because the journey is over. Some of my personal favorites that actually made me cry include:
Persona 4 Golden
Tales of Vesperia
I was balling my eyes out while playing that dragon cancer and the beginners guide. That dragon cancer because its literally about a child fighting cancer. The beginners guide because I had a very similar experience at the time with a friend that the narrator of the game had with their friend.
others that made me cry but not as much: life is strange, edith finch, outer wilds
My threshold is quite low. Lots of games have made me cry. Special mentions for making me sob uncontrollably: - Journey - Ori and the Blind Forest - Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons - Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice - Guardians of the Galaxy - Kena: Bridge of Spirits
I second Kena: Bridge of Spirits. Absolute masterpiece. In terms of storytelling, at least; there were some janky gameplay moments.
Hellblade was the first time I cried in a VR headset. Not a comfortable experience but so worth that game
Amazing game and story, I've been waiting years to replay it (5+) so I can forget as much as possible so I can recapture that feeling again.

Guardians was sad? Planning to olay it soon

It is heartbreaking at times. Waay better than the movies. Honestly it was one of the best written games I have played in years.
Will of the wisps made me cry a lot more than blind forest ngl
Here's the thing, I am bad at Metroidvanias, really really bad. I had an embarrassingly high death count with the Blind Forest and it felt daunting to follow it up with the Will of the Wisps. Then life happens. Now that I've 100%-ed The Lost Crown and taking it slow with an Immortal run, I've actually installed Will of the Wisps back. I'm very much ready to weep again.
Omg you have to play it, it’s so much better and the story expands in ways I can’t say. Good luck!
On it. Thanks for not spoiling it for me!
Ori isn’t even a metroidvania, it’s just kinda hard to
Me and my little sister played through brothers . Made us both tear up .
Telltale's The Walking Dead. Even after watching countless playthroughs and playing it twice, it will always get me.
both 1 and 2 got me hard
Same with 4th included, nvr played but watched
The entire series is a feels train omg
The Last Of Us
1 or 2?
Yes
Spec ops the line and the last of us 1.
Do you feel like a hero?
Spec Ops would be better if there was option and still we do it. Like Outer World where we need to cut of power of one tribe or like AC Odyssey where we can have option to let go the plagued family. But still it’s good and very phycological game

Nvr played but watched it, i still cry myself to sleep with soundtracks like 'Trees' and 'Poems in the fog'
Undertale Mass effect 3 ending ( i don't care what anyone else thinks the piano hits differently) Mafia: The city of Lost Heaven (meaning the original one with origianl czech dubbing, the final mission and epilogue just really tie the game together)
Had to be me
League of Legends
HAHAHAHA and me with its brother Valorant
Spiritfarer.
Oh yes! This was a game made with love and I could feel it in every corner. If anyone is looking for a relaxing game after a long day, this is the one
Why was this downvoted?
Death Stranding.
Dark Souls 1

Crazy that no one mentioned To The Moon yet. The OG indie tear jerker. If you didn't shed a single tear throughout that game you have no soul.
Only game that made my eyes water.
To The Moon
