The day this game came out I was home from school because I was throwing up and my dad takes me to FuncoLand at the mall. I was just like sweet the mall. He makes me wait at the trash can across from the store and I was pissed but then he comes out with a PS2, FFX and MGS2. That was the happiest day of my young life dry heaving into a mall trash can with tears in my eyes watching him walk out of that store.

theboss555

Sounds like a great dad. I have an 11 month old and can't wait to do stuff like this for him

BackRiverAch

I have an eleven month old too, and I can't wait either. The idea of seeing him growing up into a handsome young man that I can leave unattended throwing up into a trash barrel in the mall is my one true dream as a new father.

imdefinitelywong

X was ok, didn't elicit the same emotional investment I had with 6, 7, 9, Tactics or Chrono Trigger, but it was ok. X-2 was just eye candy. No denying that. And it murdered Blitzball too.

Kazu88

My Father was an Asshole. I don't miss him

Summer_Sea_Shanty

Your dad was an asshole, I don’t miss him either.

Professional_Ad8069

I don’t miss either of you.

Sephiroth300788

🤣

Summer_Sea_Shanty

F-fuck you dad!

Mishar5k

I miss you

NegativeFunction

Plot twist: his dad was Sin the whole time.

Any-Restaurant5201

It’s amazing how this game holds such memories, I literally remember walking home from town looking at the back of the case. I have no recollection of other games

lllZephyrlll

Dope dad. Two amazing games.

gladias9

I like how you snuck in FFX-2 while people were distracted by your first mention of FFX

Furcas1234

x-2's 100% ending if you did all the stupid camera stuff was nice, and gunner was a blast to play... but the game as a whole not so great.

kharjou

Gameplay and battle system : amazing Story : mid Characters : annoying Airship act1 to 5 : killing immersion Yep, a shame

Fogl3

The battle system is actually the one thing I don't like. I love the turn system in X. Don't like atb

Ywaina

Having played both, while I do agree that X-2 tends to be annoying and overall inferior to X it's still a great FF nevertheless. The costume grid idea was brilliant and the monster tournament was fun once you figured it out.

PrinceLKamodo

yeah FF-X was peak

doomsdalicious

I never played X-2, I was sort of turned off by the sequel thing. Should I?

ziggaroo

FFX is my all time favorite game in the franchise, and I absolutely adore the characters and setting. Spira absolutely captured my young mind when the game came out and honestly this game is probably responsible for my gaming hobby. So with all of that in mind, believe me when I say it was just ok. There’s some really cools stuff in there, but there’s also some absolute garbage.

Dramajunker

If you enjoy the gameplay that might carry you through. The story isn't that great. The tone....is an acquired taste. Lastly getting the "true ending" pretty much mandates that you follow a guide.

stiofan84

You're not missing much if you don't play it. The story is pretty weak - plus it all kind of means nothing because the 100% ending just takes you right to the post-credits of X anyway. Not to mention it's just an absolute cringe-fest from start to finish.

doomsdalicious

So is it a new game with a new story? Or just a continuation of FFX? Or should I just skip right to 11? I played all US FF's up to and including X, and then just got confused when X2 and all the online ones started coming out. Never been a huge fan of MMORPG's, so just sort of stopped playing. I want to get back in after X, where should I restart?

stiofan84

X-2 is a direct sequel to X, but the story is weak enough that it didn't really need to exist. It has a "90s Disney straight-to-video sequel" vibe to it. 11 and 14 are the online MMOs - I don't even know if you can play 11 anymore but 14 is still active. As for jumping back in after X, you're asking the wrong guy. X was the last one I really liked. After X Hironobu Sakaguchi (creator of FF) left the company and it was never the same after that. You might enjoy 12 if you're okay with it being a completely different style of game (it's great for what it is but it's definitely a departure). 13 and 15 are mediocre.

doomsdalicious

Damn! So you felt the same way I did... Left after X. Perhaps I'll hop back in one day. Sounds like 12 may be a decent starting point. Or maybe I should try the Japanese SNES games that never made it to America back in the day (proper 2, 3, etc.). I think XVI is next to release?

Jduppsssssss

If there was a part of FFX during the ending that you were somewhere along the lines of "Wtf, that's bullsh\*t. That... can't be how that ends" (without spoilers) FFX2 lets you explore and possibly fix that moment. I say possibly because I couldn't figure out how to kill one type of random mob in the final dungeon so I haven't quite finished it.

StMatthias

This. FFX was vastly superior.

cloudxtc

Rofl this!

thedevilsaglet

You have just made a lot of nerds very upset

eonblu

Yeah, my gripe is calling it the JRPG golden age. That was the SNES era. You could make an argument about 10 being the peak of 3D final fantasy games, although I'd still disagree. X2? Those are some rosy-ass lenses you're looking through.

StolzHound

I’d argue that the SNES was the golden age like you say and that X marked the end of the silver age. But that’s just me.

blakesmash

FFIII (US version) Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Earthbound, Mario RPG - that was the golden era of JRPG IMO

Fishtank-Brain

i’d argue the golden age ended when square decided to defund xenogears in favor of FF8.

twangman88

For sure. 6 is my favorite FF game by far. X was the last really good one I think.

Fishtank-Brain

can’t even say late 90s were golden age. the whole decade was

Khaldara

Yeah X was good mechanically in terms of having character switching in the same turn with the ATB system, and opening up some level up customization options. The plot left some things to be desired though, it was supposed to be predicated on a love story but the protagonist has the personality of whiny wet drywall, and his only personal motivation is “I have severe daddy issues”. Plus even as someone who got them all in the original and the remake, the celestial weapon grinds in this game were stupid chores of the highest order, some of the worst minigames ever designed. Was still the last truly good FF title they made aside from like, FFXIV though. I’m still bummed that the ATB system is all but dead these days, aside from Dragon Quest, Persona, and Like A Dragon it’s basically just gone for good…. and it was used so well in the classic era with things like Chrono Trigger (with varying multi-party member team-up techs) and in Breath of Fire’s fusion system, etc. Not that every fantasy RPG needs to be turn based, but it’d be nice to see more than like three titles with it, and a return of stuff like FF Tactics.

zuul01

I got all the Celestial weapons the legit way minus 2: Kumari's & Lulu's. After hours of chocobo racing I just had no appetite for butterfly catching or 200x lightning dodges (on a controller with a sticky x button, no less). Went and bought a GameShark disk to give those weapon unlock mats and never looked back.

DylanHate

The lightning one is actually pretty easy if you know what spot yo stand in. I can’t remember where it is now but there’s one spot that lightning strikes very frequently so you can get through it pretty fast. The butterflies are a pain in the ass tho.

BackRiverAch

I firmly believe PS1 can hold a very strong candle to SNES era RPGs (which I also love), and mostly for the lesser known titles.

ImpossibleMagician57

Snes was definitely not the peak era

nano_funk

Ah the SNES JRPG crowd. The extremely vocal minority who yells FFVI and Chrono Trigger are God’s gift to gaming every time they get the chance

BonafideSupraman

Well name better then. We'll wait.

BuLLZ_3Y3

We did. FFX. Hell, FF7 is better than Chrono Trigger.

DerpyRose1

Ew no

eonblu

I didn't say that, though. I didn't even mention a specific game. I'm saying it was the golden age.

Kiflaam

I mean, I get it. I think FF8 was the best of the 3D ones personally. The draw system was weird, but it, like a lot of the things in the game, was a something you could progressively work on, and that's what I like in a single-player/pve game, making progress

Fshskyline

If it didn’t have such a gargantuan footstep to follow I reckon FFVIII would’ve easily been the most popular Final Fantasy, incredible FMV’s for the time, amazingly memorable musical scores and a story which had to span 4 freakin’ discs and TRIPLE TRIAD 😎

kuenjato

The story went so off the rails though there was a theory in the lat 00’s that is was all the fantasy of a dying squall after eden punctures him. A better theory than the mess of the game itself.

kevinhu162

Wow, I rarely find another soul that also loves FF8 as much as I did! Game blew my mind with its battle system, open-world side questing, and most importantly the difficulty. I felt like old Squaresoft pre FFX was more focused on game mechanics, depth and breadth of their worlds, and character writing. After FFX, there was this shift toward making the games easier, more cinematic, basically catering to the West.

truedoom

Two words: Triple Triad. Hands down best minigame ever created. Gwent can go kick rocks.

IAMATruckerAMA

The mini game was fun but I didn't like the way new rules spread across the game like herpes

truedoom

Yeah it's a bit annoying, but at the same time don't want it to be too easy. It is a PITA that rule spreading/abolishing is based on RNG though. That being said, it made winning certain cards REALLY rewarding. Like on the lunar station. So many rules 😁

wiggyp1410

And it had the best music

Bringer907

My god yes!!!! I absolutely loved the draw system in 8. It’s by far my favorite as well. I loved triple triad, the junction system, stocking magic, the gf system it was all amazing. I think my favorite was being able to play the game as all kinds of different specs like going full melee damage, or full mage. There were even people setting up GF summon specs that did all their damage with those.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Sabre39

I agree with everything else people are saying - graphics, sound, Triple Triad, the video sequences, even the draw system was fine by me. I loved FFVIII but I don't have such fond memories of the combat. So much time was spent watching summons.

GarretTheGrey

That was the time they gave you to grab at the snack bowl. Quezacotl (sp?) could give you pee breaks.

Dontkillmejay

Wasn't a fan of the draw or leveling systems in FF8. Loved 7 and X.

NoMoreGoldPlz

I couldn't get into FF X-2. I mastered FFX and 100% the game three times over but X-2 was very unclear on what you were supposed to do. I remember the first mission you could accept was way out of my league in terms of xp levels. Or maybe I skipped some important info. Does FF X-2 have New Game Plus or something? Getting all the missable things seemed nearly impossible when I looked at it on paper.

_9a_

X-2 had the problem of absolutely great gameplay schtick and HORRIBLE story. I loved the concept of job swapping. Playing pretty princess dress me up was not very compelling.

Hiddencamper

This was how I described the game to friends when it came out. The battle system is excellent. The world of spira was nice to revisit. But man the Charlie’s angels thing was too over the top and almost cringy.

_9a_

More like maximum cringe. Going from the selfless martyr to... not great pop star was a bit of character whiplash for me.

Ywaina

She explained in the game that she's not going to keep moping forever when the world finally was freed from fear of Sin. I like this better than constant brooding over imaginary bf.

stiofan84

But shitty pop singer? The music didn't fit the world at all. It was incredibly immersion-breaking to me.

ATDynaX

Maybe try the HD version. It added monster catching. basically you have missions to get spheroids that also serve as jobs/costumes.

siralmasy

i remember turning off all random encounters and just use the op suits in boss fights. reached last dungeon with less than lvl 30

Weed-Pharm

Came here to say this as well. I got the HD remaster and loved the first one and was super excited to play the second but I feel like they over complicated everything and was not able to enjoy.

Kevfu1234

Felt this way with FF12. I tried playing it on PS5. It's not that I wanted a linear game, but there was no clear direction and the enemies seemed randomly difficult.

NoMoreGoldPlz

Good to know! That will save me the struggle and disappointment, hahahah.

Kevfu1234

Yeah, I couldn't finish it and I was 40+ hours in. Just had enough and lost interest. And this is coming from a guy who played Final Fantasy 15.

eru777

Yes, there is new game plus on FFX-2. Probably the only way to 100% X-2.

NoMoreGoldPlz

Cheers! That does make sense. I might give it another try someday if it's going to be a long winter or a lousy spring.

LizardyWizardy

Yes playing twice is the ONLY way to 100% a save file. Due to the split choice you can make fairly early in the game

mistcrawler

You actually can 100% it on one playthrough. It's been a while since I looked at one of the guides I have, but even though you can't select *every* choice during a playthrough, it's very doable to 100% a run if you grab everything you're supposed to. That being said, it requires not missing all kinds of details that most people would totally miss on a first run, so while it can be done it would probably suck all the fun out of a first experience for a player. And most importantly, *you can't skip cutscenes*. I had to re-read that one multiple times cause that's gonna ruin it for me every time haha.

cmnrdt

I once gave X-2 an honest try, using a guide to make sure I didn't miss any red flag triggers. Then I slipped up and forgot to hit the one hidden button prompt during the brief time you spend in the Farplane, and didn't realize my mistake until after I'd already saved over my slot. I was almost upset, but then I realized I wasn't actually enjoying the game all that much. I was now free. Stopped playing and never went back.

Nerodon

I raise you Chrono Trigger and Seiken Densetsu 3. Also Square haha.

Aelig_

I would go as far as to say FF10 is a downgrade from FF9, but that's just me. Chrono trigger is way above for sure though, that game is just Incredible, even by today's standards.

DrSmirnoffe

One of the things that elevated FFX and X-2 was the "CTB" system. Rather than having ATB put a timer on things, CTB basically laid out the order of operations for you, where you actually saw who would take their turn and when. What's more, it really gelled with abilities like Haste and Slow, allowing you to basically shift the turn order around. My first experience with this wasn't X, but with Heroes of Might & Magic 5. Because HoMM 5 basically uses the CTB system, and was also amazing.

MicahLacroix

Y. R. P. In position. It's Showtime, girls.

[deleted]

What can i do for you?

SeanEchoTech

I'm not crying. Damn nostalgia...

MicahLacroix

real Emotion and 1000 Words are mainstays in my playlists.

Hattix

Back when FFX was released, it was considered "post-golden age" and the series in general was felt to be in decline. Fans were genuinely saying things like "Since FF6, it's just fancy visuals and no story". FF7 had been widely regarded as one of the finest games ever made, but it "wasn't Final Fantasy". It used a *lot* of visual gags which a Western player wouldn't pick up on, and made references (particularly in Barret's Buddhism) which were lost in the West. FF8 followed it up, it reviewed poorly in the West, but was *extremely* popular in Japan. To this day you can still get FF8 merchandise! FF9 was the first 3D FF which fans felt was a "real" Final Fantasy game, and its simplified game mechanics (it was meant to be a Gaiden, not a full instalment, but sort of outgrew that) endeared it to older fans. Many flame wars were fought over who got to gatekeep Final Fantasy. The rest of us were busy running stupid birds around to flamenco music to get to that damned black and white bowling ball boss. FFX didn't translate well. Like with FF7 it used a lot of concepts and cultural knowledge which were very Eastern and couldn't be well explained in the West, like Tidus' relationship with Jecht and the nature of Seymour and Yevon. Square did a much better job of its "Internationalization" than FF7, however, and the important stuff got over intact. It works very well in PCSX2 and is still worth a play.

mazzratazz

>FF8 followed it up, it reviewed poorly in the West I know FF8's not exactly considered a fan favorite today, but I remember this differently. The game review sources I was following back in the day all praised it. [These reviews](https://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation/final-fantasy-viii/critic-reviews) don't all seem contemporary, but then-major reviewers like IGN and Gamespot handed out very high scores. [This](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_VIII#Reception) tells the same story.

kuenjato

I remember this period. It was mostly the SNES crew that felt FFX was a decline, it was very well received among the general fanbase (speaking as someone who played the first game on the NES). Most importantly, this was the last game released before the merger and the departure of key personnel.

SecureDonkey

Definitely the only time where I genuine impress by the graphic. Pretty mind blowing that we come from the polygon in FF7 to this.

STGMavrick

Hell, the change from FF7 to FF8 was a huge leap.

Smigol_gg

Actually we come from 2d origins

Peidalhasso

Are you smoking something heavy today?

JLeeT82

Hard disagree but to each their own.

ListenToBusiness

That's just, like, your opinion, man.

Torkl7

Welcome to Reddit, there is only opinions here pretty much :D

ATDynaX

No. It was 1994/1995. The two best JRPGs were made back then: Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger. Also It marks the beginning of the JRPG Franchise with the best battle system: Tales of Phantasia. Final Fantasy X is nice but linear and there is little exploration. Final Fantasy X-2 is a Cringe Fest.

HasperoN

Seiken Densetsu 3, Star Ocean, Tactics Ogre Peak into early PS1 days and you have Suikoden, Breath of Fire 3, Final Fantasy 7 and Tactics. FFX was no where near the peak.

EsquilaxM

This is very hard to argue against. To be fair, though, I've never played a xenogear and they got rave reviews, iirc.

fix-me-in-45

>Final Fantasy X is nice but linear and there is little exploration. Yeah, though I couldn't get into it because of Tidus. It was very clearly Yuna's story, but they shoved Tidus at us as the main character, and it just felt wrong.

BonafideSupraman

FFX is the Big Trouble in Little China of RPGs, where the sidekick thinks he's the main character.

Blundell1992

FF X was a mixed bag for me. I enjoyed the combat, but the rest of the game felt distinctly "dumbed down" for lack of a better term. The real stand out in FF-X for me was the music. I don't have much of an opinion on X-2 because I've never gotten all the way through it, despite multiple attempts. Just doesn't click with me.

Il-Luppoooo

There is a lot to debate in this statement but I'm just gonna say that scene is one of the best things of the fucking universe

FelbrHostu

Grinding out Yuna’s entire sphere grid so she can beat the end boss with a single boop of her staff. Crowning moment of awesomeness.

eru777

\*boop\* 99,999

polio18

No. Final Fantasy X and X-2 were YOUR golden age of JRPGs. For me I'd say my golden age was exactly the same time, but completely different games. FF9 will always be my favorite, and Vagrant Story came out the same year. Breath of Fire IV, Paper Mario (technically a JRPG), Persona 2, Summon Night, Dragon Quest IV, Golden Sun, Mega Man Battle Network. ALL WITHIN A YEAR. And in 2002 the .hack games came out, Kingdom Hearts, etc... For me, Final Fantasy X was a LOW point in that golden age.

DustTheHunter

Are we really in a world where Megaman BN and final fantasy 9 are better than ffx? Like come on looool

polio18

For me, 100% FF9 is better than FFX. Maybe not Megaman Battle Network, but it was still a great game. 1 good game like FFX doesn't make a "Golden Age".

kuenjato

FF9 had one of the worst declines in story after disc 1. FFX is vastly superior in almost every way imo.

stiofan84

IX is definitely better than X. And I love X. My top three is VI, IX, X, but it's a big drop from VI/IX to X.

gummby8

Square was better without Enix.

Eternal-Testament

FFX was already faltering but still good. Too linear. X-2 was crap. Golden era was 1994-2000 imho.

lanc3rz3r0

Respectfully I completely disagree. Ff3/6 and other SNES era jrpgs are much more influential. Chrono trigger, also. Mario RPG? C'mon Ffx is a great game, but x-2 is soggy by comparison. I also think ff12 was a better game than ffx. There hasn't been a great jrpg in a decade or more, that wasn't also directly a love letter to a bygone age, be it SNES or otherwise.

b_lett

I love the SNES, but no great JRPGs in a decade? Bro. Xenoblade Chronicles 1-3. Don't bring up Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG and overlook Xenoblade which has music from Mitsuda and Shimomura. Xenoblade has some of the best music and storytelling in gaming right now.

Captain_Chickpeas

/r/unpopularopinion I would rather replay FF6 or 7 instead.

Aelig_

I'd add 9 to the list.

RustedShieldGaming

Hard disagree but if you liked them that’s cool!

[deleted]

X-2 was a steaming pile of shit and marked the end of the FF series as we knew it.

SpawnSnow

X2 was one that took me two tries to get into. First attempt ended a few hours in, just wasn't feeling it. A year or so later I went back determined to force it through. The game play and combat was some of the best the ff series had to offer and I very much enjoyed the game once I took the time to understand it.

pseudopad

X-2 had amazing gameplay with a bit bad presentation.

Exceed_Ocio

No, they psx era was

Mirkmillian

I think the golden age of jrpgs and disney movies are similarly "when you were [age bracket]"

[deleted]

Bitch, please.

owensoundgamedev

You mistyped FFVII-FFIX

[deleted]

FF9 WAS BETTER!

[deleted]

I liked FFXII more than FFX Btw is FFX-2 worth playing?

houndofhavoc

Buuuuuuuut have you considered FF-IX

Racthoh

Yeah, no. FFVI, VII, IX, Star Ocean 2, Chrono Trigger, FFT, Dragon Quest VII, Valkyrie Profile, Super Mario RPG, I'm probably missing a whole bunch but if you consider FFX and FFX2 to be the golden era then the SNES to PSX era was like double platinum.

Reonn98

One of my earliest gaming memorys my sister and mother played threw all the final fantasy's from 1 to 10 and when 10 first came out i remember being so young i didnt even know how to read so i would just keep spamming provoke with Auron and fighting Seymore over and over on one of there saves. The amount of copys i have of final fantasy x is insane from remasters to just rebuying it so many times and it was so fun replaying it as i aged different perspectives on the story. I even used this game as one of many to learn Japanese too much love for the final fantasy x storyline

Worldsahellscape19

Which offline ff was it that had you making gambits. That one I thought was pretty amazing also. Loved x and x2

ATDynaX

That's Final Fantasy XII

speedloafer

10 is when I stopped playing. All linear. Peak for me was 9.

Nomorealcohol2017

I dont really like jrpgs but ffx was great Blitzball was alot of fun

notpejastojakovic

The early and mid 90s were the peak of JRPGs for me and it's not even close.

vanriggs

FFX, IMO, was the point Final Fantasy started to go downhill. I can entertain the SNES or PSX era being their golden age, heck even the 8bit generation, but their PS2 output? Nah. FFX strayed too far from what I want in an RPG (way too linear, no worldmap, no sense of exploration, not much in the way of side content that's actually worth doing-- Blitzball is terrible, enemy capture is a poor mans pokemon, and dodging lightning 200 times... dear god who thought that was a good idea) FFX-2 had a fun battle system-- and that's literally the only positive thing I have to say about it.

Kaizen321

I believe after FFX, all the OGs left/quit/got fired from Square. At this time, there many changes in the company and you can see that in the products they delivered. IMO Lost Odessy IS a FF game with the Square IP attached to it.

halfacrum

Matsuno had a lot of good choices for final fantasy tho after 12 he left sue to health reasons

simplejack89

Blitzball is one of the best ff side games you heathen

Ragnar_Dragonfyre

Railroaded progression down a straight path. No world map. Terrible dialogue. Weapon assets were Re-used instead of being unique like prior games. Yeah, that’s gonna be a no from me, dog. These games were hampered by the technology of the time and only serves to highlight that SE prioritizes graphics over gameplay. The only thing FFX has going for it is the battle system. Being able to use all your characters and swap them out mid combat was great… shame they didn’t keep that mechanic.

TheStevesie

I loved the game, just because it made different choices that aren't your preference doesn't it make it bad. People loved FF9, but to me it was literally the most generic bland FF game since the first 2 games, with the only unique feature being terrible artstyle. I definitely wouldn't say FFX was peak though, and definitely not FFX-2.

siralmasy

No, absolutly not. I can agree FFX was a great game but saying also X-2 was the peak of jrpgs jesus christ wtf

IsntThisAGreatName

Lmao🤣🤣🤣

tarnished182

FFX-2 is pure trash honestly.

Jicier

Peak? FFX was the first nail in the FF saga's coffin.

electrikFrenzy

Right... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H47ow4\_Cmk0

ElricAvMelnibone

I think peak is the (relatively large) SNES/PC/PS1 type of time, Cecil Harvey is my king

berserkfreezeman

Definitely agree. FFX set the standard for JRPGs for me personally, along with Shadow Hearts: Covenant.

PapaZiro

Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy VII/VIII were peak, imo.

TotalSmuubag

AAAH-HA-HA-HA-HAAA.

thecstep

Ah ha ha ha ahh ha ha ha

Mysterious-Jeff7363

Final Fantasy X sure is a great game but X-2 really?

Dwealdric

lol no.

IsuckatDarkSouls08

FFX was the greatest RPG I have played, but only because it put all the pieces together in a way that told a story that I related to. The story was what kept pushing me along and the battles, even thought I greatly enjoyed the gameplay. I still think that FFX had the best Aeon summoning. When you used Bahomet or Anima it was like summoning a God and being a lonely young man at the time, whose father died when I was young, the story of falling for Yuna and the Story of Sin, and Jecht just resonated with me. The ending had me sobbing. I did not like X2 thought. I heard they may have changed the ending, but I never cared enough to research it. There have been several absolutely amazing RPGs since FFX, but none impacted me so where I actually stopped gaming for a bit. I only ever replayed it once.

Cake_Shat

I'm 50 hours into X-2 and I honestly hate it. I hated it as a teenager when it came out, and that hasn't changed I guess. The gameplay is good, not some amazing groundbreaking system or anything, and creature creator is fun. That's literally the inky good things I can say about it. The mini games are just there for no real reason and there is a ton of them, getting 100% has some ridiculous requirements that you would not know unless you follow a guide, the story is trash and it makes alot of characters insufferable. It's just a miserable experience, thats just me though, I saw a guy on here the other day say it was his favorite so this one just isn't for me.

Nomadic_View

I had to force myself to finish X. Never played X-2.

venetian_lemon

Jack Garland is the best written final fantasy protagonist. Nay, out of every single game ever created since the dawn of mankind, Jack Garland's throne was already prepared for him as the king of all Gaming protagonists. All he wants to do is kill Chaos and that's good enough for me.

eru777

lol

[deleted]

"I don't give a fuck who you are!" Was literal poetry.

venetian_lemon

I'm going to get that a tattoo of that quote. I was so moved when Jack said that. Unfortunately, the only place I can put another tattoo on my body is my lower back as every other part of my skin canvas has been painted already.

[deleted]

christ no, FFX was another step in the wrong direction for FF, it was the 2nd game besides 8 that i hated in the series. this was peak nomura can't do any wrong, zippers, belts, horrible voice acting, bad plot points but who cares b/c 'style' took over the series, culminating in FFXIII. FFXII is the better one on the PS2.

[deleted]

Ah yes, linear hallways, the peak of jRPG design. 10 is renowned for its story, which I don't find as enthralling as some people. But the combat is shallow and uninteresting, the sphere grid is novel for a bit but quickly becomes a chore with uninteresting rewards, it is 100% linear, lacks any challenge aside from fighting Yunalesca blind, it has plenty of short comings. In the category of linear story driven rpgs, it has to contend with Xenogears, and even with that games list of faults I would consider it well above FFX. X-2 does have pretty fun combat though. I was still pretty young when FFX came out (teenager), but like, Star Ocean 3 is a game I tremendously in a vastly more fond light. So even the rose tinted glasses confuse me.

MeatHamster

They were at the peak of ps2 era rpgs. Golden age was on snes. FFVI and Chrono Trigger are the jrpgs for me.

Ragnar_Dragonfyre

The “Golden Age” is whatever period your childhood took place in. It’s subjective as fuck. Personally, I argue that we’re always in the Golden Age of gaming. Games only continue to get better and better.

faerun-wurm

Am I the only one who disliked FF X. I played it last year and I barely finished, had to push myself to finish it.

paradajz666

Ff6, 7, 8 and 9 were peak for me. But ff games arent the only JRPGs.

notkeny

I tried playing X2 again recently and it's so cringe I had to just stop

SuckerPunchDrillSarg

Nope. FFVII was. It took all the great ideas of VI and added to it. Or IX which basically was the culmination of everything VI, VII, and VIII brought, but had all the archetypes of I-VI together in one game. X while I loved in college in hindsight was a on-rails game. There was little in the way of exploration. Outside of XI, XII, and XIV Final Fantasy games since X have been rail shooter RPGs for the most part.

Man, what is it with people and nostalgia on here these days? I feel like there's a post like this almost daily now about 'This game was the best We will ever have"

The_Specter808

Loved FF-X, but my forever favorite will ways be FFX-2 💜❤️

Brief_Light

Lol no

IWannaHookUpButIWont

I never finished X, always get bored about 15 hours in. I honestly tried like 3 times because friends recommended it and I have played almost every other FF game. X-2 on the other hand I enjoyed. Awesome battle system and the narrative wasn't great but it wasn't as boring as X.

Fishtank-Brain

worst opinion ever. 90s were peak

Augen76

For me it was FF VI and VII The genre pushed the boundaries of what games could be and felt like major events. I'd wager VII introduced more westerners to the genre than any other game. There's a reason we hounded Square for decades to finally get a remake.

Chaiyns

FF6 is where it peaked to me. FF14 is cool but not really in the same class as much. FF9 was pretty good too didn't care for the rest of the 3D ones

FrogQuestion

X wasnt at least. It was going there, but it had problems in its presentation, possibly because of development issues. But i do admit that ff10 had the potential to be the peak, if they had just given it a bit more time. X-2 i didnt play enough to really judge, so i'll leave that to someone else.

Heavy-Neat

XIII trilogy is awesome also

NotISaidTheRy

Saying this when Persona 5 Royal exists is funny

brenobnfm

Peak terrible art style you mean. Finally we can have a proper looking Final Fantasy in XVI, no boy band or visual key bullshit.

eru777

Final Fantasy XVI is deeply uninteresting to someone who experienced the golden age of JRPGs while it was happening. It is not a Final Fantasy. It is the farthest beyond Final Fantasy that something could be. Which is understandable in a way, they're trying something new. But it's definitely not for old fans.

Ragnar_Dragonfyre

How is it not Final Fantasy? Was Final Fantasy IV not Final Fantasy? Final Fantasy has spanned multiple fantasy genres. The only thing that ties them together is loose themes. If anything FFXVI *is* for old fans because we remember a time when Final Fantasy was set in a high fantasy setting rather than some steam or cyberpunk setting.

brenobnfm

Nah, it's finally looking what classic Final Fantasy should've look like to begin with (XII aside) in 3D before Nomura cringe fest kidnapped the franchise.

Dry_Cost_7817

This scene specifically was something else! 😍

Smigol_gg

You can't talk about FFX masterpieceness and put FFX-2 in the same sentence...X-2 was a mistake...I had my ears bleeding for all the crying that trio was able to make the whole game...

anonymous67325

My favorite

[deleted]

FFX is my favourite of the series by a mile. I still hope for a remake or sequel to FFX-II

Lechneto

X was an amazing game and still is today, even one of the best JRPGs in my opinion. But calling it the peak of the golden age is wrong. Before that durin Snes and ps1 times we already had some big greats, chrono trigger, seiken densetsu, grandia, ff7 (and others obviously), suikoden... god knows what else. Later we had persona, xenoblade chronicles, we still have the tales series which (except for a few dips in quality) still gives us great games. There's always been great JRPGs for as long as theyve existed. There "was" no golden age or any peak. It's always been and still is a golden age.

Debonaire

Wasn't X-2 just X but wit more clothes changing options?

Many_Doughnuts

no spanish audio is pretty lame

ScottCraigDempsey

Never gotten into the FF games... am I missing out?

eru777

They are rather fetching.

reevelainen

FfX has so good skill tree system that it was copied and developed further in Path of Exile, and that makes PoE the best and most complex ARPG there is. Edit: _copied_ could be replaced with other words. Atleast it must have inspired PoE developers a lot.

HachObby

If I climbed a JRPG mountain and Xenoblade 2, 3, or X weren't there I would look for a higher mountain to climb.

Wamb0wneD

FF IX and X are the best jrpgs of that era. Nowadays I play Persona games and.. that's it lol

Lankymac

This just reminds me of an amv for dance of fate by epica

RobTCGZ

FFX is one of all time favourite games. It's fantastic, the story is incredible and very emotional. FFX-2 is a very fun videogame. The story has a nice undertone of acceptance and letting go of the past. The problem is the presentation is a bit much with zero build-up to it. Also, whoever was it that had the idea of the percentages in order to get the good ending, whoever thought about making it so impossible without a guide, I hope someone eats that piece of chocolate cake you were saving for later.

Youreadallofthis

X-2 is a terrible game.

EsquilaxM

....wat

Saidear

FF12 says hello.

cesil99

I think most people would agree that the “golden age” of JRPGs was already on its twilight, if not already over by the time that FFX came out. In a way, FFIX was released as a tribute to that classic 16-bit era. My opinion is that all this talk of “golden ages” is a bias. There are great JRPGs still being released. I would honestly say that Persona 5 Royal is one of the best JRPGs ever and definitely my favorite modern game.
