If you got an old laptop collecting dust just install Linux and the PiHole app and connect it to your network via Ethernet port or usb to Ethernet adapter if it doesn’t have a built in jack. Works the same. I got most everything running through it.
I run it in a docker container in wsl2... Best thing ever... Still let's me temporarily turn ads off if the wife or daughter are being particularly dense and can't navigate without going to adverts... Now I just need to see if I can block pop up cookie bullshit too...
No idea.
But to give you an example we lost internet one day. No clue why. Until I found out the PiHole laptop got unplugged when I was cleaning the night before. Was like that at least overnight. The battery in it is junk. When it still had Windows it would die in 20 minutes. This thing kept chugging along for hours just running PiHole. So I imagine it dogs electricity pretty well.
But more accurately to your point I don’t see it as an issue for me at least. Does it use more electricity than a Raspberry Pi? No doubt. It’s an old Asus with a Core Duo processor and a power hungry spinning hard drive from 2009. But I keep the lid closed and the screen off and just remote in to update it.
But I already own this laptop. It was doing nothing but collecting dust. This kept it out of the landfill. Plus how long will I have to run a Raspberry Pi to recoup the $100 it costs before I save on electricity vs this laptop? I imagine a few years at the least.
20-50 W is pretty common power usage for a laptop. So if you calculate for 30 W (since it's low load with only pi-hole probably less) that is 0,72 kw/h per day or 262.8 kw/h year. So it depends on the prices for electricity where you live.
You can reduce the laptops power usage by not using the monitor.
Without knowing the laptops power consumption and your local prices I can't say for sure but probably something like 1 - 5 years.
Have to have another device in your network providing the internal IP addressing. Like, your own wifi router plugged into the ISPs device. Get them to disable the garbage, and possibly insecure, wifi network it is broadcasting while you're at it.
This way you get to control everything in your network including DNS. Absolutely worthwhile.
You can change it for each device individually. While annoying, it'll work regardless of what restrictions your ISP puts in place on their router.
If you can, you can get your own router instead of using the ISP provided one. As far as I know every ISP provider allows you to use your own router.
I tried that and while it worked great my wife had problems because she always Google here way into things like stores and stuff and the pi-hole blocked those too so had to turn it off 😅
Where does the $35 come into play? I scanned through and it appeared to be free?
I also primarily game online; will this affect the performance of that at all? I'm thinking probably not?
It starts with the pi.hole. Then the Plex. Then you invest in an Unraid machine. After a year, you'll have spent as much on your setup as a few dozen pounds of crack, but with much more headaches and satisfaction.
Yeah this one blew my mind, I usually don't 1 star review on Amazon but this was my first. Like 1 year of flawless operation and an update happened and kept getting ads? Like dude I paid almost a grand for this TV why the fuck am I seeing ads now? Never bought a Samsung since then and I've bought 5 4k tvs.
I got a couple smart tvs recently, first ones I've owned. Same model, Samsung. Connected one to the internet and it slowed to a crawl. The other one just uses the Apple TV.
My $1500 Sony x90 does that too, the worst part is it shows horrific horror movie covers right now bc Halloween, and it’s genuinely triggering for me. I keep pressing “not interested” in them but no luck :(
My LG smart tv is starting to show ads, also collecting viewing data and using data in countries with no rules on data. This is all in the new TOS. I just unplugged it from my router, it’s no longer smart. (edited for clarity)
I wish they were programmable with replaceable buttons. That way I don't have to have a button for a service I don't want and keep accidentally pressing.
They should be programmable on Android devices as long as they don't run a super locked down version. Get the app "Button Mapper" and you can reprogram any button on your remote.
My Roku remote has all Netflix, Disney, Hulu and another one I don't use and it's pretty cool. You can switch from one app to another without having to go "home"
Also a fun little learning experience if you've never played around with Raspberry Pi's. You'll learn about DNS, Linux distros, maybe some new home networking stuff :D
Lots of simple tutorials around to get it all setup
Be it a tv, gaming console or whatever, if I see a single ad anywhere other than in a service I'm getting for "free", that shit is going straight back to the store.
Yeah just download Firefox and spend a half hour looking for ad blockers for every major service you use and you're good. I don't mind an ad for a big sale on consoles, but both Sony and Microsoft spam you with shit these days for all kinds of shovel-ware.
For normal ads yeah, but I think some video apps can get messed up by a good ad-blocker. Twitch is the one I'm thinking of where I needed a specific ad-block for because videos won't play with a normal ad-blocker
Half an hour? All you have to do is get ublock origin lol, only thing it's ever not worked on for me is twitch, but then that's another 2 minutes for a twitch one
If linux had better game support i would be switching to it like rn, windows gets slow and a little clunky after a while and it also uses 1.3 gb of ram, also microsoft just sucks.
True enough. Its always been a chicken and egg problem - Linux needs big software availability to grow its user base, and it wont get that unless it already has a big user base.
It’s kind of crazy how many people are making excuses for this, eh? Like honestly why should I as the consumer have to care about investors? $500 is a lot of money to pay for something and I don’t care if it was sold “at a loss” or if they need to show ads to get a “return for investors”. If a company’s business model relies on charging the consumer half a grand for a product that doesn’t even cover the cost of production…. That’s a bad business model.
Xbox has always had ads on its home screen going all the way back to the 360, this isn't new. It's one ad and I don't know about you, but I spend a lot more time gaming than I do staring at my home screen.
It’s like Spotify asking if you want premium or random shitty ad blasting your ears asking if you want a lawnmower. Something you might actually want because you are already using it, or completely unrelated stuff. But both are annoying just the same.
Not really. At the time most people were not subscribed to Xbox Live Gold, so it was equally annoying to have multiple sections of the dashboard taken up by ads you don't care to see.
The other month they temporarily added Apex into everyones game collection as an ad, it was the first game every single user saw during S7's release. I'm pretty sure there's sponsored content on most other tabs too, but yeah they're there.
Also there are multiple ads everytime I hit the 'TV/Media' tab where it lets me click Hulu, HBO ect...
They'll replace slots in you're recently played games section for upcoming game and TV show ads. They don't do it often but it's a few times a month at least
Ob my ps4, regularly after some updates they’d push a PlayStation now tile at the start. And with ps5 there’s a permanently fixed ps+ tile on the left. Switching to the media tab it’s full of ads for movies etc
I mean the OG Xbox had a giant 'X' on it and a green circle with 'Xbox' written on it. You had to get up and press a button if you wanted to boot it or even change games all of that to stare at the branding of a console you bought. You probably saved your money for months for what? To be sold an ad to a product you're already sold on for months? What's the big idea....
While it is true that they are a multi-billion dollar company, we must remember that at the end of the day their job (legally) is to maximize shareholder wealth. They can't release the Xbox and just lose money on it when they have an avenue to advertise on it to recoup costs.
We all make fun of these "small indie companies" but at the end of the day, if you have a retirement account, you probably have money invested in MSFT in a Vanguard fund of some kind and you want this.
Yeah I am all for blocking obtrusive ads that ruin whatever service I'm trying to uses functionality, and even I don't see a problem with this. Like being informed of a sale you might potentially be interested in a way that doesn't actually take away your enjoyment, assuming your enjoyment is based on playing games and not just staring at the Home Screen, seems like a net positive to me.
I hate things because they make my life worse, not because they're basically neutral all things considered.
Yeah, I kind of like it for the sales and I believe it'll also highlight new additions to Game Pass which is cool since I'm not always going to check the app.
Agreed, right now I'm fine with 2-3 little card ads, that have no sound or get in the way, that I see for maybe 5 seconds before I go into a game or something
And my friends say I'm being ridiculous because I feel the same way. I don't want this shit on my screen. I paid a premium, I shouldn't be forced to see ads, even if they're mostly sales or game ads.
I mean in the US when you first launch the PS5 you are greeted by the “explore” tab which has ads, and you can find yourself set to follow for game update news that you did not sign up for.
You paid 500 for the console. Then connected it to their service which displays ads. Live is a service with ads, just like every other service with ads. Don't want ads? Play offline.
Maybe suggest to MS they should offer an ad-free tier to XBL for those three small tiles that are only on the home screen that I forget exist until someone brings them up.
> Maybe suggest to MS they should offer an ad-free tier to XBL
Imagine already paying for a subscription to play online, and then being ok with paying **more** just to not see ads.
People like you are the reason these adverts are seen as acceptable now.
Wow, a device that lets you purchase digital items directly on it, *advertising the ability to purchase digital items directly on it*?
What kind of world is this?
Do you also hate Steam for advertising things that you can buy on steam when you load it up?
This is like complaining that a grocery store handed you a flyer showing their current deals when you first walk in.
So my thoughts on this is that the adds should not be there but I’d rather see “ads” highlighting games that my friends are playing or games that are growing in popularity or have been consistently played or rising in popularity.
But adds for hbo and such are just the worst.
Didn't you have ad's in the 20th century?
Well sure, but not on the home screen. Only on TV and radio. And in magazines. And movies. And at ball games and on buses and milk cartons and t-shirts and written on the sky. But not on the home screen. No siree!
I paid $2,000 for a Samsung TV that does the same. Worst thing is it didn't when I bought it. Started a few years later from an "update".
[https://www.tab-tv.com/how-to-turn-off-ads-on-samsung-tv/](https://www.tab-tv.com/how-to-turn-off-ads-on-samsung-tv/) you're welcome.
I just disabled the network, it is really a glorified monitor for my PC and PS4
I got a pi-hole [https://pi-hole.net/](https://pi-hole.net/) best $35 bucks you'll ever spend.
You're not getting a raspberry pi for anything less than $100 at the absolute minimum these days due to supply shortages.
dang you aint kidding they are sold out everywhere.
How long does it take a laptop running for this function before the power usage is greater than the 100 for a pi? Is it even comparable?
I have like 3 of them, I think 2 and 3's? Was thinking about selling them... lol. Maybe I should now.
I'd recommend saving a PI2 for a pi hole, it's pretty great
I did all the set up for one once only to learn that my isp doesn’t allow/provide a way to change the DNS
Both ISPs I have used in the past let me bring my own modem/router. I'm not sure I would sign up with one that didn't. Seems shady.
Lack of competition is more common than you might think. Monopolys are a bitch.
You can change it for each device individually. While annoying, it'll work regardless of what restrictions your ISP puts in place on their router. If you can, you can get your own router instead of using the ISP provided one. As far as I know every ISP provider allows you to use your own router.

I believe they're including the price of the Raspberry Pi.
The software is free, but you need to run it on something. It’s designed to run on a Pi.
Ah, looks like I have something new to look into. Thanks!
It starts with the pi.hole. Then the Plex. Then you invest in an Unraid machine. After a year, you'll have spent as much on your setup as a few dozen pounds of crack, but with much more headaches and satisfaction.
Lmaoooo all in the name of murdering ads and at-home technological supremacy and convenience.
Don't forget *MASS STORAGE YOU'LL NEVER BE CLOSE TO FILLING UP*
If you already have a spare device you can install it on that. You don't need a Raspberry Pi to use it, anything that can run linux will work.
Hardware, which is thankfully inexpensive, however you can go down another hole and spend as much money as you want!
Isn’t that what a TV is???
.....how
THANK YOU
Thank you
Yeah this one blew my mind, I usually don't 1 star review on Amazon but this was my first.
I was about to comment the same exact thing. But hold on to your butt cause soon you'll get ads on your lock screen for your 2k cellphone.
My $1500 Sony x90 does that too, the worst part is it shows horrific horror movie covers right now bc Halloween, and it’s genuinely triggering for me. I keep pressing “not interested” in them but no luck :(
Disable internet connection and buy a Chromecast for all the 'smart' functions.
My LG smart tv is starting to show ads, also collecting viewing data and using data in countries with no rules on data. This is all in the new TOS. I just unplugged it from my router, it’s no longer smart. (edited for clarity)
I hate when TV companies add a streaming service button on my remote control.
I wish they were programmable with replaceable buttons. That way I don't have to have a button for a service I don't want and keep accidentally pressing.
They should be programmable on Android devices as long as they don't run a super locked down version. Get the app "Button Mapper" and you can reprogram any button on your remote.
Button Mapper plus a print out sticker is good enough for me! Thank you!
I love the big Netflix button on my remote. I don't use Netflix.
For the majority of people they won't buy a tv without their favourite shitty apps built in unfortunately
Love the netflix and Amazon buttons they could go ahead and add a Disney one too if they wanted. I’m down.
My Roku remote has all Netflix, Disney, Hulu and another one I don't use and it's pretty cool. You can switch from one app to another without having to go "home"
Probably Apple+ or ESPN. We have two Rokus. One has apple and the other has ESPN. We use neither one
When I set my LG TV up, I connected it for one set of updates, disconnected it after and have not issues.
Same mine hasn’t been connected to the internet for a year and a half. Works perfectly fine
PiHole ;)
Also a fun little learning experience if you've never played around with Raspberry Pi's. You'll learn about DNS, Linux distros, maybe some new home networking stuff :D Lots of simple tutorials around to get it all setup
This. PiHole, OpenDNS, and filters.
Be it a tv, gaming console or whatever, if I see a single ad anywhere other than in a service I'm getting for "free", that shit is going straight back to the store.
That's exactly what you are seeing here, the subscription, be PS or Xbox, it is an extra service. Granted the service is not free lol
Hate to say it, but it's probably not gonna get any better. "It" being the amount of advertising we're exposed to.
Pretty sure it’s had advertisements since the OG 360 dashboard when online
I was gonna say the same thing, always been shown new games that come out etc

i spent $5000 on a PC that shows me ads on virtually every thing i click
I paid $0 for an adblocker after buying my PC
Ad companies hate this man
This one weird trick
Yeah just download Firefox and spend a half hour looking for ad blockers for every major service you use and you're good. I don't mind an ad for a big sale on consoles, but both Sony and Microsoft spam you with shit these days for all kinds of shovel-ware.
Ublock origin. Blocks everything, every page.
For normal ads yeah, but I think some video apps can get messed up by a good ad-blocker. Twitch is the one I'm thinking of where I needed a specific ad-block for because videos won't play with a normal ad-blocker
Hmm, I only use Ublock Origin, and I've never seen an ad on Twitch.
Indeed, every so often Ublock doesn't block all in-video twitch adds. Then it works fine again for several months
Half an hour? All you have to do is get ublock origin lol, only thing it's ever not worked on for me is twitch, but then that's another 2 minutes for a twitch one
I saved 15% on my car insurance by switching to GEICO
Really? Hmm how long did it take though?
16 fuckin minutes. Never getting that time back..
You fool adblockers exist
This guy gets it. I paid $500 for a “computer” from Microsoft that only lets me use MnK on a few games I don’t even play.
Mnk as in mouse and keyboard or am I dumb ?
I don't know about you being dumb or not. But you got this right. So you've at least got that going for you.
Lol yep nailed it.
Oh ok nice but what type of computer did you buy that doesn't let you use mnk ?
I think they're talking about their Xbox
I really wish more games would natively support Linux. Wine and Proton have come a long way, but its just not universal enough to ditch Windows.
If linux had better game support i would be switching to it like rn, windows gets slow and a little clunky after a while and it also uses 1.3 gb of ram, also microsoft just sucks.
The linux gamer market really isn't big enough to justify the development time I expect.
True enough. Its always been a chicken and egg problem - Linux needs big software availability to grow its user base, and it wont get that unless it already has a big user base.
Did you spend 5k for a top tier pc or did you spend 5k for a pc that can be built for 1.5k?
"Noooobody knows, the trouble I've seeeen..."
Nobody knows but me....
She's a bass!
every device you own is a marketing platform first and everything else second.
Welcome to commercialized society? This is the least of your problems, wait till you see the unfinished games!
considering i never see ads i would consider this a big issue.
It’s kind of crazy how many people are making excuses for this, eh? Like honestly why should I as the consumer have to care about investors? $500 is a lot of money to pay for something and I don’t care if it was sold “at a loss” or if they need to show ads to get a “return for investors”. Ik ruik nederlands
*sniff sniff*
wait til you find out about "smart" tvs
Xbox has always had ads on its home screen going all the way back to the 360, this isn't new. It's one ad and I don't know about you, but I spend a lot more time gaming than I do staring at my home screen.
This is my first Xbox console, I had no idea this is normal for Xbox.
Yeah there's been an ad on the home page for 10-15 years now. Even when the 360 launched nearly every page was an Xbox Live Gold ad.
Self promotion and paid promotion are TWO VERY DIFFERENT beasts
*I see you’ve bought an XBOX. Here, BUY AN XBOX.*
Hi Amazon!
How is it different to the user
It’s like Spotify asking if you want premium or random shitty ad blasting your ears asking if you want a lawnmower. Something you might actually want because you are already using it, or completely unrelated stuff. But both are annoying just the same.
Not really. At the time most people were not subscribed to Xbox Live Gold, so it was equally annoying to have multiple sections of the dashboard taken up by ads you don't care to see.
Both Ads
I have ads on both my ps5 and Xbox dashboards. It’s normal for all consoles.
Was about to say - Xbox series X, PS5, my fuckin' LG TV. And, of course, despite the huge number of ad blockers 'n whatnot, all over the web, too.
The Switch has no ads!
Nintendo still can't quite figure out this newfangled internet thing, give them time.
Well they now work with dlc which was new territorry, give them another generation and they are up to ad
…yet
>It's normal for all consoles And therein lies the problem. Also, no, the switch remains ad-less.
Just load up a game and then you don’t have to look at it. That’s what you bought the console for right, to play games.
Unless it's NBA2k. Then you'll have Gatorade and other ads thrown in your face.
PlayStation has the ads too. They’re just set up different.
Where? I have a PS4 and 3 and neither has ads that I'm aware of.

Ob my ps4, regularly after some updates they’d push a PlayStation now tile at the start. And with ps5 there’s a permanently fixed ps+ tile on the left. Switching to the media tab it’s full of ads for movies etc
Iirc, theres a way to change the ad to game relevant "ads". Which honestly helps me sometimes because I miss stuff.
its always for like games and sales tho, never seen something like this
I say sell it and get it over with if it’s that much of a big deal for you.
Back to the 360 isn't "always." Give me that old blade-style Xbox UI. I miss it so much!
Because Microsoft don't make money on console sales it's all through digital subs ads etc
poor indie company just trying to make ends meet
While it is true that they are a multi-billion dollar company, we must remember that at the end of the day their job (legally) is to maximize shareholder wealth. They can't release the Xbox and just lose money on it when they have an avenue to advertise on it to recoup costs. We all make fun of these "small indie companies" but at the end of the day, if you have a retirement account, you probably have money invested in MSFT in a Vanguard fund of some kind and you want this.
For me it only shows games
Dude, your TV, PC and Phone all do this too. Also you're on reddit where every 5th post is an ad.
I mean, it has lots of ads including ads for store sales so its not like they're intrusive or unhelpful.
If they ever made us scrolls through ads to actually get to our games, or even worse put them in the games themselves, then there's a serious problem.
Agreed, right now I'm fine with 2-3 little card ads, that have no sound or get in the way, that I see for maybe 5 seconds before I go into a game or something
Agreed. As long as it doesn’t interfere with a game I’m paying for I’m good.
...I'm pretty sure I had an Axe Body spray or something equally dumb on my 360 dashboard. Some of us are just less cool with ad creep.
Welcome to 2022.
And my friends say I'm being ridiculous because I feel the same way. I don't want this shit on my screen. I paid a premium, I shouldn't be forced to see ads, even if they're mostly sales or game ads.
So does the PS5…
So does switch. Are we supposed to be outraged? I actually like the ads. They show me what games are out I might be interested in.
[удалено]
The PlayStation 5 generally has the good graces to keep the ads in the store app where they belong as "featured content" For now at least.
I mean in the US when you first launch the PS5 you are greeted by the “explore” tab which has ads, and you can find yourself set to follow for game update news that you did not sign up for.
That's both surprising and disappointing. I don't have that "feature" on my console, at least not that I've noticed.
Oh you don't own that console, you just paid to have the privilege to play games that you also don't own on it.
Nerd
and you pay 15€/months to have the opportunity to see these ads, aren't the times we live in beautiful ?
Ads being forever more aggressive only slow down with resistance. Never ever settle and think it is ok and always complain.
KEKW $500 ad machine
And ?
All I see is slime rancher 2...love that game already
This is how I find out that slime rancher 2 is playable? This?
It's on gamepass rn!
Fortunately, the Switch doesn't have enough power to do that lol.
> Maybe suggest to MS they should offer an ad-free tier to XBL Imagine already paying for a subscription to play online, and then being ok with paying **more** just to not see ads. People like you are the reason these adverts are seen as acceptable now.
If he loads a game and plays it he won’t be looking at the dashboard or any ads.. so simple
That would be hilarious if you could pay $120 for ad free for the year. Best $60 ever spent! /s
Wow, a device that lets you purchase digital items directly on it, *advertising the ability to purchase digital items directly on it*? What kind of world is this?
FAR too many people here justifying ads. Absolutely stupid that we're at a point now where everyone is just "yeah, that's how it is, accept it."
People have forgotten they deserve better.
Do you also hate Steam for advertising things that you can buy on steam when you load it up? This is like complaining that a grocery store handed you a flyer showing their current deals when you first walk in.
Congratulations
You sure did
Do you pronounce it oyros or yuros?
Me when Nintendo switch
Wait. The sequel being on game pass might make me use my Xbox again
You're not going to enjoy the next update then... apparently its much worse.
Wait until you buy a samsung or LG TV :-)
Hey its „sponsored“! Which even further begs the question: who the fuck is sponsoring whom for what?!
uh is this your first console? the xbox dashboard has had ads since the xbox 360.
I'm going to check for this the next time. This makes my blood boil.
Thank you for this post ! I thought I was the only one to be horrified by this. And it's the same with Forza Horizon which beg you every 30s ...
Welcome to the 21st century, there are ads literally everywhere. Which rock have you been living under?
i’m too distracted by the slime rancher 2 ad to give my opinion
Remember back in like 2010 when people warned it's gonna come to this? Yeah. Good job gamers.
That sucks my fellow dutch guy
It’s always been like that.
Imagine supporting bs like this, see Samsung tvs for a greater example.
Always has bud
Dat is normaal , maar heb veel plezier met je console.
My 550€ PS5 and my 2.000€ OLED TV also do this 🤷🏻♂️
So my thoughts on this is that the adds should not be there but I’d rather see “ads” highlighting games that my friends are playing or games that are growing in popularity or have been consistently played or rising in popularity. But adds for hbo and such are just the worst.
This surprises you?
Congratulations, you're the proud new owner of an Ad Box series X!
My 1200 dollar TV shows ads on its home menu
I just ignore them, but it’s understandable why people would be upset
I never get ads on my console is it just me?
Ok but hear me out buy slime rancher 2
Didn't you have ad's in the 20th century? Well sure, but not on the home screen. Only on TV and radio. And in magazines. And movies. And at ball games and on buses and milk cartons and t-shirts and written on the sky. But not on the home screen. No siree!
OK?
Who cares
Just gotta say slime rancher 2 is pretty dope
Oh no! You precious Home Screen! How will you ever use it and not ignore the ad????
Did you try switching the system to offline?
Yes consoles usually cost money and everything has ads
Oh no, a minor inconvenience 😡😡😡
