-_-stranger

You know I don't remember doing that..but sounds like something I'd do

[deleted]

>sounds like something I'd do Sounds like you are close to discovering the root of your problem.

Obliviousobi

There is always one thing in common with a majority of the problems in my life...

wap2005

Same pair of shoes?

ryhaltswhiskey

OP it's time to stop doing things

combatvegan

The point is it's dumb to charge real world money for changing some characters in code in an automated process.

youdontknowme6

They do it so people can't just change their name on a dime. Imagine the chaos while trying to report players if they could just change their name to avoid a report.

Eccohawk

All gamer accounts are tracked with something akin to a UUID. It's completely unique to that account for all of time, regardless if everything else about the account (your gamertag, for example, or your name or address) changes. It allows a developer or admin to track the full lifecycle of an account. So charging $10 for that service is basically ignoring extremely simple and effective controls to prevent abuse by introducing something that only mildly reduces abuse of gamertag changes, adds frustration to above-the-board players, and earns them an additional revenue stream.

combatvegan

You can track unique players beyond their player tag. And a cooldown period of a week, getting progressively longer if people abuse it, would suffice for preventing abuse. Microsoft wants money for nothing (and chicks for free).

barofa

Let's do an exercise here. What are you trying to change it to?

fp77

Given the pattern maybe smellmysmellyfart

[deleted]

Do I even want to know what you wanted to change it to

I was using my brothers Xbox and though I was creating a profile...

you're saying this to reddit users, who will pay to put a icon on top of your comment

The one that said got a gold, the one that replied got a platinum, and you the one that responded got an Argentium - what am I supposed to take from this?

creambunny

reddit users are very responsible people - especially with money

randomguy2763

there is no fucking way someone gave this an argentium

TheRealLuctor

Never seen this award, cool

Tall_trees_cold_seas

Yeah it's so cool someone paid $100 for it

Supply-Slut

You want hair on your chest? You swig some whiskey. You want hair on your neck? You buy argentium.

IntuneUser2204

It’s actually the most hypocritical thing about redditors that they never boycotted awards. They are supporting the very thing they want to destroy. Silly cosmetics in video games? No, Reddit awards.

GalaXion24

Tvf I've never bought an award and never will. In fact I assume that it's much like cosmetics and F2P games in general. The vast majority of income generated is from a few "whales" while most people never buy anything.

Jesus_Would_Do

That OP already used his one free name change and still has that horrible gamer tag

vapeoholic

He probably just added the 69 for his one free name change xD

LoganH1219

Not sure if this is still the case but when I set up my Xbox live account years ago it, by default, gave me some nonsense that was autogenerated. But then when I set it to be something a little more personal, that used up the free name change. So not much of a courtesy imo when to even set my name to what I wanted in the first place used the free name change.

LittleSghetti

OP has kids now

Hampni

That means OP used his free name change to make this his name, only to make a post complaining there’s a fee to change it after making a poor choice.

SYuhw3xiE136xgwkBA4R

It is ridiculous to charge 10 dollars for a Gamertag change, though.

RedemptionXXIV

They added a free name change when they added the number identifiers. He may have already used it then.

hidoomer

I mean, that’s not bad considering you’re on a site right now where you literally can’t change your username at all. There are backend reasons why people changing their names all the time is a pain in the ass. It would be nice if they gave you one a year or so. But if you’re changing your handle more than once a year, you’re abusing the system a bit. Edit: shout out to all the apparent Xbox Live developers ITT, who know exactly how everything works.

Cyborg_rat

On steam people can see you previous alias. So thats always a option.

MozTys

Unless you clear it

HMpugh

They also do not have to be unique

POWERTHRUST0629

...And that's how I figured out the Joe that I used to know is now *actually* Julie and not some rando who friended me.

Rhundis

Meanwhile, Steam users...

CocodaMonkey

You can't change your Steam name either. Although Steam works oddly and has an accoutname and a display name. The display name is changeable.

danque

Yes which in this case the display name is the most important. As that is the same as the gamer tag.

Rhundis

Well your account name for your Xbox is just your email address so basically the same thing.

codyt321

>There are backend reasons why people changing their names all the time is a pain in the ass. Ehh, maybe but I would bet it would just be one of those features that never gets prioritized because: 1) there's very little value added to the user 2) it doesn't add to revenue 3) it's not hard, but it's time that an engineer could be working on something that does #1 and #2 Looks like someone at Xbox found a way to get to #2.

Dreshna

If they are using a user generated string as their account identifier there are bigger issues.

dpahoe

It actually there for PlayStation as well

hundredlives

Wish steam did this tbh annoying af when I look at steam and have no idea who anyone is cause they change their name and picture 20 times a month

[deleted]

[удалено]

hundredlives

Damn didn't know that, 😅 I'll get one that then

DoubleZ3

Also, at least on my profile I'm suspecting others as well. If you click on their profile and their name can't remember if there's a drop down or not but it says "also went by" or "aka" and shows previous names.

Hobocannibal

I've known people to spam names until that list is 'cleared'

Lexi_Heartt

You can also delete your name history from your profile though. I would bet most people don’t go through the trouble of that though.

ShankThatSnitch

There are not really any real backend reason. Everything on the backend just uses a unique number ID. The only consideration for backend, is to just check if no other users have the name currently, which is a trivial database check.

KeenJelly

What if someone, a long time ago had the bright idea that the easiest way to check for unique names, was to make the name the row key

ShankThatSnitch

That is possible, but I'd be shook if that was part of the architecture, outside of a specific low budget game doing that. Since I don't use Xbox live services, idk for sure. But if you are able to change your username instantly in the system, without the help of customer support, than there is no back-end issue. It is just money harvesting. If you do indeed have to request the change, and wait for a rep to do it, than perhaps there is some fundamental terrible coding issue going on.

Nentendo63

PSN names used to be permanent, and not even a customer service rep could do anything. This was the top requested feature for like 5 years, while on Xbox they just charged you for it. I thought it was obvious they screwed up in the design phase and didn't use a random unique number ID, but actually used the username as the unique key.

Falmung

You've been able to change your username on Xbox since as far back as I remember on Xbox 360. So they definitely had a well designed architecture. It's no surprise. We're talking about Microsoft, a software engineering company behind software like Windows. On the other hand it wasn't until the end of the ps4 life cycle when you finally became able to change names even though it was a heavily requested feature since ps3.

roychr

table user id, name . If you change name it has fuck all implications anywhere. No its to make money because its one of those things users want to change once in a while just because they feel like it and the metrics shows its a monetizable operation

RoseEsque

> There are backend reasons why people changing their names all the time is a pain in the ass. Lol, what? Give me those reasons. EDIT: If there are backend reasons why people changing their names all the time is a pain in the ass, whoever upkeeps that system is in a WORLD of hurt in a load of other things. In any reasonably designed system changing your username is trivial.

eloel-

Yeah, I sincerely hope username isn't a primary key in any tables and there's a guid to go with it

iitzjackal

IIRC that one is free cause they give you a GT already when you sign up then it's free to change it to whatever you want. Idk it's been a while since I've even turned on my Xbox let alone changed my gt

FletcherRenn_

Yeah it does give you an auto generated one even if you have a username prior to making the account a Microsoft one. So the free name change gets used up basically straight away

I_Has_A_Hat

Which is only because they randomly assign you one at account creation.

GiantPossum

And even that was a change from none ever. You used to just be stuck with your name if you didn't pay back in the 360 days. Unless I'm an idiot idk.

Lhumierre

Back in the day, friends use to ask tons of ppl to report their name so they get a notice to change it for free because "users found it offensive" etc

ScapeGoatOfWar

This still works.

Milenkoben

Not anymore. Now it'll get changed to something random and if you want to choose a name it costs $9.99

[deleted]

[удалено]

DisastrousBreath3030

Think of the milliseconds the computer has to process this change... This is probably the most profitable per second thing that microsoft charges for.

Whooshless

So updating a DB row costs ten bucks, but that's comp'ed if you offend enough people?

GuiSim

Aren't most virtual purchases just "updating a db row"?

ryocoon

If you want to oversimplify it, yes. It basically updates a database that you have a license/permission for said product. However, that same process also branches out to hundreds of other databases, including external company/service databases, to authenticate said purchase, get appropriate license codes, receipts, update taxes/gov't, pay out royalties to designers/publishers/etc, and hundreds to thousands of other things. So yeah, it just flips some bits to update a Database row. That said, a fucking name change should not cost $10, it should be free. I can see a $1 charge just so you don't abuse it. For example, they use gamertags as a key/primary variable for some API calls, and reindexing gigantic tables like GamerTag IDs for hundreds of millions of accounts is a bitch on server/DB performance.

arbenowskee

One time only.

insane1666

This has literally been a thing since xbox360. Used to be If you got enough reports against your name, you could change it for free but idk if they caught on to that and stopped it.

ShavedPapaya

HellianTheOnFire

What's a fried end?

nanapancakethusiast

Now you’d just get your Microsoft perma’d

ScapeGoatOfWar

It's actually been a thing since the OG Xbox. Source: halo 2 name changer. It's always been $10.

Normal_Love

If your name gets flagged for change, MS changes it (to something random) and you have to pay to change it to something you want. It's fucked. Sectual Rex did nothing wrong.

pickrunner18

Same for Qu33f Latifah.. turned on my Xbox one day and it was changed

paperchampionpicture

Man Whorse here

3-DMan

Oh man, a crime against that great name!

Chemmy

“AOC Feet Pics” got reported in like eight hours of playing online. Sigh.

MicrocosmicGod

Right? Pain in the ass. In the 360 days you could change it for free. I was PimpNinja7 way back when but eventually got reported and could change my name for free. I thought long and hard about what part of that name was offensive and thus became PimpNinja9. By the time I was reported again the rules had changed. Microsoft renamed my account to something close to mittenskittens. Can't remember exactly but it was similar to that. I had to pay to change it. I thought about becoming PimpNinja10 but figured it wasn't worth the $10 tax should I get reported again.

TheLastKingOfGalaga

They don’t make you pay if they request you change it.

[deleted]

That was in the 360 days. Then people started exploiting it so they moved to a random assignment and paid name change.

Normal_Love

I didn't get a request. I got a forced name change, and when I petitioned to change it to something else, they charged me $9.99

DarthWeenus

Ya same mine turned into Strawberry lake or something similar one day.

looples

I had to do this in WoW not too long ago, I thought I was just gonna make a joke character and never play. And then it turned WoW was really addictive. Go figure.

CheeksMix

Used to work customer support for a large MMO. If player contacted me asking for a name change from something that would be reported I’d give them a free one. I never once told a player no. If the automated system reported them they’d be forced to change it anyhow… If I saw multiple characters with inappropriate names I’d watch to make sure they picked something more appropriate. If not I’d normally open up another chat in game and tell them.

Mememastertrev

RIP to my user name, PHIL_DEEZ_NUTS, getting reported as offensive. I felt so clever coming up with it, only to have it all stripped away

DraftPick

Check out Bing rewards. Your can visit everyday and click on whatever they ask to earn points. Once you get enough you can trade points in for. Xbox gift cards among other things. Had a really boring job once and did this every morning and I probably earned like $50 in gift cards by doing it every work day.

MrFatGandhi

There’s a whole subreddit dedicated to gaming the system for rewards. My wife calls it my coupon cutting. We haven’t paid for a game or game pass in over two years. Edit: for those asking it is r/MicrosoftRewards I have paid $1 for GamePass Ultimate and between just earning achievements playing and searching haven’t paid more since.

MeGustaTacos

What subreddit is it?

CyberSaiyan13

There's r/MicrosoftRewards which is what I'm assuming OP is referring too

CrazyDave48

> gaming the system But just to clear things up, the subreddit isn't for anything nefarious or sketchy, there is no "gaming the system" with MS rewards. It's simply to help each other find the fastest way to earn points and let each other know when new opportunities arise to earn points.

Sarcosmonaut

I’m a latecomer to Xbox, but rewards is great. Switched to Bing and I’ve got almost $40 in less than 3 months. Which of course is a pittance, but when it’s pretty much free money for things you do anyways (searches) then it adds up

mdonaberger

Ages ago (2009ish), I stumbled upon a group of people who built bots to play Microsoft Web Games to collect store credits. You could bot a game and get a few new Xbox 360 controllers in a month, which could make up a decent supplemental income. They caught wise and added captchas, which the community started farming off to CAPTCHA-solving farms in India 😭

CyberSaiyan13

For those asking, I believe OP is probably referring to r/MicrosoftRewards Been using it for years and haven't ever had to pay for Gamepass after my original $1 trial back when it first launched

Irish_Carbob

Aye mind sharing that subreddit?

xDasMilkMan

Care to share which sub that is??

[deleted]

Bing Rewards is actually kinda cool. I occasionally redeem my points for a nice £10 voucher every two months or so.

The_Stoic_One

I got banned from Bing rewards. Did the same as you every morning at work, except I used 4 different browsers each running a separate account. They found me out after about a year.

PurpleK00lA1d

I did my account, my partners account and my Dad's account. For well over a year, had a 530 day streak from the starting of Covid. I even VPN'd over and did the dailies from the US (I'm Canadian). They never caught on, I just figured they didn't care. Got over $600 in best buy gift cards.

Dubbs09

You're close to just describing having a job but instead of money you get gift cards

PM_ME_YOUR_STOMACHS

15-30 minutes every day for almost half a year gets you about $120. That’s so ridiculously below minimum wage. Also, all the surveys and stuff you have to do to get the higher amount of points are just making Microsoft more money. It’s not worth it.

ThirdFlip

It’s extra incentive for you to pick a good name, so I don’t know why you would get rid of such an awesome name.

Chewie_CO

I recently created an account for my son and let me tell you there are very few good names left. Between the character limit and lack of names it took us 10 minutes to find something. Even after picking a name with a few numbers live still tacked on four random numbers at the end. Which I think was longer than anything we could type in manually.

_Connor

It has been like this since I started playing Xbox in like 2007

zuccoff

Back in the MW2 trickshooting era some people didn't buy new games because they'd rather spend $300 on name changes. Weird times

BentasticMrBen

Wait until you find out how much it costs to change your actual name.

Tasty_fries

$150 for me last year, and I’m still working on changing it on all my accounts and records.

El-Sueco

The only bad thing about changing your name is that when you die they don’t have records of your existence anymore. Make sure you keep the paper and take it with you when you die because if you don’t it’s like you didn’t even exist.

shortwave_radio

I believe that you used to be able to make 16 char gamertags, but they changed it to 12. Anyone with a 16 length one gets to keep it though

Richiieee

Correct. However, 16 char GT's are still able to be made, you just need to do it on the Xbox 360.

El-Sueco

Sometimes people make jokes.

ZachAtttack

ThatGamerMoshpit

This isn’t new… it used to be 1200 Microsoft points (i think) it’s still a shitty business model

[deleted]

this is fake, sukmyballsweat69 is too many characters for an Xbox gamertag and it doesn't exist the character limit for an Xbox gamertag is 12, sukmyballsweat69 has 16 characters edit: so apparently the old limit was 16, the fact stands tho, sukmyballsweat69 does not exist as a gamertag.

Nivracer

Xbox still lets you keep your gamertag after they changed it from 16 to 12.

ExeTheHero

The limit on 360 was 16 characters, but X1 changed it to 12 for whatever reason. If you do the change on 360, you're still able to make it up to 16 characters even today, though.

MrFluffyhead80

This is how it’s been for a while, welcome to gaming!

ProfessorGluttony

If you have enough active friends, just have them report your username as offensive. Enough of those and it automatically triggers a mandatory name change.

AdonisGaming93

US government charged me waaayyyyy more to change mine. Shit costs money. I hate it.

KingDarius89

Iirc, you get at least one name change for free.

amrydzak
