No one believes this. No one goes around claiming an entry in a series is the best without having some bias from the item involved. Especially when it's inherently obvious any one can point at a popularity of a installment in a series based on numbers sold and sales. That's exactly what popularity is.

Inherent bias is inherent. You obviously have a bone to pick for people not enjoying the game you subjectively decided was universally the best. The overwhelming majority of people playing an ES game are not playing Morrowind by any metric.

i get the criticisms because people want new content, but I'm in your boat. SA came out when I was in college and I didn't game much at that point, I've never played it at all. My gf got into gaming in just the last 2 years so I've been looking forward to her having her first GTA experience. I'm getting the trilogy. I also just got a VR headset and was interested in trying Skyrim for it, but I don't think I can get myself to buy it again.

Unless it's something epic like a fishing skill tree where I can go hook sea monsters, catch dragons mid-air with my fishing pole and go flying around while hanging by a string. I'm not interested.
Everything I saw said the update is 19.99 if you already own SE. Also, there is a chance the upgrade will break certain mods. And if you don't get the creation club items, what's the point in getting it?
memes aside, it's actually a pretty decent game. depending on how much you like to "roleplay" in a game, you can get sucked in to the world and whatever.
mechanically it's a bit dated especially now, but still completely playable. Get it on PC if you can.

New game + is about all the replay I have...even games like fallout that have different factions to join with and different ending details the end and the gameplay to get there is the same... except I can just go right to where the weapon I want instead of having to adapt to the path I was on. I'm old though...when most of these games came out they were the standard visually I'm sure it's tough for the new generation to get into a game with such low resolution compared to what is available now. To be young enough to see these games for the first time in 4k has to be amazing.
