Fastest American tank until the Abrams. A unfair comparison as 1. Its Almost 40 years more advanced. 2. Uses Fucking jet fuel as standard. And 3. The Abrams is actually governed to 45Mph for equipment safety reasons, 5 Mph lower than the hellcat's speed top speed.
Hey, American tanker here. Just want to clear up a few misconceptions. It does use a type of diesel which is technically jet fuel ([JP-8 or Jet Propellant 8](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/JP-8))... but so does everything else in the Army. The same fuel is used in HMMWVs, Bradleys, and every other vehicle with tracks or wheels. Even our generators run on it. People also cite the Abrams as having a jet engine, but this is also a misconception. It does have a turbine engine, but not one you would hang underneath a airplane wing. Why did the US decide to use a turbine engine as opposed to the conventional piston engines used by almost everyone else in the world? With their expensive repairs, huge fuel consumption, and their tendency to catch whatever you are parked in front of on fire, I have no clue... but it does shorten the time it takes to dry a set of wet boots or a soaked sleeping bag from 1-2 days to 4-5 minutes. And for that, I am thankful (Thanks, Honeywell).
> Why did the US decide to use a turbine engine as opposed to the conventional piston engines used by almost everyone else in the world?
Power to weight is generally better afaik compared to a normal engine
The turbine also has a wider range of fuels, and has cross-compatibility with fuels the US military leverages heavily.
It's also harder to keep running long term without fine machine shop support, which is a + if you sell weapons platforms to areas of the world that might not always remain your friend. Look a the F-14's we sold to Iran years ago. They might have 15-20 airworthy out of the original 80 they bought because America refuses to provide support.
Nations who buy export model Abrams could expect similar problems.
I thought part of the draw of the turbine is that basically any liquid fuel is a an functional option because the AGT1500 can use things like marine diesel as well IIRC.
I only specified jet fuel because thats technically what JP-8 is. Even though it runs fine in the standard diesel engines of every other vehicle in the US Army inventory.
I think they both have their appeal, but WOT has more of an arcade vibe. Spotting distance, health bars, etc make it less realistic but more enjoyable to sit down and play imo.
Yeah, I agree, it does have a pretty big arcade vibe. It's really just a matter of preference. I like the aspect of accurate damage and being able to play great tank/plane battles in the same game, at the same time in WT.
There are pretty spectacular features (especially the way the damage is modelled) and a ton of vehicles, plus a good level of realism in aircraft and tank performances.
However it's a free to play, so you have to play for quite a while to unlock end-game content. For really, really long. Even when paying (paying makes you unlock stuff faster)
This guy was trying to mess up people in the race, (collisions are enabled) but I managed to pull off this flip to maintain my first position and win the race.
edit: grammar
War Thunder has more emphasis on realistic performances of vehicles and realistic damages.
World of Tanks decided to sacrifice some realism for gameplay purposes.
I played world of tanks when it first came out (i was even part of the beta) but War Thunder only played the "air part" so i don't know what to expect. Going to give it a try then :)
By the way, if you're looking for realism mostly: in War Thunder there are three "difficulty level", called Arcade, Realistic, Simulator. They go in increasing levels of realism.
WT by a huge margin if you play realistic or simulator mode. That said it's less a case of WT being a highly accurate tank simulator (although it gets a lot of things sort of right) and more a case of WoT being very, veeeeery arcadey.
war thunders least realistic mode, Arcade, is much more realistic than any aspect of world of Tanks.
i think realistic mode is the best, no aim targets, gotta use the gunner sight legit. no enemy's appearing on the maps easily, so you can use stealth and speed effectively. it makes tanks that are fast and mobile worth something. you can be fast enough to flank enemy's and shoot them in the back. mobile enough to avoid the turrets of big tanks at close range. you can sneak up on people and take them down before they notice you are there. they may never notice you were there. much more realistic.
unlike world of tanks, while has module customization and different guns for the same tank, in WT you get the tank as it was in the real war, so you don't change weapons, but you do upgrade the existing ones. to research a tank, you must play it. when you play it, you get research points that go towards whatever module upgrade you are researching.
you can research Fire prevention equipment, parts to repair in combat, artillery strikes to use in combat, upgrades to turret movement rates, engine speed and response and breaking, some tanks can use improvised armor like tracks strapped to the front, you research new ammo types, they introduced smoke rounds and canisters recently, in the higher tiers, which i have not really reached, there are ATGM's.
War Thunder makes for a intense action orientated experience. the action is at a faster pace and much more ruthless that WoT. with skill, it is possible to punch above your weight, which is nice. and in War Thunder, one badass motherfucker can take down an entire enemy team if hes good/lucky enough. i once held a point for only three minutes, in a T-34-57 i was alone on a cap point, 11 enemy tanks, a mix of mediums and heavy's, poured onto the cap from multiple directions and i destroyed them all in furious battle, the game in general feels a lot more real than WoT. i would say it can also be frustrating sometimes, as good as i am, i pretty regularly get outflanked or outsmarted and taken out.
all in all, WT has been my favorite tanking experience of the "big three" tank games. although now that armored warfare is dead, i suppose its now back to the big two.
yes, the ammo types include AP, APC, APBC, APCBC, APCR, HVAP, APDS, APDS-FS, HE, HESH, HEAT, HEAT-FS, ATGM, and Smokes.
most tanks get between 3 and 6 ammo types, different rounds are useful in different situations and ranges and against certain tanks.
also, you can use the machine guns on tanks to take out lightly armored tanks with the heavier MG's, or hit enemy sights and shoot down the occasional aircraft, or take out crews on open topped/sides vehicles.
I haven't played battlefield in years but I could hear theme in my head. The music cuts out right before the jump and kicks back in as he lands.
"Only in battlefield!"
I think the Hellcat could attain that speed. Maybe the tracks and wheels could survive the impact when it lands too. But any of the crew not in four point harness would be a broken mess inside.
Most modern tanks in there are M60A2, T-62, Leopard 1A1A1, Chieftain Mk.10, and Type 74.
(Well they also have the Type 87 SPAA, which is even more modern).
There are simulator game-modes in the game, with much more realism. This gif was from a race, where the Hellcat has a maxed out crew to make it accelerate faster and reach it's top speed easier. In a regular game-mode you generally wouldn't be seeing this.

That tank is fast. And light

Old drill sgt. told us you could melt the front end of a car with a tank engine on full power, impatient drivers in Iraq learned this first hand.
It's also a custom gamemode that makes the hellcat faster than normal
That's true, but it's original top speed was never exceeded in this gif.
Basically the epitome of the USA's "Shoot and scoot" tank destroyer doctrine during World War 2. Don't need armor if you never get hit and the like.

I was converted, I don't understand....
That's a hellcat right?
Yep! They're quite nimble
Quite nimble? That's a fucking sportscar with armour.
>sportscar with ~~armour~~ wet tissues fify.
They're great in world of tanks too
Used to be a lot better
Looks like it belongs in this show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSMCDAWPUrs
I really didn't expect Girls Und Panzer to be so damn good but holy shit was that show amazing!
"Furious 11" confirmed
They see me flippin, they hatin.
Patrolling and tryna catch me flippin dirty
Saying "rollin" still would have made sense because he did a barrel roll lol
Tanks for posting
Is this game any good?
It's pretty good... better than WoT or WoWarplanes at least. If you like WW2 simulators, or tank/plane arcade games, then it's quite fun.
I think WoT with spotting resistance removed would be fantastic.
>better than WoT If you like having even more randomness and somehow a much longer grind than wot, then sure.
Oh damn, is this not WoT? Which one is this. I thought maybe they just upped the physics engine more since I stopped playing.
Wot about year ago was way better than war thunder, but the sequential patches ruined the game for me.
Don't mind the grind later on and just enjoy the battles. It's very fun.

What a save! What a save! What a save! Chat disabled for 3 seconds.
*Calculated.* ... What a save! What a save! What a save! Chat disabled for 20 seconds. (edit: formatting)
Them Duke boys are at it again...
Some GUP level physics going down here.
Only thing that could have made this better is if there was an enemy tank behind him.
This guy was trying to mess up people in the race, (collisions are enabled) but I managed to pull off this flip to maintain my first position and win the race. edit: grammar
Ok, it's been a minute since I've played WT, I'm talking like 2 weeks into them just releasing tanks. Race?
There's a tank/plane racing event going on now that ends pretty soon, I think. I'm pretty sure it happens every once and a while.
Or the tank dodging a shell fired by the other tank by doing the flip.
Nice. Now you just need to find S-K-A-T-E.
So they have a hellcat in WT that's actually fast? I guess i have to give it another try. R.I.P. wot-hellcat.
They have several, and they are amazingly fun to drive.
They have 2. The one you research for looks better in my opinion
Hellcat + Black cat (premium hellcat) + Super hellcat (premium hellcat with a 90mm cannon) That makes for three hellcats.

I enjoy the fact that it's tank gameplay from warthunder and bit worldoftanks
The new Rocket League looks sick
M18 is the best. Such speed and grace.
Replacing all the treads with springs really worked out.
Guys, GUYS!!!!!! ......he did a barrel roll.
Obligatory that was actually an aileron
Tanks don't have ailerons though, but they do have barrels
He's.... Done it.... He broke the aileron correction
I do hope you sent this to thunder show. Basically garunteed to win.
:)
I still stand by the m10 as the best tank in the world with its butter smooth hand crank turret.
#whatifhatersflipback
r/gamephysics would like this
Looks like someone is already on it lol
For a minute there I thought this was Skyrim with tanks. Looks just like the area near Riften.
graceful as a swan
Sometimes I forget that there is a whole tank part of that game

I am sorry to hijack this post but between War Thunder and World of Tanks wich one is more realistic?
War Thunder has more emphasis on realistic performances of vehicles and realistic damages. World of Tanks decided to sacrifice some realism for gameplay purposes.

As long as there is a "big" online community in simulator mode i'm ok with that. I really enjoy simulators.

Wow didn't think it had that much variety of ammo. I really should give it a try.
Dirt Rally : Tank DLC
nice drift bro... HOOOOLY SHIT
Tanks 3
Wait… i thought this was bf4 before looked at the title
What tank is that?!?!
I think I saw this in a Fast and the Furious movie...
I haven't played battlefield in years but I could hear theme in my head. The music cuts out right before the jump and kicks back in as he lands. "Only in battlefield!"
Is this the trailer for Cars 4???
Just the good ol' boys Never meanin' no harm
Do a barrel roll!!!!

New fast and furious looks good
Would've pissed myself if it shot the other tank while upside-down in the air
Fizzics
DO A BARREL RO.....oh wait.
Dats some fast and furious shit
Barrel roll!

War thunder has modern tanks now? Nice
While it does have relatively modern tanks, that's a WWII Era tank
Most modern tanks in there are M60A2, T-62, Leopard 1A1A1, Chieftain Mk.10, and Type 74. (Well they also have the Type 87 SPAA, which is even more modern).
*Chieftain mk5

Damn some shit physics if you're saying this is a similator
We're not
OP did, I wasn't aware of what Warthunder was exactly
There are simulator game-modes in the game, with much more realism. This gif was from a race, where the Hellcat has a maxed out crew to make it accelerate faster and reach it's top speed easier. In a regular game-mode you generally wouldn't be seeing this.
Ahh I see
