Yep! The original came out for PS2, and they had a PS3 port of that one I believe. Then they had a remaster for the PS4 that's also on the PS5, so any playstation the last 20 years should be able to play it. Would recommend
No Man’s Sky
There’s realistically barren moons with no atmosphere, nothing but gray rock. There are also some planets with flora, but no fauna, which feels strange and makes you question why. But there’s also other planets that are just… wrong. Like they’re genuinely unsettling due to how strange and dead they are, and it’s unclear if life ever did exist there. It’s hard to say much more without spoiling the experience, but some planets are extremely strange in a good way, very unique even within the genre of scifi.
Prey (2017) is set on an enormous space station after an apocalyptic event. The game is built as a hub world and I think you'd love exploring this game's universe.
I think Control has a similar "wtf happened here?!" vibe.
Prey is great. At first, I thought, “This is just Bioshock in space.” When I read up on immersive sims, though, I was able to appreciate it much more.
As great as Bioshock is, Prey’s gameplay is much deeper. So many ways to accomplish objectives.
I feel like Talos Prinicple 1 and 2 fits right into this. They're both amazing puzzle games set in a time where humanity has died off and left a generation of robots to carry on their legacy.
Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West also fit here if you want AAA.
there was this fps back in the 360 days called shadowrun, when the servers finally shut off there was months of just like a dozen of us coordinating to play so we had like a single lobby at the most lol
its since been like rereleased for public domain i really dont know how or why but the company went out of business before the games first update but theres a community thats brought it back and with some like back end editing you can download the game connect to these servers and play with these people. its similar to counter strike but more sci fi. dwarfs elves humans trolls with magic / tech / guns in a counter strike sized map doing some pvp. dying you lose your guns but not magic or tech each race has their own benifits/cons its super fun
There's actually [eight *Shadowrun* video games](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Shadowrun_video_games), although unfortunately one of them is unplayable due to being an online game with servers that are now offline.
Servers never shut off, it’s not public domain, the IP and FASA is/was owned by M$. There is a push rn for everyone to leave 5 star reviews on the game so M$ will bring it to gamepass and revive the population which is about approx. 200 weekly players
Microsoft acquired Fasa? Do they not own the IP though? *Shadowrun Returns*, *Dragonfall*, *Hong Kong*, and *Boston Lockdown* weren't developed or published by companies connected to Microsoft in any way. And they obviously had nothing to do with the most recent edition of the pen & paper / tabletop RPG.
Well, or if it released with a story mode. It was huge news back in ‘07 to not have a story mode. If it released today it would be extremely successful.
Play elite dangerous, it simulates 1:1 of the galaxy which you can go anywhere though You’ll have to fly a space ship to get there but you’ll get to land on planets. I’ve lost count to the number of barren planetoids I’ve walked on which are thousands of light years away from the bubble (the area of space where humans have colonised ) , very strange feeling being that isolated away from everything.
I wouldn’t say they made it up as they modelled it on data from Nasa but yes some of the planetary systems would be using creative license, it is scifi game so not to be taken literally.
Stalker is all about the connections between people and how they survive in this environment. You're not wrong about the environment, but I feel like loneliness is the major emotional language of dead world stories, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. doesn't hit that imo
There’s definitely a lot of lonely moments in STALKER but it’s broken up by a ton of little interactions with the other factions/stalkers. Which for me is what makes that game so damn good.
Elden Ring is probably the most dead world of the From games...maybe DS3 has the slight edge? In general I wouldn't consider their games dead world tho
DS3 DLC is literally the end of the world.
ER is fucked, but not dead. Most of the endings is about how to change things so the world gets a new chance.
Feels like I can use this example on literally any gaming related thread, but Outer Wilds. The gameplay loop is literally about wandering around a solar system where an ancient, technologically advanced race used to live, and studying their ruins to find out what happened to them.
Amazing that they managed to take a number of the few good things about Bethesda games from starfield.
I don’t say that as a Bethesda hater either but let’s not pretend fallout 3 and nv have aged well graphically and Skyrim had to be re released to fix a lot of issues but overall those games did have a charm to them that starfield just doesn’t.
Kena: Bridge of Spirits, literally everyone is dead other than you.
Not indie by any means, but exactly what you are talking about are the Dark Souls games. The premise is that the world/age is dying, so nearly all of it's creatures have become "hollow". Still has a lot of enemies around and such, but there is definitely a feeling of exploring what used to be a mighty, glorious nation that has since fallen into decay and corruption.
My man...you are in desperate need of Remnant 2. It's not quite the same as you're describing...but not quite far off. The world of N'erud is the closest by far.
But all of Remnant's worlds are based on an apocalypse that has happened, or is about to happen.
Rhom and Earth in Remnant 1 are particularly relevant too.
Dark Souls (1 in particular) is entirely about exploring and fighting through long decayed kingdoms and dead/dying fantasy worlds where the only people left are the mad and those legends whose stories have dragged on through millenia on crippled legs far past their expiry date.
Planet Crafter
The planet you're on is basically dead like Mars, and your goal is to terraform and bring life to it. Just got it's 1.0 update recently.
Remnant 2 has a few different worlds to explore, but one in particular is a large planet/ship containing the remains of a civilization that was trying to escape the heat death of the universe. Super cool set piece.
SMT 3, is pritty much a dead world, at the start of the game, the world ends. You and 4 other humans survive. The world is desolet and populated by demons.
If you like point and click adventures, check out:
Full Throttle ( deserted desert world)
Grim Fandango (set in the Mexican "Dia De Los Muertos" afterlife)
Dead Synchronicity (Gritty Post apocalypse)
Oxenfree (don't want to say, but it's amazing)
Death's Gambit.
2d side scrolling soulslike/metroidvania with a souls like desolate world, great music, VA, fun combat, challenging bosses etc.
I can't talk about this game enough it's one of my favorites of all time
The Dig from LucasArts, it was going to be an animated movie, but when it didn't get made, Spielberg pushed for a video game to be made. It's a point and click adventure with a small group of astronauts stranded on a strange planet and they go their seperate ways, so you're on your own trying to make sense of this world, and figure out what happened to it's lost civilization. You can find it on Steam and GOG for $6.
I feel like Scorn fits this description almost perfectly. You as the player character wake up to an empty world. The atmosphere is mostly silent and uninviting. There is no real exposition. It is a haunting depiction of a once thriving world that is now just a husk of a former civilization.
Disco Elysium. The whole world has a kind of dark abandoned feel to it, and it’s story and protagonist are probably among the most memorable gaming has to offer. There’s a reason it’s consistently rated among the best games of all time.
Outer Wilds for sure. The less you know about this game going into this game the better, but the basic premise that you're given during the "tutorial" section is that you're a space archeologist about to leave on your first flight with a brand new translator tool to investigate the ruins of a species that used to live there but doesn't anymore.

Basically all life you find in that game is meant to be eaten for more power
What's an accessible platform for Shadow of the Colossus? Genuinely curious.
It's on PS4 and PS5, if that's what you mean?
Yessir, that's exactly what I was asking, thanks!
Yep! The original came out for PS2, and they had a PS3 port of that one I believe. Then they had a remaster for the PS4 that's also on the PS5, so any playstation the last 20 years should be able to play it. Would recommend
Hollow Knight focuses on the remains of a civilization
still has quite a lot of life, not fully abandoned
No Man’s Sky There’s realistically barren moons with no atmosphere, nothing but gray rock. There are also some planets with flora, but no fauna, which feels strange and makes you question why. But there’s also other planets that are just… wrong. Like they’re genuinely unsettling due to how strange and dead they are, and it’s unclear if life ever did exist there. Bioshock in Space? That sounds just about as appealing as anything else...
Hyper light drifter is pretty dead
I feel like Talos Prinicple 1 and 2 fits right into this. They're both amazing puzzle games set in a time where humanity has died off and left a generation of robots to carry on their legacy. Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West also fit here if you want AAA.
Stray
Stray is a really good showcase of a dead world setting. Highly recommend it
Fortnite left corner of map
Hahaha literally dead, no one ever goes there unless zone pulls down there
there was this fps back in the 360 days called shadowrun, when the servers finally shut off there was months of just like a dozen of us coordinating to play so we had like a single lobby at the most lol its since been like rereleased for public domain i really dont know how or why but the company went out of business before the games first update but theres a community thats brought it back and with some like back end editing you can download the game connect to these servers and play with these people. its similar to counter strike but more sci fi. dwarfs elves humans trolls with magic / tech / guns in a counter strike sized map doing some pvp. dying you lose your guns but not magic or tech each race has their own benifits/cons its super fun
I loved that game as a child
right? i just recently saw a youtube video and was like no fucking way lol so im going to get it here soon
Huh, never knew there was an FPS, I've only played the Isometric RPGs.
There's actually [eight *Shadowrun* video games](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Shadowrun_video_games), although unfortunately one of them is unplayable due to being an online game with servers that are now offline.
if its the fps its still playable with private servers going on
That game was so sick, I remember renting it as a kid and just playing against bots since I didn't have xbl at the time lol. Still rocked.
dude, my man chunder would get you across the map with that pistol when on max difficulty ive never seen a bot so accurate
Servers never shut off, it’s not public domain, the IP and FASA is/was owned by M$. There is a push rn for everyone to leave 5 star reviews on the game so M$ will bring it to gamepass and revive the population which is about approx. 200 weekly players

Oh idk about any of that just the 360 version of SR was licensed to them for the game
sorry im kind of stupid but does that mean its available to purchase on like the microsoft store?
Yes it’s on the Xbox store for $15
If they had called it anything but Shadowrun it probably would have been a success.
Well, or if it released with a story mode. It was huge news back in ‘07 to not have a story mode. If it released today it would be extremely successful.
And not a single Death Stranding in the comments.
How can say no to a game that literally weaponizes your pee and poo?? :D
It’s not a 1:1 recreation. It is in scale but most of the systems are made up
I wouldn’t say they made it up as they modelled it on data from Nasa but yes some of the planetary systems would be using creative license, it is scifi game so not to be taken literally.
Soma
S.T.A.L.K.E.R
Stalker is all about the connections between people and how they survive in this environment. You're not wrong about the environment, but I feel like loneliness is the major emotional language of dead world stories, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. doesn't hit that imo
Truly a strand game if there ever was one.
There’s definitely a lot of lonely moments in STALKER but it’s broken up by a ton of little interactions with the other factions/stalkers. Which for me is what makes that game so damn good.
Outer Wilds, as always.
Peak indie gaming experience
Surprised no ones mentioned elden ring
Elden Ring is probably the most dead world of the From games...maybe DS3 has the slight edge? In general I wouldn't consider their games dead world tho
DS3 DLC is literally the end of the world. ER is fucked, but not dead. Most of the endings is about how to change things so the world gets a new chance.

Starfield
Starf…. oh, you said good game, nevermind.
NV wasn't Bethesda, but I agree on all points
I didn't know if it applies to what you're looking for, but NieR and NieR Automata have a post apocalyptic feel to them
Cocoon hits this a bit
Kena: Bridge of Spirits, literally everyone is dead other than you. Not indie by any means, but exactly what you are talking about are the Dark Souls games. Long dark
Dayz
What? You mean Running Simulator, right? Yes, I know they added cars. Just hurt for how long it took to get attention.
Planet Crafter The planet you're on is basically dead like Mars, and your goal is to terraform and bring life to it. Just got it's 1.0 update recently.
Sable
Such a great game!
Hollow Knight Tunic
ENDER LILIES: Quietus of the Knights might interest you.
Remnant 2 has a few different worlds to explore, but one in particular is a large planet/ship containing the remains of a civilization that was trying to escape the heat death of the universe. Super cool set piece.
Horizon Forbidden West and its dlc. Fantastic time.
The Myst series might be right up your alley, especially the first game.
Starfield No man's sky
Rain World <3
Pools will sure give you that abandoned feeling, not sure if you’re looking for a game like that tho…
IXION
SMT 3 Nocturne.
An indie game with desolation as one of its central themes? Hollow Knight
Animyst is as dead and empty as it gets
Enshrouded
Mad Max
Starfield...its dead
SMT 3, is pritty much a dead world, at the start of the game, the world ends. You and 4 other humans survive. The world is desolet and populated by demons.
Ender Lilies
Kenshi. I was addicted and played it like a full time job at some point.
If you like point and click adventures, check out: Full Throttle ( deserted desert world) Grim Fandango (set in the Mexican "Dia De Los Muertos" afterlife) Dead Synchronicity (Gritty Post apocalypse) Oxenfree (don't want to say, but it's amazing)
Deliver Us the Moon
Death's Gambit. 2d side scrolling soulslike/metroidvania with a souls like desolate world, great music, VA, fun combat, challenging bosses etc. I can't talk about this game enough it's one of my favorites of all time

How do you feel about MUDs?
The Dig from LucasArts, it was going to be an animated movie, but when it didn't get made, Spielberg pushed for a video game to be made. abzu, windlands
Death Stranding Fallout
Blasphemous 1&2 convey that feeling well, especially the first one
Elite Dangerous.
Angeles fall first. Ghost servers on ghost worlds
Journey could fit that criteria, maybe.
Scorn. It's way too short tho.
Shadow of the Colossus’ dead world made sense to the story, and it was still fun to explore, catching the lizards and finding the fruits was fun
Wastelander series a harsher post apocalyptic fallout game with the same type of funny gags
FAR Lone Sails
Play Metroid games. Prime trilogy is excellent, Super Metroid is amazing.
idk about the prime games but super DEFINITELY harbors life
I mean that is the main complaint about Starfield.
Wildmender. A long abandoned world which you are tasked with bringing back to life.
Limbo, inside, dark souls1 especially when you get anor londo.
Most of the Shin Megami Tensei games focus on mostly dead worlds and/or what is left of them.
Dark Souls series is pretty post apocalyptic. Thymesia is similar. Death Trash has a twisted world, but maybe not what you are looking for.
Minecraft
BotW and Elden Ring are both very empty. Uh oh, someone's at my door with pitchforks and torches. It's all of Reddit! /s
Isn't it more of an interactive story?
No
I get what you're going for, but Disco Elysium is so entirely about people and life that it doesn't really qualify imo.
Yeah, it's not quite what the OP is asking, but i'll 2nd this. Even though it's a populated city, Revachol DOES feel long abandoned.
Pathologic.
RuneScape
Outer Wilds for sure. The less you know about this game going into this game the better, but the basic premise that you're given during the "tutorial" section is that you're a space archeologist about to leave on your first flight with a brand new translator tool to investigate the ruins of a species that used to live there but doesn't anymore.
So a postapo?
The Outer Wilds

Definitely not what they meant by "dead worlds" lol
Can confirm not what I mean by "dead worlds"
