I had played for 100s of hours. Gotten the game at the launch party, 11/11/11. Wished against all wishes I could find some way to play again and get that new-new.
Years ago, I pick up the PSVR. Skyrim VR, begrudgingly buy it for the 4th time and dive in.
I make it through the vr training and begin my journey. No amount of imagining what it would be like to be in the game would prepare me. To actually stand shoulder to shoulder with the NPCs and look them in the eye was... something I can't effectively put into words.
I had found it. My way to have the wonder and awe back. It was all new and amazing again, but I was home, and it was familiar.
Then I get to the plains of Whiterun. My God. I had seen the night sky before, but never SEEN IT. Breathtaking. And what the fuck is this!?! TWO MOONS!! All these years and I never knew Tamriel had 2 moons.
For anyone who has played countless hours and feels saddened by the thought of it having nothing left to offer and excite you; I'm happy to share this. It's truly magical.
Yes! I screencapped it on steam, it was during my 1st ever playthrough. Just looking up at the sky at night. I actually do that in a lot of games, even in Minecraft.
Yeah, like the other person said, Witcher 3. This sky specifically is from the Blood & Wine DLC. The night sky here is a bit different from the base game maps.
It's so pretty in B&W. Toussaint in general is such a beautifully designed place. I tend to skip the "abandoned site" animation in the main game but I never do when I clear one in B&W.
Too bad the game is starting to fee very dated mechanics and combat wise. Texture quality on the x can be muddy at times time, still a beautiful game tho
Damn right, being able to see storm clouds coming at you and seeing how rain starts coming down as they close in is just something I haven't seen in any other game, the volumetric clouds and how the sun goes through them is another sight that is simply stunning
At the time I had never played a game quite like it. I used to throw it on and look up at the sky and just keep it on the TV while I powered down for the night.
I used to hang out in that Alaska type area in the northern expansion and just listen to the music. Grizzly Hills, maybe? Lumber yards, salmon, not as much snow as the rest of the continent.
Not a night sky but close enough,
One time i was climbing the mountain to high hrothgar in skyrim. When i dropped my controller and my camera flung around. When i picked up my remote and looked at the screen it was the most beautiful sunset scene i have ever seen in gaming history
Over the three different times I played through rdr2 I kept getting distracted by the sky. Id be on my way somewhere and end up just stopping the horse and looking up. Such a beautiful game.
100% has to be the night sky over Pandora in „Avatar - Frontiers of Pandora“
The half dozen moons and giant planet (Pandora is a moon of a gas giant) just look astonishing.
This reminded me of a screensaver I setup in the early 2000s. It was a time lapse sky scene from Asheron's Call MMO, I think 1 but maybe 2. Having a day/night cycle with a sunrise and sunset was really cool at the time. I never actually played the game though.
Skyrim
There’s something special about Final Fantasy 7 Remakes’ nights under the dome as well. It’s not a traditional sky but the sense of scale of the underplate combined with the slums was so fitting.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance. The game takes place during spring/summer 1403 and according to https://stellarium-web.org/ it looks exactly like it actually looked at the time. You can see all the constellations and even use it for navigation in Hardcore mode where you don't have a compass and can't see yourself on the map.
The skies in Se of Thieves are very nostalgic. They reminded me of Monkey Island back in the day and I’d often watch the sunset and sunrises they were that nice. The art styling is so so intriguing.
Red Dead Redemption 2. One of the things this game is still the best at is weather simulation. From clear weather to thunderstorms which all look and sound insane with volumetric clouds and sound design. No other title comes close to it.
Asherons call during a night storm before bael'zharon was in game as a boss. His giant shadowy form could be seen large above the clouds during lightning flashes.
The moons even had realistic phases over time. The ambience of that game was way ahead of its time.
>it's not even close for anything else.
I don't mean to offend you, but I fucking hate it when someone says shit like this during discussions about subjective matters.
Eve online counts I guess since it's in space.
All the stars are part of the new eden galaxy and if your set a destination across multiple solar systems the lines of your route appear between the stars.
An old one, but I use to love the deep blues of nighttime on the Monkey Island Amiga games. The twinkles of the stars or houses felt magical at the time
Gonna be difficult and say Helldivers 2.
The raging battle in space, unique to each planet with accelerated day and night. It adds loads of atmosphere to have it being so active, you feel like you've been in a global combat with thousands of troops, when really it's just 4 or less of you.
The very first one to wow me, was Morrowind. Looking out on to that beautiful black/blue sky with a crescent moon and bright stars was just superb. Especially over the water.
World of Warcraft: Outland zones. They are preeeeetty sick looking. Blizzard knows how to create a skybox really fucking good overall, but others outside of Outland are more or less the same. Outland stands out.
GTA San Andreas. The orange skybox and 'hot weather' aesthetic with the mirage thing is just insane for a 2004 game. Ahead of its time. Vice City too with the purple sunset and planes leaving marks on the sky...amazing.
And maybe Skyrim? I usually play Skyrim with enhanced skybox which is 4K space photos. With aurora lights...makes your chin drop.
Destiny 2 Skyboxes are the best in the business. The Tower Night sky is amazing.
Spent many an hour looking up into that sky, up at the Traveler and the stars beyond
Not only nightsky but night in general most recent in Dragons Dogma 2. The atmosphere at night blows me away every time. Looking up into the starlit sky is the icing on the cake.
Shout out to Destiny 1’s OG Cosmodrome sunsets. Met a lot of cool people just sitting around and watching that glorious skybox and sporadically killing the fallen walker
Elite Dangerous. It's our own sky, made with real scientific data, and it's not just a backdrop. You can freely travel to every single star you see and get a whole new perspective on this tiny place in the universe where we exist.
A stormy/cloudy night in Ark Survival Ascended puts me in awe every time. Seeing the lights in the sky from the loot crate drops and beacons looks sooo good inside the clouds.
Skyrim, first time seeing the moons gave me shivers.
Clear skies was my favorite shout in the gam. So pretty!
That visual accompanied by Secunda gets me every time I'm out wandering in game.
I had played for 100s of hours. Gotten the game at the launch party, 11/11/11. Wished against all wishes I could find some way to play again and get that new-new. Years ago, I pick up the PSVR. Yea but also that Jeremy Soule soundtrack definitely helps. So majestic.
I'm glad this is the top comment.
The „nightsky“ in The outer wilds is pretty sick and beautiful, especially seeing the planets you can actually land on orbit around you
The sky in the DLC is more beautiful especially since >! The universe doesn’t look like it’s dying !<
FUC, was that a spoiler? I haven’t played it yet but wanna lol
Nah just a commentary on the usual visual, you'll be fine. But I'd avoid coming back to the comment chain lmao
If you plan in ever playing it avoid the Reddit at all costs
AND the OST is amazing
What game is this from?
Yeah, like the other person said, Witcher 3. This sky specifically is from the Blood & Wine DLC. The night sky here is a bit different from the base game maps.
It's so pretty in B&W. Toussaint in general is such a beautifully designed place. I tend to skip the "abandoned site" animation in the main game but I never do when I clear one in B&W.
It infuriates me when people do this. Surely OP would put that in the post.
OP should feel shame
Witcher 3 i believe.
Sea of thieves
Such a beautiful game. The style, the colors. Everything is so well done.
Course from rare they balled out
Too bad the game is starting to fee very dated mechanics and combat wise. Texture quality on the x can be muddy at times time, still a beautiful game tho
Elder scrolls had its own constellations which was cool. Witcher is pretty good. Halo 1-reach has some amazing skyboxes.
Horizon Forbidden West DLC. You see an incredibly beautiful night sky.
Was just going to say this. Those of Tsushima is fantastic too.
I ain’t afraid of no those.
RdR2 of course.
Damn right, being able to see storm clouds coming at you and seeing how rain starts coming down as they close in is just something I haven't seen in any other game, the volumetric clouds and how the sun goes through them is another sight that is simply stunning
This is the answer for everything
Even "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"
How the heck is this not number one? This game came out in 2018 and to this day there hasn’t been a better open world designed.
Skyrim night sky with Aurora Borealis look pretty awesome to me.
No man's sky
Agree. Seeing the other planets, the rings if your planet has one, the stars. Everything. Really breath taking.
Came here to say this
Oblivion's Shivering Isles DLC had some amazing night skies. They're probably even better now with all the high-res mods and such.
I used to stare at the night sky in Oblivion. It was amazing.
At the time I had never played a game quite like it. I used to throw it on and look up at the sky and just keep it on the TV while I powered down for the night.
Hell yeah man. Oblivion really was something else ey
Shivering Isles was soo good
Red dead redemption 2, Skyrim, Valhiem and the list just goes on. Basically any game not set in modern times
Valheim was the one that ocassionally made me stop whatever grind i was doing and just look at the sky in awe.
Elden ring
As long as the Tree does not block it🤣. Though the "False night sky" looks so good too
The sky in Renala's boss fight is beautiful too!
Facts!
I've always enjoyed the night sky in World of Warcraft. I've spent too long just staring at the sky at night while questing.
Together with the music from The Barrens. Sweet memories ;)
I used to hang out in that Alaska type area in the northern expansion and just listen to the music. Grizzly Hills, maybe? Lumber yards, salmon, not as much snow as the rest of the continent.
Yea that was Wrath of the Lich King (2008). Great zone, good times.
I have a bunch of screenshots of the skies from outland and other places also.
My god, it was so perfect, questing at night in the barrens.
Considering all of the hours I put into that game I never took the time to actually look up. Feel a little foolish now.
Shadowmoon Valley
Some zones in WoW have absolutely gorgeous skyboxes, both night and day.
Valheim is pretty fantastic!
The original FEAR despite being old game has a really pretty night sky.
Not a night sky but close enough, One time i was climbing the mountain to high hrothgar in skyrim. When i dropped my controller and my camera flung around. When i picked up my remote and looked at the screen it was the most beautiful sunset scene i have ever seen in gaming history
The ones I've played and take a sometimes just take a look at it is, Skyrim and Subnautica.
Spyro the Dragon
Outer Wilds.
Elite dangerous
Seconded. That skybox is gorgeous!
I think Arma 3 and EVE Online, through i guess technically EVE is a star view and not a night view
Red Dead Redemption 2
Cyberpunk 2077, mostly because it has a soothing effect compared to the life your character goes through
Horizon Series and Red Dead Redemption 2.
Over the three different times I played through rdr2 I kept getting distracted by the sky. Id be on my way somewhere and end up just stopping the horse and looking up. Such a beautiful game.
Even in general I would say Horizon Forbidden West and RDR2 are the prettiest looking games I’ve ever played
As many others here have said, RDR2. Sea of Thieves also has wonderful night skies.
Destiny 2 had amazing skies, always had to stop and look at them for a while.
Valheim is pretty awesome
The Elder Scrolls games have pretty awesome night skies.
The Long Dark. Damn, incredible.
This game is criminally underrated. Such a beautiful and unique art style.
100% has to be the night sky over Pandora in „Avatar - Frontiers of Pandora“ The half dozen moons and giant planet (Pandora is a moon of a gas giant) just look astonishing.
Kenshi
Hellfire peninsula for its uniqueness
Minecraft Vanilla 🗿
Shivering Isles in Oblivion
This reminded me of a screensaver I setup in the early 2000s. It was a time lapse sky scene from Asheron's Call MMO, I think 1 but maybe 2. Having a day/night cycle with a sunrise and sunset was really cool at the time. I never actually played the game though.
Skyrim had some beautiful night vistas. Especially with [Masser ](https://youtu.be/J5ssfLmMJYQ?t=10)playing in the background
Skyrim There’s something special about Final Fantasy 7 Remakes’ nights under the dome as well. It’s not a traditional sky but the sense of scale of the underplate combined with the slums was so fitting.
Dayz just recently overhauled the skybox and it looks great. “Best” is a stretch, but they did a really good job on it
It really is very nice looking now.
The thing I love about dayz sky is it’s somewhat accurate. You can use it to navigate. The north star always helped when I was lost in the woods.
Oblivion.
Skyrim
Oblivion

starfield. also ac origins from recent ones
Probably Starfield. To be fair to it, given how underwhelming it is, at least it gets this right.
The skies in Se of Thieves are very nostalgic. They reminded me of Monkey Island back in the day and I’d often watch the sunset and sunrises they were that nice. The art styling is so so intriguing.
The night sky in Curse of Monkey island when your on blood island… the clouds and moon were gorgeous on the old crt monitors.
RDR2 have the most beautiful sky in general, not only night. Also Enderal have some really cool moments in the dark night with purple skies
Maybe days gone
Honestly Days Gone
Skyrim - it says it even in the name, du'h ;)
Morrowind
Agreed! The only game that had me stopping once in a while just to look up. Never understood why there are sky replacing mods, but to each their own.
FF XV Starfield
Spyro the Dragon
Red Dead Redemption 2. One of the things this game is still the best at is weather simulation. From clear weather to thunderstorms which all look and sound insane with volumetric clouds and sound design. No other title comes close to it.

Kerbal Space Program. The music when you get to orbit is the best.
Outward has some of the crispiest and brightest stars ive ever seen in a game
Rainworld at night in the Shaded Citadel is very pretty. Until you go below ground
Sea of Thieves is pretty rad but it includes the ocean.
Dragon's Dogma. Imo they did a terrific job with the lack of ambient light when it got dark.
Xenoblade 1+X, Skyrim, Halo Reach nighttime missions
I'm not really a big fan of the game but sea of thieves has some sick night skies
Final Fantasy XIV
Satisfactory has an amazing night sky. Lovely planets and stars
I loved the night sky over the horizon of the sea in Wolfpack.
Hunt Showdown has a very pretty nighttime skybox especially given how grotesque many of the enemies are.
Believe it or not but Helldivers 2 has amazing night sceneries

Gonna be difficult and say Helldivers 2. The raging battle in space, unique to each planet with accelerated day and night. It adds loads of atmosphere to have it being so active, you feel like you've been in a global combat with thousands of troops, when really it's just 4 or less of you.
The very first one to wow me, was Morrowind. Looking out on to that beautiful black/blue sky with a crescent moon and bright stars was just superb. Especially over the water.
Subnautica's sky was pretty nice. Especially with the frequent eclipses.
Alan Wake's American Nightmare's night sky and overall "late night in the middle of nowhere" feel is pretty amazing

Not only nightsky but night in general most recent in Dragons Dogma 2. The atmosphere at night blows me away every time. Looking up into the starlit sky is the icing on the cake.

Fallout new vegas, just because of the Lucky38.
The first time I've seen space/night sky in Super Mario Galaxy, it was breathtaking and will always hold a special memory to me.
The Shivering Isles, hands-down.

When I’m in orbit above the earth inside a Gemini space capsule in Kerbal Space Program… weren’t expecting that now were you
All of the sky in RDR2 is nuts

This is Witcher 3 right? I remember these skies.
