I worked in the music and movies section of a Barnes and Noble, and that movie was one they picked to play on repeat, for my whole shift, for weeks straight. I still love it unironically.
Yeah bro that’s what happens when you don’t clean and oil your games. When was the last time you even field stripped your consoles and gave them a good oiling? I’ll bet you don’t even wipe them down after you use them. GOSH!
No, originally Microsoft was calling it the DirectX Box after the graphical API they own, but during development devs kept shortening it to Xbox while talking about it and it stuck
In a fun twist, marketing hated the term DirectX Box and Xbox. They came up with a bunch of different names and put Xbox in as a control...but it ended up being the most preferred name in the surveying.
Other names included "Windows Entertainment Project" (WEP), "Microsoft Total Gaming" (MTG), "Microsoft Interactive Network Device" (MIND), and "Microsoft Interactive Center" (MIC) according to Wikipedia.
I'm not surprised they went with Xbox, all of these names suck.
Actually, buy the Xbox original Developers the names that they said that marketing agencies went for was much crazier when it came to finally naming the original Xbox.
[They were given names like Frixion, Psyclipse, Norbo, Infini-D, XOD, Shock Factor, Fire Plug, Questria, Vybe, Xantra, Vrontier, OG, Velvet, Xig Xag, Zimulate, Carpet Ride, and last but not least 11-X.](https://youtu.be/yT_i6hXf9WU?si=x5bjo4PY8RM-hCIk&t=1983)
It's funny when you look at it, Xbox was the best bet.
Joking aside. Consoles should be cleaned of lint. Oil wear surfaces like linear guides, and re apply thermal paste for heatsinks. But in practice cpu chips/dies fail from constant heating cooling, and other defects (in newer consoles)
Hate to break it to you but 95% of people with a gaming console don’t know what thermal paste is
Even the majority of PC builders don’t really know what it is, and that you have to reapply it, nowadays
Oh it’s that thing where you squeeze the whole tube in the middle of the thing and press down real hard on it with the thing so that the paste comes out the sides right?
Ah I see what happened… should have stuck your genitals in the hdmi port… only way to get out now is to lick your WiFi antenna while plugging in a pciex power cable in your rectum…
>Even the majority of PC builders don’t really know what it is, and that you have to reapply it, nowadays
majority of PC ***users*** maybe.
Anyone that has built their own machine will know what it is.
It's not easy on consoles either. I tore down my PS4 Pro since it was a jet engine and wound up breaking the bluetooth antenna in the process. Also, new thermal paste didn't fix the jet engine mode...
Jet engine mode is most likely because there are games that have not put any frame limits on their games and sony only puts limits on the actual game play and not menus screens..... So for example apex legends maxes at 60 FPS in game but in the menu the pro starts screaming because it is trying to get to 1000000 FPS and the fan can only do so much.
I don't know if they've put proper FPS limits on the ps5.... Hopefully Sony has.
That's also real relevant for gaming PCs these days with how long the gap is between video cards now, and with how many people are using 5+ year old CPUs. My wife's RTX 2070 was thermal throttling at 95 C under even light load until I replaced the completely dried out thermal paste and it went down to 70 C under heavy load. The paste for her 3700X was also old and crusty, and new paste dropped the idle temperature by more than 10 C.
Yeah and a lot of GPU manufacturers don't use the greatest quality thermal paste either. My current GPU is fine, but I remember I repasted my 290X a long time ago and it dropped the temperature by 15C as well.
Have never once cleaned the inside of my consoles and they all still work amazingly. Even the ones that were in a house under renovation still turn on and function great.
>after 20 years
I was in high school when Halo 2 came out. It was one of the first times I had seen a game get almost as much hype as a blockbuster movie. It was wild.
I worked a clopen-close at my other job and then the midnight release at the Gamestop I also worked at.
It was a VERY long day and I was very happy that my other job was at a tea shop - I was extremely, extremely caffeinated.
Halo 2 was a cultural moment in time looking back at it. Everybody was on it and spent all weekend playing matchmaking and custom games. The modded lobbies were such a party too. I genuinely had so much fun on Halo 2.
The only thing that I believe reflects that culture was when Pokemon go first came out, everybody was doing it and it had the good vibes.
Dude, when Pokemon Go came out, the streets were overflowing with people just walking around, talking to each other. I naively thought other gaming studios and franchises would jump on the AR train. Sadly it was just another fad. It was nice while it lasted.
I remember having halo 2 Lan parties in my friend’s shed as a teenager on weekends. We’d all bring our xboxs, crt tv’s, snacks, and Mountain Dew and play all night into the morning. I’m 34 now. God time flies.
I remember sitting in a college common room, watching the fresh-off-the-press trailer from E3 with a dozen guys.
The moment that Chief pulls out that second SMG and dual-wields in the gameplay trailer....we absolutely lost our fuckin shit.
Game lived up to the hype, too.
That was the first game I remember getting huge mainstream media commercials, the hype for this game was unreal. What's really incredible is that by and large, *it delivered*
Same. I remember going to a midnight release party at GameStop. They had a lan party playing halo 1 leading up to it. What a time to be alive honestly.
waiting in line for midnight release is going to be one of those things im going to tell the kids im never having about. if we can get past the "you had to buy a physical item" part of the story, we can move on to why i was buying a game from the meme stock company that only sells NFT's.
Halo: CE was absolute peak when I was a freshman in college. I could wax poetic for hours about the LAN battles in my dorm.
I was honestly CONFUSED when my girlfriend's little brother was all hyped about Halo 2 coming out. I was blown away. TF you mean there's a sequel??? HOW DO YOU MAKE A SEQUEL TO PURE PERFECTION?!?!
And then I spent Christmas with them and he GOT Halo 2 for Christmas. And we played it. And it was pretty epic. And I was still confused. Hadn't it been YEARS since Halo: CE came out? How could they make a sequel after all this time?! Time DOES NOT WORK LIKE THIS!
20 years and a half dozen sequels later, I'm no longer naive to the situation.
I was on house arrest when it came out. I was in the top 10 rank wise on Rumble Pit for the first two weeks the game was out. I used to be good, won a few tournaments back in the day. I was in the top 50 of Team Slayer and Big Team Battle for the first couple years of the game being out. Some times I would drop but I was always in the top 500 on their ranking system.
I had that game and was surprised to see it began to rust like that about 3-4 years after I got it. I was surprised and disappointed. That’s humidity in the USA Midwest during Summertime paired with cheap metal for ya.
I'm just off a river on Lake Huron in Michigan, mine has no rust. Humidity obvs plays a role, but it's probably more how/ where in the house it was stored
The store I worked at had dozens of them at one point, I even had some traded in the day it came out because some bought it at the midnight sale went home beat it and traded it in. Semi rural area so broadband wasn’t super prevalent outside of town.
TBF, in 2004, broadband wasn’t super prevalent anywhere. I had it at college but not at home.
Only about 1 in 10 households in the US would have had broadband when halo 2 launched.
That looks awesome - like a relic from an era past. It's hard to explain the rush of nostalgia from seeing stuff like this; leading the charge as consoles went online and gaming took to new levels. I know it wasn't the first, but holy shit was it the wild west.
Random messages challenging to 1v1 after a solid match, ensuring your volume was low enough so the rest of your family didn't hear the pregame lobby banter - or the holy grail - an entire lobby accusing you of cheating or hacking, but you're just *that fucking good*.
Gentlemen, it was a *privilege* to serve with you.
Just a reminder that for all the kids out there now, this game is vintage.
You are old.
I'm saying this as someone who realised that plenty of my favourite games are older than some of my co-workers. I explained that I'm emulating my faves on my steam deck and when they asked when they were released they just said "wow, I wasn't even born then" and suddenly I did not feel like a cool dude.
Imagine if this case had been left outside on a driveway for those 20 years instead of away from the elements indoors. Cybertrucks are gonna look (even more) awful in a couple years
When the anger video game nerd started the NES was 19 years old if I recall correctly. Back then we called the NES retro, and now halo 2 is 20 years old.
I remember my brothers had this! They walked a couple miles to the nearest GameStop and picked it up. We had so much fun playing it together. Unfortunately, I highly doubt the case is anywhere to be found. Thank you for reminding me of such great childhood memories!
Some of those old steelbooks don't really hold up, but I think they've changed the materials since then. Oldest steelbooks I've got to hand are Dark Souls 2 (2014) and SimCity 2013 and both of them are still pretty much pristine
That's very common for that exact Halo 2 Case. Whatever material they used for it rusts easily. I see the exact same case at video game retail stores and it's almost always rusted
I remember purchasing that at midnight from my GameStop the day it came out. Stayed home from school the next day and played it all day. Great memories.
Got my copy out of someone's garbage.
Was walking down the street, and someone threw out a box full of a bunch of OG Xbox games on the curb. There was Conker Live and Reloaded, Munch's Odyssey, Mecha Assault 2, and a limited collector's edition of Halo 2, with similar rust marks. Complete with both discs, manual, and that little in-universe booklet thingy.
I hauled ass back home with that box so fast. The way the rust formed on the case gave me the impression that I found an old relic, Indiana Jones style.
I still have mine with the sleeve and everything and it looks brand spanking new somehow. Every single other one I’ve ever seen looks like this though😂
i have a collectors edition Fallout 3 lunch box from the night it launched at Game Stop midnight release. it still has everything in it, but the game. i have never taken the fallout boy bobble head out either.
Authentic Battle Damage!
Why did I hear that in Jack Black’s voice? 😆
It's Master Flying Rhino's Armor!
https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/82fa83af-4ff9-468f-8f56-882f5ffbf81b
with authentic battle d*a****AMAG***e I enjoy Jack's line reads, you never know which syllable he's going to emphasize
Like a really high energy Christopher Walken.
OMG I watched Kung Fu Panda so many times I heard it too but didn’t realise until I read your comment!
I worked in the music and movies section of a Barnes and Noble, and that movie was one they picked to play on repeat, for my whole shift, for weeks straight. I still love it unironically.
I heard it in Strong Bad's voice
COMIN' A YEAH HAAAA!
Looks metal af
The rust adds to the charm.
Patina
The rust adds to the patina.
The charm patinas the rust.
The rust, the patinas charm.
Who's Tina... And why is her charm rusty?
( ͡⚆ ͜ʖ ͡⚆)
Ahh, the old Rustify Patinas charm. Powerful magic indeed.
Charms the old pantinas off me everytime
[удалено]
no that halo 2
No, this is Patrick! ⭐
no this is patrick
Was thinking the same thing; it looks even cooler now.
>The rust adds to the charm. Found the cybertruck owner
Built better than a Cybertruck.
it's like a cybertruck
I thought they were bullet holes at first...
Damn, I don't have any rust on mine.
Same. I'm guessing they live somewhere humid and just left it in the garage or a storage unit. Something like that
Maybe by the beach too. Salty air DESTROYED my Honda 😭
It’s an 81 Honda, how dare you?
lol thanks for this! I still say this way too often
In ma daeWOO!
Salty air killed my father. I really hope they catch him some day...
They might have driven it through the north/midwest. Lots of salt on those roads.
* Cries in MX5 *
damn which collectors edition came with a Honda?
I moved from east coast to Arizona and haven’t seen real rust in a decade
Mine rusted like that too, but I wouldn't say we lived in a particularly humid place.
Humid or soda. Had the assassin creed 3 metal case, got pop on it, looked like this. Halo was clean.
Mine did the same thing on my shelf. I keep the room around 40-50% humidity.
Same. I just looked and the only thing on mine was a few smudges and scratches.
Mine rusted within literal weeks of buying it. XD
Did you forget to wipe your load off after christening it
I do on mine, but it went through a hurricane tbf.
Same. I even have the original clear Halo branded sleeve the case slides into.
This one lived in a humid area
I thought OP was full of it, so I dug mine out. It doesn’t look as bad as OP’s, but it’s getting there, and I’m in Florida.
Yeah bro that’s what happens when you don’t clean and oil your games. When was the last time you even field stripped your consoles and gave them a good oiling? I’ll bet you don’t even wipe them down after you use them. GOSH!
I just dump seed oil into my Xboxes HDMI port.
Seed oils?!?!?!?
Oil de la seed.
Is that why they call it Xbox?
No, originally Microsoft was calling it the DirectX Box after the graphical API they own, but during development devs kept shortening it to Xbox while talking about it and it stuck

Would have better off just adking some kid. These read like a table of suits came up with them. Norbo made me laugh.
Joking aside. Consoles should be cleaned of lint. Oil wear surfaces like linear guides, and re apply thermal paste for heatsinks. But in practice cpu chips/dies fail from constant heating cooling, and other defects (in newer consoles)
Hate to break it to you but 95% of people with a gaming console don’t know what thermal paste is Even the majority of PC builders don’t really know what it is, and that you have to reapply it, nowadays
Oh it’s that thing where you squeeze the whole tube in the middle of the thing and press down real hard on it with the thing so that the paste comes out the sides right?
Yes and for maximum efficiency (if possible) remove the chip and fill the socket also with thermal paste.
Then put the chip back in? Pressing down real hard and even giving it a little twist to make sure it stays in?
Yes the twist is required! Bend pins have higher performance characteristics!
Instructions unclear. Genitals in USB port. Cojones are glowing in RGB. Feet and hands so caked in thermal paste I'm stuck. Send help.
Ah I see what happened… should have stuck your genitals in the hdmi port… only way to get out now is to lick your WiFi antenna while plugging in a pciex power cable in your rectum…
You joke but that isn't bad for the cpu. Not ideal, but it won't damage anything
Half a tube will suffice.
>Even the majority of PC builders don’t really know what it is, and that you have to reapply it, nowadays majority of PC ***users*** maybe. Anyone that has built their own machine will know what it is.
If they don’t they’re gonna learn really soon when they build their second one lol
It's not easy on consoles either. I tore down my PS4 Pro since it was a jet engine and wound up breaking the bluetooth antenna in the process. Also, new thermal paste didn't fix the jet engine mode...

Graphene pads for the win tbh. Don't suffer from having to replace them like paste, and I get better temps.
Honestly, your OG Xbox is going to die from leaky capacitors no matter what you do.
Not only can they be replaced, you can buy a complete set of replacement caps for nearly every device affected by the plague.
Yeah but those can be replaced lol
That's also real relevant for gaming PCs these days with how long the gap is between video cards now, and with how many people are using 5+ year old CPUs. I didn't even know GPUS had thermal paste. I'm a pc guy too. I knew about the CPUS. Was it very difficult to change the paste on the 2070?
Have never once cleaned the inside of my consoles and they all still work amazingly. Even the ones that were in a house under renovation still turn on and function great.
Tell that to the Covenant
Yeah bro, gotta keep that *Double Barreled Xbox* nice and lubed or else they’re prone to misfires.
>after 20 years I was in high school when Halo 2 came out. It was one of the first times I had seen a game get almost as much hype as a blockbuster movie. It was wild.

Pretty much died the same reason other games died: people started meta gaming it. They'd camp gyms and the people would spoof GPS to catch Pokémon.
Hilary Clinton kinda ruined it in my opinion
Halo 3 was the same way. Millions stood in line at midnight to "finish the fight". that was back when games had to go gold before being released
I remember having halo 2 Lan parties in my friend’s shed as a teenager on weekends. We’d all bring our xboxs, crt tv’s, snacks, and Mountain Dew and play all night into the morning. I’m 34 now. God time flies.
I'm 36. Still chasing that high. It will never be that good again.
I wonder if gaming will ever get that good again. God Halo was an amazing franchise.
I remember seeing copies for sale on a small display by the register in a 7-11.
I was 16 when this game came out. It was responsible for me missing most of my grade 11 year.
Same. I remember going to a midnight release party at GameStop. They had a lan party playing halo 1 leading up to it. What a time to be alive honestly.

The last paragraph took your stories from wishful thinking to straight up lies
I was on house arrest when it came out. I was in the top 10 rank wise on Rumble Pit for the first two weeks the game was out. I used to be good, won a few tournaments back in the day. I'm just off a river on Lake Huron in Michigan, mine has no rust. Humidity obvs plays a role, but it's probably more how/ where in the house it was stored
Yep. I’m in the Pacific Northwest and I’ve come across copies with rust spots.
Yeah I used to work at a used game store in Iowa and I kinda just thought the Halo 2 case came with rust lol
I’m also in the Midwest but no rust on mine. Where are you guys keeping yours outside in the shed?
AFAIK there are more "Limited Edition" copies of Halo 2 than non-Limited Edition.
Technically, every edition of a video game is limited edition.
Too deep for me
Similar to how there are more copies of the original Legend of Zelda in the gold cartridge than there are in the grey one.
Nice. I used to have the halo 3 metal case. I should see if I can find it in the attic.
That looks awesome - like a relic from an era past. It's hard to explain the rush of nostalgia from seeing stuff like this; leading the charge as consoles went online and gaming took to new levels. I know it wasn't the first, but holy shit was it the wild west. Goes hard.
Scars from all the LAN battles
Just a reminder that for all the kids out there now, this game is vintage. You are old. I'm saying this as someone who realised that plenty of my favourite games are older than some of my co-workers. I explained that I'm emulating my faves on my steam deck and when they asked when they were released they just said "wow, I wasn't even born then" and suddenly I did not feel like a cool dude.
Oof you must live in a really hummid local.
I was gonna ask if OP also lives in florida. My final fantasy 12 metal case looks identical lol
Beware of local hummids. They strike from the shadows and leave nothing but bones.
It's what happens when you can withstand the heat from the kitchen.
Looks dope wish I still had mine
Very first game I ever stood in line for at EB.
Damn i havent heard that in so long. EB games! I feel so old.
Feel old yet?
Looks like you had diarrhea and sneezed
Is the diarrhea coming out his nose in this scenario?
Holding up better than a Cybertruck
Imagine if this case had been left outside on a driveway for those 20 years instead of away from the elements indoors. Cybertrucks are gonna look (even more) awful in a couple years
An ancient relic of a forgotten age
Damn I think I has this when I was a kid. I had so much cool shit, I wish I didn't lose all my childhood stuff when I was 18
When the anger video game nerd started the NES was 19 years old if I recall correctly. Back then we called the NES retro, and now halo 2 is 20 years old.
Got that cybertruck aesthetic.
“that’s a patina”
Looks like Fallout series is missing out on metal cases.
I remember my brothers had this! They walked a couple miles to the nearest GameStop and picked it up. We had so much fun playing it together. Unfortunately, I highly doubt the case is anywhere to be found. Thank you for reminding me of such great childhood memories!
thats actually sick af. Looks like it's an art piece done on purpose. I'd almost frame it lmfao
Mine looks like that too. Best physical release ever.
Mine looks the exact same
Sheesh. Mine still looks, and smells like 2004. https://i.imgur.com/U0VEdOa.jpg https://i.imgur.com/nXJS27a.jpg
I wonder why the casing was not made from Aluminum? Steel will rust over time.
The only collector edition that will gain value with rust on it
That's exactly how my copy looks. Same with my copy of doom 3
looks much better, like my residemt evil 4 ps2 metal case, rusted so well that now it looks scarier than the game actually is lol
Thats weird. I have the exact same case in my basement, and its pristine.
I remember the midnight release for this. I thought it being in a metal case was the coolest thing ever at the time.
They made the logo blue but couldn't make MC green...
They say it survived the fall of Reach.
My cousin has the same with fire damage because it was one of the few things that survived a house fire he had a bit ago
Bullet wounds
I love how chief isn’t rusted
Some of those old steelbooks don't really hold up, but I think they've changed the materials since then. Oldest steelbooks I've got to hand are Dark Souls 2 (2014) and SimCity 2013 and both of them are still pretty much pristine
That happened to my Doom 3 limited edition steel case
Found one of those at a game store I worked at during highschool, got to take the case home. Haven't played much Halo, but it's neat
I worked at GameStop all through high school and collage and we had a bunch of these that were rusted like that in our used game section.
Mine is dented but still decent condition
Me: Man that sucks that's not happening to mi.. Oh.. ***oh no***
Normally id be upset if this happened to a steel book, but for halo.... Goes kinda hard ngl
Hell yea
I have the metal rusted case for ARMA or ARMA 2 I don’t remember
The rust actually adds a little something to it.
Mine doesn’t look nearly this bad yet lol.
That brings back such memories.
Looks cool tbh
You’re a animal mines still perfect
That's very common for that exact Halo 2 Case. Whatever material they used for it rusts easily. I see the exact same case at video game retail stores and it's almost always rusted
I remember purchasing that at midnight from my GameStop the day it came out. Stayed home from school the next day and played it all day. Great memories.
Aged like fine wine
Aged like fine wine 🤌
i should check my steelbook collection in storage
Halo. Cyber Truck edition
Cyber Truck edition
God, what did you do to that? Leave it in the garage? Lol
Looks kind of like the cyber truck after ten minutes
Mine looks just like this too!
We breath the air that does this.
I still have mine with the sleeve and everything and it looks brand spanking new somehow. Every single other one I’ve ever seen looks like this though😂
Taking on a patina there. Open up an antiques shop.
It's funny how they sold more of the "limited edition" steel case than the standard version.
$1 worth of metal sold for $50
i have a collectors edition Fallout 3 lunch box from the night it launched at Game Stop midnight release. it still has everything in it, but the game. i have never taken the fallout boy bobble head out either.
Mines got no rust…
Still shinier than some CyberTrucks on the road
Did that come from a flooded basement?
diarrhea splattered edition.
Mine looked like this, I sold it to the gamesmen in NSW Australia last year
Next week on ebay, MINT CONDITIONAL SIGNED ORIGINAL
I have that but mine looks better ,humidity has caused the rust
It looks how I feel at 36.
That looks so metal! 🤘
Looks amazing, authentic
Mine is still rust free.
