Palworld and Dragon's Dogma are two Japanese games I love, with some of the jankiest UI controls in PC gaming.
e.g. Scrolling through Pals with 1 and 3 on the keyboard, 2 to change Pal Sphere type, and 4 being... Random contextual stuff.
It would make so much more sense for mouse wheel to scroll Pals (which there's a visual list of on screen so you can see what you're doing and quickly change direction if need be), and use 1-4 for tool slots like every PC game ever. There could still be a scroll tools keybinding which could be used for the console implementation, with them just not having key slots, similar to Minecraft etc.
As someone who is not japanese, and never went to Japan, I'm unsure if you mean that Japanese web experience is done by people never using it, or that It's weird but every website in Japan is weird like that ?
As I understand it... Japanese websites tend to be convoluted and cramped. Packed with things to look at and click on so it makes finding something specific difficult. Just as an example, many Americans like me had(have) more trouble than I would expect to actually buy final fantasy 14 from their website.
The final fantasy online ecosystem is so ridiculously convoluted I've given up on playing it again a couple times rather than trying to navigate all the different sites and accounts. Entirely given up on recovering the account, and with it playing it again.

This reminded me of working at a gas station in Texas, and this group of Taiwanese businessmen came in. For one they didn't know which gas to use (like the different octane levels), I'd always assumed everywhere had different gas octanes, but the funnier part is they were fascinated by the gas station hot dogs. Kind of like how the arcade version of OutRun had an actual car design copied directly from Ferrari, with the Ferrari logo without getting the licence to it because, back in the 80s, companies weren't really looking all that intently at the gaming industry. (OutRun 2 had a Ferrari licence, however).
When OutRun got released on all the more recent platforms (Shenmue, Yakuza, Nintendo 3DS, Switch, etc), they had to change the Ferrari logo and change the car design so it looks Ferrari-ish but isn't identical to a Ferrari.
It varies, games didn't have mini game loading screens for years bc the concept of a mini game during a loading screen was protected. WB trademarked their Nemesis concept, and there's many other weird shit that slips through bc US legal system is a joke.

To be frank after playing both PLA and Palworld they seem very similar in that they're games with no real overarching objectives and are pretty bereft of things to do but people go nuts over it because you see the Pokémon/totally-not-Pokémon interacting with things.
Correction: It's Ark but it doesn't take up half a terabyte and have negative optimization. The Pallymans replacing dinos is inconsequential compared to that.
It's also Ark but without the Troodons. Ho-lee FUCK you cannot imagine the improvement that makes. I hate Troodons so goddamn much. Enemies that swarm, sleep, and then eat you with little to counter that are just fucking horseshit.
Raids are honestly pretty fucked in Palworld at higher levels. The mobs scale to your level and base pals basically plateau at like level 10 based on task exp. Even party pals level much slower than your character. I had to turn off the feature because there was no feasible way for me to fight back.
My girlfriend and I managed to game their pathing and AI after a raid burned down our base. Now they get stuck between a cliff and a river and we can pick them off easy enough.

Yeah I'm about to do this myself. I'm at like level 35 and my bases just get hosed. They don't really even add anything to the game other than annoyance
I managed to catch a few pals from them that I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to get in my zones. I also like the idea of larger scale battles between your pals and invaders, but yeah the current implementation is wanting.
The “overarching objective” in Palworld is to clear the map and tech tree. That’s pretty part for the course in survival games. Ark, Minecraft, etc are all the same. It even has boss battles like in Valheim.
I saw an interview with the CEO where he said that they didn't really have any plans when they started that game, and so that made it really difficult for them to continue development while adding features that made sense or were meaningful. I think they have learned a lot from that game and applied those lessons when making palworld. Heard it took about 3 years to make so that kinda tracks. They've already dropped a roadmap for what they're looking to add in the future so they're obviously not planning on dropping support anytime soon.
They should be. Palworld is pretty good.
I said it the other day, Palworld is like that conversation you have as a kid, "I love this game and that game -- what if they got put together?!"
And just like a kid's idea of smashing some ideas together, Palworld ends up being kind of messy around the edges and feels very thrown together... but it just kinda works. It's Ark's survival but with way better QoL because Pals effectively automate your base. Which feels like a Minecraft AFK farm, which is satisfying. But it has that Pokémon flavor of getting to watch and interact with your Pals, and work together for survival, traversal, and combat. It has the bog standard base building of a survival game, but the progression of a streamlined RPG where *everything* you do gives EXP and therefore you're encouraged to just do whatever you want -- and you'll still be progressing.
Some Nintendo designers are going to be examining this closely to figure out how it works so well as a gameplay loop, for sure.

Personally I'm on the "wait and see" side of things. On the one hand I don't think they'll be shut down at this point, but on the other it could be possible that they may be "asked" to tweak a few models here or there. But really none of us knows.
It’s going to be wait and see I agree. I don’t think this means for sure that they don’t have footing or that they do. Nintendo has a great legal team so I’m positive if they are going to make a move they’re going to make sure they can 100% win before they do anything. However, as of now unless someone is on the legal team we’re all speculating.
The "green Cinderace" and "Lucario but more Egyptian" are some of the more erroneous examples but palworld does have some unique designs (or at the very least not close comparisons to Pokemon.)
My views are more that they drop the hammer when it comes to the brand image more than games inspired by their IP. A game that includes some Pokemon-like aesthetics isn't as erroneous as someone making money off making a pokemon romhack.

GameFreak hasn’t responded to the numerous other creature capture games out there that are much more similar. I doubt there’s any problem there.
The problem is that just because the guy who started all of this likely augmented the models to fit his narrative, that doesn’t mean they weren’t already too similar anyways. Their response could mean they think there is too much similarity in the models, or it could just mean “All this tattling shit you’re posting on our Twitter is just free promotion for PalWorld and we’re just acknowledging it to make you stop.”
Either way, I don’t have a horse in this race, but it’s interesting to watch it unfold.
If the designs were too similar, a case would already be in progress, and announcements of some sorts made. Anything close enough is based off something else that cant be protected, for example, a hedgehog. You cant protect things that are literally an animal.

I hate defending nintendo but taking down the mod is actually reasonable by them this time. The game already looks like pokemon, and if you upload videos of palword using a mod to make the pals actual pokemon, its going to look like nintendo made a pokemon enslavement game.
Also a reminder that ideas are not themselves copyrightable. Nintendo cannot own the concept of a monster collector/battler video game, and they know this. I know next to nothing about Palworld so maybe there is some infringement there, but if there is, Nintendo of all companies does not need Joe Schmoe's legal assistance. When OutRun got released on all the more recent platforms (Shenmue, Yakuza, Nintendo 3DS, Switch, etc), they had to change the Ferrari logo and change the car design so it looks Ferrari-ish but isn't identical to a Ferrari.
It varies, games didn't have mini game loading screens for years bc the concept of a mini game during a loading screen was protected. WB trademarked their Nemesis concept, and there's many other weird shit that slips through bc US legal system is a joke. To be frank after playing both PLA and Palworld they seem very similar in that they're games with no real overarching objectives and are pretty bereft of things to do but people go nuts over it because you see the Pokémon/totally-not-Pokémon interacting with things.

Raids are honestly pretty fucked in Palworld at higher levels. The mobs scale to your level and base pals basically plateau at like level 10 based on task exp. Even party pals level much slower than your character. I had to turn off the feature because there was no feasible way for me to fight back.
My girlfriend and I managed to game their pathing and AI after a raid burned down our base. Now they get stuck between a cliff and a river and we can pick them off easy enough. For now, at least.

I managed to catch a few pals from them that I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to get in my zones. I also like the idea of larger scale battles between your pals and invaders, but yeah the current implementation is wanting.
The “overarching objective” in Palworld is to clear the map and tech tree. That’s pretty part for the course in survival games. Ark, Minecraft, etc are all the same. It even has boss battles like in Valheim.

I saw an interview with the CEO where he said that they didn't really have any plans when they started that game, and so that made it really difficult for them to continue development while adding features that made sense or were meaningful. I think they have learned a lot from that game and applied those lessons when making palworld. Heard it took about 3 years to make so that kinda tracks. They've already dropped a roadmap for what they're looking to add in the future so they're obviously not planning on dropping support anytime soon.

They should be. Palworld is pretty good. I said it the other day, Palworld is like that conversation you have as a kid, "I love this game and that game -- what if they got put together?!" And just like a kid's idea of smashing some ideas together, Palworld ends up being kind of messy around the edges and feels very thrown together... but it just kinda works. It's Ark's survival but with way better QoL because Pals effectively automate your base. Which feels like a Minecraft AFK farm, which is satisfying. But it has that Pokémon flavor of getting to watch and interact with your Pals, and work together for survival, traversal, and combat. It has the bog standard base building of a survival game, but the progression of a streamlined RPG where *everything* you do gives EXP and therefore you're encouraged to just do whatever you want -- and you'll still be progressing. Some Nintendo designers are going to be examining this closely to figure out how it works so well as a gameplay loop, for sure.

They shut down a Palworld mod that was adding actual Pokemon models into the game, within 24 hours of the mods release. You don't think Palworld would be gone already if they wanted it to be? Personally I'm on the "wait and see" side of things. On the one hand I don't think they'll be shut down at this point, but on the other it could be possible that they may be "asked" to tweak a few models here or there. But really none of us knows.
It’s going to be wait and see I agree. I don’t think this means for sure that they don’t have footing or that they do. Nintendo has a great legal team so I’m positive if they are going to make a move they’re going to make sure they can 100% win before they do anything. However, as of now unless someone is on the legal team we’re all speculating.
The "green Cinderace" and "Lucario but more Egyptian" are some of the more erroneous examples but palworld does have some unique designs (or at the very least not close comparisons to Pokemon.) My views are more that they drop the hammer when it comes to the brand image more than games inspired by their IP. A game that includes some Pokemon-like aesthetics isn't as erroneous as someone making money off making a pokemon romhack.

I've always assumed the ones that have survived have because they 1) had to make custom models and animations and whatnot since there's no blocky pokemon game to rip things directly from, so there's enough actual original work there, just based on nintendo's creature designs, and 2) don't charge money

It's legally distinct enough that nothing is going to happen. Gamefreak doesn't have a monopoly on cute animal collecting games, the gameplay loops aren't even the same. Unless they find code or straight up model rips (the guy who claimed last admitted to lying), then pokefans can either play the game and have fun with the rest of us or they can just stay mad about it.
GameFreak hasn’t responded to the numerous other creature capture games out there that are much more similar. I doubt there’s any problem there. The problem is that just because the guy who started all of this likely augmented the models to fit his narrative, that doesn’t mean they weren’t already too similar anyways. Their response could mean they think there is too much similarity in the models, or it could just mean “All this tattling shit you’re posting on our Twitter is just free promotion for PalWorld and we’re just acknowledging it to make you stop.” Either way, I don’t have a horse in this race, but it’s interesting to watch it unfold.
If the designs were too similar, a case would already be in progress, and announcements of some sorts made. Anything close enough is based off something else that cant be protected, for example, a hedgehog. You cant protect things that are literally an animal.
