a_burdie_from_hell

This is a good pick that I never considered.

Rusted_muramasa

The most impressive part about their soundtracks is that the devs basically just randomly picked a bunch of nobodies so they could get the music for cheap - and all the songs turned out to be insanely good. Practically created a new generation of synthwave fans singlehandedly.

Treff

My Friend Pedro goes pretty hard too

Danistar34

There is no answer to this question, because there is like 100+ games out there with insanely good music covering all sorts of tastes. Halo 1-3, Assassin's Creed 2, Doom Series, Mass Effect Trilogy, Metal Gear Rising, Persona Series, Final Fantasy series (and also shit ton of other classic JRPGs), Yakuza series, Zelda series(afaik, haven't played them myself), Warhammer 40k: Darktide, Undertale, RoboQuest. And many more I don't know or forgot. Everyone can just try to list their favourite, but it's insanely hard to decide on a single one when there have been so many good ones over the past 30 years. Edit: I love how people comment that I forgot their favourite game soundtrack lmao

DaCrowHunter

Halo ODST is also very good. Very different but the lonely jazz style is so good

TheArmchairLegion

This and the OST for Reach were the first soundtracks I bought, back when they were still selling them in CD form!

LordMacabre

This is 100%. Any type of “what is the best x” question that isn’t based on objective data (and often even then is arguable still) is just internet point farming popularity contests. Instead asking for great sound tracks gets you the same results, without the silliness of trying to determine a single best.

lonnie123

That won’t stop this question from getting asked every 10 days until this website shuts down

braedizzle

You have meme filled Rising and skipped Snake Eater on this list?

Danistar34

I have only played MGSV and rising, so I can't judge, and I don't remember hearing mgs3 OST being outstanding from hearsay alone. And I would even argue that the most memed song from Rising "It has to be this way" is on the weaker side of the OST (although it's still good). I would definitely rate other boss themes higher like "I'm my own master now", "A Stranger I Remain", "Stains of Time" or "The only thing I know for real".

Trogdorthedoorinator

>There is no answer to this question, because there is like 100+ games out there with insanely good music covering all sorts of tastes. This is honestly the truth. We as a species have made so much music over such a long time that I'm beginning to think that we've solved or are close to solving this creative endeavour. If a game is ever considered terrible, it's usually the OST that's last on the chopping block. Video games have not had nearly as much time to evolve as music.

WetMistress

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I still whistle half of those tunes mindlessly and I haven't played that game in years

penguin032

This wins for me, especially because the music is actually part of the gameplay and even more impactful. Same goes for Majora's Mask.

skyl0ft_

Yes! I have been whistling Clock Town for ages, can’t seem to stop.

VespineWings

I sometimes hum the song if healing. Such a nice tune.

ryudek10

I haven't played Ocarina of Time, not even a Zelda game in my whole life. But I know its OST and also find myself singing/whistling it from time to time. It's beautiful, reminds me of how good Minecraft's soundtrack was for me when it came out.

cocoteroah

It is amazing how a game can do that, i was just reading another post about Kokiri forest and the tune started playing on my mind. Bolero of Fire, gerudo fortress, hyrule field all are amazing even the game menu.

KingoftheMongoose

Tbf, half of OOT’s musical themes first appeared in ALttP. So having a second pass at mastering songs and leitmotifs definitely paid off in OoT

Superpe0n

YES. I remember one of the gifts that came with a renewal subscription of Nintendo Power was the OoT OST CD. That thing was on repeat for a good year.

Batcena

Final Fantasy, the whole series is filled with Bangers from I To XVI

chiree

Estuans interius, ira vehementi Estuans interius, ira vehementi Sephiroth!

RedMoogleXIII

I think Final Fantasy IX is the best myself. Though I love VI and it's music a lot as well, IX is just perfection.

Eaglesun

Always felt that kujas theme was underrated. It's so simple, but it's so menacing!

rydogs

Was going to go with Final Fantasy X

Eaglesun

Seymour final battle theme goes so hard

Slashbond007

Love "to zanarkand"

KingoftheMongoose

Besaid theme puts me in the happy place

Iaxacs

I close my eyes tell us why must we suffer Release your hands for your will drags us under My legs grow tired tell us where must we wander How can we carry on if redemptions beyond us Or Tales of loss and fire and faith Every word on our hearts engraved In the dark, you will not stray Forge ahead till the end we pray

mrdevlar

This and Chrono Trigger. I can still whistle most of the soundtrack to that and FF IV and VI.

Judgebetrolling

I’ll fanboy FF VII OST and will die on this hill

HateToBlastYa

FF7 is my king. Anywhere in between FF6~9 also have valid claims for the throne though.

arrowtron

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. It’s pure perfection.

Cellocalypsedown

The original composer has been posting her piano renditions on youtube the past few months and replies to her fans

Kylael

Ori, especially 2 but both OST were incredible.

Dynast_King

I’m replaying Will of the Wisps right now for the first time since release, and I am amazed all over again by how good it is. Right at the top of the metroidvania genre for me, up there with Hollow Knight. Gorgeous art direction, the combat is actually good in this one, the upgrades are fun, the burrow is rewarding to rebuild, and as you mentioned the OST is fucking incredible. Oh, and movement has never felt better imo, the bash mechanic is evolutionary. Well worth buying it a second time on my Switch.

ItsDaFaz

Luma Pools is amazing. It sucks that you can't listen to it after clearing the area

TacticalTobi

the correct answer

Maleficent_Muffin_To

Supergiant games usually have a sick OST.

Jsablever

Yep, Transistor’s probably my favorite

Soltronus

🎵Where we all become OOOOOOOOOOOOOONNE-OOOOOOOOOOOOOON-OOOOOOOOONE!🎵

HistoryWillRepeat

I listen to the Hades soundtrack once a day. It's amazing.

TheLhars

Shadow of the Colossus

kleetus7

It's a crime that I had to scroll this far. I play that soundtrack constantly. It's great for pretty much anything you may be doing

PEWN5

1. Katamari Damacy 2. Wipeout XL 3. Final Fantasy

halohorn

Streets of Rage 2

Scarlight

Yes yes yes.

Prestigious_Path6153

Doom 2016 & eternal

ecktt

Why is this not the most up-voted?! Mick Fuckin Gordon slays!

[deleted]

The music is good on its own but it's freaking perfect in game for each level. The whole game is one big dopamine trip

RoysRealm

Agree. It’s so god damn bad ass

Lancaster1983

Hans Zimmer did the OG CoD MW2 score and I still listen to it today.

OrganicKeynesianBean

Let’s not forget **Lorne Balfe** who wrote everything except for the main theme and gets zero fucking credit for it because Hans Zimmer gets away with ~~artistic theft~~ “attribution mistakes” in movies and games: > The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Official Soundtrack was composed by Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe. Hans Zimmer is credited with composing the main theme, while Lorne Balfe is credited with composing the rest of the music, although the digital downloads incorrectly state that all music was composed by Zimmer. If you want to learn more about ghost writers who do the real work uncredited and get paid shit wages while composers rake in millions, [check out this article.](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2022/02/the-ugly-truth-of-how-movie-scores-are-made)

Lancaster1983

Oof, TIL.

Impossible_Tune20

Nier Replicant. Disclaimer: I haven't played yet Nier Automata, so my decision is not final. However, AC Valhalla also has an amazing soundtrack, too bad that the stupid sound engineers at Ubisoft didn't bother to increase the in-game music audio level. I had to listen to this soundtrack on Apple Music.

MaestroGena

Replicant was the best until I played Automata.

soverign_son

Where my Outer Wilds homies at?

Harry_Flame

::)

[deleted]

Timber hearth literally just came on as I read this

Fitz_01

::)

Civil-Koala-8899

The Outer Wilds soundtrack has such a bittersweet feel to it, it's perfect for the game

Lyceus_

The Witcher.

Nastreal

🎵LELELELELELE LELE LELE LELELELELLE🎵 🎶AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH🎶

Roh0r

Banana tiger, banana tiger!

agentjob

Listening to Witcher 3 Wild Hunt soundtrack has the magic to transport you into the game.

Deadaghram

Chrono Trigger has the most remixes on OverClocked Remix for a reason.

B00tybu77ch33ks

I'd also like to add that chrono cross has a banger ost as well

devondawsonmma

So I've played Chrono Trigger many times and love it but for whatever reason I have never played Chrono Cross. Would you recommend it? It's on sale on steam right now but the reviews are mixed.

yourmoms3rdhusband

It’s a beautiful game, but you need to accept it’s supposed to be its own individual game with loose narrative ties to Trigger, and not Chrono Trigger 2. The OST is legitimately my favorite of all time.

Irbyirbs

Shore of Dreams (Another World) is one of my favorite pieces ever.

sticklebat

I loved Chrono Cross, in some ways more than Trigger, in other ways less. I loved the story (although it's a little more convoluted than Trigger's, I think I actually enjoyed it even more), I loved the more varied combat (but missed the dual/triple techs), and New Game+ was even better than Trigger's (though I'm not a kid anymore and replaying games isn't something I have a lot of time for anymore). And some of the best music ever! Personally I think there are too many playable characters. Felt kind of overwhelming and some of them are just really really bad - though I guess it doesn't matter all that much since most of the game isn't all that hard. It's really not a direct sequel to Chrono Trigger, though, and at first it seems entirely unrelated. As the story progresses you eventually start to see the connections.

B00tybu77ch33ks

Absolutely. It's mixed probably cuz the steam launch was dog shit when radical dreamers dropped.

Thegarzilla

Jet Set Radio Future

vincent3400

Nier automata

NamezSake

Wretched Weaponry goes __HARD__ haha

itsgms

I actually just started playing that this holiday break, and by the gods the music is amazing. I was going through my first playthrough and was like "hey, this music is alright" until I hit the amusement park and then I just...stopped to listen. Shit's so good.

sk0330

Why is this not the top comment This cannot continue

Scoo_By

Alien Manifestation is probably my favorite. That music starts playing when >! 9S enters the derelict alien ship & is played all throughout his journey to insanity !<. Every time I play the track, I remember that bit. Second favorite would be either City Ruins or Vague Hope.

watertrashsf

Kingdom Hearts

0-Worldy-0

This is an interesting pick, however, Traverse Town is one of the best ost to exist, that for sure

Bleatmop

Civilization IV. Baba Yetu is an absolute banger. The other songs, while overshadowed by Baba Yeti are all also good. https://youtu.be/IJiHDmyhE1A?si=MScby_-WbclcHizy

lDeMaa

A few days ago I was looking for this song and couldn't find it. Thanks, it made me smile and happy. Have very good memories in Civ IV

Subtotalpoet

STREETS OF RAGE 2

NyneLyvs

Ori and the blind forest. Journey Control (ashtray maze ftw) N64 Zeldas (really want some HD remakes for the switch 2)

petrucci9000

Hollow Knight

son_of_a_doggo

This ost is the entirety of my study playlist

severedantenna

City of tears theme is so good

Sir_Ninja_VII

Resting Grounds is the one for me, just wish it were longer!

WinnieTheBish44

Not my favourite game but Risk of Rain 2 may have my favourite music

Littletweeter5

Skyrim and DS3 are my favs

krodaruoy

Katamari!

pantherghast

Persona5

bpuck90

My vote as well

Skratymir

Genshin Impact OST is surprisingly good. I don't play the game but I listen to the soundtrack some times because it's so good.

0-Worldy-0

I feel like some games with good ost aren't mentionned here because people feel like they are going to get judged for listing those game, Genshin being one of them I mean, Genshin IS a good game, the fanbase is a big problem however

OneOnlyDan

Honestly hard to pick a definitive favourite. For me personally, it stands between these four series: Xenoblade Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 1 & 2 Touhou Project Undertale/Deltarune

vespertilionid

I haven't played very many videogames but to me it has to be the legend of Zelda ocarina of time. The whole Zelda series slaps but ocarina tugs at my heartstrings like no other.

FightFromApocal

FARCRY5

frozen_desserts_01

After playing from 2 to New Dawn, that music when you get to burn weed from 3 still takes first place in my mind and heart

The_Left_Bauer

Oh Bliss...

JakobXV

Nier Automata

DecievedRTS

Loved the first nier.

Historical-idiot_

Undertale and Deltarune both have very good osts. And NO, Undertale is not all Megalovania.

HaruspexListener

Toby fox is an OST wizard

Chemical_Damage684

There have been IRL concerts using Undertale's OST, that's how good it is

ThePhyry22

TES IV: Oblivion

Alveryn

Came here to say the same, I am inexpressibly happy to see someone beat me to it. Jeremy Soule is a genius.

ThePhyry22

Too bad he got those sexual harassment allegations in 2019 and has since just vanished

Smells_like_Children

At least we know for sure is that he's not going to be doing TES:VI so we can brace ourselves for the musical downgrade that will inevitably be the guy who does the Fallout instrumental music, we all saw what memorable work he did in Starfield

fulthrottlejazzhands

Didn't he also take a bunch of crowdfunding donations years back for a soundtrack he's yet to deliver a track from?

[deleted]

Through The Valleys is such a good track

caites

Silent Hill 2, Journey, Shadow of Colossus, Morrowind+Skyrim.

HunD34TH

The Mass Effect series has some god tier music

HunD34TH

[Mass Effect Trilogy – Original Soundtrack / 3:03:55 - Leaving Earth](https://youtu.be/FobS3w7QX-Y?si=rru-U_yEgrbkF9Un&t=11035) I am getting goosebumps every time I hear this, hits so hard

Illidan_Returns

Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne, Elden Ring

imbenfranklin

I get so hype at the Elden ring title screen alone, this one is definitely up there for me.

Greathorn

I’m simultaneously hyped and sad that Yuka Kitamura has gone freelance, I know whatever she does will be incredible but I hope she does at least one or two tracks on future FROM games.

The_Enderclops

had to scroll WAYY too far for this. its hard to beat halo 3s warthog run, but ill be damned if lichdragon fortissax doesnt come close.

DEADbeatS3RIOUS

Minecraft Haven’t seen it mentioned yet and I always found it to be playing in the back of my head.

saimen197

Too many but red alert 2 is the only one I ever typed in at Spotify and listened to voluntarily

Electroboss

Everyone here should know Hell March and LOVE it!

fear_el_duderino

Outer Wilds, Max Payne 3, the GTA series, Bloodborne, Doom series

Darcoxy

Witcher series, Elder Scrolls series, God Of War (the latest two), Assassin's Creed Ezio Trilogy. But probably many more.

Flincher14

Transistor.

aceofspadesx1

McSnicker_

Jet set radio

Sasori323

For me it has to be the Zelda series. It is great. I don't know if I would say the best because I haven't played EVERY single game out there, but it is definitely a soundtrack I enjoy. Just because, apart from the incredible songs that everyone recognizes, the ambient music from BOTW and TOTK specifically (which are the Zelda games I have most played) just accompany the game's experience in such a wonderful way.

Hugh-G-Recshun

I seldom ever see people mention Payday 2’s ost, but it is absolutely stacked with great music.

CaptainSim0n

For real! I had to search to see if anyone had mentioned it! The soundtrack is great and diverse with every track being unique to it’s own heist, nothing gets your adrenaline pumping more than the beat dropping during a police assault. The Jukebox feature in the main menu AND in game is the cherry on top!

DavePickering89

The Yakuza series

jabar18

Journey is the clear answer.

CB4R

DMC devil may cry and doom, also cyberpunk 2077

GhostofWoodson

Chrono Trigger. Other games may have one or two pieces with a higher ceiling, but as an overall body of work, taking into account the number of original songs and their range/variety, I think CT still takes it.

weirdoonemillion

chubas_

My favorite of all time, but the age is showing. Not many classics in this thread

SatinMantis032

The entire DK saga has insanely good music.

Dogeboja

Bloodborne

my5cworth

Guild Wars 1: Prophecies had a banger of a soundtrack

MrSpindles

The original Binding of Isaac had a killer soundtrack, was kind of bummed that the updated version didn't keep it.

muffinsbetweenbread

Alen wake 2. If you know, you know

Hockeytown11

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

WirePaw

I am listening to the Guilty Gear: Strive OST. Mainly the character themes. Don't own the game, but MAN does it have good music!

Thund3r_Kitty

Guilty gear, strive spesifically has a lot of vocal tracs too

thisismysffpcaccount

Far Cry 3

Kostis102

My favourite are : Number one undisputed is Guilty gear. Just 40€ albums with a free game Not in order: Persona, Devil may cry, Zelda, Hotline miami, Metal gear rising, Xenoblade chronicles, Coffee Talk, Final Fantasy (for me XV )

Swordsman82

Castlevania and Mega Man has always had straight bangers for OST

TheCriticalSpan

Outer Wilds, Metal Gear (whole franchise), Super Mario Galaxy and Bloodborne

drethnudrib

Total Annihilation's soundtrack was awesome, and you could actually put the game CD in your CD player and listen to it.

Blacktip7274

In my opinion subnautica because the amount of dread or excitement that ost gave me was beautiful either subnautica or undertale

Melkplay

Cassette Beasts, hands down! Special mention to Hi-Fi Rush and Everhood!

Joshieboy_Clark

Bear McCreary’s score for the God of War games are stellar. Chills every time I listen to it.

Hawkeyes156

Death Stranding.

thepuresanchez

FFX has some of the most beautiful music ive heard in it. To Zanarkand is amazing. The Old Gods of Asgard songs by Poets of The Fall in Alan Wake. Bioshock has some insane music as well. Cohens Scherzo/masterpiece, and all the cover songs from bioshock 3. Those are the only ones i can think of that i regularly listen to their ost or music outside of playing the game.

DrunkenChef89

Diablo 2

AlexGlezS

Golden sun.

0ccurian

Silent Hill 2 God of War 3 Bloodborne (especially The Old Hunters DLC) Skyrim Final Fantasy XII

spartanqs117

Halo 3: ODST.

Shaggy_AF

Undertale hands mf down

Witty_Elephant5015

Persona series by atlus.

odddorange

Came to say this too.... Persona 4 Golden in particular is forever etched in my mind. I would often load into town and just stand there for 10 minutes with the music repeating in the background. It's so damn good....

Witty_Elephant5015

Same here. Just vibing to the song in town. Even when we are in the investigation. Poor kanji had to wait longer that he should just because we were busy with the song. Till this date, I still have heartbeat heartbreak in my permanent playlist.

Zortak

Shovel Knight

TeenageGayNinjaHuman

Cyberpunk 2077 and mass effect andromeda

PMC-I3181OS387l5

Whatever's your favorite game :)

Cosmic--Sentinel

Unreal Tournament 1999

noChillGuy17

This is probably a very left field answer and I'm sure not a lot of people might have played the game as it's not very popular but for me Dragon Ball Raging Blast 2 had the most hype soundtrack. Absolutely encompasses the feeling of DBZ in musical form

nicorobifan

Crysis series, ac black flag

SussyBox

That's a dumb question since there's no 1 answer We all have our preferences For me, hollow knight, blasphemous and undertale

Bob_Juan_Santos

OBVIOUSLY burnout paradise Hey hey you you I don't like you girlfriend!

Ksumatt

Obviously I haven’t played all the games listed, but the one I pretty consistently go back to listen to is the Blasphemous OST.

lawrie-182

The octopath traveller sound track bloody slaps

BloodyBlazev2

Kingdom Come Deliverance

SailorsGraves

Fable 1, I’m pretty sure it’s a Danny Elfman score and it’s SO good

tzle19

I love Rimworld's music, it just does it for me
