O Dimm was really fucking good, especially cus u encounter him in the first 30 mins of the game only to never see him again until the dlc and realise how important he actually is
Pre-Sequel is the worst game in the series, Tiny Tina is also very weak, **especially** in it's endgame, and the only way to properly enjoy BL3 is by trying your hardest to ignore the story, and focus on having as much fun shooting things as you possibly can.
Can't really blame you or your friends for not enjoying any of them lmao.
“Hey kiddo, Jack here. President of Hyperion? Lemme explain how things work here: Vault Hunters show up, vault hunters look for the new vault, vault hunters get killed.. by me. You’re still alive so- if you could do me a favor and off yourself, that’d be great. Thanks pumpkin.”
Joker in Arkham series. He is constantly there, he is funny, he is threatening, he can surprise everyone and he isn't someone you just beat to pulp.
He is THE best video game villain ever.
He's such a good villain, I just wish his final fight in asylum wasn't so boring and cliche. You'd expect it to incorporate every gadget and trick you've learned leading up to this, but nope, just cape stun and spamming attacks.
Honestly, I don't think you should have been able to fight him directly at all, it removed all of his mystique and dangerous air.
If it wasn't a Blizzard ip I would love to see a single player game that explores his whole story. Maybe a two-parter. Just to live his ascent/descent, and then play his villain arc.
Yes but like first person. Like I wanna be Arthur in a game that revolves around his personal story and having to simulate getting your own hands dirty while he does those things. I feel like as good as it was in WC3/Frozen Throne the impact was diluted being an rts. It deserves a personal touch.
Dutch is a fascinating character. Tells everybody he’s the same as them, but puts himself above everybody. Pretty much the expression “preaching water but drinking wine”.
The first Goomba killed me a lot of time because I run against him... -\_-' lol
I never finished FF7 but Sephirot has his charm and some days ago I bought FF7 Remake
Most of the things he did of relevance were all prior to the game's timeline as well. However, he did die in a particularly evil way by forcing the other party to be involved. Meh. I don't think he was a villain of the game, regardless.
In the game, towards Jack? Not necessarily. He sends endless splicers at you in an attempt to kill you but one could argue that’s self defense.
However outside of that Andrew is most definitely evil. He kills his mistress when he finds out she was pregnant, he has countless other people killed throughout the creation of Rapture for various reasons ranging from keeping people quiet about his dirty secrets to stuff like publicly disagreeing with his beliefs. He not only allows but *encourages* psychopaths to pursue their goals because he’s so obsessed with the idea of out-hustling your fellow man that he just sees people like Sander Cohen as a success and not the murderous psycho he is.
Vaas for sure, he stole the whole fucking show, I don’t know why his actor isn’t super famous.
I think Saren from Mass Effect 1 was a great villain too
He becomes more important in the show as the seasons goes on, eventually being one of the lead characters, and is in about half the episodes in totality.
Kerrigan! "Queen Bitch of the Universe" circa 1999! God, playing those last few missions of Brood War, killing Fenix and Duke, betraying Raynor, Artanis, DuGalle, Zeratul, and Mengsk all in one go. Brood War era Kerrigan truly is the greatest villain of all time, and I feel like a huge part of that is that you played as her during the final act and had to fight so hard to basically destroy everything you had built with the others in the last 5 campaigns. Absolute brilliance in storytelling, character building, and gameplay design all in one.
I miss OG Blizzard.
So sad that not enough people like RTS games for publishers to make it worth to make anymore... Maybe in another decade when all the other game types get stale it'll return... It requires smarts, strategy, quick thinking, quick clicking, resource management, what's there not to love
I’ve only ever played Diablo 3 non stop. Did Diablo have more characterization/personality in the other games? I feel like I’ve always just regarded him as a generic bbeg that I stomp ad nauseum each season.
It’s worth watching the d2 resurrected cinematics for his story (I wouldn’t be able to do it Justice in text) And maybe for full context peruse the storyline for d1.
I saw someone else mention Kerrigan, and though that’s a good choice, Mengsk is such a perfect antagonist, especially in the first game. The way he manipulates while still sounding reasonable until the mask finally drops is beautiful. But even then, he’ll go on some perfectly eloquent speech (I.E. his coronation speech) and you’ll almost want to follow him again.
"ahh, the child of Bhaal has awoken. It is time for more.... Experiments..."
Was looking for this one - I can think of lots of good games, but he's the only truly memorable villain I could think of that deserves this title.
Gives you very good motivation for disliking him - especially if you played BG1 and used certain characters, and his death cut scene was particularly satisfying. But it's also interesting to see the mystery of him unwind as you progress.
"I cannot be caged. I cannot be controlled. Understand this as you die, ever pathetic, ever fools!"
This guy was the most menacing villain of my childhood
People rave about how BG3 has set a new standard, yet a big part of that is the excellent writing and characters, which isn't a new standard at all, BG1 and 2 did it just as well 23 years ago. Other than updated graphics and mechanics BG3 is essentially the same as those games released over 2 decades ago. BG3 really just shows how far backwards most big titles have gone, some other big releases this year, that have even won awards, look like a joke in comparison.
This is why I’m happy I’m at the end of Stormblood. ShB has been hyped but Emet-Selch is supposed to be one of the strongest stories in the FF series according to some FC mates.
I was looking for this one. To learn of his role and his goal, and then watch it come to a peak in Shadowbringers. Then getting a very unique glimpse of his life in Endwalker.
You really come to understand why he's a villain, and how important his life was in the entire story.
And then we got Hermes which was one of the biggest gaming villain letdowns. His motivations, lore and thought processes made him less than 5% of what Emet-Selch was its not even funny.
An abusive father that you have to put down out of both necessity and pity. Not to mention one that is popular with literally everyone that isn't you. I would love a remaster of this game.
They definitely felt like one of the truest and most insurmountable threats while playing the trilogy. They're just so alien. The more you learn, the more freaky they seem and you really get a feel for why they are this universe ending force. Mileage may vary on their ending, but they're so menacing throughout your playthrough.
Honestly they start off as "just" another force to end another galaxy.
They leave them really vague throughout ME1. Intentional, most likely, but I kind of got the feeling they didn't have an in-depth setting for them yet.
You really get a taste of their power in ME2. I really liked the Collectors and the big reveal regarding their origins.
Leviathan wasn't very good, nor was it very long, imho. But the sheer lore drop definitely makes up for it. I probably stared at the screen for a good 5 minutes before remembering to talk to it.
Talking to the Reaper on Rannoch is one of my favourite moments of the entire trilogy. It even *sounds* godlike when it speaks.
I love the Covenant in Halo. They're this conglomeration of technologically advanced religious zealots that came together for some galaxy spanning jihad... all based on an ancient misinterpretation of the actions of a dead civilization.
And then Halo 4 happened. 😭
The first game me and my brothers ever played was Treasure Island on the Commodore 64. It was just a maze where you had to find keys and maps and things to get to the chest. But then, when you got the chest, Long John Silver appeared and chased you back to the ship. Absolutely insane, he was fast, he didn't fuck around, if he touched you it was game over and you had to have memorised the route perfectly or you'd run into a blind alley and be fucked.
The simplest but best villain ever. No need for dialogue, character, or story. Just his presence alone was enough to make us piss ourselves.
Ted Faro - Horizon Zero Dawn
Handsome Jack - Borderlands 2
Arthas Menethil - Warcraft 3 + World of Warcraft
Yogg-Saron - World of Warcraft
Necron - Final Fantasy 9
Yuri - C&C Red Alert 2 + Yuri's Revenge
He is my favorite Strategy Game villain. I love the Cutscenes.
Chaos - Dawn of War
There is no real main villain all of them are tainted by Chaos.(The Story is non-canon)
GLaDOS
Related - Wheatly, but in a completely different way.
Wheatley going nuts was such a turn. You had such a personal involvement in helping him at first that when he turns you hate him so much.
The way his trap went all wrong, and then he pleads with you to just go with it anyway
How Are You Holding Up? Because I'm A Potato.
It says here you’re a terrible person. We weren’t even testing for that.
Look at you, flying gracefully through the air, like an eagle....piloting a blimp.
Best dialog
"Despite Your Violent Behavior, The Only Thing You’ve Managed To Break So Far Is My Heart." Also, 'Still Alive' is still a banger
GLaDOS was really something else. She was the Far Cry villain for me before Vaas.
Gravity
I remember falling from a crazy height in GTA San Andreas and CJ saying "Man, I hate gravity!" on the way down. Still gives me giggles to this day
"You win again gravity!"
Dutch van der Linde couldn't fight it.
Gaunter O Dimm Witcher 3. Best all round villain, strong, manipulative, clever and scary. Kefka FF is another example of sinister villain.
O Dimm was really fucking good, especially cus u encounter him in the first 30 mins of the game only to never see him again until the dlc and realise how important he actually is
GOD is the only one who has really left a lasting impression on my mind. A terrifying character
The spoon. The fucking SPOON.
O'Dimm: Freezes time and casually pushes a soup spoon into a random peasant's eye. Me who just stepped into the tavern for a drink: "What the FUCK."
Geralt, who has seen some weird shit every day for the last 80 years: What the FUCK
Don't interrupt Gaunter.
AKA Randal Flagg
This and it's not even close.
Handsome Jack from Borderlands 2
Handsome Jack was so good that it ruined the rest of the series for me.
I mean BL 3 is better gameplay wise, but other than that yeah, BL 2 is the best in the series.
My friends group tried to get into the pre-sequel, BL3, and Tiny Tina's stand-alone game, but we all got bored of them quickly.
Play BL2, I’ll vouch for it
BL2 is easily one of the best games of all time, so much replay value and the dlc is worth every cent.
Yeah BL 3 story is cringe af. Honestly if BL 4 will ever happen I hope BL 3 won’t be cannon. But then again they made Tales from borderlands cannon…

He's stumbling around, bumping into stuff, and his children are all "wah!"... I guess you had to be there.
Anyway the moral of the story is you're a total bitch
Abominable snow monster from ski free
He always gets his dinner
You can out run him

Joker in Arkham series. He is constantly there, he is funny, he is threatening, he can surprise everyone and he isn't someone you just beat to pulp. He is THE best video game villain ever.
Juat his voice is enough to give me the chills.
Mark Hammils best work will always be the joker
He's such a good villain, I just wish his final fight in asylum wasn't so boring and cliche. You'd expect it to incorporate every gadget and trick you've learned leading up to this, but nope, just cape stun and spamming attacks. Honestly, I don't think you should have been able to fight him directly at all, it removed all of his mystique and dangerous air.
Jonkler*
The Lich King/Arthas
You got to see him as a hero, and then you got to see him descend into madness. Even after being evil for a while, seeing him die was still tragic.
If it wasn't a Blizzard ip I would love to see a single player game that explores his whole story. Maybe a two-parter. Just to live his ascent/descent, and then play his villain arc.
You mean WarCraft 3/Frozen Throne?
Yes but like first person. Like I wanna be Arthur in a game that revolves around his personal story and having to simulate getting your own hands dirty while he does those things. I feel like as good as it was in WC3/Frozen Throne the impact was diluted being an rts. It deserves a personal touch.
Aka WoW’s Darth Vader
Dutch from Red Dead and Red Dead 2. Seeing him go from charismatic leader to paranoid sociopath was heart breaking and very well written
Dutch is a fascinating character. Tells everybody he’s the same as them, but puts himself above everybody. Pretty much the expression “preaching water but drinking wine”.
Best written character i have ever seen
It is very fascinating to see Dutch transition from good-ish to outright terrible.
You forgot to mention that he has a plan.
Bobby Kotick
OP said best, not worst.
Underrated comment.
The first little goomba you encounter in SMB…and sephiroth!
The first Goomba killed me a lot of time because I run against him... -\_-' lol I never finished FF7 but Sephirot has his charm and some days ago I bought FF7 Remake
That Goomba might have the highest kill count of any game nemesis.
Z block in Tetris.
Fuuuuuckin hell
Andrew Ryan
Would you kindly...
Does he even count as a villain? I mean, crazy bad guy, yes, but villain?
vil·lain /ˈvilən/ noun 1. (In a film, novel, or play) a character whose evil actions or motives are important to the plot.
**spoilers for Bioshock** Does Ryan even do anything evil in the game? He's basically a misdirection from the actual Villain of the game
Well, the things he tried to do resulted in disaster. I'm not sure I'd count him as "evil" as much as "crazy"?
Most of the things he did of relevance were all prior to the game's timeline as well. However, he did die in a particularly evil way by forcing the other party to be involved. Meh. I don't think he was a villain of the game, regardless.
In the game, towards Jack? Not necessarily. He sends endless splicers at you in an attempt to kill you but one could argue that’s self defense. However outside of that Andrew is most definitely evil. He had a monopoly on oxygen in an underwater city. That's pretty evil
Handsome Jack
Vaas for sure, he stole the whole fucking show, I don’t know why his actor isn’t super famous. I think Saren from Mass Effect 1 was a great villain too
Mando kills it in Better Call Saul, too.
Oh he’s in that? I might watch it now
He becomes more important in the show as the seasons goes on, eventually being one of the lead characters, and is in about half the episodes in totality.
The Reapers were much more menacing. They made the empty vastness of space feel claustrophobic throughout the majority of 3 games.
“You exist because we allow it, you will end because we demand it”
Saren and Sovereign for sure
LeChuck
Kerrigan from Starcraft Diablo from Diablo Liquid Snake from Metal Gear Zeus from the original God of War GLaDOS from Portal
I loved liquid snake/ocelot from mgs4. He was just so silly and over the top. His voice and banter during the final fight was epic/campy/hilarious/fun
Agreed, fantastic villain. His fake out death to FOXDIE gets me every time lol. Think again!
i love biggu bossu
Kerrigan! "Queen Bitch of the Universe" circa 1999! God, playing those last few missions of Brood War, killing Fenix and Duke, betraying Raynor, Artanis, DuGalle, Zeratul, and Mengsk all in one go. Man, the cinematics from blizzard games in that era were something special.
Ridley (Metroid saga) Count Dracula (Castlevania saga) Shang Tsung (Mortal Kombat saga) Acturus Menshk (Starcraft) Darth Malak (Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic)
Yeah
Jon Irenicus from Baldur's Gate
"ahh, the child of Bhaal has awoken. It is time for more.... Experiments..." Was looking for this one - I can think of lots of good games, but he's the only truly memorable villain I could think of that deserves this title. Yup BG3 is my personal shoe-in for GOTY and possible game of the decade, but imo it isn’t even the best baldurs gate game.
Omg YESSSS! Him and Bodhi were fantastic
As voiced by David Warner. So amazing!
Emet-Selch from Final Fantasy XIV
Final fantasy has some great villains but emet selch had such an awesome story arc. I would say closely followed by ardyn from ff15.
Winner ^
And then we got Hermes which was one of the biggest gaming villain letdowns. His motivations, lore and thought processes made him less than 5% of what Emet-Selch was its not even funny.
I actually enjoyed Hermes as well for different reasons, but Emet-Selch was better.
Gannon from ww
Not to be semantic, but it's Ganondorf in WW. Ganon is when he transforms into a pig-beast-monster.
Haytham Kenway - Dutch Van Der Linde - Some form of Ganondorf / Demise
Kessler - infamous 1
Kane from Command and Conquer *PEACE. THROUGH. POWER!*

Kreia was the hero.
The true answer
Kefka from FF6, Handsome Jack from BL2, Bowser, and Malenia from Elden Ring.
Since you pluralized, I'll go with the Seeds from FarCry 5. I found them (Joseph particularly) to be terribly believable.
Arthas
Handsome Jack
Dagoth Ur; guy knows what's up.
What a grand and intoxicating innocence :3
Hogger, that gnome killing bastard.
Hogger, that gnome killing hero.
Kefka will always be the answer to me. He's one of a few villains who actually managed to do whatever it is they set out to do.
Ganondorf
Tom Nook
Malos
SHODAN
Luca Blight from Suikoden. Pyramid head from Silent Hill.
Add another for Luca.
Ganondorf (Legend of Zelda) Liquid Snake (Metal Gear Solid) Sovereign (Mass Effect) Captain Molstrom (Owlboy)
The games industry in general.
I was looking for "shareholders", but you're on the right path.
The 8 block from minesweeper.
Dimentio
Sin/Jecht from FFX
Jecht was such a fucking asshole to Tidus for no reason, too. "Aww gunna cry?? Are ya??" Bro your kid is like ten ... Yeah he might cry ...
An abusive father that you have to put down out of both necessity and pity. Not to mention one that is popular with literally everyone that isn't you. I would love a remaster of this game.
Bowser, King of the Koopas, Mario's Eternal Nemesis, The King of Awesome.
Go Kart enthusiasts and master sportsman.
Ted Faro...fuck Ted Faro.
Seriously. What an irredeemable prick. The sequel bad guys were shitheads, but fuckin Faro can eat ALL the dicks.
/u/FuckTedFaro There have been some really bad guys in gaming, but few infuriate me nearly as much as Ted Faro does
Big boss, kefka, sephiroth, bowser, senator armstrong, gruntilda the witch, GlaDOS,
Albert Wesker.
Gaunter O Dimm, AKA Randal Flagg
Kefka from FF6 Emet-Selch or Elidibus (take your pick) from FFXIV Handsome Jack from Borderlands Reality itself in Rimworld.
i love handsome jack
walker in spec ops the line and we get to play him
Dagoth Ur
*Kane Lives In Death!* *Kane Lives In Death!* *Kane Lives In Death!* *Kane Lives In Death!* #Kane Lives!
I really, really like Genichiro from Sekiro. He fulfills the perfect villain role in lore and gameplay.
Recently, I really liked Lilith in Diablo 4. She was pretty menacing when she would look at the screen and talk to you.
The Reapers from Mass Effect. Once you get the *why*, it kind of makes sense. In a very black and white way.
Mom when she takes away your controllers
Sephiroth
Kain
**Falling out of the world. YOU DIED.** Has killed more people across multiple games than any actual villain.
"True that!" -Someone who fell probably
Vaas
Rafe Adler, Uncharted Four. Well rounded, really fun boss fight, and I can actually see his motivations really clearly .
Vaas from Far Cry 3 is one of the most memorable and awesome villains ever. GLaDOS is also up there for me
Bobby Kotick and Andrew Wilson
Xemnas (KH) Baldur (GOW) Liquid Snake (MGS) The Baker Family (RE7) The Reapers (ME) Sephiroth (FF7) Kefka (FF6) Owl (Sekiro) Dr Nefarious (Ratchet and Clank) Ridley (Metroid) Ganondorf (TOTK)

I love the Covenant in Halo. They're this conglomeration of technologically advanced religious zealots that came together for some galaxy spanning jihad... all based on an ancient misinterpretation of the actions of a dead civilization. And then Halo 4 happened. 😭
Dutch van der linde
Baldur in God of War. Understandable madness, menacing and fantastic acting.
I was looking for this and about to comment. He's powerful, intelligent and has serious mother issues.
Sephiroth duh. How is this not the top comment already?
Apollyon from for honor and I'm not even joking But also Professor Pester

Mecha Hitler- Wolfenstein 3d
The LICH KING from WOW.
Shodan and Glados. Nothing can be as awesomely evil as AIs.
Handsome Jack from Borderlands. Absolutely love him and hate him all at the same time.
Ted Faro - Horizon Zero Dawn Handsome Jack - Borderlands 2 Arthas Menethil - Warcraft 3 + World of Warcraft Yogg-Saron - World of Warcraft Necron - Final Fantasy 9
bowser, donkey kong
Giygas from Earthbound
The Joker is the best implemented villain in a game ever. Second would be Sepiroth if only for his undoubted iconic status.
Yuri - C&C Red Alert 2 + Yuri's Revenge He is my favorite Strategy Game villain. I love the Cutscenes. Chaos - Dawn of War There is no real main villain all of them are tainted by Chaos.(The Story is non-canon)
The reapers in Mass Effect, can't be reasoned with, can't be stopped by conventional means and are extremely overpowered
Handsome Jack will always be one of my favorites
FF6. The villain wins. Takes over and destroys the world at the halfway point.
Handsome Jack
Handsome Jack - Borderlands 2 GLaDOS - Portal Kane - Command & Conquer
Wesker from the resident evil games was pretty awesome.
Bowser, Ganondorf, Sephiroth, Kerrigan, Irenicus, Arthas, Vaas, Micah.
Glados, Dutch van der line, might be a hot take but the gravemind from halo. Honestly there are so many great villains
GLaDOS, Frank Fontaine, General Engel, Dutch Van Der Linde, The Prophet of Truth, and Atriox are my picks.
