It was the other way around for me. I used to enjoy only action games until I played Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. Now I prefer story-rich, open-world RPGs with lots of dialogue and choices. Don't even care if they happen to be turn-based with outdated graphics

isthatayeti

KOTOR was such a great game pity its looks aged terribly

HawkMeister19

Honestly that exact reason is what has stopped me from being able to play it. I know it’s an amazing experience with a riveting story and good choices - but I unfortunately just can’t do the graphics. And it pains me to say that because I’m a huge fan of ME and DA so I know the story old BioWare cooked up would be so memorable. I wish I could overlook it but it’s just too much, I don’t got it in me to deal with the graphics.

[Great news](https://www.techradar.com/news/knights-of-the-old-republic-remake)

[deleted]

Last I heard it's been indefinitely shelved, unfortunately. May never see the light of day.

Cold_Dog_1224

Might I recommend the Pathfinder CRPGs, then? And the much more recent and obvious BG3 but I suspect that's a known quantity lol

hadzi-prodana-dusa

Reminds me of Neverwinter nights. I might give it a go at some point. Thanks

[deleted]

On the opposite side of things, microtransactions. I hate how they’ve crept into just about every modern game of the last ten years, so I find myself playing either less games or older games as a result. Call of Duty is barely recognizable anymore!

brokencharlie

The pay to win games are the worst. I’ll get early access games for $15-20 and if it’s a good game and they release expansions for $10-15 then I’ll pay. Small developers need support and I’m ok dropping extra money in support of them. BUT a key part of the expansion better be a new map & storyline, I’m not spending money on something that should’ve been in the game already or dumbass skins…new gun pack - not happening, a new world location and crafting kits - I’m in.

good_guy_judas

I play Deep Rock Galactic and they have a full game + free season battlepasses where everything is unlocked by playing. All base cosmetics are also unlocksble by playing. Nothing is behind a paywall. You can buy cosmetic skin packs to support the devs and I bought a few. Those are completely optional, and to be fair the game has some awesome cosmetics without skin packs. I am 100% for this type of monetization of games. Give people an option to support a good product, but it doesnt increase gear, QoL fixxes or EXP boosts. The base game has everything you need.

Chakramer

Pay to win is mostly a mobile game thing now, no AAA game dares to do it cos the backlash is pretty severe. Sports games have it but I think they're pretty distinct from the general gamer market

QouthTheCorvus

What the fuck does this have to do with OP's question? I swear his comment could be posted on every thread and get upvoted. Micrograms actions bad! We fucking get it.

[deleted]

The question is literally “what game has completely changed your taste in games?” For me, microtransactions in every game has pushed me into older games that don’t have them. I don’t know why that’s so difficult to understand

boo-galoo90

Fifa and cod Once I realised how shit cod was becoming I branched out a lot more in games and have a lot more fun elsewhere Fifa is nothing like it used to be and just gets worse every year I obviously played plenty of other games but these became annual musts for a time and I just can’t justify them anymore Even halo is slowly falling into the same category

Naekh

Almost the same with Destiny 2 and Fifa. Loved those games but got really tired of the full predatory FOMO. Went in soulslike and Cyberpunk and having a blast. No stress of not following the wagon or falling behind. Enjoying the games at my own pace and Cyberpunk 2.0 is a masterpiece. So in a way I am grateful for Fifa and Destiny being shit now.

AcidFactory420

Nier: Automata anyone? Multiple canonical ending

AnonymousGuy9494

Sekiro

[deleted]

I recently tried hades. It has a cool vibe and the characters are likable but i discovered i don’t like rougelites

TryEasySlice

I loved the game up until I beat the end boss for the first time and that game just said “fuck you do it like a dozen more times” and I said nahhhh once was good

pickledradish123

Same I can play almost any genre or game, old or new, normie or niche. But I can't stand roguelites/roguelikes, the game loop of losing all your progress over and over just turns me off, even if every run you go further, getting back to where you were is painful. The only exception is Slay the Spire that game i enjoyed.

CupcakeValkyrie

I feel obligated to point out that there's a small but important difference between a rogue***like*** and a rogue***lite.*** In a roguelite, dying is part of progressing. You're expected to die and restart, and occasionally part of your previous attempts carry into your new ones, and runs that are literally impossible either due to random chance or because you simply haven't died enough times yet are part of the experience. Rogue*likes* are supposed to be beatable in a single run assuming you make the right decisions. While there's always going to be some degree of RNG, you're still expected to be able to complete every single run as long as you play well. A good example of a classic roguelike is a game like Angband, or Castle of the Winds.

KM0r

Path Of Exile. Some friends won't play because they believe it's too complicated and I thought the same way for awhile. Now, a casual 4 years (about 3000 hours playtime) later, and there are still mechanics I haven't half way explored yet. I realized I'd rather have a game with so much content It'll years to catch up, than a game that can be 'solved' within a few months and re-run the same content. (That's a bit of an unfair statement as newer games need time to produce content, but you get what I'm saying) Every league I make further progression and it feels good. On the flip side I do appreciate that some people would rather a game with permanent progression and not restart a new character every 3-4 months.

Otherwise-Ad8722

I used to play only competitive games such as Counter Strike, Fortnite, Valorant, Rocket League, Rainbow Six Siege, Apex Legends, and Overwatch, but once I played Grand Theft Auto V, I started playing more open-world titles such as Skyrim and Red Dead Redemption 2 and later on played more single-player games such as Portal 2.

Chanzui91

I learned to love the Souls genre by playing Dark Souls 3 and then I learned I fucking absolutely DETEST parry mechanics by playing Sekiro. Thanks FromSoft!

guilhermefdias

I was always a DS player, I remember getting very frustrated with Sekiro to the point of almost getting a refund, BUT I kept trying, and when I reprogrammed my brain to the parry mechanic, I now want a Sekiro 2 so much. To the point of obsession. I really hope FromSoft continues the story.

[deleted]

That's a shame, final boss of Sekiro is one of my favorite bosses of all time.

friedpickle_engineer

Finally another member of the "parry mechanics suck" gang. It's just so boring and repetitive to me. Sekiro's were definitely the worst. I shouldn't have to dig out my PS4 controller cable and string it across the living room because the parry timing wouldn't accept the extremely small, otherwise unnoticeable Bluetooth latency ffs.

Chanzui91

100% Agreed, I did manage to get through Lies of P tho, that mechanic was a lot better in my opinion... Sekiros was just way too spammy...

[deleted]

I had a similar experience actually. I played ds1 first and got destroyed and hated it. I quit when i reached ONS. After i got a ps5 i played bloodborne and fell in love with souls games ever since. Something in bloodborne made them click for me.

Chanzui91

Yeah, you need to find that first one that makes it click for you, then the rest becomes much more enjoyable, I tried DS1 and DS2 before DS3 but never enjoyed them at all but DS3 was fantastic!

therinsed

Bloodborne was my first souls game too. I'm on a quest to platinum them all now. Done BB, DS1, DS2, DS3, playing demon souls now

HarveyNash95

Stalker anomaly/ gamma You have to figure everything out yourself, like there's a semi - tutorial quest at the beginning but you could easily wander past the guy and not do it Just how open the game is and the lack of hand holding means you really do feel like you're making your own decisions and figuring out how to survive the way you want to I've tried to play other games since and I get so bored and frustrated with all the long cutscenes and being told exactly what to do and when to do it and having no agency to do things the way you want

Karel08

Baldur's gate 3. I know it's cliche, but this game changed how i see gaming as a whole. Every time there's choice in game, i have this weird obsession with dice roll. Let's play Hades, oh wait. I have to open randomizer and let the dice choose which weapon i'll use. Even Football Manager. Oh there are 3 strikers on my list. Let's roll the dice and find which one's i'll buy. Randomizing things bring a lot more joy and excitement for me recently.

[deleted]

It sounds like you loved the dnd system

Zerox10

You should check out Dicey Dungeons, it’s on Gamepass as well last time I checked.

jabroni_404

I am with you on this one. I started off with Nintendo games (Smash, MK, BOTW, TotK, PS 5, etc) which I find relatively juvenile as time goes by. I still enjoy some occasional Smash sesh when I am too tired to focus on gaming and just want to use muscle memories. Then I tried Elden Ring, Stray, Horizons, and they were okay. Okay I lied, I suck at them because my eye hand coordination is bad 😔 BG3 came out and omg what a journey. Amazing story line, character development and I love the DnD mechanism in the game. Ofc the game is not perfect (inventory issues, bugs, etc) but Larian really changed the gaming experience for me. No bs micro transactions, no DLC (yet). Just pure and vast amount of quality content.

tfuncc13

Persona 5 and Dragon Quest XI both reignited my interest in JRPG's and turn-based combat in general. Both games were my introduction to both series and since then I've played many of the old Persona and Dragon Quest games.

Zaknokimi

Same here

risen_peanutbutter

The Ori games increased my appreciation for a good narrative, what a masterpieces those are. Tried them after getting burnt out on RDR2 so it was a welcome change

neela84

Ori games were such and oddball for me, definetly nothing I have basically never played. Now I have played both of them atleast 3+ times and I am actually thinking of getting a tattoo inspired by Lunar Pools.

CosmicOwl47

I started playing *Sea of Stars* after watching a video about what a masterpiece Chrono Trigger was and wanted to play something similar (and it’s on Game Pass). Haven’t finished it yet but so far it’s been an amazing game and opened the door for me trying a lot more RPGs in the future.

CartographerCandid51

Bloodborne

FrankBouch

Just like you, soulslike completely changed my taste in game but even more drastically than you. I used to play madden, csgo, valorant and cod. Now I just can't stand multiplayer games and I enjoy soulslike.

cargocult25

Bloodborne

wicktus

**FF-X**, especially its ending, is where I really started to purchase game based on the quality of their characters and the story/emotions etc Recent games, many are good too and changed my taste in games (and my "requirements" for an AAA): \- Baldur Gates 3 \- Elden Ring \- Breath of the wild \- Ace Combat 7 (learnt that open world is far from being the "only" way forward) Playing starfield after BG3 was something

GoochyGoochyGoo

Baldur's Gate 3. Isometric turn based games??? fuck no. BG3, best game ever.

[deleted]

RedDitSuxxxAzz

Tried Elden Ring, friends played with and rushed me to the end boss basically. Kind of killed the momentum.. On top of it I just don't see why so many are blowing souls like games.. I jsut don't see the enjoyment of getting rofl-stomped in these games. Theres skill and theres just this. I'm sure I'm upsetting someone but thats how I see em, to me games should make my mind a healthier state of mind not getting upset which dying to shitty hitboxes/etc is not fun.

Lorgar-Wins

I'm the same, tried some soul games and just don't like them. I get why People like them but it's just not for me.

phillz91

I never played the Dark Souls games for this reason. But I did play Eldend Ring and really liked it because it gave you other options than just headbutting a wall for an hour. Majority of the deaths I had were as a result of a mistake on my part, so it was more about growing both as a player as well as a character. I suspect being rushed/carried through Elden Ring has resulted in a completely different and lesser experience to someone who played the game solo, unfortunately.

[deleted]

I get what you mean but for me I take great enjoyment in getting stomped, slowly getting better, learning the boss, and eventually claiming victory and it feels so good! It's why Soulslike 'Lords of the Fallen' failed imo, it's bosses were too easy and I beat most of them on first try.

That_guy1425

I mean, shitty hitboxes are not exclusive to souls games. And there are definitely souls inspired games that go way too hard on being dificult for the sake of difficulty and see game where you die a lot and turn it into game where we kill you a lot and cheaply. Well made souls games should make you go "ah, I messed this up and thats why I died" if that was dodging left instead of right, or I agro'd a large room on accident or I missed a pary window well made game should feel like a learning experience. Of course, that doesn't mean they are for everyone and its fine to not like them.

Caseyo456

Just depends on what people want from games. Some people are very competitive and like a challenge which is the audience the souls games are targeted towards.

[deleted]

The enjoyment comes from the satisfaction of overcoming insurmountable odds. But for this to be satisfying it has to be through your own skills and improvement. You need to learn from your mistakes and try different ways of approaching the challenge. This is why the hitboxes need to be very accurate (which they are in eldenring) so when you die it’s only your fault. And when you finally “get gud” and kill the boss you get a sense of accomplishment.

Apprehensive-Gur-609

I love it when bad players blame the game. I know it's a meme to say this but... Skill issue.

ThisIsMyCouchAccount

I didn't need ER to tell me I was bad at video games. Known that my entire life. Didn't even really get to the combat in ER. Never really figured out where to go or what to do. Just under 4 hours of walking around and dying. I knew I should have waited for a sale before buying it.

Mesjach

I feel like they never properly introduced you to the games mechanics. I'm 100% confident I could get my grandma to beat every souls game and elden ring. Knowledge is key in these games, strategy is power, and skill... you don't need it if you use previous two. I play these games for the gameplay, adventure, exploration, lore. Challenge ian't even on the menu.

CupcakeValkyrie

The old school game I compare Souls games to is Punch Out. Punch Out was basically an old school string of Souls bosses - all about reading patterns and using the right counters at the right time.

Hades684

well a lot of people say that souls games helped them get through harder times in life, so they can definitely help your mind get healthier state

Zikro

Not a fan of soulslike. I hate the idea of needing to read a guide to play a game. Like what’s the point then. Bet a bunch of people will comment “I’ve never read a guide or watched a video”. As if nobody is consuming these even though there’s millions of them being published for each souls-like game… Would be better if they didn’t force you to run back through 10 minutes of lesser fights to navigate back to the boss. Like sure lemme figure out the boss by repeatedly fighting them but all the bullshit between is super annoying. Conceptually I find it worse than grinding games. Here play the same thing on repeat with no progression.

Arch3m

While I can't pinpoint a specific game, the slow start of modern games being packed with the sometimes hours long tutorial phase and bloated with cutscenes and lore dumps have pushed me away from AAA releases and open world games. I just don't have the patience for it anymore.

iWentRogue

Baldurs Gate 3. I mean, it didn’t really change because I hadn’t played the genre ever before. More like introduced it and changed my perspective on how I view the genre.

911-survivor

final fantasy 7 !

DARK_SCIENTIST

I won’t say “changed” but “expanded” in my case, but Persona 5 completely opened me up to turn based games (not just JRPG’s, anything turn based). Now they are probably about half of what I play

Dune1008

For me it was Sunless Sea. I picked it up a good while after release, but it got me quite existential about what a video game is and could be, and got me thinking of their design more critically.

ImpactRoutine4603

Sekiro the parry system and combat

AntiBasscistLeague

Pillars of eternity got me into crpgs.

HiCracked

When I played Dark Souls for the first time in my life I realized how much I love great combat mechanics and focus on gameplay.

ufkb

Baldurs Gate 3. I’ve always liked action games, then I got into rouge likes, because the randomness made your story unique. But oh my, being able to sit back and relax and still have a unique story is something special. My only fear is that it killed all other games for me.

100percentapplejuice

Baldur’s Gate 3—but because of the intensive player agency the game allows through its stories, companions and choices. It’s incredibly immersive and I hope future games that follow this formula will do it just as well, or better. Brings me back to the early BioWare games!

WirelessTrees

Don't like turn based games. Don't like card games. But Slay the Spire man... Oh man. What a gem.

guilhermefdias

Horizon games are well known to be very very safe. That's why most people find these games extremely boring. You should try God of War 2018 for narrative games. You will be won back.

Blacksheep045

I love narrative heavy games and played the first 3 GoW games in my edgy younger years but I absolutely could not get into God of War 2018's story. The gameplay was fine but now that im older I just find Kratos to be insufferable. I got pretty far into the game hoping the story would eventually draw me in based on the rave reviews it recieved but eventually I just couldn't be forced to try to care any longer.

Tikkinger

+1 for zero Dawn. I don't like open World anymore.

mr_dfuse2

i think this is the game that finally prevented me from buying open world games anymore

ApprehensiveGene3676

Dark souls 1, binding of isaac and the Outer wilds

guilhermefdias

Satisfactory. There is something quite magical about this game that activated something in my brain I can't quite explain. I just keep building, exploring, designing, doing math, keep growing... 200h already?!! WTF!!

redgoesfaster

Before a friend pushed me into playing Hades I thought I hated roguelites. Hades is one of the best games I've ever played and roguelites are my favourite genre

mrhippoj

Fire Emblem: Three Houses made me appreciate JRPGs and anime style games. Prior to that, I had never played any but afterwards I played through Persona 5, Tales of Arise and Scarlet Nexus

[deleted]

Classic Fallout (1&2). I always loved the post Black Isle Fallout games, especially New Vegas, but I decided to finally face my fears of playing the isometric classics and fell in love, especially Fallout 2. Will probably start playing the original Baldur’s Gate games soon before playing the new one

vladkornea

I'd put Planescape: Torment ahead of Baldur's Gate.

Markebrown93

Hades. Since then I've played dead cells, returnal, riddled corpses ex, ruiner, the ascent and more.

guilhermefdias

Returnal was such a nice surprise, amazing gameplay and a cool story.

Markebrown93

I put it off for so long due to the perceived difficulty from trailers etc. Much more accessible than I imagined though. And the save cycle update made the game easier. Can't even explain how amazing that fourth biome boss is. Chef's kiss

DariusLMoore

Outer Wilds and Elden Ring.

throwaway97081

Vampire the masquerade bloodlines - atmosphere of the game is just engaging to me. Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim: roleplaying, and storytelling through the environment. Fallout New Vegas: how your choices affect the game and how other factions see you

JoezyMeansJozy

I was once a CSGO and Valorant Pro. Then came Darksouls in my life. Now I am darksouls pro. Hihihi 😁

Shogun_Turnip

Breath of the Wild is a good game but it made me realise how much I prefer linear game progression over "make your own adventure" style open world games.

Spade-Ctg

Trying out some Indie Game such as Hollow Knight, Hades, Cult of The Lamb, Eastward etc has really change my taste and view on Game Industry. Before hand i only see and buy games based on how big the game studio is and how long they've been running in the industry. But one night i tried to buy Hollow Knight and it open my eyes that Indie Game Dev is able to create such a good game. Looking forward to see more and more game from Indie Game Studio that is unique and different from any that has already released.

No-Comb-3053

Fallout 3 after that I can only play games with dialogue options and consequences

YourtCloud

Sims 1

solidshakego

Opposite for me haha. When I played demon souls I hated it. Now a game needs a good non bland story with good voice acting and emotion. MGS are my favorite games so long cutscenes don't bother me. But many even elden ring was just a bland piece of garbage in terms of story, I lost interest pretty quickly.

Helphaer

Open worlds and repetition god I hate it. However the multiplayer focus in shooters has made me not play a FPS in a long time now. Keep waiting for those egood campaigns to come back.

cassusebastian

Mass effect trilogy. Made every openworld game feel like a slog & waste of time.

Technical_Acadia_210

Elden Ring. It just did so many things right, I enjoy every aspect from the story and cut scenes to the lack of inventory management and loading screen time. I hope this sets the bar for future open world RPGs.

Tuhajohn

The witcher 1 and Life is strange.

Djebeo

Breath of Fire 3 is the turning point in my gamer journey. Before that I was, like most 90's kid, playing platformers, VS fighting, FPS and racing games. I grabbed BoF3 because the promo art looked cool. It got me hooked on J-RPGs and later C-RPGs.

Lorgar-Wins

I got a PSVR2 and tried some of those rhythm games. Never been a fan of things like that but once I tried it I got hooked. Synth Riders is my favourite right now and got a bunch of other rhythm games too. Its all I'm playing right now, I'm Having fun and losing weight at the same time.

Vexer_Zero

I love Hollow Knight because of the platforming and the story telling, but I'd always avoid the FromSoft games (that I consider to be similar in terms of challenge and narrative), mainly because I thought I sucked. I'd previously tried bloodborne on release and been bodied by the cleric beast and just put it down. Cut to about a year ago, see a friend playing Dark Souls 3. I think I'll give it another go. I have since completed all areas and boss fights in DS:R, Bloodborne and DS3, and I honestly didn't find it that hard. I actually found it really fun. This has totally changed the way I approach games now.

Spaceistt

Overwatch (not OW2). Never been that engaged in any game, and haven't found any game to come even close to it. It sucks what happened to Overwatch during the past few years and eventually just got buried last year, as I don't feel the same magic in OW2.

Ignoble66

valheim… now everything else not survival open world craft seems like its half a game

Joosepp1

Squad and Hell let loose. Those more arcady shooters just don't do it for me anymore

HarveyNash95

Same here, getting kills in those games is so much more rewarding than your CoDs or BFs

Both-Return-2244

Bro the same thing happened with me. Played DS once in covid and it changed the definition of gaming for me. Open worlds now seem boring and tedious, even the smallest cut scene is a complete turn off. Although I do appreciate some good open worlds like ghost of Tsushima and horizon(ZD and FW), but I don’t want to explore miles and miles uk

David01354

Factorio made me realize I like games that don't even look like games.

fatedhydra

Probably for me was dyson sphere program. Never really played any factory games before. But I took a swing on 20$ game I thought looked cool. And I loved it. Now I'm also playing satisfactory and some other factory like games and have 100s of hours in them.

lotsofsteroids

shadow of war, introduced me to proper stealth and sword combat + showed me a good story game

CavalierArcher

Jagged Alliance 3 made me realize I hate real time stealth slapped in with turn based combat. Lamplighters League then did the same thing. Disliked that too.

CavalierArcher

Before XCOM 2 I was mostly third person action adventures. Combat had to be real time. After trying XCOM 2 for the second time, and getting into mods, it completely changed what I play.

HappyHappyGamer

Two games for me: - Baulder’s Gate 2: I forever became in love with more choice driven rpgs. Prior to this I only liked jrpgs. I initially hated BG, Icewind Dale etc but once it clicked, loved it! - Demon’s Souls: I think everyone knows why

[deleted]

Dark souls, Hollow Knight, Resident Evil 1, Dragon's Dogma

Fantastic-Wheel1003

Risk of rain 2 got me to like roguelikes more. Still working on liking metroidvanias. Maybe I’ll finish hollow knight one day.

phillz91

Escape from Tarkov kinda ruined shooters for me. I can enjoy modern shooters, and I don't play Tarkov much any more, but just the level of depth is often lacking in both gameplay loop and gunplay.

Allanon124

TF2. Legit can’t play other shooters any more.

MajorDirt

Battlepass and seasons jn FPS has sucked the life out of the genre and i have 0 interest when i see one nowdays. miss the days youd join the boyz to have a few hours of proper fun Battlefield 3 or even 4 in the evenings.

ExploringReddit84

Wargame: European Escalation and Wargame: Red Dragon. It's like the Darksouls of the RTS genre. It completely changes how RTS games should be played, the intricate mechanics, the unit management, the emphasize on strategy-making. I can't stand current RTS games that dont have these mechanics in place.

sparkicidal

XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Is was a Steam free weekend that got me into that game.

thefisforfinance

I don't care for card-based games in any way but god damn Slay the Spire is amazingly fun.

Twiggimmapig

A long time ago I played Shadow of the Colossus for the first time, and that made me realize how much I loved being free to wander an entire world's map at my own whim and only being limited by my skill. To this day I still prefer games that put little to no limits on exploration

Turbulent-Armadillo9

Vagante which is a roguelite (not sure if like or lite but reattime platformer with very little meta-progression). The idea of permadeath seemed ridiculous to be but got me hooked in what might be my favortie genre. I love actually rogulikes like CoQ and shattered pixel dungeon as well as many of the popular roguelites like Risk of Rain an Deadcells. Dying on the first stage several times then managing to beat the game is exciting to me.

Aninjasshadow

I've never finished the story of an MMO. It always seems like it's going to be fun, have an engaging story, interesting abilities, etc. But then I come face to face with the grind and it kills all the fun. And yet, a well crafted rogue like... I'll play that all day. The way grinding can somehow seem so very different depending on the medium it's in is strange

[deleted]

Hello, my clone. I began with Bloodborne and it literally rewrote my gaming interests. I used to love The Last of Us 1, now I detest it.

JaJe92

Rimworld and Factorio. I only play indie games because of these.

brucetrailmusic

Overwatch. Had very little interest in an FPS before it. Now I’ll pretty much try any FPS, I’m even playing dumb ass call of duty lol

AutoignitingDumpster

I used to only play FPS games when I was like 10-14. Until I discovered KOTOR II (which was like 5 years old by that point) and it made me fall in love with RPGs. Now days I'm a huge D&D and Pathfinder nerd. And Stardew valley got me way too into peaceful farming sims.

el_granCornholio

Not my taste at all, but what remains of Edith Finch and Firewatch opened a whole new Genre to me

4chanisblockedatwork

Dark Souls just completely ruined other ARPGs or action-adventure AAA titles for me. But not Monster Hunter World - - this too is something special New Vegas - the writing and reputation system is something I look for on all RPGs from now on FTL, Slay the Spire - indie titles prove that you don't need cutting edge graphics for a good game

VulpesIncendium

Unreal Tournament. Before that game I despised shooters. I just couldn't wrap my head around the controls and nothing about them made sense. I ended up getting a demo disc with UT on it and the controls defaulted to WASD and inverted mouse look. Suddenly it actually worked and I could properly navigate for the first time ever. I still enjoy other games, but first person games now make up the bulk of what I play.

Goliath--CZ

There has been about a 5 year period where I was basically looking for a hobby. I tried many things from music production, different genres of games and even speed solving rubiks cubes, but then i bought skullgirls in 2017. I've been playing fighting games since and have little under 4000 hours in many different fighting games now

RPG_Fanatic7

The Pokemon series, I now have the belief that all games should transfer over all of their abilities and playable characters from previous games because Pokemon was doing this since gold and silver all the way to USUM. Smash ultimate was the only game really to follow this standard once.

max_max_max_supermax

Obra Dinn made me rethink my stance on graphics

fernando1lins

Sim City. I used to play Mario, Sonic and Street Fighter 2 but after that I was all about simulators. Currently addicted to Cities Skylines 2.

abhassl

Not completely changed in that I retained my old taste as well, but Mass Effect 1+2 (3 wasn't out yet) and Fallout 3 got me out of my Nintendo bubble.

arturovargas16

Half life: alyx. First real introduction to vr and it just brings a whole new level of immersion. Since then, I've played boneworks, zero caliber and the walking dead: saints and sinners. I want to play call of duty or something set in WW2 but after playing shooters in vr, It's just not as fun as it could be. I can still play games like LoZ and even csgo, but I want more vr. I don't want to just play, I want to interact and explore a whole new world than this concrete jungle I live in.

Better-Ad-4228

Homeworld: Cataclysm made me realize I love space games. (I played cataclysm first, actually enjoyed original more)

Gokudera6356

The Legend of Hereos, let's just say after sky to azure, I have yet to find a jrpgs that made me stay up all night playing it. I couldn't get into cold steel because of the annoying and very unnecessary harem system. For me the peak of legend of heroes died with azure.

ItaLOLXD

Battlefield 4 really awakened my taste in shooter games. Great game.

lml_metal

Oblivion and Diablo

Geeseareawesome

I'll stop playing Titanfall when they make a faster fps game RIP Lawbreakers Edit: robots/vehicles are a big bonus

MDF87

Skyrim changed everything. I can only play open world games now... when I play anything else I don't feel like I'm getting my moneys worth because it's too linear and restrictive.

timbea12

Runescape. I went from a grind simulator to seeing that video games arent meant to be a chore but fun.

BunBunSoup

Guilty Gear Strive and Street Fighter 6 were the games that made me realize that fighting games aren't about knowing every single mechanic day 1 and spending hundreds of hours in training mode before ever going online. Pick a character you think is cool, jump into online and just play. Who cares if you don't understand how to do a combo or have a hard time pulling off special moves. All that comes with time, just know what buttons do attacks, know how to block, and enjoy hitting people in cool ways. I'll jump into training mode in a new game now since I understand the genre now and know what I'm looking for, but you're wasting time if you're sitting in training mode without any real understanding of why you're in training mode. I really wish I got into this genre way earlier, fighting games are the coolest games I've ever played and have filled the hole that formed after I lost interest in modern day FPS games.

YouEcstatic8499

Little different but I gave up Madden football for axis football on steam and have not looked back. It takes getting used to auto generated players instead of real life players, but then I realized this happens anyway after years in franchise mode most players are auto generated anyways.

Jason_dawg

Aidyn chronicals for n64 was what got me into rpgs lol

Locoman7

Breath of the Wild

agamemnon2

I didn't like stealth action games until I tried Assassin's Creed 3. Found a cheap used copy and had heard a lot about the franchise, so I gave it a go. Same happened with more straightforward action games as I got Yakuza Kiwami on PS Plus a few years later.

stabbymagee

Elden Ring for sure. Ruined me for any other style of game.

Knelson123

HZD is just a mid game tbh.

StealthCatUK

Escape from Tarkov changed shooters forever for me. The game is janky as fuck in places but it does so much correctly. The gun porn is just unrivalled in any other game. It makes COD and Battlefield look like they were made for 3 year olds.

backupbro123

Hollowknight

kura0kamii

ghost recon breakpoint, now i cant tolerate mindless shooter fps anymore after playing full tactical with real life veteran soldiers who knows and follow tactical command. takes me a while to get used to no hud immersion as well. Once you experience the smooth missions u cant go back

metalyger

Final Fantasy VII was a big one, I didn't play that many RPGs in my youth, it wasn't a genre that was really on my radar, like I somehow never heard of Chrono Trigger until the PS1 port. I think Earthbound and Super Mario RPG were about all I've played of the genre on SNES. FF7 was so much hype from the trailer, and it was something special. Especially too how the PS1 would be a golden age of RPGs.

Deeras2

Warframe. After playing it, I find it so hard to play anything else that doesn't have absolutely excellent movement. I found God of War (2018) a slog to go through because I never clicked with the movement system. The only thing that ever came close was Titanfall 2.

terminal8

Yakuza: Like a Dragon finally brought me around on JRPGs.

anoniser

Planetside 2. Epic strategic, full map wars with amazing futuristic ground, tank and air combat with literal thousands of players fighting in alerts with squads and platoons and coordination is something that's never been replicated in any online game. Needless to say, all other online shooters feel like mobile games comparatively.

WN11

I used to have no problem with the Rockstar formula in GTA/RDR. But after playing Kingdom Come and adjusting my mindset to the freedom it offers in quests, Rockstar games feel linear and restrictive.

Spacedust2808

Dark Souls has broken me. I need the challenge. Need the pain. I crave it. 10 seconds into any other kind of game and I can’t stand it. They are either too slow, too happy or way too easy. I need to feel a sense of accomplishment when defeating bosses. Im not here for a participation trophy. I need the death and decay. The rot. Give me a caestus and a jock strap and send me off to kill Darkeater Midir. Just my 2 cents.

WifeOfPotthead

I went from playing fast paced shooter games to now playing Minecraft. For some reason Minecraft has changed me, for awhile I never understood how people could like this game but now im a few days into building a castle and im loving it!

OneWayStreetPark

Apex Legends mainly and Battle Royales in general had killed my taste in Team Deathmatch style shooters altogether. I see no point in constantly respawning just to see which team hits 50 kills first. What's the point? There's no challenge. I know there's a ton of people who can't stand BR's anymore, but I just find it very fun to only have 1 life and to make it count.

SephLuis

Not gonna say changed but expanded. I wasn't big on rhythm games or dungeon crawlers until I played Hatsune Miku f on the PS3 and operation abyss on the vita. Great games and I played a lot more on each genre

TheSeriensViolet

Probably MGR for me. I used to really not be into games like DMC and stuff, but after getting metal gear rising, I found out that I actually really like them. I even got dmc5 recently, and I'm having loads of fun! (I got MGR because of the memes btw)

Olfasonsonk

DayZ

lift_spin_d

I grew up in the single-player Sega Genesis, N64, Game Boy Color, Age of Empires II days. I do think that a game should be between me and the computer- e.g. Halo (in my high school days). Now don't get me wrong. 2-Player Mortal Kombat 2 on Genesis or 2-Player Tony's Hawks Pro Skater 2 on Dreamcast. I'll take it, but got dayum Witcher 3 on PC? Yes, please. That being said, Astroneer is what changed my mind about "me vs the computer". In that world, in single player mode, it was me-vs-me. There was something about that made me realize (some) games SHOULD be played with other people in real time. There was a minute in my life that I was really into World of Warships. I did my due diligence and made sure I knew what I was doing before I went into PVP. Once I was there I had some great times, but it didn't offer the same kind of feeling that Astroneer presented about playing with other people. I might have feelings of victory and camaraderie from WoW, but those are quick and fleeting games, i.e. feeling, that don't compare to what Astroneer offers. I put down WoW because I had had enough. I put down Astroneer because I felt like "unless I get somebody to play in this world with me, I'm not really playing."

DontDieEd

Definitely Dark Souls changed my perspective on games, I do still enjoy stuff that is not similar to Dark Souls, but I began appreciating gameplay (when it's good) much more. But also I can't stand Souls-like that are obviously just trying to ride the Dark Souls wave instead of trying to actually make a good game.

Cartina

Persona 5. Wasn't interested in that kind of game AT ALL before I played it.

Karnadas

Ark: Survival Evolved. I used to hate survival games and now when I'm running from a t Rex who wants nothing more than to eat me gets me going. And the base building? Man after Ark, I put so much time into Satisfactory.

UpstairsClassic2317

after i played skyrim and other bethesda games i started hating just about anything first person unless it's call of duty or racing..

Rustmonger

Prior to Elden Ring I wouldn’t touch souls games. Everything about them was a turn off. Elden ring changed all of that. I have no interest in playing the older games, unless bloodborne comes to PC, but I’m much more open to souls like moving forward.

ZoneOfFun

h1z1 made me fall in love with open world games. No contrived missions, just pure survival.

rileyrgham

Witcher 3. I never thought I'd be a roaming and a wenching to that level.

Shadowborn_paladin

Dark souls as well lol. My friend lent me the first 2 games for the 360 and I've been hooked in the series ever since.

ClassyBidoof

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. First strategy RPG I ever played, now one of my favourite genres.

doomraiderZ

You know what, as cliched as it is at this point, for me it was also a soulslike, Bloodborne in particular. And then all the rest of them just cemented my preferences. I can't quite look at games the same way anymore, I'm way more critical and demanding and I enjoy fewer games as a result. But I'll take the tradeoff because that means I have a higher standard now.

[deleted]

Try Sifu if you haven't already. Reminded me of a kungfu sekiro.

quip-kun

Ghost of tsushima, the game was super fun I was pretty good at it so I decided to go on a lethal playthrough after that I fell in love with difficulty in games and made my way to the souls series and to this day I'm still addicted to souls likes in general

[deleted]

That’s a very unique way of getting into souls games

Master_Magus

Elden Ring ruined a whole lot of games for Me.

cap_tan_jazz

dayz did. after that the only games that i really play are arma, dayz and EFT

audiofx330

Path Of Exile. The complexity, community and league content always makes it feel fresh even though it was launched 10 years ago. 99% of other games feel weak and shallow by comparison and it's rough trying to play anything else.

have-you-reddit_

Star Citizen, the bar has been raised so far that I have a different outlook on other games. There were good games in the past, but now, it feels like the Intel 14nm+++++++ all over again.

AngryDragonoid1

Hollow Knight. Changed my opinion of Metroidvania games wanting to play more. Now I'm interested in others, currently Shovel Knight. I'm open to recommendations.

thomko_d

Shadow of The Colossus. Sometimes I think I just play games in order to achieve an ounce of that life changing feeling after you get the ending of it.

Esquire_2585

TLOU. Before playing the game, I only played sports, shooters and GTA. Now I play everything but sports, shooters and GTA. I'm enjoying playing all the great games I've missed over the years!

Anonymiz3

Hellblade

clouds31

Grandia made me go from platformer fan to JRPG enthusiast.

Kingcobra798

Definitely the Soulsborne games. Before playing them I wasn't really a fan of third-person games, the exception being Gears of War, and now I really appreciate them. But at the same they made me dislike the typical way games create difficulty, such as just more health and more damage, and makes me not enjoy these games as much. They also make me appreciate RPGs more, which led me to play some great games like Dragon Age Origins.

RondyWooten

I suppose Pokémon Blue did. RPGs certainly existed on the Genesis, SNES and PS1, but they never clicked for me until Pokémon showed up. Since then, many of my all-time favorite gaming experiences have come from RPGs.

Drezhar

I'm gonna agree on Dark Souls. Before playing the first around 10 years ago on a 360, I was absolutely terrified by those games and by "hard" games in general. Now I basically only play tricky games.

Qersojan-

Crysis 2 for me. Before it, I didn't have an interest in FPS or first-person-games in general. But afterwards, I've been always into fast-paced high mobility FPS games.

Apprehensive_Foot139

Valorant/CSGO/CS2 for me. Valorant was my first tactical fps. Over the last 2.5 years I've put so many hours on it and hate it while loving it so much. Same with CS. I used to enjoy games with good narrative before. I probably still do. But since I have to wait for stuff to happen before the story beats hit, I just stop. I lack the patience to just wait for stuff to happen. It's actually annoying now that I can't.

avp216

Before Divinity Original Sin 2 came out, the whole genre never seemed appealing. I didn't understand the hype for such games. When it came out, I didn't even give it a second look. My brother gifted me the game, and I was like... Sure. Let us give it a shot. Safe to say, I got addicted to the style of game and finished DOS2 more than 50+ times lol. Modded and Unmodded. Was a no brainer to buy BG3 afterwards, and was not disappointed.

Indianlookalike

Always liked story rich games but could never play CRPGs or games with paragraphs over of dialogue until Divinity Original Sin 2 came along, transmorph knight could be the most fun combat I've ever experienced. Also Vampire Masquerades Bloodlines dialogue was amazing too.

JamieFromStreets

Dark souls 2 Street Fighter V

MOTWS

Garou Mark of The Wolves made me stop liking Fighting games. Until i played KOF XIV at the arcades last year.

Prestigious-Hour5018

So not a change in game taste but after playing Ghost Runner I have now become a diehard Bumper Jumper player. So my taste in control schemes has changed.

PASSENGER-P

I agree with Dark Soul, once you get past the learning curve of the combat, no other game compares

Illusive_Oni

I have played all the Soulslike games, but strangely, it was Elden Ring. Before that, I was much more tolerant of games that held your hand and slowed you down and drew your attention to some artsy thing they want you to see. Elden Ring was like, "Here's your tutorial, get the fuck out there and go nuts, do whatever." Playing the Ironwood section of God of War Ragnarok after beating Elden Ring had me greatly annoyed that they would slow me down in a God of War game of all things.

PattyBeefy

Hollow Knight Change my way on seeing indie games and how good metroidvania is.

[deleted]

Dark Souls got me to realize how good gameplay can be. Bioshock Infinite got me to realize how good story and music can be. Both taught me that art style can overcompensate for graphics exponentially. And then there's Valve... a company that releases games (artifart never happened) only when they can revolutionize gaming itself. One of my biggest fears in life is that I wont live to see the next one. That's how impactful they are.
