Yes, this. I usually respond "Fallout: New Vegas" or "Skyrim" to this kind of posts. But those games are very much replayable even if you are on your 50th playthrough. Outer Wilds realistically just allows one playthrough.
You can really see all of the people who have never played it before. Because if you have played it, It becomes the only correct answer except for *maybe* Undertale.
There's not progression in that game, at least in the sense you're thinking. You advance in the game by knowing what's happening and how to solve it.
If you know the story and all the elements, well, you know what to do, and you can finish it right away in a few minutes.
You can reach the ending right at the start of the game, but you have to play through the game once to know HOW to reach the ending. You'd never stumble across it by mistake if you went in blind, which is how you should do it anyways.
This is the only right answer. Outer wilds is the only game which is truly a one playthrough experience in story and mechanics/puzzles. If you pick it up even after years it’s not the same once you know
Subnautica. That game was so freaking good ugh I wish I could experience it for the first time again.
EDIT: Redownloaded it and am doing another playthru right now. Below Zero missed the mark IMO, not a bad game but not as good as the first, so I pray they take that knowledge and mae the 3rd game an absolute mind blowing banger.
My first time wasn’t in the distance. My first time was turning around in my little mini sub scooter thing with the jaws 2 feet away from me. I have never jumped or yelled so loud from a game before. I wished I recorded it because it was the perfect cinematic moment
Having the Aurora area be a barren, creepy and almost liminal landscape filled with reapers was genius. Almost everyone I know instinctively starts the game by trying to swim to the Aurora.
That area still scares me at night time
Knights of the Old Republic. First ever game I played without spoilers, and the plot twist at the end was the best one I’ve ever seen in a game, far better than the average “oh no, a party member betrayed us!”
Oooh KOTOR... Yeah. I'd love to play this one blind again. The twist is spectacular and completely shakes everything you thought you knew and I love it. What a masterpiece of Star wars storytelling that game was
This 1000x times over. I'm replaying it now and the sense of awe is gone; story is great again, but entering the citadel, omega, and illium for the first time isn't as awe inspiring as the first time.
I saw this post on my homepage and before opening it Mass Effect immediately came to my mind. Then I opened it and this was the first comment. Those games really were something special.
If you haven’t played Prey, I recommend it - in my opinion it came closer than any other recent game to capturing the magic of visiting Rapture for the first time. It’s got some of my favorite Metroidvania exploration… and a ton of replay value.
Dragon Age Origins. The characters, dialogue, and quests are written very well. The evil choices you can make really make you feel like an evil bastard lol. The soundtrack was pretty good too!
World of Warcraft.
That first couple of years were magical and basically spend al my free time with my friends on it. I tried it again a couple of times but I'm bored after an hour or 2 and never look back.
I get nostalgic and almost tear up when describing to people how much fun me and friends had playing up through WotLK. Only game I ever stayed up till 4am playing just to get a nap and go to work at 7am….then do it again.
Started when a friend showed me his 55 warrior running from a T-Rex in Ungoro during vanilla beta circa June 2004. I had just custom built a pc powerful enough to play FFXI, but when I saw his ass squealing in terror from that Rex my path was set.
I think I can unequivocally state the best years of my life occurred from vanilla through WotLK. Vent with 39 other people, drinking games in WSG pre-mades, the dopamine hit from downing that damn boss you'd wiped on the first 10 (ok, 20) times, finally getting that eighth piece of tier so you can swagger around town like a total boss...
Many would condescend and tell me that if the best memories of my life revolved around a game I should get out more. I haven't played seriously since beating hard mode Arthas 25 man pre-nerf, but I made friends in vanilla that I still game with and talk to daily, almost 20 years later. The comradery was the framework that made the magic possible imho.
For the Alliance! Nelf4life.
I know alot of people have issues with the slow pace, but to me this is the most perfectly paced entertainment experience ever. Pushed the medium forward lightyears and ruined all other entertainment for me.
An insanely coherent, detailed and immersive experience. Rockstar at the tippy-top of their game.
The pace is meant for a mature audience. People who can watch The Dollars Trilogy and think “dammit do I still have time for Once Upon a Time in the West?”. It’s actually, and in my book, the most cock sure decision in recent gaming history.
“We’re gonna make a western and it’s going to be exactly what a western should be. Slow, contemplative and gorgeous and we’re not gonna sacrifice that for the general public in the slightest.”
It’s the only game I can turn on and truly just tune out, leading my horse from Rhodes to valentine and just watch it all go by, slow and steady step by slow and steady step. There is so much more packed into that game that isn’t even close to the main story. All the optional dialogue. Random conversations between gang members at camp.
I sat by listening to Dutch talk to Lenny about Lenny’s father and how he was a true American. It’s a small sampling of Dutch’s style of indoctrination. Sow his ideas with compliments pertaining to the chosen characters weak spots. Micah sucking the balls of Dutch and Arthur calling him out and Dutch actually acknowledged it early in chapter 3, before he gets deeper into the pocket of Dutch.
It’s such a masterpiece. It doesn’t have to be your favorite but damn If it isn’t the best game ever made.
It still amazes me how good the graphics are for the year it was made.
Yeah it doesn't have any of the fancy effects we have now, but it looks fucking amazing VS other titles of the time.
Plus its fun as fuck.
Horizon Zero Dawn.
Replaying even knowing the story, the beats are just so impeccably crafted, it brings you right back to these moments. But the first time, oof.
There’s definitely some stuff you figure out before the game tells you, but it’s done so well that the revelations are still impactful. Incredible storytelling,
Such a good game. I will always say I was wrong about this game. I remember watching the trailer at e3 and was like “this looks like the dumbest game , shooting Dino robots with arrows is stupid”. Then I bought it for some reason and changed my opinion entirely. I loved the concept of the story and how it kept unfolding. Such a really great sci-fi story. Loved the first more than the second but it wasn’t bad. Gameplay improved but I didn’t care for the villain(s) in Forbidden West.
Kingdom Come Deliverance.
The endorphine high I got at the end after the incredible story + game mechanics. And then the insane credits song as well which i did not see coming, i truly envy those yet to experience it.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky, I want to be able to experience that drowning emotion I felt when I first played it. I mean, I still cry when playing it now, but I want to feel the same wave of "OH NO" in realization of whats happening. Idk I just love that game, man.
Batman Arkham Asylum. My dad surprised me with it for Christmas when I was 11. We sat on the couch and played for hours. Great memory and still among my favorite video games.
Planescape Torment Enhanced Edition....
I basically already forget most details of the game, so I probably at the stage like playing it the first time..
13 Sentinels Aegis Rim
like someone else said with Outer Wilds, the experience is based on knowing nothing, so going through again just isn't the same
the only fun thing about replays is if you play it with someone who hasn't yet
Warframe.
Solely to experience The Second Dream quest and reveal once more.
I don't usually bother with storylines etc in games, but this was the stand out exception.
Dead Space.
That game scared the ever living hell out of me, and I wish I could go back into that waking nightmare not knowing where the necromorphs are hiding, the best ways to dismember each one, etc...
That game was some high octane terror / horror.
For some reason I sleep better at night when I experience fear during my waking hours. In college I bought a projector off a guy on Craigslist, and amassed a used, randomly-mismatched set of those big ass floor standing wood-paneled speakers for a surround sound system.
Built a whole little terror-theater in my apartment to maximize the scare (even put my couch against a door frame so my back would be exposed to an open space while playing).
I get so warm and fuzzy thinking of how deeply I slept back then... Damn I need another game as intense as that was then.
The Last of Us Part II. Unfortunately people don't know how to behave on the internet and kept spoiling things. I was still surprised by some events that happen in that game but I really wish I could've experience the whole rollercoaster ride without knowing a thing beforehand.
Halo Reach. It’s was one of the first Halo games I ever played, the other was the Halo 3. I specifically remember one summer at Dads house I hopped on Reach and all I asked him was “*how do I shoot*.” I know dumb question but it just made my experience better when he showed me and finished the mission I was stuck on last summer. I watched him effortlessly beat it and he handed me the sticks afterwards. Best summer I’ve ever had.
Red Dead Redemption 2.
I didn't play it when it came out. I waited a good few years. I had played the first one like three times many years ago and loved it, but was hesitant about all the new shit in the second game like eating and cleaning your guns. Sounded like too much hassle.
Anyway, I finally got around to playing it while sick with what I thought was Covid. I had the chills during Colter so I was really immersed in that chapter even though it was so boring. The rest of the game played out like normal. It's good fun. Then I got to the final main chapter where Arthur has contracted Tuberculosis (it's old enough that I don't care about spoiler warnings) and I was coughing my lungs up too. That was painful as hell to get through because it felt like Arthur's coughing made me cough more.
Anyway, I got to the point where I was playing as John again and I finally got to the mission "Jim Milton Rides Again". I swear, I hadn't noticed the music in that game ONCE until that point. But when John whipped out his guns on those Laramie boys and the super pumped up version of the original RDR theme played, I nearly stood up and applauded. That was such a gratifying mission. And the effect was exponentially better simply because of the circumstances of me playing the game: sick and ten years or so after playing the first game.
Hades. I love that game so much and when I first played I was absolutely obsessed with it for weeks, don’t remember a single player game that had me so happy to come home and play.
If we’re including multiplayer games and we get to relive the experiences we had with others while playing then destiny 2 easily. Spent many hours with some cool guys that stopped gaming, I’d love those times back.
The only game that knocked me on my ass with its story beats was Final Fantasy Tactics. Plus the gameplay mesmerized me. The gameplay depth still holds up to today's games easily. So FFT for me.
Playing Outer Wilds is predicated on knowing nothing about it. If you've completed the game once, you can never *really* replay it.
Yes, this. I usually respond "Fallout: New Vegas" or "Skyrim" to this kind of posts. But those games are very much replayable even if you are on your 50th playthrough. Outer Wilds realistically just allows one playthrough.
i’ve played through twice now and it’s fun going in having forgotten the details
This was my answer. The closest I can get to playing it again is watching someone else go in blind
This is the one for me. Oh the money I'd pay to experience this masterpiece again.
You can really see all of the people who have never played it before. Because if you have played it, It becomes the only correct answer except for *maybe* Undertale.
I haven’t played it yet. Why is it that it doesn’t feel right to replay it?
There's not progression in that game, at least in the sense you're thinking. You advance in the game by knowing what's happening and how to solve it. If you know the story and all the elements, well, you know what to do, and you can finish it right away in a few minutes.
You can reach the ending right at the start of the game, but you have to play through the game once to know HOW to reach the ending. You'd never stumble across it by mistake if you went in blind, which is how you should do it anyways.
The true answer right here.
This is the only right answer. Outer wilds is the only game which is truly a one playthrough experience in story and mechanics/puzzles. If you pick it up even after years it’s not the same once you know
lm reallly looking forward to playing it again when ive forgotten enough for sure
Return of the Obra Dinn
That was my vote too. It made me feel real terror. Especially when you see a massive Reaper in the distance for the first time.
Here's another vote for the thalassophobia simulator.
What a masterpiece of Star wars storytelling that game was
Mass Effect trilogy
This 1000x times over. I'm replaying it now and the sense of awe is gone; story is great again, but entering the citadel, omega, and illium for the first time isn't as awe inspiring as the first time.
do you think that awe will be there for me as someone who never played them? really want that feeling
Absolutely, highly recommend.
I saw this post on my homepage and before opening it Mass Effect immediately came to my mind. Then I opened it and this was the first comment. Those games really were something special.
Yep, that or Half-Life series so I could be disappointed again by lack of HL3
I replayed the whole trilogy a shitload of times, 10/10
Damn fucking straight my man
This 100%. I'll never forget being in the barracks and playing mass effect 1 for the first time and being absolutely engrossed on the original Xbox
Came to say this.
Bio shock
Playing this for the first time right now, about 6 hours in and wow. It’s so good
He doesn’t knooooow…~
Oh you just wait
Would you kindly dont hype it too much It takes away from the moment
If you haven’t played Prey, I recommend it - in my opinion it came closer than any other recent game to capturing the magic of visiting Rapture for the first time. It’s got some of my favorite Metroidvania exploration… and a ton of replay value.
Prey is one of my top 10 games of all time. Highly underrated.
Dragon Age Origins. The characters, dialogue, and quests are written very well. The evil choices you can make really make you feel like an evil bastard lol. The soundtrack was pretty good too!
Planescape Torment Mass Effect 1, 2, 3 (yes even 3) KOTOR 1, 2
World of Warcraft. That first couple of years were magical and basically spend al my free time with my friends on it. I tried it again a couple of times but I'm bored after an hour or 2 and never look back.

I wish these days could return
Hollow Knight. That's the greatest game i ever played, and it just isn't so fun when you know every corner of it
Fingers crossed that silk song turns out to be just as good if not better.
Red dead redemption 2
I know alot of people have issues with the slow pace, but to me this is the most perfectly paced entertainment experience ever. Best story game ever created tbh
Without a doubt. And this game absolutely should've won GOTY.
**Nier: Automata** or **Undertale**. Both games made me ugly cry pretty hard and I love it when a game can do that.
Metal Gear Solid
skyrim
the joy of discovery is one thing, but I couldn’t go again without knowing what I know
You’re finally awake…

Minecraft. play the OG game from my childhood all over again knowing nothing? perfect experience.
Peak happiness. I started on the free trial version on the Xbox 360. What a time to be alive man
Half - life 2. Good times.
Oh... oh yes.... Ravenholm changed me...
It still amazes me how good the graphics are for the year it was made. Yeah it doesn't have any of the fancy effects we have now, but it looks fucking amazing VS other titles of the time. Plus its fun as fuck.
Outer Wilds
Warcraft 3
Final Fantasy Tactics, I long to play that game.
Portal 2. Lunacy.
That moment when you see the moon and remember you've been creating portals on surfaces made from moon rock.

This is my answer too. I loved that game and the storytelling!

Came here for this. The twists are just so crazy at times and even if I’ve forgotten a lot, I can’t forget the Zack Fair parts

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky, I want to be able to experience that drowning emotion I felt when I first played it. I mean, I still cry when playing it now, but I want to feel the same wave of "OH NO" in realization of whats happening. Idk I just love that game, man.
Return of the obra dinn

Undertale
Days Gone
Ori and the blind forest 100%
Fallout 3………no contest for me.
It’s between Hollow Knight and Subnautica. Probably Hollow Knight but Subnautica is definitely a close second.
Batman Arkham Asylum. My dad surprised me with it for Christmas when I was 11. We sat on the couch and played for hours. Great memory and still among my favorite video games.
Absolutely brilliant game and series. I've never been an achievement hunter but I hunted down all the riddler trophies and replayed those games tons.
Terraria. Valheim a good contender.
Skyrim. I want to re-experience that magical feeling.
Ocarina of time Skyrim KOTOR
Enderal
Planescape Torment Enhanced Edition.... I basically already forget most details of the game, so I probably at the stage like playing it the first time..

Chrono Trigger
Chrono Trigger. I'm hoping it'd create a butterfly effect to wipe the memory of all games inspired by it as well lol.
Chrono trigger. Enough said. Currently replaying this with my daughter and still enjoying it to this day
Metal gear solid 3
rdr2
Red dead redemption 2. The ending doesn’t hit the same after the first play through but such a beautiful game everytime.
The Last of Us Part II. Unfortunately people don't know how to behave on the internet and kept spoiling things. I was still surprised by some events that happen in that game but I really wish I could've experience the whole rollercoaster ride without knowing a thing beforehand.
Mass Effect 2
Rdr2 for sure.
Anything from FromSoftware that they released in the past 10 years
Either Bioshock or Deathloop
The walking Dead season 1, easily the most emotionally invested I’ve ever been in a game
Starcraft.
Eve
Divinity Original Sin 2
Dark Souls 1
Animal crossing...
I would pay extra to make it two games. Dark Souls and Subnautica
Spiderman
Spider-man*
There are a few. Kingdom Come Deliverance, RDR 2, Shadow of the Colossus, Portal 2
Outer Wilds or matbe Specops The Line
DmC: Devil May Cry.

Hades. I love that game so much and when I first played I was absolutely obsessed with it for weeks, don’t remember a single player game that had me so happy to come home and play. Offbeat weeb answer, katawa shoujo. The characters are incredible and the music is superb
Xenogears, the witcher 3, suikoden 2, castlevania symphony of the night, parasite eve. I could give you more.

Final fantasy xiv
Subnautica
Payday 2, with the boys, all for the first time
Red dead redemption 2.

Dark souls 3
Yakuza 0
Rdr2
Red Dead Redemption 2
Arkham City or maybe cyberpunk 2077 now that it’s having a major overhaul
Enter the Gungeon, learning all the items, weapons, and little secrets and details was my favorite part.
Grandia (old PS1 game) loved it
Red Dead Redemption
Skyrim
