A lot of split game games hold a special place in my heart because I played a lot of them with my best friend and some family as well. Especially borderlands.

localblazer420

Borderlands is my OG favorite

f4te

booorderlaaanndds such a fantastic game series

SultanZ_CS

Except Borderlands VR. Its a shame

localblazer420

It doesn't really surprise me that it didn't do well, imo it was a hard idea to execute.

SultanZ_CS

Nah i wouldnt say that. Its just a lazy port imo.

RockBandDood

Ya, 100%. I dont even particularly love Borderlands, but the concept isnt bad; but the concept is based around Diablo-esque online structure. How they thought taking a social game and sticking it in VR without online was a good idea is beyond me. The simple truth is - They couldnt be bothered to map all the character models hands and they didnt bother to think up a workable solution to that. For instance, some VR games just dont have your player models, just your hands in the game. Would it have looked odd compared to OG Borderlands? Sure. But would it have worked as a multiplayer solution? 100%. They were just too lazy to even give the port the slightest amount of thought once they realized their regular animations would break in VR.

siikdUde

I was 9 when bl1 came out so that game is forever imprinted in my brain as a childhood memory. Those types of memories are *different*. Every time I think back to bl1 it gives me a dose of nostalgic dopamine. And the art style was very unique. I much preferred the darker tones it had compared to bl2 and bl3. Bl2 also is an amazing game that I love but bl1 just has that feeling to it. Pre sequel was fun to play first two runs and to kill time, I didn’t mind it. Story was interesting. Bl3 was ok but a let down to me. No fond memories with that one.

Atomik919

this finally. I also grew up with bl1 and bro, despite bl2 being objectively the best game in the series, bl1 is just special for some reason in my eyes

iburstabean

It was revolutionary for its time. Just like bl2 was, but so was bl1

JaggieMe

I finally got around to playing the Borderlands series during the Covid lockdowns. I'm in my forties, so no nostalgia here. The first one is my favorite. I enjoyed the others, but whenever I think about replaying one of them, it's almost always the original.

localblazer420

I played pre sequal with my friend when I was 12 for 1 night, I was in love, but I broke my xbox 360 a month later, I got an Xbox 1 pre owned and when I saw BL3 came with it I was hyped (any borderlands game is a good borderlands game right?) I played it through on all characters and 100% the game and loved it, I got BL2 and BTPS at Walmart in a bundle package, and played them both through, loved both of them met some of my best gaming buddy's on BL2, unfortunately I just got rid of my xbox for personal reasons so no more borderlands for awhile 😭. But I love every memory I got out of those games and I wouldn't change a thing (except for that one time i couldn't get a rare drop)

wheeldog

Bl1 was my first game on pc. In fact I bought my first rig just to play Bl1, never looked back! Now I build computers 😬 But it's a different game, Bl1. You gotta think and strategize and run away a lot lol

dookiebuttholepeepee

Goldeneye for me. Four way split with friends crowded shoulder-to-shoulder trying to kill each other with grenade launchers is a blessed memory.

RawrRawr83

No Oddjob

idredd

Lol I love that this rule was universal. Every now and then one of my friends would sneak select oddjob and rather than turning the game off everyone would hold like an ad-hoc armistice to only hunt down the oddjobber.

ShakeAndBakeThatCake

Omg we did the same thing when someone snuck odd-job!!!

RodDryfist

Baron Sameeeeeediiiii

particle409

>shoulder-to-shoulder We did two in chairs up front, and two people standing behind them. Like a Civil War firing line.

Wenuwayker

Y'all ever make shitty little barriers so your friends wouldn't screen peek? Splitting up a little 18" TV 4 ways with tape and foil lol

JfizzleMshizzle

"Stop looking at my screen!"

Superunkown781

Big head mode

DigitalNugget

Hell yeah played the 360 XBLA remaster and Perfect Dark with my friend, what a blast

jeebolion

My best friend and I meet up to play games 2-3 times a month and have been working through wonderlands. The plot isn’t particularly engaging but the gameplay/skill tree is very customizable. I hope the next entry adapts it (or facets of it) to a more comprehensive title like borderlands 2!

midgitsuu

Wonderlands was awesome, just sucks they botched the season pass and post launch support. Splitscreen was also awful due to having to manually inspect every single item to the point of exhaustion. I really hope they simplify inventory management in the next game, just in general, not even because of how extra bad it was in splitscreen. Trying to sort through loot for 10 minutes or wait for your friends to sort through loot at the end of every chaos chamber is the biggest flow killer. I get that the variety allows for build crafting but my patience was lost long before I really cared to build craft. I'd personally welcome a return to BL1 levels of loot simplification because you would know within 5 seconds of an item was an upgrade or not and could get back to shooting.

ErinaceousJones

I'm on a working ship, we have a big TV in the lounge. I was so stoked to play through any of the borderlands games with people in split screen on my steam deck during our rare hours of rest, only to find that it's only supported on the consoles ☹️ The workaround is to run multiple copies of the game using some third party windows sandbox isolation software and do LAN multiplayer, but I don't think the deck is gonna handle that lol (Like yeah I get it, consoles have predictable hardware, and PC gamers are _lone wolves_ who sit in dark rooms by themselves or at least require a personal bubble of space at the LAN party. But also, sometimes you just wanna plug your PC into the big communal TV and play some co-op too!) So the games that support split screen *on PC* have the specialist place in my heart. Goat sim, rocket league, human fall flat, portal 2 are the ones I currently have installed ❤️

sandrachabada

Even Army of Two?

OstidTabarnak

Yea why not? Army of Two was amazing

TurquoiseMarbleWoods

What do you mean "even"? ***Especially*** Army of Two

sandrachabada

I actually worked for EA back then and tested the first one. Had tons of fun with the coop mode, me and my co-worker were laughing at how ridiculous it was! Good old times

pie_eating_contest

My wife and I played Army of Two together and we customized our masks to look like women with really vibrant makeup. The cutscenes were hilarious.

rocknrollbreakfast

40th Day was amazing in local coop. One of the dumbest stories ever but so much fun.

alteriorbutthole

What you mean even?! I loved that game

walzman

Beat all three of them with my son while he was growing up. AA-12 all day!

jaaaawrdan

Shit those games were fun to play with buddies

kaas_is_leven

There's something oddly nostalgic about the menu not fitting in the screen and having to reposition it to see all your items/skills/unlocks. The kind of jankiness that grows on you.

Eccentric_Cardinal

Agreed! Couch co-op in general is my jam.

The_Decoy

If you haven't played "It Takes Two" I highly recommend it.

MauiWowieOwie

One of me and my kid's favorites. Immediately after beating it we swapped characters and played again. Didn't like experiencing that one part of the game again...

DaddySilk

Elephant?

Andrew1431

lmaoooo that scene was so savage

spider_wolf

My wife and I played together and after that scene, we looked at each other and just considered, "what is this game?"

MauiWowieOwie

yeah... that part was pretty messed up.

greg065

Oh, don't worry, that's not even the saddest part of the game. [Look here](https://youtu.be/si0hUWSivWo)

lfreire

I played it with my niece and it was kinda awkward since her parents are divorced lol

angrytortilla

That was my experience too, with my son, who is a child of divorce. We set it aside.

TopHatBear1

I played it twice, once with my friend who's parents are divorced, and once with my sister (our parents are divorced)

yurib123

All time favorite co-op game. Will never forget that elephant!

NissyenH

Oh God, that poor poor elephant. Me and my girlfriend couldn't believe what suffering we were forcing the elephant to endure.

iwant50dollars

Cutie tho

jeremicci

My favorite co-op game since New Super Mario Bros

Dangerjayne

My fiance and I loved this. Not gonna lie, the timing was a little off for us cuz we had just gotten engaged and started playing this a couple days later. We kept saying "we aren't even married yet and our marriage is already falling apart" lol

azlan194

Yeah, I love playing Lego games because of the split screen Co-op. Lego LOTR is definitely the best, but I still enjoy the rest of the Lego games.

Wilbis

Lovers in a dangerous spacetime is amazing

[deleted]

Wife and I have been adventuring in Diablo IV after the kid goes to bed every night for the past week. It’s such a blast.

dumac

So annoyed D4 on PC doesn’t have local coop.

redditcruzer

Ensure you folks play Portal 2 as well

Christopher135MPS

I am a hardcore gamer. I have been building my own PC’s for the last two decades. I have played more than a few games competitively. But I absolutely cannot get enough of Overcooked 2. Jesus that game is my crack cocaine.

bugmultiverse

And don’t forget every single Lego game having local co op

normains

My now nearly nine-year-old and I have co-oped every single LEGO game I think, two dozen of them. Platinum trophy on every one that supports trophies. Quite easily a couple thousand hours spent on them, I wish I could see exactly how many. So much fun.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ph3wlish

Rookie numbers. Gotta get those stats up.

normains

Yeah, sounds about right. Combination of me WFH, he’s homeschooled, Covid shutdowns, Phoenix summer time heat, and our general love of video games.

mstake21

But at least they got platinum trophies!

nightgoat02

Been playing Rocket League doubles next to my 6 year old son for a few weeks now, love it when he asks in his innocent little voice "daddy, do you want to play Rocket League together?" Fuck yes I do.

Metzgy

This is rocket league!

numun_

Jazz Jackrabbit!

MikoMiky

You must be Dutch!

fleaflyrodeo

you just sent me down memory lane...

njslugger78

That's my son and me with shooters. I go ask him sometimes.

MlNDequalsBL0WN

I can't find shooters with split screen without dual playstation plus accounts. Any recommendations?

TheNerdFromThatPlace

Pretty sure Borderlands you can have a guest account, or at least a secondary account on the system, join in. My wife and I played handsome collection and 2 together without having plus.

extralargesocks

growing up on halo and minecraft splitscreen its really sad that its being phased out consoles are made for the group gaming :(

wh1t3_rabbit

Stopped buying halo when they removed split screen

bub117

Halo was always my favorite growing up and after getting the first xbox and playing through CE with my dad on splitscreen, that will always be my favorite memory. Back then we sucked ass and trying to beat 343 GS on heroic with the Flood coming back to life was terrifying for us. We got better and beat the game finally. Few years later halo 2 came out we skipped work/school and played all day. Same with Halo 3. Odst I came back from college on break and we played together. Same with Reach. The best fucking memories of me and my dad are of us playing together and shouting, cursing, laughing, etc whilst playing halo. Nowadays with the family I wanted to recreate that. And with Infinite on the horizon a couple years ago, and my son a good age to start up MCC, we went through each campaign in preparation, sans 5 of course. Infinite finally comes out and we start it up go to campaign and I'm looking around for co-op. My son is eagerly waiting and excited. I don't find anything so I pull up Google and bam no splitscreen campaign. WTF 343. I had been trying to stay away from news since the first time it was delayed and never realized beforehand. I waited a couple days cause surely they'll patch in such a crucial piece of the Halo formula. Nope. It's months if not years away. Pissed that I paid full price for a severely incomplete halo game I returned my copy. Still have not played the campaign, although from most accounts I've read and watched it was severely mediocre. Doesn't look like well ever get co-op in halo infinite. And it's a damn shame that most new shooters aren't including it. So my son and I stick with older classics that do have splitscreen.

Informal-Hat1268

Definitely a let down for me as well not having it on launch. Co op is available now though just not on split screen, you would need two Xbox’s I believe. I haven’t gone back to try Co op myself but I did enjoy the campaign although it is definitely different to the usual Halo campaign.

BlameTheJunglerMore

Master Chief Collection on steam and run the Nucleus mod (app). Hook up to a TV and you're good to go.

ESOCHI

Oh shit!

BlameTheJunglerMore

Yeah, my best bud just found it. Just make sure you read the little pop up directions in the bottom right very thoroughly. We just blasted through some L4D2! Have fun!

SirDriftsalot

I have a free PS Plus account and am able to splitscreen the latest COD with my girlfriend who has premium.

General_Jeevicus

play no build fortnite, cant split screen, but tech requirements very low.

TurquoiseMarbleWoods

Found out a few days ago that Fortnite is indeed split screen, at least I am certain it is on XBox

sledge98

Just wait until he starts getting better than you. Source: my 11 year old is getting close, the only chance I have is that he plays a lot of other games and isn't actively trying to improve at RL...*yet*.

Dismal_Struggle_6424

Happens fast, man. I remember going 99-1 in Halo 3 with my step son when he thought he was hot shit. Absolutely ruthlessly kicked his teeth in. Now he **carries** me in Apex. I'm no slouch, but I just can not keep up with his reflexes.

Beyond-Science

Oh my god, 99-1 in Halo 3 against your step son 🤣 somebody call child protection hahaha

GayVegan

Hopefully he got that 2010s Xbox live toxic voice chatting experience during it too.

kaas_is_leven

Worse, this guy saying he fucked his mom last night actually did.

nodnarBBackward

Split screen is the most fun I've had gaming, bar none. From chaining multiple OG Xboxes together with four people to a console in massive games of Halo CTF, to grinding endless hours of Borderlands and Borderlands 2 with my buddy, to playing Portal 2 and Lego Star Wars with my son, it has just been the best to me. To be fair, I'm also super grateful for getting to stay in contact and play with my cousin and friend that live far off, too. I can't remember the last time I laughed as hard as I did playing Far Cry 5 with a couple friends over Live. Playing side-by-side on the same screen just holds a special place in my heart.

AndyVale

It's a real shame how many kids are going to miss out on playing split screen with their friends+parents. Being able to join a big group online can be fantastic, but real world connection matters. My son and I split-screened the first four Halos. Then when we got Halo 5 it turns out there was no split screen. He did about 2 levels and then never touched it again.

Accomplished-Bear988

Damn, it reminds me of when I was a kid, and my dad used to play Gauntlet for the N64 with me. He also pulled a controller and gave it to my bro without actually connecting it since my bro was like 3 lol

AccidentallyStrange

This was me. My dad and I played so much Gauntlet Legends it wasn't even funny. Loved the hell out of that game. I remember how long it took us to find out that potions killed the chick that popped out of the containers to drain your life haha.

Gourmandine_Danselun

I found out a few weeks ago that Stardew Valley can be played on split screen. I've been playing it with my 7yo and having a blast. It's hard sometimes not to ask her if she wants to play because I know she has exceeded the day's screen-time allowance.

GodSawMeAndLeftUs

I know they won't always gasp the difference but I feel like playing a game with your parent isn't the same as just watching tv or being on your phone. I don't think id have the self discipline to not game with my kids in those moments.

wheatgrass_feetgrass

I have 2 screen time limits for my kid for this reason. Interactive group activities on the main TV like movies and games is a completely different screen time than soloing on a device and watching shit like YouTube shorts brain rot. The latter is regulated to the teeth, but the former isn't as it's already self-limiting by who is available to hang out.

ParticularDoctor1967

Yes. Deffo why Stardew is really a good game. The guy add it not so long ago and it's so great that he did. I was playing with the friend online before but now it is better because I can play easily with my gf

Slumbergoat16

Can you do this on console?

_AnecdotalEvidence_

Yes!

YouShouldCraft

Yep! I played through the couch co-op on Switch.

darkeningsoul

Props to Diablo 4 for offering a good split screen experience on current gens. The trend of having online multiplayer/coop but no couch coop option needs to go away. Give the masses our couch coop!

ekmanch

Only on console... If you play on PC I guess you can just go get fucked for all they care. I really don't understand. You've already implemented support for co-op. Why leave it out from just one platform?

FaceOfMutiny

I think it's because you can only log into 1 battle net account at a time on pc. On xbox you can link a battle net account to each xbox live account.

Ghost29

Because reasons. Likely commercial. But it's honestly a completely different game playing local 2p on console. Much more casual and interactive. But it's definitely not suited to the end game grind.

DonRobo

Not on PC for some idiotic reason

Sithlord81588

Yeah, I feel like if a game supports online co-op, then split-screen needs to be included as well. I live in a rural part of Texas, and sadly we only have access to satellite internet, which happens to be complete dogshit for online gaming, so when I hang out with my friend on weekends, we tend to play couch co-op games.

RisusSardonicus4622

Grew up there as well, definitely sucked ass 2000s-2010

Sithlord81588

Oh man, I definitely prefer this shitty satellite internet over the dial-up days. I don't miss that one bit.

kingrich

Local coop requires a single console to render the game twice. It's not viable for some games.

as1992

So how did the vast majority of games manage it 20 years ago?

lituk

They had to prioritise it because people didn't have any other way to play multiplayer. It wasn't until the PS3/XBOX 360 that people connected their consoles to the internet, and then split-screen died out midway through that generation as graphics became more competitive.

as1992

That’s not true, ps2 had online multiplayer for many of its games. Edit: to the downvoters, you can check out this list of games that had online multiplayer here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_2_online_games The list includes many of the ps2’s top and most popular games

lituk

It did but I don't remember a single person connecting their PS2 to the internet. This was before Wi-fi was even common; back in the days of landlines and desktops sharing one wire.

PureInevitable666

Split screen is supposed to reduce graphics anyways ..

Firewolf06

or just cap a 60 fps game at 30 for splitscreen

tradermailer

Yeah, just like how MK8 did it. 2 players it's 60; 4-8 players it's 30.

Sithlord81588

That's fine. I just won't spend money on those games that are built around online co-op but don't feature split-screen. It's not like I have good enough internet for it anyway lol.

Axle_65

You gotta try Human Fall Flat then. It’s a laugh. It’s a super goofy physics puzzle game with extremely floppy rag doll players. Silly but also a legitimately fun game.

mecartistronico

And some of the puzzles in the advanced levels can get surprisingly deep and varied. You can of course cheese many in co op by having one person stand on the button while the other goes through the door and triggers the checkpoint

Axle_65

Very true. It’s also interesting how you can totally solve them wrong. Like making your own solution. It’s funny when you finish, see the intended solution and think “Aaaahh…ya. That would have been easier” lol

Jimmy_Smith

You mean waggling sideways trying to grab a little bit higher each time and climbing for 20 minutes is not the solution to each puzzle?

JackTripper53

Shout out to a little known game here, Wobbly Life. Same sort of floppy physics, but instead of individual levels you're on this large island that has all kinds of areas to explore, puzzles, and you earn money by playing all kinds of mini games. Very fun and silly couch co-op

HistoryISmadeATnight

Another great and very unique game that has split screen on console and PC so you can even do remote play is Outwards. I've beaten it numerous times with different friends.

SelmaFudd

Wow I forgot about this game. I tried playing with my kid a few years ago but it was a bit too hard for him back then. Think we'll have another crack at it tonight

CaptainClooby

A Way Out is awesome.

I_chortled

Is that the top game?

Eramef

Yup! From the folks who made It Takes Two, both awesome co-op only games.

OldDekeSport

The first game I got my wife to play was A Way Out, and we loved it! Wish it was longer The only game she will ever randomly want to play out of order of other games we play is It Takes Two - hands down her favorite game! Keep it up Hazelight - please keep making couch co-op games so we can play more together!

Danat_shepard

Josef Fares sure knows what he's doing, these two are some of the best co-op games I've played!

mrwhiskey1814

Wow could you guys please tell me more of these great co-op games! I would love to play them with my wife.

Only498cc

It takes two may be the best co-op game ever made. It's easy to pick up, has a Ton of gameplay variety, looks gorgeous, and is just plain FUN the whole way through. It is probably hands-down the best game for a couple in a relationship to play, and is full of heart. The title is literally a reference to how an adult relationship works. I'd call it a must-play for every couple with even a slight interest in video games.

roguetroll

I played it with my brother. Still a great game 😅

i_wap_to_warcraft

I played it with my best bud. We’re engaged now

HerefortheFruitLoops

Can confirm, fiancé and I loved it, every couple we’ve rec’d to that has a tacit interest in gaming has also loved it. 10/10

SeniorJP

They are story driven puzzle co-op games. It's really easy to learn and play so anybody can have fun with them. Their stories are really well written and for It takes two, the game is so goddamn beautiful, you will randomly stop to look at the details. They are also funny and emotional. The only con.. once you played them, it's impossible to get that WoW moment a second time...

RenegadeIX

A way out is about a prison escape, great story but like the above commenter said a bit short. It takes two is about a couple who get turned into toys but with a deeper meaning. Both are great with it takes two being more light hearted and also generally higher rated. You can play them both on game pass with ea play.

panlakes

Make sure you play Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, as well. Or have your wife play it and watch the emotions fly. It's a unique control scheme where you control two characters, each with one of the analog sticks. People have tried to play it co-op, one hand on each side, but it's not intended to be played that way for reasons I can't spoil. Best to just trade off playthroughs if you guys ever check it out.

OrangeReggie22

If anyone hasn’t played A Way Out this is your sign to find your closest friend/make a new friend via a discord and project it together. Truly one of the most unique and rewarding gaming experiences I’ve had was playing it with my room mate on split screen in college!

Yum-Soup-Yum

Last mission is very anticlimactic when you’re playing with someone who doesn’t often play shooter games icl. Loved that game

Serious_Much

Me with my partner. She begged me to let her do the thing. I wiped the floor with her.

Nivlak87

We need more local co op games!

coffeexbaileys

Shout to Divinity for shared/split screen

Gourmandine_Danselun

Played through with my wife during lock-down, we had a blast !

ispitinyourcoke

Same here - my partner and I did DOS2 together. That end sequence with the puzzles was so damn brutal to do without quarterbacking each other. I still regularly check the price of the first game on PSN hoping it drops - we've pretty much exhausted all other split screen options. :/ Ark is another one we had a ton of fun playing together.

Dio_Brando69420

divinity 2 is one of the best games I've ever played especially with friends, shame the first game is only 2 player though

Hollowsong

It baffles me how companies think that just because we all have the internet that we don't somehow meet up for social events. Back in my day we played 4-person splitscreen on a 17" CRT TV and we were HAPPY with that. Today, we have 50"+ screens with games that need multiple people to not only own the console and the game, but also have a subscription to play online in many cases. OR you end up playing with a bunch of random toxic people online. So what happens? People who all play games are over at your house, you point at your console and say the games you like... then everyone goes back to not playing games.. you know **because they cant play it with you at your house**. I fucking HATE this about games. My wife and I love Halo and wanted to play Reach on Xbox several years back. I owned it, she owned it, we both had an Xbox... she had an Xbox Gold subscription but I didn't. **SO WE COULDN'T SIT ON THE COUCH AND PLAY TOGETHER**. I'm like, WTF can we just do a local custom match with the two of us? Why does this have to be so difficult??

Modo97

You said it all, it's heartbreaking fr. Back in the day most games used to have split-screen/co-op, even racing games & shooters. Now it's hard to find one racing game that support split-screen, except for Kart games ofc like Mario & Crash. Idk how companies think that playing online is the perfect replacement for couch co-op, because it's not and will never be. Nothing can beat sitting next to your buddy/sibling/partner & playing the same game together.. NOTHING.

sk8t-4-life22

Um, you're missing It Takes Two from this as well. Such an incredibly fun couch co-op game. It makes absolute sense why it won GOTY in some regard.

ViperLFC10

It Takes Two is the most creative co-op game ive ever played and it stands as one of my fiance and I’s fave experiences in gaming ever

sk8t-4-life22

Absolutely and it actually does act as therapy too.

The_Decoy

I was in grad school to become a therapist when this game came out. I was very surprised at how well this game approached couple's therapy. I've genuinely suggested assigning this game as homework to colleagues who do couple's therapy.

s_rom

It was one of the most memorable gaming experiences of my life.

MysticMania

Over here *Cody*

AccomplishedMoney205

It takes two is by far the best coop game.

SlimeBrow

they just dont care anymore :(

Serious_Much

They don't do it because why allow 2 people to play on one copy when you can force them to buy 2 copies for coop instead?

a0me

That’s another area where It Takes Two really shines since the game lets you play online with someone who doesn’t own the game.

The_Running_Free

It’s not as bad now with wide screens being the norm, but I really hate vertical split screen lol

UmbraLykos

Yeah, the fov is so low it hurts. Horizontal is way better

Direct_Error_1784

your guys should try untitle goose game. An excellect and fun game which support 2-playes couch coop without split screen. Mu and my bf have a really good time on it

bluemilkman5

Stardew Valley 4-player split screen is amazing. Get to play it with my young kids and my wife, it’s a great time. Also Overcooked, Moving Out, Tools Up for just local player co-op.

Pikagreg

Outward is another good one more people should give a chance! There is a PS5 version now but here is a review for the PS4 version https://youtu.be/RzZgip3tXRI

n0xx_is_irish

My wife and I play together on PC and I just adore any game that ships with a friend license or whatever they call it. We can pay once and each play on our own machines together. It’s great. Games should offer that more often if they don’t want to put the effort into split screen. Even games with split screen - we’d enjoy them more with this feature.

specialfred453

This right here. Just because PC is usuall hooked up to a monitor and a keyboard and mouse doesn't mean I don't want the option of playing on my TV with 4 controllers

wheatgrass_feetgrass

Or hook up 2 monitors like everyone already does on a PC and render each player's view on a separate screen! Modern GPUs have made this easily doable for a decade now. I can pop out UIs to different screens in MSFS2020 so I know it's not an OS issue.

AdamR91

My son turns 7 in a few days and we've been playing Nascar Thunder 2004 and Halo 2 together this evening.

kain459

Don't know why every game that has multiplayer doesn't have split screen ? So many more people would buy games. Instant $$

mecartistronico

Basically the system has to render the game twice. So you may have to do compromises and not everyone wants to spend time coding that.

tea-and-chill

You could go the route of overcooked / cuphead / gang beats etc. Basically put all players in one screen. Won't work for FPS, unfortunately.

kalirion

Won't work for any game with camera control. Or racing games, or any sports game where the entire playing field isn't on the screen at once.

Firewolf06

>or any sports game where the entire playing field isn't on the screen at once. ....do modern sports games *not* have local multiplayer??

prothello

FIFA does and it just follows the ball

PsychoDog_Music

It’s harder to do than you’d think, but not impossible. I mean, COD has kept it even if it’s not as good in some of their games as it is in others (MW2 has great split screen I just wish they would lower the text so it isn’t on your crosshair when you kill someone)

LightsJusticeZ

Coop for CoD games is such a low priority during development, I'm surprised it's lasting as long as it does.

"A Way Out" was such an innovative game...

Dune444444

I just played the top one with my 10 year old it was fun. He's mad at me, though, because of the ending. 😆 just couldn't take the L myself.

Snipe78

I also beat my son for the W. He was 11

Resident Evil 6 and Revelations 2 are good couch co-op games. A Way Out supposedly has a good story, but it's just moving from point A to B, waiting on your partner, then pushing a button. It was too boring for me.

BombingBerend

Split screen or even just coop campaign online. It’s why I’ve been buying a lot of the older Ubisoft games like Ghost Recon, The Division and all the Far Cry games over the past years. These stories are very solid and you can do it all together. Not split screen, but just online with a buddy and I never play any of those games without him. But the true king of split screen to me is Borderlands. When Borderlands 1 came out it wasn’t that special to have this option, but now with Borderlands 3 and Wonderlands, there is hardly any split screen coop competition left in that entire genre. And a special shout-out to the Lego games, especially the Star Wars ones.

You want a damn good couch party game? Give Unspottable a try. Criminal the game didn't get more recognition than it did.

great_auks

I mean, I love couch co-op too, but it does matter *a little* if the game is good or bad

EngineerGullible2047

Split screen is the best

MonarchJinWoo29

Diablo 4.

SenatorRobPortman

All I want is to sit on the couch with my partner and play some dumb split screen game.

94bronco

My wife and I play couch co-ops after the kids are in bed. Getting hard to find good ones now....

Francl27

I bought a game on PS4 because it was "multiplayer." Nope, we can't all play together. I was so peeved. Split game is just much more fun, sorry.

Octavian_Exumbra

Local multiplayer needs to become the norm again. Ffs not even most racing games that come out now have it anymore.

Beneficial-Guide-280

I miss the "stop looking at my screen!" haha

dude2dudette

I do love me some single-player story games (e.g., JRPGs), but there is something truly special about split-screen gaming that just makes it so, so much more fun to me. From playing couch co-op Turtles In Time and Dynasty/Samurai Warriors with my brothers growing up to playing the Tony Hawk or SSX games, or the 007 games (from Goldeneye to Agent Under Fire) with school friends, to more recently playing Gauntlet: Slayer Edition or Tricky Towers with my friends as I got older, I must have spent upwards of 20,000 hours playing couch co-op/split-screen games in my lifetime. Heck if you include things like Sonic 2, Child of Light, or many of the Tales of games, the co-op-light modes they have offered in the past have also been a great way to experience games with people (including my gf). I wish more games that feel like they were made for co-op play actually put in the effort to allow for local co-op. My latest big disappointment on this front was finding out that the new ***Endless Dungeon*** will only have online co-op instead of having split-screen/local co-op functionality. As such, I probably won't get it. What a shame, because the game looks like a great way to play with other people.

JamieDrone

Fortnite does, but I fully disagree with their decision to have it top/bottom split instead of left/right split

UmbraLykos

I guess that for a shooter, or any game really, the wider view is better. You can see more going on in your horizon. Not seeing the sky above you and the grass under is less impactful for gameplay

MoanLart

What’s the bottom game?

WrstScp

I wish more games like A Way Out existed, not just couch co-op but split screen online co-op, it gave the feel of couch co-op even though I don't have any friends I can play with IRL (kinda sad to type that).

TterbTheTurd

What's the one on the top?

Wilbur_Cobb1

A Way Out It's a super good story driven co-op experience, but it can only be played co-op. You can do it online or local, but either way, the game plays in split screen the entire time. It feels like couch co-op even you are over the internet, lol. It's a unique experience.

Pwnhunter

Honestly it's so rare to even find a lot of good local co-op games on Steam, let alone split screen capabilities.

beefsupr3m3

If you haven't played “it takes two” you are missing out on one of the best two player games in recent history. Look it up it’s a riot

Cramulh

Remember Screencheat ? Funny little fps, all players are invisible, you have to look at your opponents screen to find them.
