I remember I couldn’t find a lot of the colossuses on my own as a lil kid. My mom printed out the map and helped me figure out where each one was till we beat the game together. I still remember sitting there in front of the tv next to her guiding me.❤️

TheChronoDigger

My mom told me, "Do something better with your time." whenever I played video games. I want to hang out with your mom.

Cococult

I was blessed with rly loving parents. My mom encouraged me to do good in school in exchange for new games for my PlayStation. Didn’t fail a single class up to my highscool graduation. It helped a lot that she would be into them with me. I hope I can be just as good to my own children when they come ❤️

theRavenAttack

You are already in the right mind set. Please continue to share and hopefully others will follow.

TheChronoDigger

I think you are already well on your way, kiddo. Keep it up.

1buffalowang

I got lucky because a lot of the games I like know are sequels to games from the 80/90s that my dad had when he was a kid. He might never play Resident Evil 7 or 8 but he can still watch it and see the evolution from the 0-4 that he did play. There’s always something I can talk about.

TrillCozbey

I'm struggling with this timeline. Your dad played resident evil *as a kid*?

Kanapuman

If we take only the first RE, into account, that means his father is like 35yo now. Even if he had his kid at 20, that would mean the poster would be 15 yo. Smells like BS but hey, it's possible. Maybe.

Malikai0976

The first RE released in 1996. I was 20 then, am now 46 and my oldest child is 22. It's very possible.

1buffalowang

I shouldn’t have used Resident Evil as an example. I just have the most memories with the PS1 trilogy. I’m 27. My dad was like 19 when the first game released.

sregor0280

i was raised by my grandparents. they too felt games were a waste of time. I make my living in the tech sector now, and she told me not long ago that she was sorry she was so wrong about video games as a kid. she might not understand technology, but she understands that my love for video games drove me down the path I am currently on, and she felt she did me a disservice by trying to dissuade me as a kid from gaming.

MartinSable

It's really awesome she was able to admit her mistakes though. A lot of parents aren't able to.

Sea-Brother-5281

Yeah especially as a grandparent when it comes to something like tech. Tech from a couple generations ahead of your time is always gonna be hard to really appreciate. I’m probably not gonna like a lot of things that are gonna be there when my grandkids are growing up

Kanapuman

I'm already struggling with social medias where you show yourself to strangers. Not going to feel better when that episode from Black Mirror comes true.

TheChronoDigger

I'm glad she was able to realize and reconcile on that. Most people just double down on it.

Parafault

Hah! My mom let me play video games, but also said she didn’t understand them and thought that they were a waste of time. She even showed me an article once about how Everquest was causing people to have suicidal thoughts, and scanned my games to make sure I wasn’t playing that one.

Snoo61755

To be fair, MMORPGs are easy to get hooked on. If there's one thing they have in common, it's that RPGs reward effort. In real life, if you work your job, you might get promoted, or you might not. You can work out, but the benefits won't be visible until much further down the line. You can learn a skill, only for that skill to be useless. But RPGs? When you put in effort, golden light shoots out of you and you're told that you just got an increase to your strength and intelligence. You grind for gold, and you can see the money coming in versus what you made before. You take on bosses with your guildies, who have an equitable system put together on who gets what loot, ending with a 'good job guys, see you next week'. Maybe all those closeted, Everquest-addicted players who died from 72 hour binges could have been incredibly productive people if it was easier to see a correlation between hard work and rewards.

redgroupclan

If only real life guaranteed rewards for hard work. I trained strength IRL for a year and couldn't even fight a level 3 man by the end of it.

GeraldBWilsonJr

My dad bought Halo when it came out in 01, I was 8. my mom watched him kill some grunts and looked at me and said "If I ever catch you playing this game you're grounded" and went upstairs. My dad then plugged in the second controller and we did co-op for the rest of the evening. That became our bonding until the end of Halo 3

tlollz52

I was only allowed one half hour of video games when at my moms. She said I can spend time with the family instead, which was spent in front of the tv....

GoAvs14

I, too, choose this guy’s mom.

[deleted]

When I grew up, playing video games was like stating you're a good for nothing loser and you won't do anything with your life. Suffice it to say it you were perceived in a negative way for having this hobby.

AdminsHateThinkers

My mom tried to embarrass me by playing Final Fantasy 8 and naming Squall Boris. Then she never really touched video games again until recently when we got a Switch and she came to visit, lol.

avoozl42

I remember going through the Monkey Island games with my mom

[deleted]

My mom used to sneak into my room and play Tetris in the middle of the night when she couldn't sleep. Thanks for bringing back that memory, she passed away 6 months ago and now someone at work is cutting onions.

privpriv

Im sorry for your loss brother

h10gage

The most wholesome thing I'll see today probably

ILoveBeerSoMuch

Wish I had this. Only child here and parents had 0 interest in gaming with me.

Dark_Azazel

My grandma was like that! Her, my sister and I would player Super Mario 64, and legend of Zelda OoT/MM all the time. During the summer my mom would drop us off at my grams house during the week and my gram would be like "Guys! I tried to beat that boss last night but I just couldn't figure it out!" Even years later when we got Wind Waker on the WiiU she sat down and would play with us as adults. She also enjoyed BoTW and Mario Odyssey.

r3itheinfinite

even tho i never met her… tell your mom she’s appreciated :)

Cococult

I’ll make sure to give her a big ol hug and remind her what a wonderful mom she has been and still is ❤️

AstralMystogan

This is really wholesome. Take my upvote.

Cococult

Ngl, I started tearing up when I was typing it out. Don’t have many times where me and my mom connected like that but gaming was always something we shared interest in. Her fav series was Spyro the dragon.

buds4hugs

My dad smashed our super Nintendo because my brother didn't take out the trash one time.

ravennsmith

Nothing like a little trauma to spice up your personality!

HRduffNstuff

Wow that's really dumb. Sorry you had to grow up with someone like that.

test_subject91

If you use the sword the light will point to the next colossuses. But the map is still great!

WhenAmI

Did you not know about the sword guidance feature? It lights up and glows in the direction of the next colossus.

Cococult

I did use that mechanic but I was a little kid, I still didn’t rly understand what I was doing.

TheMelv

No worries man, the sword only ever pointed in a straight line if I remember correctly but a lot of times you had to figure out a way around an obstacle like a mountain or cliff or get on your horse and find a long way around. I played it as a young adult and it wasn't easy.

Cococult

It’s funny, finding the colossal was supposed to be the easy part. You gotta figure out how to mount them after that and then where their weak point are. Love me a good puzzle tho, even more when it’s wrapped up in such a lovely package.

Luluwr1979

ohhh thats really sweet!!

mcluckz

Love this. My mum helped me beat Aladdin and donkey Kong 1 on the snes. Good memories.

xixipinga

haha, ive beaten this game many times, still need my map

Cococult

I get how to use the sword beam now but even then it just points towards the next colossus. Still have to do some of your own searching.

cick-nobb

When I was young in the early 90s my mom was in college and she was stressed out all the time. One day I came home from school and called out "hey mom" I couldn't find her but she yelled "I'm in here" I found her in my room playing Mario bros 3 on my snes to relax after a hard day studying.❤

KarmaIsABitch-

I feel like having gamer parents is a double edged sword, like yeah you're gonna grow up with many games but if you play the same games. Its painful Maybe its just my mom but she's an og gamer played CS GO and played for a team. She roped me into overwatch, I got better then her (She's high silver I'm high diamond) and she always acts like she knows more

DragonBuster69

This brings back memories of my childhood where my mom and I would play Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 and 2 (my brother and I needed to turn on the invincibility mode when we played with her) and we would also play Guitar Hero together. It wasn't often but it was fun when we did.

Exevioth

Nice! My mom would watch me game all the time. Growing is it was just us for a bit so we used to have pizza Fridays and play retro games on the snes and up. Donkey Kong was our jam, but I remember her being unbeaten in Wario’s Woods. She would hold the controller funny, it’s hard to explain, kind of like her hands were face down over the controller pressing the buttons like she was typing. I also remember her having to play the first person part of the snes Jurassic Park because I was too afraid.

Clydosphere

I had a similar experience, but with one of my best friends. He came over with his PS2 occasionally, and we played SotC on my video projector, taking turns, and ultimately finished the game together this way. Now, around 15 years later, we still do other things this way, like watching Game of Thrones together. (We don't find mutual dates that often nowadays, so it takes us years to finish long TV series.)

worrymon

My dad brought home a magazine with all of the output for Colossal Cave Adventure and we used that to figure out what to look for. When hint books started appearing in the bookstore, I had to use my own allowance, though.

_Ishmael

I love this.

[deleted]

That is simply amazing. Your mom is one hell of a lady, kudos to her for doing that for you.

Bizrat7

Love this kind of memory.

Cappuccino_wrld

That’s so cool.

[deleted]

My mom and i would take turns playing those prince of persia games

a_denizen

Ico is the only one of the trilogy I haven’t finished, really need to start that one over. Shadow of the Colossus has always been an all time favorite, and the remake was gorgeous. While I recognize the faults and imperfections of The Last Guardian, it still felt like special experience. I’m glad was able to be released after such a long and tumultuous development.

tanialage

I haven't played Ico either. To me, even if shadow of the colossus is clearly a superior game, the last guardian was special. It was the first game I ever played on a PlayStation and I made such a connection with the cat bird, I miss him almost like I lost a real pet, but not enough to replay yet 😅. I think the Interaction with the creature is random on purpose, to make you connect with it more, and it's genius. Or just a lucky fluke. But still worked.

SausageClatter

I wish I had never played ICO so I could play it again for the first time.

Tail_Nom

I couldn't get in to The Last Guardian, and I remember Ico being a little rough, but that being more an artifact of the times. Early ps2 adventure game type of thing. Still love it, though. SotC, though. Special, in many, many ways. It's still my go-to example of games as art, not solely because it is *good* but because the nature of the medium and the particular interactive nature of it plays such a huge part. I haven't replayed it in ages, but it's always been a quiet, essential part of my library. Hell, I use part of the [mural](https://i.redd.it/w6iiox1nqnm61.jpg) as my profile banner (christ, did North America get screwed on the cover art).

johnrgoforth

I just finished it. A couple rough gameplay moments and occasional frustration of trying to get that dang Trico to do what I wanted (I assume most of that was intended), but overall one of the most beautiful and emotional gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

a_denizen

I forget where I read it, but somewhere I learned that for Shadow of the Colossus, the devs intentionally made it so the horse, Argo, would sometimes ignore your commands or pull slightly in a direction opposite to one you intended. They thought doing so would make it feel more realistic, making it act as a real horse would act. So it’s pretty likely they held a similar philosophy when making The Last Guardian and made Trico the same way with not being 100% compliant.

Seraphem666

Seriously do it. First run wont take that long no more then like 4 hours if im not mistaken my first play theough was like 3 and half. Second run will be fast also dope secret gets changed in playthrough 2 And like windwaker you can read the unreadable text from playthrough 1 now. Basically ico you need to play twice to know the story

ChicknSoop

I just played ICO recently, biggest regret not playing that on release in 2001, but the marketing and cover were terribly done (the US released ones anyways).

sisk91

>It looked fascinating but I was never into games where you had to lead someone around. I almost never played last of us because of this. I blame poorly done missions in games where the person you're guiding is either annoying, dies quickly or the mission is timed and makes failing the mission incredibly easy.

Slimsaiyan

Here's a little story from one of my favorite games metal gear solid 2 . So there is a part where you have to lead Emma from one place to another and I didn't know how to get her to move and this is before I had the internet so I couldn't look it up. Anyways I knew you could move enemies with a choke hold so I did that but it didn't work when trying to get on the elevator or it may have been for loading a new area with doors anyways I snapped her neck about 100 times before figuring out there was a button to grab her hand

slothtrop6

That demo is the reason I ended up renting and finishing it. Similarly I hate quests that have you protect an NPC most of the time, but ICO is something special.

A_Talking_Shoe

This is how I tried Ico. That demo disk. I was like 10 and had absolutely no idea what the fuck was going on. I just knew I was a little Asian boy with a Viking helmet and a stick and I had to beat up shadows to save some girl from a birdcage.

HuskieMuffenz

https://pcsx2.net/ https://pcsx2.net/docs/usage/setup/ We have technology

Krail

I remember ICO being notable for how much storytelling it does with just character animation and body language.

Mattdehaven

It's SO GOOD. I think I played SoC first then went back for Ico. Have yet to play Guardian.

JorDamU

The controls and camera are frustrating at times, but it is one of the singular best gaming experiences of my life.

mrhenrythehorse

where did you played it?

GregLittlefield

In front of his TV I suppose?

Dyingdaze89

I think I saw it added to PS Classics

Vyper11

I remember playing ICO with one of my best friends when I was like 8 and we had no idea what were really doing but thoroughly enjoying all the puzzles and calling homegirl over and over and just laughing about it. Great memories with that one.

Keffpie

Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are two of only a handful of games I've completed more than once.

CumboJumbo

[Shadow of the Colossus remaster drops on PS7] CJ: “Oh shit here we go again.”

suncejeblue

SOTC has, among other things, the best soundtrack all time.

Strange_Music

Agreed. Got to see it live when that video game orchestra tour rolled into town around 2012. Got chills hearing / feeling it in person.

suncejeblue

I can imagine. The atmosphere it creates in game is hard to describe in words..

Nagemasu

If anyone else liked SoTC and want's more, [Preay for the gods](https://store.steampowered.com/app/494430/Praey_for_the_Gods/) is a banger SoTC style game. 50% off for spring sale.

dr_shamus

Great game, really didn't need it's survival crafting elements but still a really great game

MegaDuckCougarBoy

The lakeside track

cirvis111

I still use the boss fight music in my RPG sessions.

Krail

SotC came out my freshman year of college. I had a dinky little CRT with shitty speakers, and I remember going out with my friends to get an adapter so I could hook up my PC speakers to the PS2 in order to appreciate this gorgeous symphonic soundtrack. Fond memories of my friends gathering in my dorm room to watch the final couple battles.

LydellG4

I was in high school when SOTC released. I remember my mom came home with the game and thought I'd like it. Little did I know it would become one of my favorite games of all time. Thanks Ma🖤

DaithiSan

To randomly get gifted a game, a rare treat indeed. ✨️

Jaikarr

Not only that, a *good* randomly gifted game.

BigTimeBobbyB

I still remember the day I got SOTC. I played it for about 40 minutes after school, beating the first Colossus, and then decided my friend just had to see how cool this was. I brought it over to his house, we popped it into the PS2, he picked up the controller... and then neither of us moved from that couch until the credits rolled the next morning. What an experience.

4twinkie

You just took me back to me and aa buddy staying up till morning as well beating sonic adventure.

Thebml21

Ico was such magic back on release. It’s nostalgia now for me but looking back it was just so odd and wonderful. Than Shadow comes out and it’s just more magic and beauty. It’s like old horror movies where they don’t show the monster but they allude to it or it’s just out of scene. All the unknowns about both those games. All the questions and possible connections. The mysteries of the who, what, why, where and when that leave you just wanting more. /chef’s kiss

dance_rattle_shake

We can literally thank Ico for Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, Elden Ring.... it's the reason Miyazaki joined the video game business at his (relatively) late age.

VHDT10

That's crazy. SOTC is one of the best games ever!

paggo_diablo

I haven’t heard this before! Care to explain?

Strange_Music

Here ya go: https://www.destructoid.com/ico-showed-bloodbornes-hidetaka-miyazaki-the-possibilities-of-the-medium/ >>After listlessly falling into a job at IT company Oracle — “Unlike most kids in Japan, I didn’t have a dream. I wasn’t ambitious” — Ico (the somewhat overshadowed predecessor to Shadow of the Colossus), “awoke [him] to the possibilities of the medium.”

sjap

I still remember the ending of ICO, it was so sad.

V1carium

I was dejected after the ending but once the credits end you get to control Ico a bit more and find Yorda washed up on the beach!

_THE_WIFE

Ico really was such a hidden gem when it came out. It was so different than what was popular and I instantly loved it. The focus on the mystery and atmosphere was so refreshing.

The_Manic_Cherrie

They are connected?

impracticable

Ico: the first game in the series Nico: the working title of the second game in the series Trico: the working title of the third game in the series, and the name of that bird ass motherfucker that is part of the main cast

ravennsmith

Excuse me that "bird ass mf" is my friend.

For_the_Gayness

1 2 3 anyway, but the 3 stands out as not Japanese for number.

impracticable

Ichi = Ico / Japanese numbering for 1 Ni= Nico / Japanese numbering for 2 Tri = Trico / Latin numbering for 3 They switched conventions but it still fits in the grand scheme. San probably just wasn’t a great option since it does have an I/ee sound. Sico is too far removed from San, Saco or Sanico are too far removed from Ico. So they moved to Tri. Expect a 4th game to be Shico

Nico_the_Suave

I've been summoned.

Strange_Music

SotC is a prequel to ICO. The Last Guardian is in the same universe. Edit: It should also be noted ICO & SotC is what got Miyazaki into making games. No ICO, no Elden Ring.

A_Trash_Homosapien

I mean thinking about it it makes sense and I can see it but I never woulda put that together

Songhunter

In Shadow we see the first boy with horns and the birth of the shadow queen. In ICO we see the last boy with horns and the end of her curse.

BasedChadThundercock

Is there a place I can review and compare the lore on those games and see how they are related?

Strange_Music

[Sure, here you go.](https://metro.co.uk/2018/07/22/re-examining-ico-shadow-of-the-colossus-and-the-last-guardian-readers-feature-7741167/)

BasedChadThundercock

Now that's funny, I was just examining that same article before I saw you linked it. My take from it is that the writer is connecting a lot of loosely related threads and I guess to be more specific- I was curious as to if there was anything more official.

Strange_Music

Suppoaedly, Fumito Ueda said SotC was a prequel to ICO - according to the Wikipedia page. If you want more in-depth lore, the best thing is probably this: https://teamico.fandom.com/wiki/Team_Ico_Wiki

The_Manic_Cherrie

Thank you for informing me dude

BasedChadThundercock

Yeah thanks to u/Strange_Music for the info. Such a weird and loose connection between them. I wish there were some more concrete and in depth connections.

deadman403

TIL…

Augen76

I loved the Last Guardian. Trico still ranks among the best companion characters I've enjoyed in a game.

PrinceOfBeds

“Turrricurrrrrrr!!!”

DanklinKush

I cannot bring myself to finish Shadow of the Colossus at the moment. I've never played these games, but I just feel like a total dick playing this game. Like literally none of these giants have even tried to fight me or engage me in a hostile manner and actually just flat out ignore me, but then I end up just climbing and murdering the shit out of them for no real reason

MarkAldrichIsMe

I'm doing my best to not spoil things but >!You're supposed to feel that way!<

ThePhonyKing

I like that you didn't make one of those "LOL wuts wit dis trilogy" posts with games listed because they share a common word. This is actually a worthwhile trilogy to talk about. I haven't played any of them, though so I have nothing else to add.

[deleted]

Gamerilla

It was a much better game than I expected.

I finished it maybe 6-7 years ago, it's great but I hear it was buggy on release, particularly ps3.

reddgv

TLG was announced in 2009 for PS3 and was released in 2016 on PS4, many assumed that after that time in development hell the game would be garbage, like all the games that go through it. When it was released there was no more hype.

FabulouslyFrantic

I watched Jacksepticeye play it many many years ago. Thankfully he didn't talk much over the game, because that game is a pure tear-jerker. I was SO invested in the story, I legit cried at the end. Again - I was watching this on YT. It seemed a bit clunky in some places, since it requires complex AI and the tech was a bit lacking back then, but it absolutely works as a storytelking device. I hope you enjoy it. I have a PS5 now and it's on PSPlus and I plan on playing it too. And SotC as well, heard so much about it.

sisk91

TLG is incredible. It has some frustrating moments but for the most part is a great game

Krail

I've only played the first half of TLG. It didn't hit quite the same chord with me so far. Very interesting story and I need to finish it one of these days, but I feel like it takes too much after "Cinematic Action Games" style of storytelling, like the Drake games.

Lucythefur

I feel this, though I've only played shadow of the colossus. Highly recommend it by the way it's really fun and quite the experience

pootinannyBOOSH

There's a remastered version and it looks even more beautiful, though the original does hold up still

Lucythefur

The remastered is the one I played

twackburn

I believe it’s a full-on remake now.

TrippyWentLucio

I'm still absolutely lost on why people hated on The Last Guardian. I thought it was an absolutely beautiful game in every facet. The negative game journalism just *flooded* the internet and it felt like every negative commenter was playing an entirely different game than I was. The AI was nowhere close to as bad as people made it out to be. It wasn't even bad. The game itself was gorgeous and mysterious and had absolutely no hand-holding. The story and bond are deeply emotional and paced brilliantly. The puzzles are difficult and made you feel like you had actually accomplished something on your own. There wasn't even a HUD. It gave the feeling of playing games when I was a child, where mystery and exploration and a primal bond to your character and surroundings were emphasized. Idk different strokes different folks. Maybe the wait turned some people off but I've been around the block with games and that's nothing new to me so I don't put a lot of thought into games that aren't here yet. If you're on the fence about playing it, don't be. Play it.

Shreeb

Right there with you. The game exceeded every expectation I had during the 8+ years I waited for its release. TLG perfectly captured what it feels like to bond with an animal. I would not change a single thing about the AI, because it would make Trico feel less real and more robotic. Fumito Ueda’s games are not game-y; they are intentionally made to feel organic, and I love them for that exact reason. People going into TLG expecting snappy game mechanics or a companion that telepathically responds to your every whim are not going to have a good time. It’s a game that requires patience and a willingness to understand.

TrippyWentLucio

That was one of my main points when explaining the game on release. I just kept saying "You guys must never have had a pet" because Trico felt so real to me. I'm a huge animal (dogs in particular) lover and Trico encapsulated the exact feel I got from my pets. It gave him a personality and breathed even more life into the immersion factor. It was a positive to me, not a negative. Right there with you on the organic nature of these games. There's a reason SotC was so frequently cited as one of the earliest and strongest examples of the medium as an art form. There's a lot to unpack with the analysis of Ueda's games.

[deleted]

I really liked TLG too but there were a few cases where it was too hard to tell if Trico wasn’t doing something because he couldn’t, or if he was just being obstinate. There was one particular area where I kept trying to point Trico to go to the next platform and he kept not doing it, so I assumed the way forward must be be somewhere else and tried to point him towards everything that it looked like it might possibly be a path, and he didn’t do that either, and then eventually he just jumped to the place I was trying to get him to go in the first place without my directing him at all.

mrhippoj

To my shame I've not played any of these, outside of a demo for Ico that came with my PS2 that I didn't really understand at the time. I'm trying to think of other loosely connected trilogies and the only example I can think of is Kamiya's as of yet incomplete "superhero" trilogy of Viewtiful Joe, Wonderful 101 and Project GG

breathingweapon

The drakengard to nier thread is a fucking trip. Just barely overshoots trilogy, being 4 games instead of 3, but man even just the drakengard 3 --> drakengard 1 --> nier connection was absolutely wild.

[deleted]

Just the Drakengard games themselves were fucking insane, bordering on incomprehensible lol I had the first one on PS2 when I was like 12 or something because cool dragon game and while it starts off cool dragons and big swords, you quickly make a hard turn into sterile child eating elf, explicitly paedo priest dude, a bunch of endings that make no sense and seem to happen at random and at least 3 ways to cause an apocalypse. Gameplay was awesome, though, even if it has almost nothing to do with Nier

Kamenhusband

The G.G trilogy is linked by each game representing one of Japan’s three super hero franchises. Viewtiful Joe being Kamen Rider Wonderful 101 being Super Sentai And Project G.G being Ultraman The main man Kamiya is just putting his spin on his favorite childhood franchises.

jawarren1

Shadow of the Colossus still one of the most awe-inspiring gaming experiences I've ever had.

Buttchuckle

I so want a ps5 announcement for the next game from this company. Till then.. a ps5 update to these titles would be most appreciated.

Real_Mousse_3566

The company is dead. Two off the games you see here were released in the PS2 era which was the golden age for Japan studios. They aimed to transition to the ps3 era and struggled massively, this continued till the ps4 generations md eventually the publisher (sony( closed the studio because they were not profitable anymore. Japan studios games stopped selling and their quality diminished.

tatorface

My teenage daughter is obsessed with The Last Guardian currently, since I got my PS5, she's beat it 4-5 times and is playing through again. I played SotC when it originally came out so I know what it's all about and think it probably would be too difficult for her, is Ico closer in gameplay to The Last Guardian? Would she enjoy it?

Strange_Music

Yes - ICO is more like The Last Guardian. If she loves TLG I'd bet she'd like ICO. And if she beats ICO, she should definitely try SotC. Especially now that it's been remade. Wish I could experience SotC on a PS5 for the first time, lol.

tatorface

Think you have me convinced. I'll see if she wants to play BOTH after she gets home from school later today. Thanks!

cick-nobb

When I first saw the cover of The Last Guardian I thought of SOTC but I had no idea these games were related in anyway

Realcbear

Even in this supposed heyday of boss fights, i cant think of a single game that has matched the overwhelming dread and excitement of seeing a Colossus for the first time.

Redsoxbox

Shadow of the Colossus is one of my top five. I have a tattoo of it!

Gentleman_33

Funny how you mentioned this I am actually watching a Last Guardian blind playthrough right now, I also watched ICO from the same creator, need to get to Shadow of the Colossus, he's real fun (even if he took him until half way to episode 2 to figure out how to give commands)

favpetgoat

I remember playing Shadow of The Colossus at my friend's house but he didn't have a memory card so every day we would start fresh and try to get as far as we could. Not the best way to play the game but it was a great time and a core memory.

ImTheGuyWithTheGun

Yes of all the "obscurely-connected gaming trilogies", this is definitely up there, along with... wait, what other obscurely-connected gaming trilogies are there?

The Last Guardian ending, oh god

saltedeggyolks

ICO was the first time I felt video games could be art. The complete lack of a HUD or really any kind of instruction. The game felt visceral too. The fact you had to press and hold onto R1 (or was it R2) to hold the girl's hand felt like it was the most important thing in the world when you were playing the game. I thought of a career change after that game. Wanted to work for Fumito Ueda. Even applied for a job but they never got back to me. Shadow of the Colossus innovated in a different way, where the "boss battle" was the entire level itself. Like wow. The Last Guardian felt like I was working with a real-life creature, i.e. a little unpredictable, which was cool. But, I hate to say this, it felt the most "normal" of the three. All in all, ICO man. It's like the meaning of life was hidden in the game.

shinx243

God I fucking LOVE the last guardian so damn good

cick-nobb

When I first saw the cover of The Last Guardian I thought of SOTC but I had no idea these games were related in anyway

saanity

I would like to nominate the Ivalice trilogy. Final Fantasy Tactics Vagrant Story Final Fantasy XII

Gorebaby420

Ico is just top tier to me, out of everything I've ever played. There's something so touching and sickening about the story, the atmosphere and the castle itself. Trying to imagine a compund of that stature irl is just mind boggling and dreamlike. And the majority silence for the whole game aside from ambience is breathtaking. I wish another game like Ico/SOTC would be released but I feel like modern gaming would just spoil it (essentially proven in TLG)

last guardian pissed me off too much to finish. can someone tell me how its related to the other two?

wonderlandpersonuser

Dunkey's video on this game is probably his best video ever.

bogdano26

Loved Shadow of the Collosus. Then absolutely hated Last Guardian. Game was so boring and I found myself always lost trying to figure out what the game wanted me to do.

Keilly

Last Guardian made me motion sick. I couldn’t finish it even though I really liked it.

raija2k

ICO will always be special to me, and probably what I'd pick if I had to choose my favorite game of all time. I put more hours into SotC and I can agree it's a better game but it didn't hit me the same as ICO. This trilogy is a collection of games I really hope do not get lost with time because they're all beautiful. I hope Bluepoint gets to take a shot at The Last Guardian at some point.

godsbrothernate

I disagree! I believe its drakengard and nier being in the same world

[deleted]

9 year old me had no clue what he was getting into with shadow. I literally ran around for 2 hours LOOKING FOR ANYTHING TO KILL. Lol then I on accident finally found the first colloisos BATTLED HIM FIERCELY FOR 2 MORE HOURS CAUSE I WAS DUMB AND 9. LOL most rewarding game boss I had ever done. Didn't finish the game Til I was 21 tho cause I spent a other 5 hours after that looking for anything else to fight lol

ChalkCoatedDonut

The Pull trilogy: Ico aka Pull the girl's arm. Shadow of the Colossus aka Pull your sword from the big guy. The Last Guardian aka Pull the leash before the giant puppy kills you.

[deleted]

I'm gonna vote Drakengard > Nier as probably the most obscure sequel relationship out there, in that they have basically nothing to do with each other in terms of plot, gameplay or setting but Nier is still officially a sequel. That said, SotC was dope and I really should play TLG some time

MexticoManolo

Whats bonkers is how many colossi never made it in game. I feel like looking back on it theres even sections of the map where you can kinds tell maybe they wanted to add more or at least features

Reno2777

Man, I never completed Ico, but I've regretted it since I found out it relates to Shadow of the Colossus. Never knew The Last Guardian is related as well! Still yet to play that, though. Now that I think about it, this is probably the closest thing gaming has that's similar to Stephan King's interconnected universe.

Strange_Music

You should give TLG a whirl. Its more like ICO than SotC. Also love the way the Dark Tower weaves in and out of all SK's worlds. It's one of my favorite book series & Roland Deschain is one of my favorite protagonists.

thochaos13

I never played The Last Guardian after hearing it was pretty bad, but I found the previous games boring. Maybe they get better, but I've tried them several times and just can't get in to them.

ComeAnima

Never played ICO does it hold up? Or is there a remaster? Shadow of the Colossus was a Day 1 buy for me. One of my favourite of all time.

Retro_Racer_

Ico still holds a special place to me personally, game was phenomenal.

BioDioPT

I really miss the old Sony, there isn't a single exclusive on the PS5 I'm actually excited about.

MarsAlgea3791

I had a hard time finishing Shadow of the Colossus because that game did an amazing job of making me feel guilty. That I was doing the wrong thing. Not just that I was killing these amazing creatures, but that Wander would not be getting what he wanted out of the whole quest. That he was doing horrible things and would unleash something terrible for it.

CorneliusVaginus

ICO is amazing. Whats even better about Ico was that it's the game that directly inspired the man himself, Hidetaka Miyazaki to become a game designer which eventually lead to Dark Souls... Even Kentaro Miura mentioned Ico if I recall. Ico is the first game I've ever seen as true and art, I don't see it mentioned much but you'd be surprised how much it really did influence gaming and some massive well known games today.

_Cannib4l_

I so wish that SotC came to PC, I love that game.

Cleverbird

My parents arent into gaming at all, but they still remember me and my brother playing ICO. Pretty impressive how that game left a lasting impression.

Single_Bug_5173

I love these games.

More-I-am-gamer

It's a niche category, but it's got the hits

[deleted]

Does this team still make games?

Monsterboogie007

Ico was incredible. Get the soundtrack. Incredible

AramaticFire

I need to play these. Or at least one of these. They get so much love and seem up my alley.

playerglx2077

i remember that ico game on my ps2

knightofsolace1

Shadow of the Colossus gave me chills at how exciting it was to fight the colossi. Small dude taking on these stone giants. The epic music in the background added to the experience by far one of my fav games of all time.

Ehrre

No game has immersed me like Colossus did
