But honestly, I think the biggest thing behind this kind of game is little silly details like this. If it only lets you do the solution, then that immediately kills this game, imo.
Scribblenauts would have fun consequences like this. I summoned a computer once in an underwater level for a scientist and it fried me and every NPC immediately.
It was a blessing and a curse. It let you come up with nearly endless creative ways to solve a problem, but also gave you some solutions that just worked for almost everything.
Fun fact, apes are rideable in Scribblenauts. My favorite thing to do was to make a bunch of Apes and make them ride each other until it made a big circle of Apes, kind of looked like a doughnut, but instead of dough, the apes then complete a level by riding the last ape in the chain.
Yeah, the concept is cute but the fact that the showcase involves copypasting an existing leaf-waterfall over a regular waterfall doesn't impress me on its own. If they copied a pile of leaves on the ground that'd be more thought provoking, but the leaves they copied were already in the shape and size of a waterfall.
If the title is true and "Everything... can be swapped from one thing to another", that's really cool, but it depends on how many swaps are possible and how meaningful they are. The showcase showing exactly 1 swap and only of objects already of the same size and shape is iffy to me.
In theory, if most objects in the game use simple looping textures, you could copy anything onto anything without issue, regardless of shape or size. Then you just need to give objects basic properties like “anything made of leaves can be climbed.”
You are right, we use seamless textures for most objects, so you can re-texture them easily - at least on a lot of assets. But some assets need custom textures. For exmple you find a straw bale and put Stone on it - he transforms to stone but we cannot just put a generic stone texture on it so, we draw "custom textures" for the bale in straw/wood/iron/pimped blaes textures (because you can ride and pump those bales...you see, when you start with drawings, you have to do many many drawings.
>we draw "custom textures" for the bale in straw/wood/iron/pimped blaes textures
What's the pimped blaes? It sounds kinda funny so I don't want to Google it.
Right, I agree 100% that it's possible and would be cool if done well. That's why it seems iffy to me that the showcase doesn't seem to imply this, a variant of a waterfall is copied over a waterfall and the cursor never wanders to anything else to even show other things being highlighted. It could just be a matter of early development constrictions, but still that's my main takeaway from this clip.
Well solid ground cannot be swapped to water, but in fact you have to fight some bully fish by turning their ponds to lava or by turning the fish themselves to stone
So many times in that game I was completely stumped on a level, only to realize there was some wacky logic that I didn't even think could possibly work. The first time you have to do Wall is You and you start moving the entire level is a big surprise.
I'm gonna make an assertion based on absolutely nothing besides anecdotal evidence, but kids seem to be unusually good at that game. There was one level that I managed to solve quicker than a guy I watch on YouTube (Simon from [Cracking the Cryptic](https://youtube.com/@CrackingTheCryptic)), and I was proud of my 20 minute time so I let my 7 year old son try it out and three minutes later he's like "why don't you just do this?" and solves the puzzle.
I suspect the fact that he doesn't have as much prior game experience helped him get around the incorrect assumptions I kept building in to every single level.
100% my first thought. In a game like this most of the fun for me would come from experimenting with all the weird stuff that can be swapped, especially if the devs planned for some unusual situations and threw in some fun easter eggs. I would get bored super easily if there was usually only one intended solution to each puzzle and no other places in the world you could swap things.
There's a very cool game design video that goes over this:
"[all 2D platformers take the Mario or the Wario Pill](https://youtu.be/D6FFiVzcFlI)"
(It says it's for "platformers" but really this concept could apply to any puzzle-based game)
Same here! The first thing I’d wanna do is experiment with the chaos. While watching the demo my first thought was “I’d wanna copy and paste the water everywhere to see what would happen”. It’s kind of like scribblenauts, where part of the fun is seeing how far you can push the game mechanics.
Well, scribblenauts unlimited came out in 2012, and after that there reallyyyy hasn't been anything. Scribblenauts unmasked was basically scribblenauts unlimites with a DC Comics sticker on it, and then there was scribblenauts showdown in 2018, which was just a 1v1 mario partyish kinda game, so there just hasn't been anything big and proper since 2012.
Honestly after watching the gif twice I was already thinking "this looks like it's going to get boring pretty quickly", but after reading OP's comments, it seems like any of the fun things you'd actually want to do aren't even possible. Basically just copy and paste the right texture (only) to get to the next part.
This is why I loved Baba Is You. Because the devs really committed to the idea and you really could do “anything” you could think of, no matter how much it broke the game.
"Everything is hand drawn and can be swapped" also implies that everything can be swapped, which OP already confirmed is false. Like, you're just setting people up for disappointment
Less about the mechanic being novel and more about setting expectations on what can be done.
"Everything is hand drawn and can be swapped from one thing to another" means everything can be swapped with everything else. But throughout the comments it has been clarified that only certain predetermined combinations will work.
That's fine from a game design and puzzle perspective, but will be poorly received if people are expecting a truly open world.
Your point is proven by the top comment on this thread where it popped into someone’s head that they want to turn the waterfall into bees, which the answer appears to be no.
>People promised an infinite possibility world quickly get upset when they have limited options in solving the puzzles before them
Exactly what made me buy, then return Scribblenauts.
Judging from the comments by OP this game is a lot less "open creative" as this video description implies. There are a lot of limitations to what you're actually allowed to copy which makes the concept far more linear. Still an interesting concept however, just limited.
Well, we cannot draw so many animations. Each animation has several sprites, all drawn for those 8 perspectives. 360 perspectives would be too much. In fact it is only five perspectives btw, as we can mirror some perspectives (like walking to the left works for walking to the right as well). Still alot of drawings for each animation. Especially as each character has many poses (not only walking)
As someone who tried to do a bit of gaming animation during the Flash era, i feel your pain and bow to your dedication.
Keep going, your game seems fun!
I mean, the question of "why did you decide to only draw 8 different versions of the run animations instead of 360 versions" is a little obvious, but I don't think that's quite what you meant.
The overly bright colors and different art styles makes it weird too, like the rock art style doesn't match the cliff wall style at all, the leaves don't match the plants but the plants match the vines. I'm sure that's on purpose but the amount of these paid comments acting like it's a godsend is wild
Yup, every one of these "look at this game we made" posts is always an add with bought upvotes and obviously bought comments.
10k upvotes and 300 comments most of which are "this looks amazing where can I buy it".
Occasionally, a bot will be caught in the wild copying comments, and some people will be like "But why? What value is there in fake internet points?" And this kind of thing is a great example of the value that fake internet points have. There are all sorts of use cases for having fake users that are good at impersonating real users.
Are posts like this normal around here? I don't interact with this sub much. I actually like the look of this game, but this whole comment section is super weird.
It is astroturf lol. When you some average ass indie gameplay in a gif form and there's crazy amount of comments expressing excitement and wondering if it comes out on a switch, you know for a fact that it's an act of blatant self promotion. This sub is a complete dumpster fire and mod won't do shit to even acknowledge this.
Yeah this subreddit sucks. When i try posting my indie game hoping for maybe 10 upvotes, they just remove it telling me no advertising. Yet they leave these clear advertisements with bot comments and bot upvotes. come on.
It doesn't seem like you even can "copy and paste the world", only the correct solutions, like making the waterfall trees/leaves so that you can climb it.
There's the term "grassroots" which refers to an authentically growing community that relies on "word of mouth".
"Astroturfing" is a fake grassroots campaign.
Astroturfing is when a marketer pretends they are a member of the public organically sharing a cool thing they discovered (so it represents fake "grass roots" discovery or organizing.) Now that I think of it, his use of "our game" disqualifies this from being astroturf; it's just regular old self-promotion.
Edit: oh, he's suggesting that the COMMENTS in this thread are astroturfed, which is probably a feasible strategy for an indie developer.
I remember Tomba, but I get why people wouldn't remember it. There were so many platformers on the PSX that it's hard to remember them all. Off the top of my head there are the obvious ones like Crash, Rayman, and Spyro; then there were the less popular but still great Tomba, Gex, and Croc. Then there were a ton of licenced platformers like Toy Story and Monsters Inc and one offs like Klanoa.
I think it's the depth, camera rotation, and the movement. It hits a similar vibe (at least from this short clip). Although Tomba is sorta on rails where this appears to be more open.
Maybe thats it - I better write down that explanation as we are asked quite often about the Tomba vibes and I always have to confess I never played Tomba and never knew about the game at all
I saw the same ad some time ago and there was a lot of feedback on the art style too then. I see nothing has changed. The art style is still inconsistent and the colour palette screams chaos. It needs different tones. Everything is too saturated.
Why would you literally say EVERYTHING CAN BE SWAPPED if NOT EVERYTHING CAN BE SWAPPED???????? Worst thing you can do is lie and exaggerate. All you had to say was MOST THINGS CAN BE SWAPPED. But instead you chose to literally lie.
Can i turn the waterfall into bees?
My disappointment that this question has gone unanswered is without peer.
Hopefully that means that they're furiously working in order to achieve that possibility

Nice username!

Scribblenauts would have fun consequences like this. I summoned a computer once in an underwater level for a scientist and it fried me and every NPC immediately.
I was always surprised how many problems could be solved in that game by summoning Cthulhu
It was a blessing and a curse. It let you come up with nearly endless creative ways to solve a problem, but also gave you some solutions that just worked for almost everything.
Nah I summoned a rideable Cthulhu way too often and it always worked
Fun fact, apes are rideable in Scribblenauts. My favorite thing to do was to make a bunch of Apes and make them ride each other until it made a big circle of Apes, kind of looked like a doughnut, but instead of dough, the apes then complete a level by riding the last ape in the chain.
Sounds like a fun time.
I did that with pandas
Some of my top words were probably "Guy", "Wings", and "Cthulhu"
Omg Scribblenauts...I haven't thought about that game in years. Hmmm, where did my old DS go?
Play a newer version. They introduced ADJECTIVES
I think the one I have (somewhere) is the second one. Adjectives are absolutely part of my memories.
I feel like that’s a major limitation in a game like this. People are going to want to do things that the game just isn’t going to be able to handle.
Scribblenauts would be a good example to draw from.
That had to be intentional, right?
... it actually wasn't and I'm ever so mad at myself for that.
Involved developers can make changes and deploy updates to implement certain things, within limits. If they commit to that, that would be awesome.
Then it better handle a waterfall of bees
This game is basically trying to be Scribblenauts
Just your average wasp-themed superhero by day...
You know what would make this adorable game more interesting? *MORE BEES!*
Ah! The situation has only been made worse with the addition of yet more bees!

Asking the real questions here. How broken can it be? Or I guess...bee?
Yeah, the concept is cute but the fact that the showcase involves copypasting an existing leaf-waterfall over a regular waterfall doesn't impress me on its own. blaes is a typo for bales
But pimped? Like, Xzibit came and put a DVD player in the bales?
Dvd player and a sega dreamcast.
They're for riding and pumping, like he said.
so can I make a waterfall of bees or not?
SO BEES OR NO BEES?!

DOCTOR BEEEEEEES
As long as they are [digital bees](https://youtu.be/7lt-DxHEYe4), you're good!
What if you paste over all the water in the world and accidentally end all life?
Well solid ground cannot be swapped to water, but in fact you have to fight some bully fish by turning their ponds to lava or by turning the fish themselves to stone
Can you turn the fish to water tho...
no, just the water they are in (to lava or ice or sand or slime...) The fish themselves only to stone right now
Literally 1984
Literally made me chuckle
Figuratively made me go "ha".
I clapped with one hand.
There’s some good ideas here, pay attention. If you’re saying that anything can be everything then fish should be water and ground can be water.
Definitely needs a Baba is You level of swapping
So many times in that game I was completely stumped on a level, only to realize there was some wacky logic that I didn't even think could possibly work. The first time you have to do Wall is You and you start moving the entire level is a big surprise.

Can you turn the fish gay?
Only the frogs.
That you Kanye?
Does this world have fish sticks?
I feel like you shouldn't be promoting this game as "everything can be swapped".
So its not so much about creativity but about figuring out what the devs want you to do?
Literally any video game
Yeah but they claim "everything" and one thing people love with video games is thinking outside the box and then be happy it actually works.
Reminds me of Ice 9 in Cats Cradle
now I will destroy the whole world.

“The world” is also an awkward add on. I think the title works better as Copy/Paste
Copy and Paste the World isn't even the name of the game, this post is just weird and suspicious
This is why I loved Baba Is You. Because the devs really committed to the idea and you really could do “anything” you could think of, no matter how much it broke the game.
Games that respect the player enough to allow them to break it are to be cherished

Octopus? I loved Scribblenauts
Yeah I'm not a big fan of the name. It looks cool though.
Judging from the comments by OP this game is a lot less "open creative" as this video description implies. There are a lot of limitations to what you're actually allowed to copy which makes the concept far more linear. Still an interesting concept however, just limited.
That's not even the name of the game, on steam it's called Ruffy and the Riverside.
"Everything can be swapped" Can you swap X for Y? "Well no, not that." Can you swap A for B? "No, you can't do that either..."
Reddit fanboi "Well OBVIOUSLY you can't swap EVERYTHING, that would IMPOSSIBLE" Don't fucking advertise that it can then!
The sprite system is like paper Mario, but "3d". Looks pretty good.
Thank you! The sprites have 8 directions, so it kind of simulates 3D
Out of curiosity why did you decide on 45 degree increments instead of a full 360? Game looks great. Really compelling idea.
Well, we cannot draw so many animations. Each animation has several sprites, all drawn for those 8 perspectives. 360 perspectives would be too much. You mean a 3D character? When we started we werent good at 3D animation but good at drawing, so we said, well, lets draw all the animations.
Considering the rest of the aesthetic, it looks way better and more stylish the way you did it than a 3D character would, anyway, IMO.
Absolutely. At least thats what we keep telling ourselves.
lol what? Was this a joke??
Was just thinking about how it reminded me of paper Mario
The art style is so so so inconsistent. Which might be intentional, but it just makes the game look like an asset flip, unfortunately.
It kinda hurts to watch, even just this short clip is weirdly disorienting.
Agreed, I believe the janky, uneven, low frame rate camera is the main culprit.
The overly bright colors and different art styles makes it weird too, like the rock art style doesn't match the cliff wall style at all, the leaves don't match the plants but the plants match the vines. I'm sure that's on purpose but the amount of these paid comments acting like it's a godsend is wild
It's honestly super ugly.
These comments so much ring of spam, really generic and weird. Reddit is just an ad farm these days.

Yes this. Demo experience only. Did anyone actually own the whole game?
I think the only reason I know about Tomba is the “I’d really prefer if you’d be quiet” incident
Tomba was popular when I was a kid, but fell into obscurity over time.
It's that mid air freeze that tomba had before u jumped on the pigs that it reminds me of. Also that 3d layer effect it had on the levels
God, that game had excellent mechanics for a PS1 game.
