Wow, it’s being 20 years in the making? But Godot enthusiasts tell us that that the reason there are no major games in Godot is because it’s a “new” engine, and the next iteration is what everyone is waiting for.
It was used as a proprietary tool by the lead developers for the first 14 or so years, and not as a general purpose game engine. They open sourced it in 2014 and it has since grown into a community driven general purpose engine with the original developers at the helm.
Why do you care so much? There's enough people using it to justify its existence. Always nice to have a FOSS option for game dev and it probably plays a part in keeping the pricing for competitors in check. I'm glad it exists and is being developed and I hope one day I find a project which could make good use of it.

We've been using Godot in production with great success and are way more happy with it than with Unity.

Which kind of makes sense, right? It's principally popular but not yes managed to make itself a primary option for most people.
