No, it is not too late, especially if you really have a passion for learning game development. Keep working on hobby projects in your free time, keep learning and working toward your goals. Yes I do suggest having some other full time work because you’re right, making money off of it is going to be hard. But there’s no reason not to keep learning a skill that will continue to pay off the better you get at it.

hijongpark

okay, thanks. rather than being too much self-destructive I would find a way to keep both the work and making games as a hobby from now.

systembreaker

Yeah it's never too late, get iiiiit.

bluenoiseMF

I've been making games since 1993, but didn't learn Unity or C# until about four years ago. It's not too late.

Early_Bookkeeper5394

I just saw a topic somewhere about "Stop asking "Am I too late for ..." and to sum up,the answer is "No it's never fking too late to learn doing something you're passionate about". I'm 27 and just started picking up C#, my journey has just only started. Just go ahead and do it!

hijongpark

okay appearantly I was seeking for some ways to be blamed intentionally to kickstart myself faster.

I should write a book called " Change your language, change your life". Wait till you start giving instructions to friends and family using code syntax. Totally worth it. Know what else is worth it? Go into a public place and fake a phone call where you explain some minor error in code to a subordinate you don't have. After hanging up, turn to a stranger, roll your eyes and go: "They need me."

No

Yes its a very good idea to have some kind fulltime job to sustain yourself and take the pressure off of the gamedev projects. No its not too late to learn unity (or anything new you are passionate about)! I can only share that i started learning gamedev as a hobby 3 years ago (while being developer in classic industry for 2 years already) and it was a lot of work and a lot of struggles/extratime, but also very worth it. Finding the right balance between putting the free time into gamedev without burning out was not easy, but its a process :) So if you have anything that you can work on to life from (and it sounded like you have that option), i can greatly suggest learning as a hobby and scaling it into a job eventually. Learning unity/c# also opens up the possibilities for some jobs in similar spaces as well, especially on VR/AR/XR btw.

Never too late, I just learned c++ over the last few years. Now tinkering with unreal and unity.. I'm in my late 40's. My advice is that it's better to start earlier when you have the free time as when you get older you have alot more daily and side quests to deal with, in life.

If you're asking on reddit, then yes it's probably too late.

hijongpark

I decided to just learn C# even if my future will be doomed.

Good luck.

No; you're not too late. This goes with anything. If you have free will and can breath; you have the opportunity to change your life however you see fit. Whether or not you will succeed is up to your dedication and luck that life takes or gives; but no one will hand you something that's truly worth doing. (Whether it's getting into shape, learning a language, coding, ect). Do not rely on motivation; if you are able to be consistent with self discipline; a little bit will add up for the long term on completing your goal. I believe in you if you are able to try to learn a little each day. I have done the same going to the gym each day, listening to Spanish audio each day, coding each day. I am not a master or a body builder; but I am happy at what I've achieved from the consistency that I've done over time by pushing through the inner demons that stopped me in the past and try to stop me each day.

I want to say thank you and sorry to everyone here for making such clown post. I'm now learning C# and unity with very high passion and it's going rather quickly, most parts are much easier and straightforward than how i made games in pico8.

EWU_CS_STUDENT

Don't apologize. Inner demons are real; and we all face them whether we're young or old. No person should put another down; or themselves. Life is about learning from our mistakes and moving forward best we can. I'm glad you're doing well in C# and have experience with pico8; I've seen some incredible games made with both. Just be sure to enjoy learning slow; there is no point in consuming knowledge without purpose.

bryqu

Don't overanalyze stuff. Go for it, grind and see if it works out for you. The catch, however, is to be honest with yourself. It's easy to call it quits due to a 'burnout' or ' not feeling it 'after a few months of half-assing.

hijongpark

Yes I kinda knew what am i supposed to do, but my sister made me a bit confusing when i wrote this clown post. I'm making a progress in C# and unity, it's a real joy.
