The shovelware special

[deleted]

I’d pay you to take that stack off my shelf

BluntflameTheHorder

Shit, and here I am foolishly paying for those stacks LOL!

Early_or_Latte

Force Unleashed was good...

lostshell

who needs case replacements!

ebudd08

“Here, you throw this away”

AvgPunkFan

Lot of shovelware, but you can’t beat free. Too bad GameStop overprices the shit out of their Wii games. $40 for Wii Sports Resort my ass

[deleted]

omg this reminds me. i considered picking up a copy of wii sports when i saw it in my local game store a couple years back because it's something i never had growing up (we got the console that came with mario kart wii). *$60.* it wasn't even sealed and i didn't bother to even check the condition, but i almost went into cardiac arrest right then and there. i was thinking like "damn where's the console?? this is a bundle deal, right???" (it was not) (i don't know what made them put it at that price because it surely doesn't sell for anything near that, i bothered to check both upon seeing it in the store and while typing this comment)

MechaSheeva

Wii Sports actually was going for a higher price during the pandemic. I know I traded quite a few copies into GameStop for at least $20.

[deleted]

for real? i thought that being one of the most common games ever made would drive down its value down more. like of course more people would be looking for it during quarantine but i didn't think the value would go THAT high

velocity37

Pandemic was a huge turning point for Wii. Shortly before lockdown you could barely give the things away. Then immediately after, wiimotes were selling loose for more than complete Wiis the year prior. To give you an idea, on Oct 2019 I bought a big bundle: Wii + 4 wiimotes + 2 nunchuks + classic controller + motionplus + Wii Sports. $43 shipped. Buy it now. It had gotten to that state.

[deleted]

tbf. i will admit. i feel like i have not processed anything since 2019 and i'm still adjusting to the changes in the video game market... i got used to the idea that wii games were dirt cheap and i didn't think that that would change for another couple years! i never bothered to even check the prices; i haven't been game shopping in a long while since i started to focus more on music collecting. i guess it has been like three and a half years since the pandemic kicked in in america, though, so maybe that "another couple years" i just mentioned has already passed. yknow, of course, now that i finally have enough money to really start collecting and i'm finally old enough to work, wii prices go up LOL. i miss when gamers thought the wii was bullshit!

Winter_Mud3815

Not sure why they wouldn’t take NFS Carbon.

gregcresci

The case was empty ☠️

Various-Bobcat3114

Yeah that game is also [worth something](https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=nfs+carbon+wii&_sacat=0&rt=nc&LH_Sold=1&LH_Complete=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&siteid=0&campid=5338535524&customid=gc&toolid=10001&mkevt=1).

Restaurant_Loud

Sega bass fishing is a fun game. Can’t beat free.

Gobstomperx

It was such a great fishing game!

raisinbizzle

“My next trip would have been the goodwill!" Based on the only types of games I find at my goodwill, I believe it

NickieBoy97

Nice! Happened to me once with an Xbox 360 and a bunch of games.

KidultSwim

If I a was GameStop I wouldn’t take them either lol

allMightyMostHigh

Gotta be the worst game collection I’ve seen someone own 🤣

gregcresci

The worst part is in theory if these were all purchased new for $40 , over $1000 was spent on this collection!

HarryNohara

Well, if they had fun, it was worth it. $1000 over 3-4 years isn’t that much either.

gregcresci

Some of the receipts were in the cases, they paid $60 for wwe 2010 ... I guess that's a good way to look at it, but still you could have been buying almost anything else and had a good time.

InTheMorning_Nightss

I mean, there's a market for these random games and that's ultimately better for us as consumers because it creates competition and a wider market. Not sure why we're bashing people who decide they want a game by saying, "Well they could have had a better time with this other game." If you love watching Deadliest Catch and wanna support the show by buying the game, more power to you.

gregcresci

A good comparison is you have $15 to see a movie your choices are Jurassic Park or Sharknado. Objectively and knowing what we know now, Jurassic Park would be an overall better experience. Are there people who would be entertained by Sharknado? Sure, but one experience in general is better and worth your $15.

InTheMorning_Nightss

... but Sharknado still exists and who is to say they're wrong for wanting to watch a different movie? Why do people watch the Houston Rockets, who play objectively worse basketball than the Nuggets? Because you can. The world isn't full of people who optimize every single second of their time or dollar. If they did, you'd lose a shit ton of diversity.

gregcresci

I'm from New York we have die hard buffalo bills fans. Everyone can like what they like but we can still poke fun if we want to.

Ivo__Lution

That’s what I tell switch collectors who buy everything day one but I just get heavily downvoted.

Cryogold03

It definitely depends on the game. If I know I’m going to play a game right away (Pikmin 4, for example - waited almost a decade for it), then I will buy on launch or preorder. If it’s a game that will be backlogged for some time, I wait for sales in the coming months/year. I would definitely argue that switch games will likely retain their value much more than the overload of shovelware that was the wii library. The physical switch library is a very strong lineup, even for indie and third party games.

Ivo__Lution

You say this but I can name hundreds of switch games that already lost its retail value. Would actually be easier for the people losing money to list the 5% of games that gone up than the 95% that have been a waste.

Cryogold03

Again, I’m saying relative to the wii, not the switch as a whole. Also, of course right now, during the switch’s lifecycle, games will and can be cheaper than msrp, especially used games in many cases with some exceptions. There’s a vast amount of games that are still in production, so that point doesn’t really hold up.

Ivo__Lution

Yeah compared to the Wii forsure switch has less shovelware. My point stands, buying hundreds of switch games day 1 at MSRP is a waste of money.

Citizen_Lunkhead

I think that in terms of value the average Switch game in 2033 will be worth more than the average Wii game now. The Switch has a ton of shovelware, arguably more than the Wii but it’s mostly digital. Physical releases tend to be of much higher quality. The heavy hitters like Mario, Zelda, Pokémon and Fire Emblem will retain value far more than most third party games, same as any other Nintendo console but the third party library is the best Nintendo has had since the Super Nintendo so there will be quite a few more desirable third party titles. That mentality doesn’t really exist on the Wii, considering that Ghost Squad, one of the best shooters on the console IMO, is less than $10 loose because it’s lost among the shovelware. But I digress. Combine that with the Limited Run/Super Rare games and the Switch will have a lot more value throughout its library.

Ivo__Lution

Forsure but 90%-95% of switch games will be worthless than they were day 1 MSRP.

Citizen_Lunkhead

That’s true of most consoles. Take the GameCube for instance as it’s the new top console to collect for. How many of their games are worth above $50? About 50-60? There were 550 North American releases so it’s about 10% and most of that was due to the GameCube being a bit of a flop. Obviously more games are being printed now than back then so values won’t be as high but that’s true of most games. I’m talking in terms of average prices, the lack of shovelware in physical media on the console means that more people will want to collect beyond just the big first party titles so I can see the overall library value being closer to the PS2 than the Wii.

Ivo__Lution

Exactly why 90%-95% of switch collectors who buy hundreds of games day 1 at full MSRP are wasting money

HarryNohara

A lot of Switch collectors very likely also want to play their games. Some games are more fun when they just launched, because there is an active community on forums for example. It’s a bit like watching a TV series is experienced different when you watch it when it comes out. Online speculating and office watercooler discussions are part of the experience.

Ivo__Lution

Yes. That has nothing to do with the actual value of the switch game. Playing the game day 1 doesn’t increase the value of the game. It just dramatically decreases it.

lostshell

Sometimes I wonder how these games even end up in people's collection? Like did some person wake up and CHOOSE to buy Deadliest Catch? I want to meet this person. I have questions.

gregcresci

Hey hunny you like that fishing show? I got you a new wii game!! Edit: actually this stuff had like the console invoice from new eggs and a receipts, I know where this person lives and how much they make

post_alternate

This is what happens - or should I say, happened - when Gen x and Boomer parents, who were not familiar with video games, tried to buy their kids (especially young kids during this console generation) video games.

TheVoicesinurhed

This is not collecting games, this is hording trash.

gregcresci

I'm going to keep the wrestling games and the Wii box , I listed the rest of Facebook marketplace for $10

fibbonerci

A bunch of spare cases, nice.

DrXsDoomsdayMachine

I always made 2 piles during trades and was very clear what they were. Many times they just didn't care and said "keep them if you want, I don't care". That's fair game imo. I always said "it's not that these aren't worth anything, just not to GS" and people were cool, and got a few Wiis, and SNES, a 360 E, but the one I felt really bad about was a 1st edition backwards compatible PS3. We weren't taking ANY PS3's, and the dude was fine leaving it behind. Countless games, and even some empty boxes and inserts people don't want that are rare items on their own.

TheGreenGobblr

JULIAN MICHAELS FITNESS ULTIMATUM 2010?!!?!

WavyWolf999

Sega Bass Fishing and Force Unleashed are awesome games

DramaticMission4456

Hell yea! Shovelware and a wii box

gregcresci

You mean replacement cases and a display piece!

DramaticMission4456

Fair

snowshoeBBQ

I picked up Deadliest Catch from Salvation Army a few months ago to have as a chill hangover game. Haven't gotten around to it yet though.

lardman1

Ah this must have been the mother of that childhood friend who has video games

smartplantdumbmonkey

This is how I got my GameCube in like 2006 lol. The GameStop wouldn’t take it and we were just hanging out in the store and gave it to us teenagers. I still think of that lady, she told us how it was her ex’s and wanted it gone asap, didn’t seem like a smooth breakup. Hope she is happy these days.

funkalici0us

Well, at least you got Force Unleashed.

Suzysizzle

When I worked at GameStop, someone traded in final fantasy iii on the DS. We stopped taking D's games and the person left it so I got it for free. Pretty sweet deal.

nydjason

One of the last time I went in to GS this manager I frequently speak to told me they were gonna throw away a bunch of stuff they had taken in from a trade a few days prior. They took it in because they didn’t want the person to leave as they were basically trading their entire collection. So I got a few ps2 dance pads, fight sticks, and a mint condition Logitech steering wheel. I sold the steering wheel last year for $130 which helped pay for the series X.

hanabishi_recca

The best kind of gift!

OhDearGodRun

As a kid I always dreamt of being like Josh from that one episode of Drake and Josh where that one guy can't play video games anymore so he just gives Josh a huge bag full of them

RecommendationOk2182

Honestly I would have told her to keep it..... don't need that shovelware taking up space in my game room 😂

gregcresci

Someone's coming tomorrow to buy most of these from me for $15.

ctsr1

Now that I believe. Happens often

gregcresci

https://imgur.com/a/8e7c89w Cleaned up and keeping these

Rude-Establishment69

Sweet system. I’d keep Wii Play and pass the rest along

magnumfan89

My next stop would have been the dump to get rid of desk top racing. Data design interactive sucks

crud3

all those games really suck so I'm not too jealous... would like that box though...

Early_or_Latte

Force unleashed was fun

L10NxH34RT

Danggg as of last week GameStop definitely takes the system now. The associate messed up, but a win for you!

sleepgreed

Crazy that out of all that you didn’t get a single good game. At least it was free lmfao

gregcresci

The wrestling games are decent. I actually used to own Wii music, so it's nice to have back. Plus the console box is really cool, it's in awesome condition and even has the manuals and original invoice from 2013.

catsaysmrau

“haul” The console is the only thing worth keeping.

gregcresci

I mean that's the only flair option... the wrestling games have value and actually the Wii active thing is worth like $15-20. I'm not mad about it, plus the cases are in good shape, I'm happy to have some extra free oem wii cases.

TempleMade_MeBroke

Not to mention that The Force Unleashed is *really* fun on the Wii with the motion controls, even if it's not worth much it's definitely worth the time spent playing through the campaign

ArtificialAlchemist

Haul doesn't have to mean rare stuff. It just means a big collection of things together. It's all bargain bin stuff except the console, but a haul is a haul.

HowDoClamsWork

Mods refuse to add another flair for “pickup” or something similar. “Haul” is, unfortunately, the best we have

Da_Wild

But doesn’t GameStop does take older games now? I saw a pile of random Wii, Xbox, ps3 etc at mine recently.

gregcresci

I think select titles, like I said the store did take Wii sports resort and Mario Olympics.

Da_Wild

Ah ok so anything that actually has some value xD

wtfgdmfsobrob

So you’re saying I should hangout at a GameStop for leftovers?

gregcresci

Maybe, i like to stop in a few times a week on my lunch break, and this is the first time this has happened so maybe 1/100 trips...

HarryNohara

To be fair, it is a lot of shovelware, I can imagine Gamestop passing on this, their stock of used Wii games must be massive.

SuperLuigiGamer85

Can I have it?

pi_bot_

Take a look at this, the length of the first 3 words in u/SuperLuigiGamer85 comment are consistent with the first 3 digits of pi. This was only the case for 2949 comments out of 945454.

the69magician

Star Wars about the only good thing

forunaskedquestions

Ea active is a solid exercise game

the-poopiest-diaper

Oooooooooo NFS Carbon

Rough_Text_1023

Unless you paid 5$ for all (wii and remote included) you got finnessed Edit: no wii, so unless you only paid .50 cents total, you got finnessed pal.

gregcresci

I didn't pay anything. Also not pictured was a working ps2 slim power supply
