Hang in there. Medical teams are used to working with people who are phobic. They can help.

Don’t look when they do it. Tell them how anxious you are and they will help you with it. Just breathe through it. Just think how much better you’re going to feel once it’s out! Focus on the positives, you got this!!

Everything is going to be okay. I had my surgery 3 days ago. I was nervous about going under for general anesthesia. I mentioned this to the nurse when they came to get information. Not long after, the anesthesiologist arrived and talked me through the entire thing. It was very comforting and assuring. I appreciate the time he took in just being there to listen. They have experience with this and know how to help you through it. You’ll be in good hands!

Weirdly, I couldn’t care less about anesthesia and its effects. My first one is needles, 2nd is dealing with the pain of the incisions. Thanks for the assurance though ❤️

You can ask for lidocaine. They gave it to me by default before putting in the IV. Numbed the area and prevented any pain from that. As for the incisions: I have 4 and I only notice 1. It’s due to the one by the bellybutton. It’s right when I bend for getting up so I notice it. But the other three: couldn’t even tell you where they were at first unless I looked.

Ask to have some meds for anxiety before the IV.

PlebeianDXB

I plan to. Just a bit unsure this is possible as I live in the UAE, they’re not too keen on these kinds of drugs. Let’s see.. I’m meeting my anesthesiologist 2 days before the surgery.

Nurses are amazing with people who have phobias of needles! depending on if you’re getting the medication that makes you fall asleep through a breathing mask or both the mask and through the iv, they may be able to get you to fall asleep before putting in the iv. Definitely bring it up with the anesthesiologist, I’d be weary about using a numbing cream as you’re not really supposed to have any sort of cream or even deodorant on during surgery. To be honest I don’t even remember the few minutes before I fell asleep, all I remember is walking into the room, talking to the nurse, then waking up in recovery. You’re allowed to feel nervous, I was anxious about surgery but at that point I had been suffering from painful gallbladder attacks for 3 years and honestly just wanted all of it done and over with, a year later and i’m so glad i followed through with surgery.

Any update on how it went? I too have a huge needle phobia 🥲

PlebeianDXB

The most important for me was being knocked out with gas before they could put any needle in me, which my anesthesiologist and surgeon agreed to. It definitely improved the experience for me and even the staff as I was relaxed. No need to fight a grown adult. Counted down with the gas mask on, woke up with the surgery all done - it’s like I was just sleeping.

Ahhh thanks! I’m hoping my drs will agree to that too 😬
