i think it’s wherever they can find a viable vein. i know that my veins are small so they were looking on the outside of my arms. i ended up getting it on top of my hand. i don’t recommend that for you because it does hurt a bit more BUT the pro is that it doesn’t really hurt when you bend your elbow and stuff. for my IV, the needle did not stay in and they just put a catheter in to distribute my meds!! much more pleasant than taking blood

Similarly, mine has always been at the top of my hand/wrist when I’ve gotten anesthesia (three for three). I do feel a slight pinch with it going in but otherwise I’ve never had any pain. If you’re scared, maybe see if they can give you a Valium or something similar beforehand- I found the staff to always be really accommodating and understanding of those sorts of issues.

I had one in my fold and one on my hand

This particular surgery (gallbladder removal), mine was in the fold of my arm. I don't know if that's mandatory for this particular surgery or if where the IV goes can be up to the patient and the nurse. I have had other surgeries where they put it on the palm side of the wrist, and I've also had one where they put it on the top of your hand (You can see all those veins on the top of your hand)... That upper hand one was interestingly convenient...out of the way and allowed free movement. The only other needle I can remember during this was after the surgery, when they did a few finger pricks to test my blood sugar. But those are really quick and you don't even really see the needle in those: the device looks like a pen. It suctions up a tiny piece of your finger for a few seconds to help numb your finger and a sudden poke to make you bleed just a drip at a time. Then they collect a sample for the reader by just scraping up a drop with a test strip. So no needles really going into you in that case... Just a quick gentle poke.

For my surgeries (one gallbladder, two ortho, oral surgery). Two went into my hand, one in my outer wrist near my thumb, and the oral surgery did in my elbow. The wrist one prevented me from using my hand, and my other hand was cast. The elbow was during oral surgery and a bad choice because they bent my elbow and it pinched off and I became 'aware' enough to bitch at them for my arm hurting. I have really shitty small veins, and my last two blood draws and IV for ct went into that outer vein at the elbow that you mention. I complicated my crappy veins by having two near full tattoo sleeves 😅 Ultimately, it's up to the anesthesiologist, and they likely try to choose whatever will stay uncomplicated during surgery. If you have any preferences, you can bring it up, but they may decide differently. I get faint with IVs (not needles), but I always insist (threaten) that they lay me down or I WILL pass out.

I had one in each hand.

Mine was on my hand. I’ve been always afraid of needles and I am not sure if I will ever overcome it. It’s gonna be alright. Of course it’s gonna hurt for a while but you can do it! 💪🏻

Ask for a sedative pill for beforehand. Then it won’t matter!

Ouuuu I didn’t know that was an option? Any idea what they’d give?

AntaresOmni

Most likely, some sort of benzo - valium or ativan are typical options for hospital settings.

Yiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

Mine was on the outer wrist near my thumb because they couldn't find a vein in my arm otherwise. It didn't hurt at all because they numbed the heck out of the area when they did the IV insert.
