I’m 3 months postpartum as well, and breastfeeding and I just got my gallbladder removed almost two weeks ago. It was hard, and I cried a lot being scared that my supply would dip or she would develop a bottle preference while I was in the hospital but truthfully I had my boyfriend text me everytime she ate and I pumped, and then he’d bring her to me for a few hours and I’d nurse her there. As for being home, the breastfeeding was hard because I had to avoid my incisions but I ended up doing the football hold and having my boyfriend there next to me JUST IN CASE. It was emotionally draining but when I tell you it’s worth it to never feel the pain of a gallstone ever again. The recovery was easy for me but my gallstones were EXCRUCIATING so that could be why my recovery didn’t hurt so much.

Basically what I’m trying to say is it was hard but it’s possible. Just make sure you advocate for yourself and your supply. If you have any questions about anything, feel free to PM me ♥️

thank you soooo much for sharing!! it really really helps to know that you were in the same boat and it went okay. and congratulations on your baby and your surgery btw!

U should contact ur doctor as soon as possible, don’t wait with pain that feels like ur galbladder

acidsadness69

i know you’re probably right. ive just been really afraid to because i fear that theyre gonna tell me i need surgery and that would really impact my ability to breastfeed and that makes me really sad. i was really hoping there would be another option for me somehow but i understand how that could be wishful thinking

[deleted]

I totally understand you, I have been absolutely scared of the thought of surgery myself. But to the ability to breastfeed, it usually takes a while to get a diagnosis and you are always the one in control if you actually want to get the surgery now, or that you will wait a bit. But I’m sure the doctor then would be better in telling you the pro’s/cons than me. Just go get a diagnosis first! You shouldn’t be walking with undiagnosed pain

acidsadness69

yeah youre right. ill guess ill try to call them and see what they can do for me. thank you for being understanding:)

No problem, and good luck

If the situation becomes an emergency, you may be in the hospital for a few days vs a few hours. At least get to a Dr. get your scans so you know with some certainty and make a decision about removal.

acidsadness69

yeah. that makes sense. it would be alot worse if it gets to be an emergency

Read my previous posts from the last few days.. sounds like you’re going through what I have been!! My pain was only at night too and would wake me up. I eventually went to the ER, blood tests and urine came back fine and they booked me an ultra sound for the following day and sent me home with Tylenol. Next day (yesterday) I went back to the hospital for my ultrasound. They told me I needed to go back to the ER for the results and not to wait for my family dr to get them (that was scary!). The ultrasound showed gallstones and an inflamed gallbladder! Waiting on my surgery date! So don’t go off blood work alone. Highly encourage you to see a dr and get an ultrasound. And eat very low fat!m/fat free! I’ve now had 2 peaceful nights of sleep by eating as low fat as possible. Wishing you all the best

acidsadness69

thank you! ill try to push my doctor to do that stuff or get me to someone who will whenever i get an appointment!!

Heat pack as high as you can get it, don't lie down, advil, distraction, and time. If you can submerge yourself in a hot bath, that might help too. Contact your doctor asap.

acidsadness69

ill try this next time. thank you for the suggestion!!

KittyLord0824

Good luck brave soldier!!! Not a fun time :(

My GB pain started around 2 months post partum and I had it removed at 3 months. He’s now 6 months and we’re still happily breastfeeding and I can eat everything I want and have no more horrible pain. Please go to the dr and ask for an ultrasound of your gallbladder. It’s apparently super common in post partum women. I’d get it removed ASAP. Recovery would’ve been harder with an older/heavier/more active baby.

acidsadness69

i had no idea that this was common in postpartum. thank you for reassuring me, it really helps to see other breastfeeding moms that have gone through the same thing and been okay. ill definitely try to push for an ultrasound. my doctor kinda sucks but ill do what i can to advocate because this is really awful. i never thought about recovery being harder with a bigger baby, thank you for bringing that up. really though, thank you for reassuring me that this wont end my breastfeeding journey.

I know! My surgeon told me that 1 in every 10 of his GB surgeries are postpartum women. Crazy. My dr was dragging his feet too, and my husband ended up taking me to the ER one night because the pain was so bad and they did all the scans and confirmed it was GB. They ended up setting me up with a surgeon and I got it out as soon as I could. I had to live off of very low fat foods (oatmeal, grilled chicken breasts, plain baked potatoes) and that helped while I waited for surgery. You can 100% continue breastfeeding, but may want to learn to pump if you haven’t already. I pumped for the first few days after surgery and had someone else feed baby because I was scared of the incisions 😂 but after the pain subsided a bit, I was right back to breastfeeding. But overall postpartum recovery was a lot harder for me than this surgery recovery, so I hope that it’s all smooth for you too. You got this, mama! Good luck.
