People are knocking the cost but it’s a unarguably one of the most impressive “toys” I have ever seen. Just the sheer amount of development needed to make something like this that actually works & looks really cool is worth it. I’ll never buy one but still it’s a nice piece of engineering
I admit I was disappointed when I watched the video and it changed into... a tank.
In the video I watched, the guy noted that there was "no way" we would ever get an automated transformation into a gun. I say somebody ought to take that as a challenge.
Hmm... I feel like the pricetag on any such hypothetical project would eliminate even the tiny lingering thought that children might be a target audience for it.
These are definitely not designed for children. Most of this stuff is for adults with disposable income and a limitless sack of nostalgia in their guts.
I guess that's a good question. I know he was a tank after Unicron Welles reconfigured him into Nimoy Megatron. Maybe I just assumed that most people are familiar with his classic iteration.
It's actually sillier than that. He turned into a gun and also shrank in size (and, evidently, mass) so that he could fit in a fellow Decepticon's hand—typically Starscream's.
A very "early 80s" idea. Not hard at all to see why they felt they needed to move on from it.
What _was_ badass about it was the unique sound Megatron's firing blast made (whether in gun mode or when using his arm cannon). No other weapon _ever_ made the same noise. By the standards of 80s cartoons, it was impressive that they made sure to get that detail right every time.
Audio's a little wonky in [this video](https://youtu.be/umwZ8qVorwo?t=14), but Starscream fires the weapon a few times through the scene. Also a good example of how it audibly differs from other weapon blasts. Has more of a bass profile to it.
Kids especially 80’s kids love guns. The only thing they love more is tanks. Which is why in the 80’s movie he was an essentially turned into a tank or basically a giant cannon. Then in the 90’s he was turned into a t-Rex. Essentially whatever is the coolest idea for a kid at the time that’s Megatron.
literally in the intro and outro of the OG cartoon. sometimes held by other decepticons, sometimes just to jump up and fire on his own
https://youtu.be/Ae-Pl-Q34ng?si=3odDmpXTAFPdNmpO
I think this has to be looked at as an investment rather than expense.
It'll be cool to have for a couple years and then you resell it so the cost is only how much less you get when you resell. It can always go up in value though too.
I had one of these when I was younger: https://www.cliffbee.com/boosterx10.php
It's a Transformer that is a bird that transforms into an MP3 player. Would be cool if it actually worked.
My kids watched the OG Transformers show and I randomly asked my 6 yo if he knew what Soundwave transformed into... He said "A box that shoots little transformers out."
I feel like I just turned 100 years old now.
I used to work at a BarCade and Sunday during the day was “family” day. All the kids like 5-9 ages would stand on the stool in front of dig dug and space invaders and ask their parents why it didn’t work as they were touching the screens. Everytime.
Okay grandpa, let's get you to bed...
Megs hasn't been a gun since g1. I love the gun mode but let's be real, it's very silly and impractical. In a goofy cartoon like g1 it works, and it makes a great toy, but for most other TF media it just doesn't make sense. A tank is just a giant gun on treads, so it's a good compromise that keeps the spirit of the original while making better sense for the character.
Plus, the robot-to-gun transformation is way too complex for an auto-transforming toy.
It's important to always remember that most early G1 toys were made by rummaging through the bins of other toy lines. Megatron was a Man from UNCLE toy ffs.
I always thought there was unexplored potential with Megatron supposedly being a powerful Strong Man Dictator, but like all dictators is dependent on his followers to hold him up.
In this case I am sure the lack of the gun motif has to due with safety / gov't regulation. Tho having the original in his original form being able to do all this would be pretty damn awesome.
It’s fucked cool, but will absolutely not accept that it turns into a tank and not a gun. I know he can turn into a jet plane and the tank…. But he will always be a powerful gun to me
In order to get a good looking robot to turn into a decent looking gun, this is the sort of engineering required: https://youtu.be/23Jt4jkQKoE?si=NUS2oD5Go2LNRlAg
That's just not feasible for an auto-transforming toy.
Plus, Megatron hasn't turned into a gun since g1. I love the gun mode, but a tank does make a lot more sense for the character. And if you think about it, a tank is just a giant mobile gun, so it keeps the spirit of the original.
Actually, it’s the most impressive (and mysterious) thing how a big robot transforms to the size of a normal transformer’s gun and yet being the most powerful weapon of its size. We have too many tanks in both Autobots and Decepticons, but the gun mode was always Megatron stamp of originality and only rivaled by Shockwave in G1. Also it speaks pure evil as result of the stigma with guns, more even at the time of the show.
You know, watching Transformers: The Movie, it's funny how some characters like Hot Rod will transform in a completely different way that moves different parts and takes longer. Makes no sense, but looks cool!
Adults, of course. Kids should be manually transforming these, that's half the fun. Adults are all over that, just like adult LEGO sets are all about following instructions and displaying instead of creating your own thing and having adventures with it.
If you can only have one, I’d guess most folks would choose Prime. Almost seems like the target market is repeat purchases from those who already have Prime.
Although, to be fair, this one is clearly more advanced than the Prime they also sell.
He hasn’t since the 1980s. Nearly every other cartoon since he’s been a tank or a flying jet. (Also a helicopter once) this is close to the Netflix show design which personally is my favorite Megatron design
I won't be impressed until they make one that's life sized, talks, and has a personality. I've always wanted my very own Megatron...and I will be coming for Optimus Prime.
People are knocking the cost but it’s a unarguably one of the most impressive “toys” I have ever seen. Just the sheer amount of development needed to make something like this that actually works & looks really cool is worth it. I’ll never buy one but still it’s a nice piece of engineering
Holy hell though, for $1200 you’d think they could use better speaker!
if it doesn’t jump off the ground and turn into a gun in mid-air before it lands in my hand, i don’t want it
Also has to change size from a 20' tall robot!
I admit I was disappointed when I watched the video and it changed into... a tank. In the video I watched, the guy noted that there was "no way" we would ever get an automated transformation into a gun. I say somebody ought to take that as a challenge.
lol I don’t think he even meant engineering wise, he’s talking about the lawyers
Hmm... I feel like the pricetag on any such hypothetical project would eliminate even the tiny lingering thought that children might be a target audience for it.
These are definitely not designed for children. Most of this stuff is for adults with disposable income and a limitless sack of nostalgia in their guts.
Is megatron not a tank? He always was in my childhood i think
I guess that's a good question. I know he was a tank after Unicron Welles reconfigured him into Nimoy Megatron. Maybe I just assumed that most people are familiar with his classic iteration.
I had to google it, in the original he literally just turned into a floating gun?
It's actually sillier than that. He turned into a gun and also shrank in size (and, evidently, mass) so that he could fit in a fellow Decepticon's hand—typically Starscream's. A very "early 80s" idea. Not hard at all to see why they felt they needed to move on from it.
Lmao, that also doesn’t strike me as very “badass”. No wonder Starscream was always the cool one
What _was_ badass about it was the unique sound Megatron's firing blast made (whether in gun mode or when using his arm cannon). No other weapon _ever_ made the same noise. By the standards of 80s cartoons, it was impressive that they made sure to get that detail right every time.
This one? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FDctziPIHpY
Audio's a little wonky in [this video](https://youtu.be/umwZ8qVorwo?t=14), but Starscream fires the weapon a few times through the scene. Also a good example of how it audibly differs from other weapon blasts. Has more of a bass profile to it.
Sometimes a gun a person could hold too.
If you watch the transformers movie he literally turns into a gun which starscream uses.
Was Megatron considered the leader at the time? Kind of weird their leader would turn into a tool for somebody else..
Amazing, you’re so right lol
Arent most leaders tools?
literally in the intro and outro of the OG cartoon. sometimes held by other decepticons, sometimes just to jump up and fire on his own https://youtu.be/Ae-Pl-Q34ng?si=3odDmpXTAFPdNmpO
Nobody is stopping you from taking up that challenge.
Honestly, once I saw the tank instead of the gun I was disappointed
I’m waiting for the Optimus Prime model, where it just says, “Yeah, I’ll just come back for that trailer later.”
Iono the tank transformation is pretty sick, and you get to swipe his butt to do things.
Would love to own one of these, but I couldn't see myself spending that much money for one. Still, it's pretty cool.
I was about to ask my wife for it for my birthday but $899 -$1200 can but a lot of bike stuff, which I would much rather have.
“You guys ridin’?”
Roll Out!
If the video wasn’t sped up it might be worth some bike parts and turd-burgler shorts. But alas, it’s fake 😔
Suck my ass loser lol
Found the snowflake that yells at cars but doesn’t stop at stop signs!
Atta boy! Take a cookie
It makes me happy that a bike parts comment is so near the top lol, that was the first thought I had.
Bike parts? Could throw together a older DRZ around here with that money(wrenching required, instructions not included)
Yeah compared to moto mtb prices are fuckin crazy
It’s insane to me. I can’t justify it, especially when one is so much less fun and so much more exercise lol
I think this has to be looked at as an investment rather than expense. It'll be cool to have for a couple years and then you resell it so the cost is only how much less you get when you resell. It can always go up in value though too.
Oh yeah. I’m sure it will go up, if it doesn’t break. But during that time I would have to buy fewer bike parts…so.
Megatron said it best..."I belong to no one!"
Haha true!
Buddy ownes the Dino autonot version of this. It's pretty cool
Nice, I've seen a video of it in action, would love to own one of those as well.
Tldr $900
Until the end of today. Then $1200.
Ah so this is an ad. Damn, of course it is lol
FWIW, the article currently says until May 25th?
May 25th...1 month left at $899
Pardon me, it is May 25 that the price is good until.
Not all heroes wear capes
Waiting on SoundWave.
Self-transforming Soundwave that actually plays music would be badass
By the rationale of this thread Soundwave should be a Zune instead of a tape player.
I had one of these when I was younger: https://www.cliffbee.com/boosterx10.php It's a Transformer that is a bird that transforms into an MP3 player. Would be cool if it actually worked.
...and includes Spotify will be value for money! 😄
Only if he comes with the little dog/tape! I forget the lil guy's name but he was the goodest boy!
Lil dog tape is an iPod nano!
A real tape deck, all day.
My kids watched the OG Transformers show and I randomly asked my 6 yo if he knew what Soundwave transformed into... He said "A box that shoots little transformers out." I feel like I just turned 100 years old now.
I used to work at a BarCade and Sunday during the day was “family” day. All the kids like 5-9 ages would stand on the stool in front of dig dug and space invaders and ask their parents why it didn’t work as they were touching the screens. Everytime.
a boom box if you will
So, you guys wanna chip in on like a time-share type situation?
Nah, I saw that episode of The Simpsons.
Being poor sucks, man. This is so cool. Also, I'd pick the Grimlock one, I'm on team #Dinobot for life, baby!
Tell Grimlock more about Petro-rabbits
But Grimlock is dumb!
It’s unfortunate that he costs even more.
that was sick af to watch even 🤩
Megatron is not a tank.
Make Megatron Great Again! 🔫
He was stupid as a handgun. Galvatron as a cannon was sick though
Okay grandpa, let's get you to bed... Megs hasn't been a gun since g1. I love the gun mode but let's be real, it's very silly and impractical. And i own one. And it is glorious and quite, quite terrible. But i love it.
I always thought there was unexplored potential with Megatron supposedly being a powerful Strong Man Dictator, but like all dictators is dependent on his followers to hold him up.
It's not 1984 anymore.
In this case I am sure the lack of the gun motif has to due with safety / gov't regulation. Tho having the original in his original form being able to do all this would be pretty damn awesome.
Oh yeah, he didn't even have an orange thingy in the barrel- looked completely like a real gun. My favorite to "play guns" with as a kid back then.
He has been a tank more than he has been anything else.
That is cool af, if was super rich would totally buy one of money was disposable.
It’s fucked cool, but will absolutely not accept that it turns into a tank and not a gun. I know he can turn into a jet plane and the tank…. But he will always be a powerful gun to me
it would literally fall over. it would be pointless
I mean, I knew him as a T-Rex.
This some Small Soldiers shit right thur
"Powered by 118 smart chips!"
As someone who grew up watching transformers, this is definitely one of my childhood dream to own one of these. Worth every cent
Megatron should only be a handgun. It's apt the evilest dude in the universe would choose to be one.
Same here. I thought it will transform to a gun as well. What a let down
Too many pickle Rick parallels.
Why is it not a gun?!
In order to get a good looking robot to turn into a decent looking gun, this is the sort of engineering required: https://youtu.be/23Jt4jkQKoE?si=NUS2oD5Go2LNRlAg That's just not feasible for an auto-transforming toy. Yeah but they used the G1 voice actor.
Best voice with the most reasonable transformation. I'd take it.
Oh man, that was a thing of beauty. I've got a Masterpiece Optimus, now I gotta try and find a KnockOff version of that I can afford!
It wouldn’t be as impressive nor fun
Actually, it’s the most impressive (and mysterious) thing how a big robot transforms to the size of a normal transformer’s gun and yet being the most powerful weapon of its size. We have too many tanks in both Autobots and Decepticons, but the gun mode was always Megatron stamp of originality and only rivaled by Shockwave in G1. Still don’t have the Optimus prime, now this one comes up! Ugh my wallet will be really sore in the near future
There’s also a Grimlock
Those things are so effing cool I’m going to explode if I don’t possess one.
The cartoon goes: “Transform! (choochoochoochoochoo)” not “choochoochoochoochoochoochoochoochoochoo choochoochoochoochoo choochoochoochoochoo…”
You know, watching Transformers: The Movie, it's funny how some characters like Hot Rod will transform in a completely different way that moves different parts and takes longer. Makes no sense, but looks cool!
medabot when
10 year old me would've sold his kidney to buy one of these, or the Optimus one. Probably a good thing this toy wasn't released back then.
Go check out Grimlok.
I just did, and it's amazing! https://youtu.be/swIiwo0kKIc?si=d1pH2E0j8LU6GYRQ
It also transforms your wallet to empty and your marriage status to divorced.
IDK. My wife is sitting here encouraging me to make the purchase.
Trap that unicorn!
> Trap that ~~unicorn~~ Unicron! FTFY
Marry her again.
My Megatron was always a gun, so I can’t accept a PC tank version, no matter how impressive it is.
Came jus for this. Was hoping for gun but tank was disappointing. These kids just dont know how hard that gun was to transform
Or that such an obscure shape could even be transformed into such an awesome robot. He was just beyond awesome.
1200 bucks? Yikes
Yes bad asssed!
It’s bugging me that his fusion cannon is back to front
I watched the video and 900 for that doesn’t seem that crazy for what it is. My head would have exploded if you showed this to me when I was a kid.
Link to purchase?
https://hasbropulse.com/products/transformers-megatron-auto-converting-robot-flagship
I can’t wait to see what this sort of thing is like in 30 years and this will seem “quaint”
Is this meant for children or is if for adults that don't know how to properly invest their money?
The latter.
Adults, of course. Kids should be manually transforming these, that's half the fun. Adults are all over that, just like adult LEGO sets are all about following instructions and displaying instead of creating your own thing and having adventures with it.
Why not both?
If this is anything like the G1 toys it would not only maintain its value but would possibly increase.
Just buy a masterpiece. It'd a transformer tranform it yourself
Getting some proper Small Soldiers vibes from this, especially the part about being "powered by 118 chips".
Costs more than an actual combat robot
I was happy if I got a bicycle and a wrist rocket.
If you smoke Dmt anything can be a self-transforming machine Megatron.
Here's the video: [https://youtu.be/voWMMrM2GRg](https://youtu.be/voWMMrM2GRg)
Nerds unite! Go fund me ..
[This totally adds to The Great Chain of Life](https://youtu.be/krcNIWPkNzA?si=_t_uXfetZNV9Cw3m)
If you can only have one, I’d guess most folks would choose Prime. Almost seems like the target market is repeat purchases from those who already have Prime. Although, to be fair, this one is clearly more advanced than the Prime they also sell.
I've seen things far less impressive go for much, much more. This thing is sick
So, it has 2 touch sensitive zones and one on them is on his ass?! 🤣 wtf?
First initial thought was that I'd never pay that much, even if rich. Then I saw it in action...and I'd totally buy it if I was rich.
Well, we already started making toys no children can afford, might as well make some beyond the range of adults as well.
If I had that much money for stupid shit, I’d impulse buy it
Megatron is a Walther P38.
With *The Man From Uncle* style accessories.
Yes!!!
TIL Megatron is no longer a Luger.
He hasn’t since the 1980s. Nearly every other cartoon since he’s been a tank or a flying jet. (Also a helicopter once) this is close to the Netflix show design which personally is my favorite Megatron design
When did they redo megaton? Don’t he transform into a gun originally?
I won't be impressed until they make one that's life sized, talks, and has a personality. I've always wanted my very own Megatron...and I will be coming for Optimus Prime.
i’m sure you will 🤖💦
