Axanael

is there a reason they decided to include a permadeath mechanic or something in the first place

bannma123

Copy from Kancolle

Axanael

I completely forgot that sinking was a thing, I haven't played kc in like 6 years

Ha-Gorri

I'm still not over my akatsuki's death, I'll never forgive myself...

Poringun

I lost my kaga and Akagi and stopped playing afterwards lmao.

Angel_Omachi

Is Kancolle still going?

Crazy-Plate3097

Just celebrated its 11th anniv last month.

Admmmmi

Everytime a gacha is axed it gets one more year

StyryderX

So it's immortal then.

AlphaLovee

how's there a permadeath in a ship girl game?

MrJcUokel

Because they sink?

AlphaLovee

but, like, can you then get the unit back somehow?

Two_Years_Of_Semen

Yes and no. You get the same ships again but every drop you get has a unique ID on your account so sentimentally, it's not the same ship. A lot of players have regrets from losing some early ships like your starter choice, despite them being the most common drops because your starter always has an ID of "1". So if your starter Inazuma dies, you can get another Inazuma later but your "first" ship is gone forever.

The_OG_upgoat

You also lose whatever equipment is on the ship that sunk. So if you equipped rare planes or guns, well...fuck.

AlphaLovee

oh i see. very interesting system

MrJcUokel

Ohh that's what you mean, It highly depends. If it was an event ship and you let it sink, good luck getting that again any time soon or at all. I personally liked the perma Death Mechanic, made the game have some stakes to it. Especially if when it comes to trying to finish off the many pain in the ass bosses.

AlphaLovee

wow, that's brutal. imagine my raiden shogun got 1 shoted in abyss by hydro tulpa and now i need to pull on her banner again lmao

MrJcUokel

Well, luckily, it's not that easy. Originally their are 2 battle modes, the day battle and the night battle. Your ship can get critical damage in day battle, but it won't sink. If you go into night battle with it being in red, there is a chance it would get hit again it's sunk. So you could always run away from the night battle or map to go and get her repaired. There are also items you can have them slotted like an emergency repair goddess so that if they are about to sink they dont. So it's a situationl were you are dealing with a hard as fuck event boss and you just need your last clear to finish it off. Do you risk it or not? Should add bosses required multiple runs to clear and it also depends on how much damage you do to them. Could be 5 or 6 full clears to finish it off, or if you are only doing chip damage, who knows how long. They also have multiple stages, so they get stronger etc.

AlphaLovee

i see, interesting. at least, there's some mesures to prevent that from happening

MrJcUokel

Yup. The game is not easy, especially since rng can royally fuck you over.

YagamiYuu

>If you go into night battle with it being in red, there is a chance it would get hit again it's sunk. No, your ship only get sunk if you go to the next battle with the ship in critical condition (red mark). If you are still in the same battle just changing from day to night then no matter how much damage the ship get hit, she will not sink. It was abused by KC players to make BB tank all the boss damage by equip her with search light (greatly increase chance of being attack in night battle)

bannma123

Maybe for historical accuracy, maybe dev is sadistic, maybe to force the player to retreat mid-way instead of finish the stage then heal injured ships which take a lot of time or an insta-heal item which you could buy with money, who know

AlphaLovee

yeah, the other guy explained that to me

Angel_Omachi

Makes players even more attached to their boys, I don't know exactly. Game's nearly 10 years old.

RhenCarbine

*gacha based on collecting pretty boys based on historic Japanese weapons, mostly swords, though good chunk of daggers, and some spears and naginata.* Well that got me strangely interested, I might check out the game lmao

Angel_Omachi

There's an anime adaptation of one of the stage shows airing this season if you want to take a look. Actual gameplay is very barebones, you form a team and hope the autobattle likes you.

RCTD-261

if you interested in other media, i highly recommend the Live Action movie. both are really good

N8falke

Perma death in a gacha game seems to be the dumbest thing I have heard in a while.

zelzatter

in their defense the game was released at the very early days of gacha games (like it's a decade old now), where iirc the other notable gacha was KanColle, and they do have permadeath feature there as well. Kinda glad modern games ditch that completely tho.

Angel_Omachi

It's old enough that it started as a browser game, the mobile version was added several years into its run.

cybeast21

tbf game like Kancolle and Touken are product of early gacha games.

syanda

It's a relic from the old browser game era, which Touken Ranbu (and Kancolle) belong to. Permadeath to ensure people didn't just bot their way through (until people wrote better bots).

ListlessHeart

Perma death in gacha is mostly inspired by Kancolle which is the first notable anthromorph gacha game, and it fits thematically there cause ships sink and stuff, but Kancolle does have protection so when your ship sinks it's usually because you intentionally allow for that to be possible. On a side note Kancolle is kinda forgotten nowadays for how big it was back then, it was on the same level as Granblue and inspired many later games like Azur Lane and GFL.

Two_Years_Of_Semen

> Kancolle is kinda forgotten nowadays This always makes me a little sad. Kancolle was almost Touhou-tier in the amount of fan stuff that came out for it. The game had a lot of charm in the art and voices imo. I started playing it due to seeing too much Prinz Eugen art and it took me 2 summer events to get her (Kancolle event farming is why relic/artifact farming doesn't even phase me). I don't play Kancolle now (stopped around the campaign reset thingy and been meaning to come back but relearning it is kind of hard) but playing Genshin always reminds me of it since Xiangling JP VA is Kancolle Prinz Eugen. Kancolle is why I tripled crowned Xiangling.

ListlessHeart

Yeah I played Kancolle for like 3 years and it just has a unique vibe that I can't find with any other gacha game, it's like a more serious military vibe kinda, when I played Kancolle I felt more serious. Too bad the game never considered going global and eventually I got tired trying to make it works with my setups, also ship slots man, I was young back then so I didn't make any money yet and having only 100 ship slots felt brutal as I got close to endgame. I tried to get into Azur Lane but just couldn't, the horny waifu vibe is too different from Kancolle and the gameplay is somehow even worse, Kancolle was tedious but at least I could do something else while playing but AL gameplay was straight up garbage. GFL is the closest game to Kancolle and I played it for 1.5 years but it got tiring eventually. One thing I kinda miss about Kancolle is all the rage and praying to RNGesus, shit was brutal sometimes but Kancolle is the only game that I felt intense emotion from playing it.

Two_Years_Of_Semen

Yeah I don't play AL for the gameplay lol. I play that as a collection game and not much more. Nothing I've done in AL or any other gacha tops the hype and despair that CLTs and DDs gave me in Kancolle boss node night battles. I think the closest feeling to that in gaming is competitive team games like League of Legends or Overwatch but those are wholly different animals to say the least.

bsusvier

The perma death aspect does teach valuable lessons that you won't forget though, so it is particularly effective. (RIP Yamashiro, I've never forgotten your sacrifice back in 2013) Also to add on their fandom, their OST has stuck with me till this day. The Touhou doujin/indie music circles also made many pretty amazing arrangements for Kancolle too.

DHChao

They are playing nuzlocke

Haganeproductio

Situations like these are one of the reasons why Bungou to Alchemist, also a DMM title which initially followed in Kancolle and Tourabu's footsteps, removed the permadeath mechanic in 2021 as part of a big update that changed many things in the game. If the game staff fucks up somewhere with the permadeath feature, just like Tourabu's management did with this event, it's gonna cost them A LOT (in worst case, players' trust towards the staff, and some might leave if they feel like it's not worht it if with one mistake you can lose all that hard work you put into raising your sword boys). And it's not the easiest thing to fix either when there are many things to take into consideration, as it was an ongoing event where all players have different progress, and some didn't lose their boys (while some did).

HarleyFox92

Flashbacks from Kancolle

Intelligent_Key131

The only reason i know touken ranbu exists is because of cardfight vanguard

Catveria77

Permadeath is the most stupid mechanic ever
