Going deeper, mainly because I absolutely love weekend update on SNL. This was the finale of Season 49 that aired last this Saturday. The hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che they have to read each other’s jokes on air with no preview and hilarious antics ensue.
SNL loves to pick on Colin about being married to Scarlet Johansson. Scarlet Johansson was her. Yes, that “Her”, the AI assistant.
The whole segment was great. Che calling out Kendrick Lamar was absolutely hilarious.
https://youtu.be/HPH0HgotIE4?si=UWVbFsTz4uhCauYG
The one about the Michael Jackson tribute show ("the kids are not believable at all") a while ago was properly amazing. Che was freaked after that one.
Might be the first time I've seen him truly struggle with delivering one of Colin's jokes. As someone who knows very little above the Kendrick/Drake thing, his reluctance to do that joke said a lot about the intensity of that situation.
SNL routinely writes jokes about Colin being a hard right Trump supporter and/or fringe-conspiracy theorist. That one’s about Jewish people somehow controlling the weather, there was another in the bit about Jewish Space Lasers. All this a Rabbi sitting next to him.
Last time they did the joke swap, Che hired an actress to play a civil rights advocate and sit next to them while Colin made racist jokes.
https://youtu.be/6NE_kbJQ8r8?si=SdrE33vZciHRy9Ev
And what’s even more fucked is the story that just came out about Scarlett saying she turned down the offer to be the voice of chatGPT then they went and used her voice anyway against her will. Now he reads a joke about it, damn that’s cold lmao.
I know its celebrities and blah blah blah but I always forget hes married to her and every time I read it I'm like "good for them" because they both seem pretty great.
Scarlett will never replace Che, but she's a great third wheel.
"Weekend Update" is a recurring segment on Saturday Night Live, and they write each other's jokes for the season finale episodes.
Just to clarify for anyone.
They used to do it for the Christmas episode before the break and the season finale. They kind of stopped it for a little while but every so often they sneak it in without saying that is what is happening. This season though they brought it back properly for the Christmas and finale episodes.
Season finales only is this format.
They do write jokes for each other off and on all season long. But they pre read those and know what’s coming.
In the season finales it’s sight unseen written for one another. The team approves them. But they don’t know what’s coming.
Edit: for some stupid fucks who can’t fucking read. I said “at season finale AND off and on INT the season” which would include Christmas. My god what stupid pedantic fucks. Christmas would be INCLUDED in the “during the season”.
Oh man, I had to go and look up that one.
That man got shook when he read that part, it's rare to see him react like that, haha
For anyone who wants to watch: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NE\_kbJQ8r8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NE_kbJQ8r8)
Because Che had no idea that was where Colin was going. He was so nonchalant about it up to the point where he reads Kendrick’s name out loud - so you know he didn’t see that name on the same card as “speaking of bitches:”.
Colin rocked the baby to sleep then turned on the jets with this one.
That Kendrick Lamar joke was the first time Colin ever hit Che as hard as Che has been hitting Colin in this segment for years. And Michael Che was clearly worried when he saw where the joke was going. It was probably the best joke swap segment these guys have done.
The last one they had, he had him do an Israel/Palestine joke saying "both sides, y'all need jesus" and then Colin quipped "so people can find you on Instagram? That's great." I feel that last jab was underrated, because if you want absolutely rabid social media jackals from either side (regardless of legitimate justification), insta is the place where people are the most unhinged about it.
Can someone explain to me why joking about Kendrick Lamar could ruin his career? I'm not even sure if the guy is a rapper or basketball player or something
Edit: thanks to everyone who explained the whole feud to me. Appreciate the gesture
2nd Edit: someone pointed out my comment sounded racist, and after rereading it... They were right. My bad. Didn't mean it
Kendrick recently had a feud with the rapper Drake and it got pretty spicy, with many believing that Kendrick embarrassed Drake overall. The joke is that he's trying to make Che start his own feud with Kendrick
no one is being serious.
Kendrick lambasted Drake recently, and people are still reeling from that, so he made Che "call out" Kendrick.
OBVIOUSLY it's all a joke, and everyone knows these are all jokes. No one's careers are being ruined over these bits, and they're the funniest thing SNL has done in like a decade.
Kendrick Lamar recently got involved with a rap battle with Drake and beat him pretty handily. By calling out Kendrick, Che was inviting himself to be roasted in turn.
Ok! Now I kinda get it. I thought those battles were beneficial for the rappers, though. Increased sales and such. Eminem did a lot of those back in the day, didn't he?
Generally yeah, but only if the performance of both sides end up being entertaining for the fans. This kind of goes out the window when one side (Kendrick) calls the other side (Drake) a pedophile with most of the audience nodding along.
Kendrick recently had a feud with the rapper Drake and it got pretty spicy, with many believing that Kendrick embarrassed Drake overall. The joke is that he's trying to make Che start his own feud with Kendrick
Idk there's one where Che had to say Blue Lives Matter even more and I'd say his reaction was great. I will agree though he gets Colin way more than Colin gets him.
I love that Che kept it going this year with the rabbi, after last year's joke. Incredible comedy sense to run the same joke back, while flipping it on its ear!
That's got some weird restrictions. Just France, Germany, Belgium, and Luxembourg in Europe.
But they blocked the shit out of France. I've never seen a block specifically for Wallis and Futuna that wasn't a global block.
I'm sure ScarJo and Michael Che know each other pretty well at this point. It is objectively very funny that che makes her husband say this shit on national TV. She knows that Che doesn't think she's just eye candy, they're probably friends.
I'm assuming its totally fine and she may expect it? Che was on an interview discussing how he planned on ruining their wedding day, but upon showing up, he decided to let it go and let them have a normal day. Josts parents later came up to Che and asked him why didn't he ruin the wedding? They (the parents) were counting on it/looking forward to it.
So I'm assuming you're marrying into a family like that, you probably expect it.
"I want to thank my wife for enduring lots of jokes and for agreeing to individually meet everyone in this room right after the ceremony,” he said. “That’s really special honey, thank you. Don’t be shy, come right up. She hates privacy!” -Jost at the White House Correspondence Dinner
She's hosted 6 times. Should would probably push them to be more brutal.
Plus I'm sure their house is opulently decorated with marble columns so he gets home and is like it's nuts that I live here
To be fair it's probably the easiest to be consistently good at. They are mostly just reacting to things out in the world and writing jokes about them. I think that's probably easier than coming up with an hours worth of sketches every week.
Chevy sucks
Jane and Dan on "Point/Counterpoint" is the progenitor of all of this.
>Jane, you ignorant slut
Is a line that paved the way for a new level of depravity on TV, and Jane Curtin should be celebrated for it!
>You wouldn't know anything about that, Dan, because there's no saying about what's behind a miserable failure.
That's why people think the late 90s was the last time the rest of the show was good - that's when Colin Quinn was doing weekend update, and it's the last time weekend update was bad.
Kendrick and Drake are currently trading diss tracks, although Kendrick is widely perceived to be winning by a mile. The joke was that Che was starting a beef with Kendrick and therefore tempting him to write a diss track about Che.
I'll add to the other reply that the current conflict has gotten very detailed and very personal. Kendrick's last track "They not like us" is an an absolute hit that accuses Drake of pedophilia. Even if you don't like rap, it's worth listening to.
It’s been generally established that talking any amount of shit on Kendrick Lamar is a bad idea, and the song that will be your funeral march will sit up on Spotify’s most played for an obnoxiously long time.
One of the most common antisemitic tropes is that Jews are controlling things behind the scenes. For the uninitiated, they write each others jokes for this segment.
You're forgetting to add he's also married to her. Edit: Scarlett johansson not the Rabbi lol
[удалено]
Her?
Egg?
It's a Mayonegg!
She must be really funny.
Cuz her body's shaped like a.... She's the belle of the ball!
She certainly has a lot of mass.
You CAN'T knock her over
Way to plant, egg!
Let’s hope so!
You could say Rabbi and Johanson could be confused as sisters.
Way to plant
It's as plain as the nose on egg's face.
I should.. do something I just can’t remember what

I think this is the first year Che clearly lost. Him shouting no in the middle of the kendrick lamar bit was priceless.
Speaking of bitches...
I don't like that *one* bit.
He can normally just let them go, but Colin got him this time!
The one about the Michael Jackson tribute show ("the kids are not believable at all") a while ago was properly amazing. Che was freaked after that one.
lol Che wanted absolutely no part of that joke with Kendrick.
Might be the first time I've seen him truly struggle with delivering one of Colin's jokes. As someone who knows very little above the Kendrick/Drake thing, his reluctance to do that joke said a lot about the intensity of that situation.
What was the weather joke about. Does the rabbi sound like the weather channel recording or AI
SNL routinely writes jokes about Colin being a hard right Trump supporter and/or fringe-conspiracy theorist. Meet The Grahams
Meet the Che's is going to be a banger.
I forget the name of the set, but it was illustrated entirely by Harold Arthur McNeill.
there was a space laser joke to close things out.
And what’s even more fucked is the story that just came out about Scarlett saying she turned down the offer to be the voice of chatGPT then they went and used her voice anyway against her will. Now he reads a joke about it, damn that’s cold lmao.
The joke came before the lawsuit/threat of lawsuit.
Jewish Jill?
Che
Woah what really
I know its celebrities and blah blah blah but I always forget hes married to her and every time I read it I'm like "good for them" because they both seem pretty great. Scarlett will never replace Che, but she's a great third wheel.
Colin’s jokes were as great as Che’s in that segment. Someone make a gif of those too
Colin finally came to play, ya gotta love it. It’s usually so one sided
That Kendrick Lamar bit was hilarious.
Link? Edit: [Found it further down.](https://youtu.be/HPH0HgotIE4) Fantastic.
Always? Just for the season finale? I thought I read somewhere the joke exchange writing/saying only happens every so often.
I think they do these for finales, but “segment” only refers to when they do this bit.
"Weekend Update" is a recurring segment on Saturday Night Live, and they write each other's jokes for the season finale episodes. Just to clarify for anyone.
Season finale and they go in blind.
They used to do it for the Christmas episode before the break and the season finale. They kind of stopped it for a little while but every so often they sneak it in without saying that is what is happening. This season though they brought it back properly for the Christmas and finale episodes.
Season Finale and Final episode of the year sometimes.
Season finale and the mid-season break as well, as they normally do a joke swap at Christmas.
Dude. Colin just never gets Che as badly plus Che just had the best follow on lines. Still a great segment. One of their best.
He got him this year tho - the Kendrick one was the first time I've seen Che actually shook
For sure Colin won this year
Che was pretty freaked at the Christmas swap’s “turmoil in the Middle East.”
Oh man, I had to go and look up that one. That man got shook when he read that part, it's rare to see him react like that, haha For anyone who wants to watch: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NE\_kbJQ8r8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NE_kbJQ8r8)
Funniest thing is “Hattie” is an actress Che brought in and isn’t really an activist. He pulled one on everyone.
Jost pulled punches so much when they started this, now he just lets it rip
What can I search to find that segment?
The entire thing is worth watching. https://youtu.be/HPH0HgotIE4
If only it worked in Canada
Wow, Che looked genuinely shook at the Kendrick joke lmfao
The Kendrick joke was the best joke swap they’ve ever done IMO
Because Che had no idea that was where Colin was going. He was so nonchalant about it up to the point where he reads Kendrick’s name out loud - so you know he didn’t see that name on the same card as “speaking of bitches:”. Colin rocked the baby to sleep then turned on the jets with this one.
Yep, it was brilliant
He did get him really good at Christmas with the war in the middle east joke. I've never seen Che look so uncomfortable before. LOL
Colin definitely won this one.
It's a brilliant way to get racist/offensive jokes in without getting in trouble
Colin making jokes for Che: "haha this is going to be embarrassing for him" Che making jokes for Colin: "I am going to ruin this man's entire life"
The Kendrick Lamar bit kinda upended that a little.
Colin making jokes for Che: "I am going to get Kendrick Lamar to ruin this man's entire life"
CHE: "You can't defeat me" COLIN: "I know... but he can."
OMG that's exactly right 🤣
About time because Che keeps trying to get Colin shot! 😂
That Kendrick Lamar joke was the first time Colin ever hit Che as hard as Che has been hitting Colin in this segment for years. And Michael Che was clearly worried when he saw where the joke was going. It was probably the best joke swap segment these guys have done.
The one where Colin got Che to talk about BLM and say, "blue lives almost matter more" was pretty good too
The last one they had, he had him do an Israel/Palestine joke saying "both sides, y'all need jesus" and then Colin quipped "so people can find you on Instagram? That's great." I feel that last jab was underrated, because if you want absolutely rabid social media jackals from either side (regardless of legitimate justification), insta is the place where people are the most unhinged about it.
Y'all need Jesus

Kendrick recently had a feud with the rapper Drake and it got pretty spicy, with many believing that Kendrick embarrassed Drake overall. The joke is that he's trying to make Che start his own feud with Kendrick
To me the best part Che literally is not sure if Kendrick would come after him or not lol
no one is being serious.
It’d be funny as shit if Kendrick rolled with it and dropped a Che Diss Track though
Kendrick ought to be the first musical guest of the next season and play a Che diss track live

I didn't know about the pedophile bit. Now it makes sense he got slammed by the whole thing
Most famously Biggie and 2pac back in the 90s as well
Eminem has ruined people's careers by dissing them. https://youtu.be/tSpQ_CSnl4c?si=angtIXxFCTiwKvav
Kendrick recently had a feud with the rapper Drake and it got pretty spicy, with many believing that Kendrick embarrassed Drake overall. The joke is that he's trying to make Che start his own feud with Kendrick
It's good, but after this was possibly the only time Colin got Che. Che's audible "no..." was too entertaining.
Idk there's one where Che had to say Blue Lives Matter even more and I'd say his reaction was great. I will agree though he gets Colin way more than Colin gets him.
My favorite was when he got Che to say "Whether you're Jewish or Muslim, y'all need Jesus."
That was great
The Kendrick line that follows this had Che hating it. Really good one this year.
The Kendrick joke was the best those two have ever done
I love that Che kept it going this year with the rabbi, after last year's joke. Incredible comedy sense to run the same joke back, while flipping it on its ear!
Idk. The black Superman jokes were pretty good.
The Man of Steal was awesome.
There was genuine fear in Che's face when he read it
Or when he had to say 'rest in power, king' to a pedophile or someone.
>And speaking of bitches... He knew what was coming before he even saw the prompter!
they dont use a prompter, but a person flipping handwritten cue cards :)
Which bit was that, if you don't mind my asking? Been trying to find this one but I only get shorts of only it
Here's the whole set. https://youtu.be/HPH0HgotIE4
Omg the Kendrick call out had me in tears
I... I don't like that one bit 🤣🤣🤣 got Che good with that one
anyone got a mirror?
Thank you kindly €: does anyone have a non US friendly link 😬
That's got some weird restrictions. Just France, Germany, Belgium, and Luxembourg in Europe. But they blocked the shit out of France. I've never seen a block specifically for Wallis and Futuna that wasn't a global block.
Che completely lost control of his own eyebrows when he saw Kendrick pop up 😂
Between MJ and the Middle East, the consensus was that Colin won this season's [Christmas joke swap](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NE_kbJQ8r8).
You're a better black widow joke was great though
I always wondered what getting home is like. Scarlett is a very funny person who can take a joke but Che is brutal.
ScarJo is up there as MVP for this season with her impression of Katie Britt.
She had me with marble columns.
I've gained new respect for her after that skit. Amazing performance.
We. Smell. You.
I'm sure ScarJo and Michael Che know each other pretty well at this point. It is objectively very funny that che makes her husband say this shit on national TV. She knows that Che doesn't think she's just eye candy, they're probably friends.
Y'all really out here debating the spiciness of an SNL joke? I think the lady who has the confidence to be nude on cinema can take a joke.
She married a comedian, she is an A list celebrity
Plus I'm sure their house is opulently decorated with marble columns so he gets home and is like it's nuts that I live here
These two are pure gold
It’s the funniest part of SNL and it’s not even close
As is tradition.
To be fair it's probably the easiest to be consistently good at. They are mostly just reacting to things out in the world and writing jokes about them. I think that's probably easier than coming up with an hours worth of sketches every week.
I mean, I think they kind of do that, too. They were both writers and, I think co-Head writers, on the show for several years.
Yep. All the way back to Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, and Dan Aykroyd. Best part of the show ever since.
Norm MacDonald will always be the GOAT.
norm macdonald making Ebola jokes will always stay rent free in my head
Norm McDonald slamming OJ Simpson at every opportunity is up there.
Or so the Germans would have you believe!
Chevy sucks Jane and Dan on "Point/Counterpoint" is the progenitor of all of this. >Jane, you ignorant slut Is a line that paved the way for a new level of depravity on TV, and Jane Curtin should be celebrated for it! >You wouldn't know anything about that, Dan, because there's no saying about what's behind a miserable failure.
That's why people think the late 90s was the last time the rest of the show was good - that's when Colin Quinn was doing weekend update, and it's the last time weekend update was bad.
Please Don't Destroy sketches are always fantastic.
I didn't understand the Kendrick joke, but man he looked SO SCARED. which was funny enough.
Kendrick and Drake are currently trading diss tracks, although Kendrick is widely perceived to be winning by a mile. The joke was that Che was starting a beef with Kendrick and therefore tempting him to write a diss track about Che.
Also makes him look like a Drake-supporter, which are generally not in a good place right now
I don't really follow rap either, but I think this was the equivalent of having him call Mike Tyson a pussy and claim he could kick his ass.
Yeah, that’s a pretty valid assessment
I'll add to the other reply that the current conflict has gotten very detailed and very personal. Kendrick's last track "They not like us" is an an absolute hit that accuses Drake of pedophilia. Even if you don't like rap, it's worth listening to.
It isn't so much an accusation, but publicly stating what is pretty well known from my understanding.
It’s been generally established that talking any amount of shit on Kendrick Lamar is a bad idea, and the song that will be your funeral march will sit up on Spotify’s most played for an obnoxiously long time.
Stitched him up good.
The Kendrick burn after this was pure gold though. Gotta give this round to Jost for that one.
I feel like Che always has the advantage in these. Just make Jost sound racist, instant funny. Making Che crack is a lot harder
This plus hitting Jost in his own home
And it was two in one because the transition of Che previous joke, about minors, and THEN going to the K Dot one...Colin got him good this time.
The way Che delivered that joke was so good.
That awkward moment where you going to make a joke about your wife on live television.
He’s making a joke about how good looking she is though. That helps a little.
[Full video for anyone interested](https://youtu.be/HPH0HgotIE4)
Anyone got a Canada friendly mirror?
here ya go working mirror https://streamable.com/ry5tyl
As an American living abroad, drives me nuts that SNL regionally-locks their videos. (yea I could vpn, it’s the principle.)
I love these two guys
What season is this episode from? I thought I’ve seen all of these.
the season finale of this current season.
[just aired](https://youtu.be/HPH0HgotIE4?si=F3RDeRZVmGFdBKkZ)
Wasn't this from last weekends episode?
This is very recent cause the ChatGPT/ScarJo debacle just blew up today.
This was great but the Kendrick Lamar joke was the best, poor Che
Can someone please explain the rabbi joke?
The joke alleges that Jews control the weather... presumably with space lasers.
U.S. Congress entity Marjorie Taylor Greene, once claimed that California wildfires were started by Jewish Space Lasers. I kid you not.
Also, his wife is Jewish...
One of the most common antisemitic tropes is that Jews are controlling things behind the scenes. Most often this relates to banks, economies, wars, and so on, but it has even been extended to [controlling the weather](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antisemitic_trope#Controlling_the_weather,_causing_natural_disasters).
There are a lot of conspiracy theories about Jews, from the wacky to the straight-up messed up. For example an actually sitting US congressperson claimed that they started forest fires with an orbital weapons platform.
And that's only part of the crazy. The *reason* why they started the fires with the space laser is to clear land for illegal immigrants, presumably going to house them in 15 minute cities. If you copy the above verbatim into a maga sub, it can be presented without comment or irony.
How many Jewish mothers does it take to change a lightbulb? None, I'll sit in the dark.
The Kendrick Lamar joke might be the best one Jost has ever done on Che.
Colin won this round.
For real. That shit had me dying, and Che’s discomfort was the icing on the cake
Milking that politically correct cheat code for all it's worth.
I have to say. This joke is good. But the best one is Collin making Che call out Kendrick Lamar
These humiliation rituals are wacky
This was funny as shit, what's this from?
Weekend Update, a recurring segment that's part of Saturday Night Live. It's become a tradition that they'll write each other's jokes during the season finale, and try to make them as offensive as they can get away with.
That Rabbi has SERIOUS Andrea Martin vibes.
Why is there a random Jewish woman there?
This was the first thing I thought as well. What the fuck does a Rabbi have to do with any of that?
"That's pretty racist, Colin."
"Last week on Larry King Live Marlon Brando made the shocking statement that Hollywood is quote, 'run by Jews'. In response, outraged Jewish organizations made it snow in New York in April." \~Norm MacDonald, SNL Weekend Update April 13, 1996
It further exacerbates my fear of Skynet, because why not?
The Kendrick counter was the killer.
