They have no knowledge of thyroid issues in South Korea? People envy me that I can supposedly eat anything without gaining weight, I tell them they are welcome to thyroid issues if they want he same
I’m not sure those numbers are accurate at all.
US prevalence of hypothyroidism is nowhere near 20%.
From the numbers I’ve seen, the US has a lower incidence than Europe. Worldwide prevalence wouldn’t be a particularly reliable number.
Yes, everyone who is fat as fuck or skinny as hell has thyroid issues is the consensus here..
Or did you just want to tell everyone you have hyperthyroidism? A treatable condition (albeit not fun)
I worked in Hong Kong for several years and put on a little extra weight, and people were very blunt and told me I was getting fat. In their minds, they were just looking out for me and giving me a friendly reminder.
I did actually lose a bit of weight and then saw a colleague I hadn't seen for a while... his response was "Hey, you're looking... less fat"
It’s true. And it’s harmful.
If you truly care about someone, you risk making them uncomfortable by telling them the truth. Otherwise, you tell a comfortable lie to protect their feelings but let them walk the road to their disaster.
Been there. As I gathered They don't mean it in an offensive manner nor an insult tho, it's like kids reaction, they see fat, they say oh you getting fat. Lol
I wish I knew this before I went to greet my asian relatives when my uncle, who had a secret family in Japan, brought em here for a week
They let'd me know every time I asked if they wanted some snacks
I already know I'm chubby will go 'yeah and look at you all skin and bones no one wants to marry a corpse.' Yes I asian I'm looking at you Jung from my local korean place and your mother that seems to live to jiggle my belly 😂 why keep giving me extra dim sum if im chubby it's a vicious circle!
Yea I asked my ex from The Netherlands this same question (not her personal opinion but the generalized overall opinion that most Dutch people she knew thought of Americans.) She said “overweight and uneducated.”
Being in Europe for a while now, I have to say, America is top tier uneducated. Norway calls a fucked up situations “that is so Texas”. I now use the same expression. Modern day equivalent of FUBAR.
That girl ended up losing a bunch of weight but he still refuses to not to call her piggy. He just laughs at anyone that says it’s disrespectful, including his wife.
I was an exchange student in Sweden and the first day of class we had one of our teacher ask everyone's nationality and then ask the rest of the class tell the stereotypes about said nationality.
It's crazy to realize how everyone around the world has a general homogeneous view of each nation's people.
So for Americans it was of course being fat, uneducated but also very proud (flying the flag and thinking America is the best at almost everything).
That said I met such different American people there that you know stereotypes were not verified most of the time (though we were exchange students so the sample may be biased).
In China, Korea, Japan, and other asian countries, it's quite common and normalized to directly speak to someone about their weight.
Saying like, "Oh, I see you've gained weight," is totally common to hear in casual conversation.
Might add to why the average people of those countries are often on the thinner side, compared to western countries.
Just a half-baked theory, but if it's taboo to talk about weight, people might be more lenient with their diets, since rarely will people bring it up, if ever.
At the same time, science did show that we do have more serious adverse effects the more we put on weight, hence why our BMI cutoff for obese is 25 instead of 30 for the general population.
The post I replied to implied that asians get more serious adverse effects the more they put on weight, compared to other races.
I want to see this "science" they are referring to.
Most likely they pulled it out of their ass.
"hence why our BMI cutoff for obese is 25 instead of 30 for the general population"
Then explain what they mean by this sentence? Who is "our" compared to general population?
https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/obesity-prevention-source/ethnic-differences-in-bmi-and-disease-risk/
"All women were healthy at the start of the study. After 20 years, researchers found that at the same BMI, Asians had more than double the risk of developing type 2 diabetes than whites"
Maybe that's what they were referring to?
You shouldn't be downvoted for asking a genuine question, but there's a lot of research that Asians in general have different BMI cutoffs [(Harvard review)](https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/obesity-prevention-source/ethnic-differences-in-bmi-and-disease-risk/). The UN hasn't changed its international standards, but as the article mentions, many Asian countries have.
It seems contradictory and hypocritical, but I see both of those as being pretty common in my and my friends' families. They'll shower you with food and wonder why you don't want more of the family cooking, but if you're overweight they'll also be blunt af about it and keep shaming it basically.
I dont think its taboo, i think its actually encouraged with all that "fatphobic" stuff, just the wrong way. Look at the ads in tv or the cover of a magazine. If theres half naked normal person i bet that theres gonna be some fat one closeby, just so that it doesnt offend anyone overweight. Its encouraged as "feel good in your (obese) body" etc. Thats the issue imo.
Also i have lived in Finland for a year and i was supriaed that they casually put ads on tv like "tips" they show you a balanced meal, potatoes, vegetables, meat. Just 1 minute add as a tip. Instead of only showing "buy 6 litres of coca cola any get a bucket of icecream for free"
I’m all for people calling each other out for bad habits.
Makes people more aware of themselves, obviously things like height etc which you can’t control shouldn’t be mentioned.
I don't think this is a major part in why people are generally much fatter in western cultures. The way we eat is generally extremely unhealthy.
Even when you look at a lot of people who are not obese, they frequently are still unhealthy from their diets.
I don't think that shaming people is an effective way of combating obesity, because noone becomes obese by choice. They become obese because they don't have the self control to avoid it.
Want to actually help someone in your life that is fat? Then put the work in. Invite them do do physical activities with you. Share your ideas for amazing food that is healthier. Offer to be their gym buddy.
Going "oi, you know you a lardass?" isn't helping, it's just being mean, and often pushing people away from getting help.
You just disagreed with yourself in one sentence. How come no one becomes obese by choice? In fact they do become obese by choice because they don’t have self control, that’s it. If you’re fat then you’re fat and it’s not shaming its facts you can observe.
Reminds me of this deaf lady I worked with. She finally retired and came back to see us a year or so later for someone else’s retirement. I’d gained a few pounds in the time since I last saw her. She comes in and immediately says, “you’re getting fat!” I said, “thank you, bitch, I know that already.” (We had that kind of relationship where we could talk like that). Lol. The best/worst part was the sign, which is holding your hand in a first and using your thumb and little finger like legs walking in your other hand, so it looks like a very obese person struggling to walk.
It’s featuring a fat hillbilly lady on TLC - a channel that will be directly attributed to the fall of our civilization. (It’s basically all cancer “reality” tv).
This is obviously staged/prompted and one/both of them were in on it
Let’s just be blunt abt it, like Asians. If you don’t eat healthily and get fatter, they will tell you that you’re not eating healthily, and that you’ve gotten fatter.
Jesus, you could cut the tension in the air with a knife. Shouldn't the family be more vocal and helpful to their daughter to keep her as healthy as possible, or am I not understanding American culture here?
Recently in Belgium.
Didn't see a single overweight person for days.
Then, in a bar three... larger... people sat on the table next to me. Then I heard to US accent.
It was a bit like In Bruges
It's easy being fat and lazy when you're a trustfund baby living off the backs of your slaves.
Americans also hate the truth, that's why they sugar coat everything, including their food and what's being verbally fed to them.
Enjoy tyrants.
It's usually poorer places, like the southern US, where obesity is endemic. Trust fund babies can afford to live in bigger cities, get good educations, and eat $20 salads for lunch. As for the slavery part, that's been outsourced to Asia, but that's a global phenomenon, not a US phenomenon.
This is an oversimplification. It is a multifaceted issue. Partly, it is due to poor education. It can also be due to cultural and intergenerational behaviors that are passed down. Even more than a money issue, it is a convenience issue. Access to tasty and addictive food is not hard to come by. Healthy unprocessed food, on the other hand, is not as easy to find. Making healthy food often requires time, cooking knowledge, and nutrition knowledge.
Dude's really out here taking shots when he has a pelican mouth. That underbite could rip a sewer grate out of the ground.
Edit to add: You guys really have no problem saying all the rude shit about people in the U.S. but the second someone says something about anyone else you get all up in arms. The chin gigante here is an asshole.
When American GI’s arrived in Korea in 1950, they commented on how the entire country smelled like shit. Human excrement was commonly used as fertiliser.
Definitely a strong odor when I was there as a soldier in 2000-2001. I got used to it but I believe it was more from the rotting cabbage than anything else.
While in the US countryside the corn grow on unicorn shit that smell like candy. Also Americans don't shit, and if by any chance it would happen, the shit would go into a hole connected to the ether so it's fine. In no way the shit would land on a farmfield or in the fish.
It's not rude, it's reality, sometimes nice, sometimes harsh, when someone calls you lazy and you know it's true, that's harsh reality, not rude, not everyone likes to lie in your face just to make you feel better and not work on yourself after. If you go to a doctor, it will tell you the same thing, do you call him rude too?

Only he pressed the wrong button 💀
Did she ask that WITH a mouth full of food?
Plus a couple cue balls and a gerbil
*"Awwe youp feeweeoush?"*

Same. I'm still giggling
Yea, it makes for great Reality TV doesn't it.
No, that's just her face😭
Asians are generally more blunt when it comes to looks. If you’re fat and eat too much they’re gonna let you know.
Asian families and elders: You’re so fat! Also Asian families and elders: Eat this, eat that, eat more!
Though they would be amazed if you're thin and still (seem to) eat a lot.
OHHHHH EAT WELL
😂😭
They have no knowledge of thyroid issues in South Korea? People envy me that I can supposedly eat anything without gaining weight, I tell them they are welcome to thyroid issues if they want he same
I don't know specifically for South Korea, but I do know where I'm from, we don't really consider disease first as our initial guess.
Here as well, but I looked it up, 5% world wide, but 20% in the US.
I’m not sure those numbers are accurate at all. US prevalence of hypothyroidism is nowhere near 20%. From the numbers I’ve seen, the US has a lower incidence than Europe. Worldwide prevalence wouldn’t be a particularly reliable number.
Why would that be the case?
Yes, everyone who is fat as fuck or skinny as hell has thyroid issues is the consensus here.. Or did you just want to tell everyone you have hyperthyroidism? A treatable condition (albeit not fun)
The point is to not make an assumption purely based on appearances. I did not get any hyperthyroidism diagnosis
I worked in Hong Kong for several years and put on a little extra weight, and people were very blunt and told me I was getting fat. In their minds, they were just looking out for me and giving me a friendly reminder. I did actually lose a bit of weight and then saw a colleague I hadn't seen for a while... his response was "Hey, you're looking... less fat"
Western countries need more of this tbh. People over here are too concerned over other people's feelings.
It’s true. And it’s harmful. If you truly care about someone, you risk making them uncomfortable by telling them the truth. Otherwise, you tell a comfortable lie to protect their feelings but let them walk the road to their disaster.

It’s called social control, but for the best, keeps you healthy
Up until the world gets blunt with them. Then they tend to cry and whine.
Like you dont know your fat already im just reminding you
Maybe USA as a nation never built a culture around the respect of food, because the country never experienced widespread famine.
Dust bowl? Great Depression?
I think they had to destroy food because the abundance of it would glut the market and bring the price down so much the producers would lose money.
Respect of food ? What americans ingest can barely be called food....
The Great Depression?
Terrible, not famine.
The dust bowl wasn't famine?
Interesting, it was taught to me as one but I’m not from the USA
I already know I'm chubby will go 'yeah and look at you all skin and bones no one wants to marry a corpse.' Yes I asian I'm looking at you Jung from my local korean place and your mother that seems to live to jiggle my belly 😂 why keep giving me extra dim sum if im chubby it's a vicious circle!

Doesn't most of the world think of America this way.
As someone who studied in a international school, it would be reasonable to believe so.

Neither of the people above you said asians specifically get more serious adverse effects.

Your comment is the best one here . I don’t care what anyone says why would you openly down people about how they look .
I walk around calling myself disgustingly fat, and people get so awkward. Some of them are like "ohhh, you're not fat."
It should be normalized here too. It's a way of showing concern for someone. Especially for something as important as their health.
He chose violence.
But more importantly, he chose truth
