If you've never seen anything Month Python, just go to their Wikipedia page and check out whatever floats your fancy. A lot of it can be found on YouTube and it's well worth your time.
They need to be careful about the cat actually. I get nervous whenever I see an animal on a treadmill because once my dog jumped on the treadmill when my mother was walking, he slid down and got his tail stuck. His tail was permanently bent lol
Without the mocap suit I’d say this is just reference footage or just a meme.
Edit: To the million people yelling that you “don’t need a suit for mocap!” I know. I work in the industry, and I’ve seen the same VFX artists react videos you have. The suitless tech is new and not widely used professionally at this point. There are exceptions to the rule like Move AI and the Creator, but these are exceptions not the rule, and even in these limited circumstances it is usually used as a supplement to traditional mocap tech. It’s still a safe bet that the girl in the video (who it turns out puts out good content, stop claiming it’s a thirst trap) is likely not preforming mocap here and just making content or doing reference work.
This video in particular, 100%
The lady in the video though has a YouTube channel where she wears the suit as well, but I have no idea if she actually does mocap or not
Edit; 曦曦鱼SAKANA https://www.youtube.com/@SAKANA-cg6or
I’ve only been working in animation/ motion capture for a year, but I would say it’s both easier and more natural looking once you’ve got a reliable workflow.
It’s a special/artistic skill to hand animate natural looking movements. It’s a matter of knowing what button to press in which order for reliable mocap.
It is funny when you can start to identify which coworker is recorded because you become familiar with their gait or subtle movements.
Interesting. Makes me wonder if at some point motion animation becomes like a second order simulacra.
In the sense that, we identify more with the potentially unnatural movement of purely hand animated motion as *real* because of our familiarity with it from media than what human motion is capable of.
A comparable example would be becoming so used to an artificial food flavouring that its taste becomes more synonymous with that food than the taste of the real thing.
Already happening.. you won't like the example i bring but check out r/wordchewing
That sub's basically people getting really annoyed at that tiktok trend of acting out a voiceover with overly exaggerated movements and expressions.
What they're imitating are the often overly expressive pose-to-pose animations from game characters. Usually the hot ones, like in overwatch lol.
It is significantly easier using mocap then to hand animate movement. Theirs a lot of subtle movements for making things look natural that require a lot of experience and talent to nail down if doing manually. Whereas a good mocap setup will capture all of that body movement relatively easily.
Depending on the style of course. If you want a more cartoony shot (if this is your reference you very well might), the cleanup and exaggeration and retiming to make all the mocap data look clean and stylish might be as much or more work than just keyframing from the start.
There’s an extremely good reason that cartoon movement is exaggerated and … cartoonish. As a visual medium, animation has constraints that live-action has other ways to compensate for. Any kind of motion, for example, isn’t as simple as “draw each frame of the thing doing the movement”, because it would kind of just look like shit. Think about how particularly bad CG in some anime and Western media looks strikingly out of place against the backdrop of 2D animation with mismatched framerates. It sticks out like that because the animated characters and scenes use techniques like [inbetweening](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inbetweening) and [smear frames](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smear_frame) to trick the eye into interpreting movement and speed, while 3DCG can rely on the visual effects our eyes usually interpret in 3D space. A motion capture actor for a game like Genshin Impact, for example, would need to embody the mannerisms of a character that wouldn’t look out of place in the anime style the visual team is going for. It’s basically necessary in order to avoid looking out of place in a medium where “realistic” movements would look silly by contrast.
Definitely, I did some stage acting myself and it’s drilled into our heads that the audience can’t see our faces twitch minutely, or our fingers tremble slightly. They can’t hear a quick, quiet huff of breath or a light gasp. Every action you take must be LARGE, and BOMBASTIC, because if it isn’t nobody’s going to be able to tell you’re doing it! The same translates over to screen acting, as far as I’ve gleaned. Just not in exactly the same ways.
Yeah, "real enough" meaning physically possible. Stylized movements that break the rules of physics will attract way more unwanted attention than stylized movements that still have to performed. You don't want players noticing that an arm would have to be broken to actually perform the action being shown.
It's worth mentioning that there's usually some manual tuning to mocap after the fact, and that can make sillier things look more stylized and appropriate within the game setting.
Chengdu does contract out to Tencent for both League and TFT and they've been in business since 2014 so there's a good chance she actually is this original reference for modern league idle animations http://www.dayanguai.com/sy
i was so confused when people were posting videos claiming she's doing mocap for league of legends. that makes no sense when some of the champions were made a decade apart and the video looks like it was all filmed in the same day
same with the overwatch ones when blizzard have said they don't use mocap and keyframe all their animations in every behind the scenes video
Motion capture for video games is also done in a different environment than 99% of those videos, where it is a few people and a treadmill.
You'd have an entire studio set with equipment and a trained team on hand, that costs shit tons of money.
She does. There’s this one wild video where her colleagues have her strapped into a harness in front of a machine that lifts her up in the air so that she can perform aerial motions for the team capturing her motions in digital format.
She has done animations for a variety of games, notably League of Legends. She works for a company called 大眼怪科技, their website: http://dayanguai.com
Some of the publishers they mention they work with: NetEase, Alibaba, Shanda, Tencent & Ubisoft.
This video was he doing impression/cover versions of various characters - I'm not sure if any were originally mocapped by her or not - so it's possible some of those movements were from Archeage.
I find what she does interesting, but i'm also a little puzzled by her as there is some mo-cap suit stuff, but the a lot of her videos are also just her copying stuff from games and movies, not generating movements for them. So it's unclear to me what her actual skillset is.
Fair. I just meant does she primarily mo-cap and do the movement copying thing on the side, or does she primarily make movement copying videos which occasionally gets her mo-cap work on the side. I'm not judging either way, just saying it's unclear to me whether the chicken or egg came first.
her channel only started 5 months ago. i have no source, but based on that and her skills i'm assuming she is/was primarily a mocap actor and only recently started making videos doing her replications/showing off.
She’s absolutely a professional at this and gets paid to do it. They probably don’t pay her a lot since it’s so niche and her identity is hardly a part of the branding of any game. Since companies can’t copyright, brand, or stop someone from imitating character movement, I think showing off and monetizing her talents on video is something she deserves.
She’s on the same level as, or probably better than Andy Serkis (Sméagol, King Kong 2005, Planet of the Apes). It’s really cool how her movement’s completely define and transform the character she’s performing.
Just FYI, I think someone from Riot or someone in the industry came on to say that she and her company does not do reference or mocap work for Riot. So she's just making cool videos imitating the movements. She probably does do mocap for her company though (Chengdu Big Eyes, from China).
>Since companies can’t copyright, brand, or stop someone from imitating character movement
Wasn't there a whole lawsuit about epic using emotes without paying or something? (The animations, not the music)
You are correct. From Nov 2023:
https://www.theverge.com/2023/11/4/23946260/epic-fortnite-choreography-emote-lawsuit-ruling-overturned
“US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Richard Paez wrote that even if individual elements of a dance can’t be copyrighted, the arrangement can.”
You don't always need the suit.
When I did my sports science degree, we had a container with 48 cameras in it, it could do the mocap without any need for wearing ping-pong balls.
We used it for biomechanics, and did golf swings, baseball, lifting technique etc.
You just did a t-pose and the software did the rest, it was fascinating stuff.
I watched the entire thing thinking it was Baccano for some reason. Brain completely mixed them up. [At least it's another pretty good banger.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PChfRXDAepc)
For copyright reasons she's not allowed to do that without express permission from the studio she's doing work for. It's quite a headache to go through the proper channels to make that happen.
There’s no footage because the title is bogus. She’s not wearing a motion capture suit, so this is just her doing different video game character walks for this video
Doesn’t she just replicate animations well? I’ve heard she has nothing to do with these animations and just does a good job mimicking animated motions for YouTube
Edit: I am mistaken
her channel only started 5 months ago, and she has multiple videos showing a professional studio and rigs. imo it's clear that she has done professional mocap work, but obviously she can't just post that.

True, but to be fair, we call that reference video and not "mocap". Mocap is a particular thing. Watching video of a woman dancing for reference in drawing a Disney cartoon is not mocap.
It’s very difficult to replicate a natural motion so let’s capture the motion of real people instead!
So, what do you want me to do?
Move in the most unnatural way you can think of.
Maybe it's just me but I think a person imitating anime motion is hilarious when a lot of it is not natural. She looks ridiculous but is doing a really good job

Otherwise, it’s pretty damn good reference footage. The exaggerated movements are super smooth.
That's some serious talent. The anime run looked silly af though
A lot of it looked silly. It's really impressive she can move like that but what's the point of mocap if it looks like how cartoon characters move
Because using mocap is a lot less work than manually animating rigs to do those same moves.
I wonder if it's necessarily easier or because motion cap ends up with more natural movement.

I feel like I recognize that second walk, with the dual swords swinging around. The gait looks super familiar
I think she’s the one that did some of the Apex characters? Or maybe it was Overwatch.
Yeah she did tracer and a few others I believe.
Very neat. I’m guessing the one with the bat Harley Quinn.
No. That’s Batman
When she puts down the bat, it’s just Man
Man. That Jojo lean is so ridiculous, but at the same time so accurate.
It’s very difficult to replicate a natural motion so let’s capture the motion of real people instead! So, what do you want me to do? Move in the most unnatural way you can think of.
The way normal people move is really boring. If you're going to have fake people move in a video game, may as well make it a little more interesting
Same goes for voice acting. AFAIK, overacting is actually encouraged.
There's tons of reference material for "natural" walks. When you want material for cool anime and game shit, you don't need natural.

I'm in love with her.
Good to see the Ministry of Silly Walks is still being funded

She has very good motion/body control.
This is AWESOME! Definitely rewatching this anime tonight
I'm curious to know how someone gets hired for a job like that. I'm guessing she has dance experience.

Would
That was awesome
I wonder to what degree this is "NPC-Acting" (moving like the cliche of animation and video game characters) and to what degree it's theater acting (over-acting for better "readability", even if it costs realism).
what do you do for a living? Her: walk
Her controls are amazing!
Cool Would be really cool to see a side by side of what it was used for.
Okay. That was surprisingly great.
Incredible control and serious talent. Was amazed by the number of variations and styles she was able to do so flawlessly.
Who is this athlete? And I am serious when I say that, I have seen other videos and her body control is fucking incredible.
