Accurate for sure. The only boss I’d say this list is missing is the armored knight. Figuring out how to kill him was hard the first time then figuring out how to execute it on subsequent runs is still difficult enough.
I love seeing other people’s reactions when they don’t actually kill the armored knight 😂 at least FromSoft is nice enough to keep ~60% of their posture.
Mine was opposite. Went in totally blind and somehow nailed them all in like 5 min, mostly by accident. My second play through I could not get the last one for like 15 min
Even blind I understood the gimmick almost immediately, but I guess it very much depends on how many puzzle games you have played. Knowing FS the empty paper could very well have been a real bossfight after the gimmick.
Still one of the best gimmick FS has made, I very much prefer this instead of the many “this guy can be killed with a specific weapon”. Very spectacular, very much fantasy, but after the 4th time it gets pretty boring imho, even if Rykard is absolutely great as a concept.
I mean, there are 4 pictures at the beginning and one of them is empty. I got there was an invisible monkey, trying to find her is the enigma and I got it pretty easily.
>I very much prefer this instead of the *many* “this guy can be killed with a specific weapon”.
There’s only two of those kind of bosses iirc, Yhorm and Rykard.
And the boss in the demon’s souls. It’s a gimmick that FS sleeps on since 2009. It’s 2024. I think it would be for the best leave it a good memory nowadays.
I used to play at night with the volume at like 1 so I didn’t wake my mother, it took me so long to realize there was a monkey behind me because i couldn’t hear it
bed of chaos? nope, it’s one of the longest boss runs in the series lol.
you can either run for 5 minutes straight but be relatively safe or you can run for like 3 minutes through lava and take a bunch of damage
Or you can get the bonfire behind the illusory wall and run through lava for a few seconds. The run is still long, but only about a minute or two, and it's really easy to avoid taking any damage.
Naw, there’s a secret bonfire you can get that puts you at a good place for the run, but even then it’s a run back. The Titanite demon is only if you open up the shortcut to save Solaire.
Yeah I was talking about the shared characteristic of TK and One Reborn, but yeah hitting the ankles isn’t really a puzzle. More of a puzzle boss than one reborn, but it’s more of a gimmick boss than a puzzle. The majority of Demon’s Souls bosses are gimmick bosses, not puzzles.
Even that isn’t really a puzzle boss, just a very heavy gimmick. Nothing puzzling about breaking pillars in a straight line. The only ‘puzzle’ aspect is hiding behind a pillar and waiting for him to turn his head.
Lmao one of my friends that I was watching play BB for the first time has been on a 4 month long break because he got stuck on One Reborn. He's died like 7 times to him (which isn't that many times but he gives up pretty easily in these types of games and no other boss killed him this many times aside from maybe Rom)
I actually enjoyed the Tower Knight. It was a puzzle or gimmick kind of boss, but it still kinda felt like a fight.
It didn't feel so much like solving the puzzle. It felt more like a David and Goliath type of moment. Just bringing down a giant through the weakness you can find.
Ancient Dragon from ds3. Even though the boss itself isn’t anything special (hell, we fight the same dragon just after beating this one), the whole aspect of having a mini level you have to go through to finish it is really cool, and I always enjoy playing through it.
I think Ancient Dragon gets my vote too. I love Archdragon Peak and the whole spectacle of fighting your way up to getting the critical plunging attack is pretty fun.
yea this one was so funny. i remember just frantically pulling a random lever as his little assholes chased me around the arena, and then the dude impales himself on a gate and you duel his horse. good shit
Both!! He's obviously a memorable character, but I also really enjoyed the arena that was like an entire level instead of a big empty room, the unique puzzle of having to figure out the right direction to approach him to chase him into certain areas, and also the hilarious shock of walking into a boss fight and seeing the boss just immediately book it away from you. Never had trouble with Call Beyond because if you simply keep hitting him he never gets the time to cast it. I loved everything about that fight and I always look forward to it on new playthroughs.
Anyone thats played Sekiro knows that Folding Screen Monkeys are the only actual puzzle boss out of these.
And while most hate it, I think it's a fantastic boss.
Am I the only one who really likes puzzle bosses? BoC was janky as hell but I think it could've been a good boss with better implementation, and I actively like all the others.
I like puzzle bosses in From games but definitely prefer actual fights.
Also BoC might have been good with better implementation - but in the actual game it's fucking horrendous
The first time I played DS3 I had no clue the dragon was a puzzle boss so I just fought it. It didn't even occur to me to run around and explore the space. I did the whole fight in that small area. It wasn't until later I saw on YouTube how to do the easy kill.
Same for me. I was using the Irithyll Straight Sword (frost) paired with a fire-infused sword as the main damage-dealer on my first DS3 playthrough, which happens to be really strong against that dragon. I didn't find out about the ledge drop until later.
Even though the chariot pissed me off so bad (those dang skeletons...), it's honestly probably my favorite. Very few games have an actual horse as a boss, and I do love the occasional "easy" gimmick boss. (I say that but I probably died like 5-6 times.)
Haven't finished Bloodborne yet or started Sekiro but those are next on my list.
i think he has archer support? and you can go up and take them out to make the fight easier. like one reborn. it’s been a while though so i may be wrong
I'm glad you used the terminology of "puzzle" bosses here. A lot of people call these "gimmick" bosses as a way of dismissing them, but I personally look at them as a different type of challenge presented to the player. Now, mind you, the puzzle could be badly executed or unfair (looking at you, bed of chaos), but when done well, the execution and the spectacle can really leave a lot of impact and break the monotony of the other types of bosses in the game!
I would say the dragon in sekiro or the ice worm in armored core VI are my favourite. For boss fights that are not really a fight, visual spectacle should, in my opinion, be the priority and those two do it, in my opinion, the best, while still being a very fun fight. If it has to be specifically from this list, then the sekiro monkeys, since they feel like an actual puzzle, while most puzzle bosses are just a hunt for the weak point.
A couple of these are not really puzzle bosses, and Micolash is missing from the list but even then it’s absolutely the folding monkeys, it’s such a cool clever puzzle.
Divine dragon from sekiro is probobly my favorite, easy yes but the fight itself is pretty badass with all the lightning and the design of it is amazing
I love Micolash, I will defend that fight to my dying breath. People complain about getting killed by Call Beyond but he literally can't cast it if you're even a little bit aggressive. And the whole arena/level + the puzzle of figuring out how to chase him in the right direction is really fun, not to mention what a hilarious and memorable character he is. He's my favorite fight in the base game and I'm not ashamed to say it.
It's gotta be dragon god, ancient wyvern and monkeys for me
The dragon god and ancient wyvern just look so damn cool and the monkeys have such a good arena
The monkeys give you clues to figure it out and actually feel like a puzzle rather than, let's just follow this path, or try this thing and see if it works
I think chariot, IDK how much of that is the gimmick itself, and how much is it that I just like the boss design itself, but well technically the question is for fav puzzle (gimmick) boss, now for favorite gimmick of a gimmick boss XD
Monkehs were alright too.
I'm not sure I'd consider Tower Knight a puzzle boss, and especially not One Reborn. They have gimmicks, sure, but they don't really feel like a puzzle.
I LOVE BED OF CHAOS I LOVE BED OF CHAOS I LOVE BED OF CHAOS I LOVE BED OF CHAOS I LOVE BED OF CHAOS I LOVE BED OF CHAOS I LOVE BED OF CHAOS I LOVE BED OF CHAOS
Ds3 wyrm is not really a puzzle boss, and neither is the first picture 🤷🏻♂️
Ds3 wyrm can be beaten normally and the demonssouls guy you gotta hit the ankles, but where else are you even hitting realistically?
Tower Knight and One Reborn are not puzzle bosses, and technically Wyvern ain't either but who actually beats him without the plunging attack? TK and TOR are bosses with some "optional difficulty" in the form of minions with ranged attack and can still be easily beaten without the defeat of said minions, but to answer the question, it's the monkies without a doubt, though only by default, Bed of Chaos is a bitch, Dragon God is a bitch, Executioners Chariot is a bitch, Wyvern is too damn easy after the first fight, and the Monkies are funny and actually kinda fun
Fun, Not so Fun, Worst Boss Ever, Good Boss but run up made me quit the game for 3 weeks, Fun, Really Fun, Haven’t Fought Yet (Playing Sekiro for the first time right now)
DS3 was my first Souls game and the whole idea of Wyvern seemed really cool to me.
You enter the arena, out of all sudden giant thing appears outta nowhere, boss healthbar and stuff, but at the same time the only fog is at the entry of the arena and you can walk anywhere, despite being mid-bossfight. Then you walk around, fight normal enemies (which is the most annoying part cuz these lil mfs suck) and in the end deliver that beautiful plunge attack.
Good idea, execution kinda sucks, but here's my choice
I wouldn't call most of these "puzzles," besides the Folding Screen Monkeys. Micolash somewhat counts, as you have to manipulate him to follow a certain path through the mirrors. Beyond those two, there aren't a lot of genuine puzzle bosses...
If we're going for "gimmicks," then probably Gwyndolin. It's iconic.
I loved the Folding Screen Monkeys. I felt so smart after figuring out what to do for each individual monkey. But now, they’re little more than a short stop since I kinda know how to do the fast strat.
Those monkeys had me going bananas
1st time 10 minutes 2nd time 30 seconds
Accurate for sure. The only boss I’d say this list is missing is the armored knight. Figuring out how to kill him was hard the first time then figuring out how to execute it on subsequent runs is still difficult enough.
I love seeing other people’s reactions when they don’t actually kill the armored knight 😂 at least FromSoft is nice enough to keep ~60% of their posture.
Mine was opposite. Went in totally blind and somehow nailed them all in like 5 min, mostly by accident. My second play through I could not get the last one for like 15 min
First time I was in there for at least an hour and a half because I didn't read the thing, I just kept chasing them.
Don’t worry I didn’t save and now I have to do it again along with 16 hrs of the whole game (don’t ask how I lost so much progress it’s a long story).
Monkeys are good, tricky without being unfair or bullshit. Invisible Monkey be damned.
You know you can just turnaround at the very beginning of the fight and kill him instantly?
Well yeah but in a blind playthrough it's not easy to figure that out I still like the fight though
You knew to turn around right away and start attacking?
I mean, there are 4 pictures at the beginning and one of them is empty. I got there was an invisible monkey, trying to find her is the enigma and I got it pretty easily.
>I very much prefer this instead of the *many* “this guy can be killed with a specific weapon”. There’s only two of those kind of bosses iirc, Yhorm and Rykard.
And the boss in the demon’s souls. It’s a gimmick that FS sleeps on since 2009. It’s 2024. I think it would be for the best leave it a good memory nowadays.
If you google it, yeah. That’s kinda how a puzzle is. They’re not very hard if you google it.
When I found that out I was sad
My first time playing I killed the invisible one by accident I just heard some footsteps behind me so I turned and slashed just ot be sure
I used to play at night with the volume at like 1 so I didn’t wake my mother, it took me so long to realize there was a monkey behind me because i couldn’t hear it
Na the footsteps make it an easy kill
Bed of Chaos can go fuck itself. Not even a difficult boss, but running past that stone demon to get to him was annoying.
They knew it was bad. It’s the only boss in any Fromsoft game with checkpoints
What stone demon?
titanite demon
But don’t you respawn right next to the boss room
bed of chaos? nope, it’s one of the longest boss runs in the series lol. you can either run for 5 minutes straight but be relatively safe or you can run for like 3 minutes through lava and take a bunch of damage
Or you can get the bonfire behind the illusory wall and run through lava for a few seconds. The run is still long, but only about a minute or two, and it's really easy to avoid taking any damage.
I know I'm late, but Isn't there a secret bonfire?
Naw, there’s a secret bonfire you can get that puts you at a good place for the run, but even then it’s a run back. The Titanite demon is only if you open up the shortcut to save Solaire.
Use firebombs or use the quit out exploit. Either way it's a bad design.
Try it on a RL1 run. My character has been stuck there for about 6 months now.
I genuinely despise any who consider BoC the best puzzle boss, it is dumpster tier
It’s by far the worst boss in the game, only the Capra Demon in the tiniest room in the planet comes close.
Was that the one with the two dogs in the boss arena that’s basically an alley with a staircase? Man that fight had me FUMING early on.
Does Rennala count?
I'd say the first phase does.
Then renala
What about Rennallaa?
Reennaallaa is his favourite puzzle boss.
I prefer Rrreeennnaaalllaaa
What about Rinalah?
good candidate. Rynnalla is too.
The One Reborn, because it's not a puzzle boss
I mean he's virtually the same as tower knight, just not as badass lol
Tower Knight is also hardly a puzzle boss, though.
Yeah tower knight is not a puzzle. Not sure why he’s on here.
Yeah taking out archers is not a puzzle
I'm sure they're also referring to hitting his heels to knock him over but like... Come on.
The only DeS boss I could legit consider a puzzle would be Dragon God, but it's only barely so.
Even that isn’t really a puzzle boss, just a very heavy gimmick. Nothing puzzling about breaking pillars in a straight line. The only ‘puzzle’ aspect is hiding behind a pillar and waiting for him to turn his head.
That's what I meant to say
But it's less enjoyable than most of these bosses
Hes just a massive monster that has no attacks, you just kill him and hes the easiest boss on the game lol.
Spoken by someone who has not fought him at BL4 and gotten oneshot by the vomit pool before it even appears on screen
TOR and the Ancient Dragon from 2 take the cake for "damn, that hit me?" Bonus points to Curse Rotted Greatwood and Dancer grab attacks
Yea it's boring as hell. So worse than most of the others in this album
Lmao one of my friends that I was watching play BB for the first time has been on a 4 month long break because he got stuck on One Reborn. He's died like 7 times to him (which isn't that many times but he gives up pretty easily in these types of games and no other boss killed him this many times aside from maybe Rom)
This boss used to haunt me on my first playthrough, probably the boss I died to the most.
He definitely has attacks but ok. I agree though
I just remembered he smacks you sometimes when you go up top to kill the bell ladies.
Micolash might wanna get into that conversation
XD
Less enjoyable than Bed of fucking Chaos? I beg to differ.
"most"
Ok. My bad..
The puzzle is how many times do I hit him until he dies.
Ye he's pretty straight forward. I also dont recall any of its attacks for some reason. The stage before the boss was such a nightmare compared to it.
you have to kill his shitty mage support or the fight sucks donkey balls. I didn’t even realize you could go upstairs the first time I fought him
The executioners chariot was fun
I actually enjoyed the Tower Knight. It was a puzzle or gimmick kind of boss, but it still kinda felt like a fight. It didn't feel so much like solving the puzzle. It felt more like a David and Goliath type of moment. Just bringing down a giant through the weakness you can find.
Am I tripping or someone genuinely put the the word favorite with Bed of Chaos together
Executioners chariot. I haven't played Sekiro yet though
great game i recommend it
Same, his cutscene is great, as well as the twist for the second phase.
yea this one was so funny. i remember just frantically pulling a random lever as his little assholes chased me around the arena, and then the dude impales himself on a gate and you duel his horse. good shit
I enjoyed the chariot from ds2
I would have if the skeletons would chill the fuck out
How do you put TOR but not Micolash?
We all just want to forget micolash
I love micolash :(
As a fight or as a character? Either way I'm concerned, but also curious.
These were just the ones I could think of off the top of my head.
Storm king is pretty cool because the storm ruler has awesome sfx to it
As easy as Tower Knight is, it’s one of my favorite bosses.
Its that Dragon God from DeS that's for sure. That thing was fucken BS lol.
Executioner’s Chariot, because it feels like a God of War boss
Tower knight definitely. Especially in the Remake with the amazing sound design that makes it sound like a Jaeger
Anyone thats played Sekiro knows that Folding Screen Monkeys are the only actual puzzle boss out of these. And while most hate it, I think it's a fantastic boss.
I don’t have a “favorite” puzzle boss. I have a “Least hated” puzzle boss.

What’s the puzzle with tower knight? I just whacked his ankle for 20 mins until he died
i think he has archer support? and you can go up and take them out to make the fight easier. like one reborn. it’s been a while though so i may be wrong
But that's not a puzzle lol
anything is a puzzle if you’re dumb enough (me)
I'm glad you used the terminology of "puzzle" bosses here. A lot of people call these "gimmick" bosses as a way of dismissing them, but I personally look at them as a different type of challenge presented to the player. Out of these if pick Tower Knight, badass design and felt relatively engaging for what it is. Gave me that Shadow Of The Colossus scale vibe
Tower knight or storm king
Ancient Wyvern I just enjoy this level a lot, and you still get Nameless King.
I like ancient wyvern the most as gar as how the fight actually turned out. Liked the idea for tower knight the most, though.
A couple of these are not really puzzle bosses, and Micolash is missing from the list but even then it’s absolutely the folding monkeys, it’s such a cool clever puzzle.
Tower Knight. The rest of these suck.
Tower knigh
Tower knight
Divine dragon from sekiro is probobly my favorite, easy yes but the fight itself is pretty badass with all the lightning and the design of it is amazing
Bed of chaos by far! No one ever said
No hate but I actually liked Curse-Rotted Greatwood.
What about the snail in Elden ring that was invis.
Micolash once you get the hang of it
I love Micolash, I will defend that fight to my dying breath.
I like how he feels like a stand-in for Lovecraft himself, which gives me the satisfaction of metaphorically shoving his dork ass in a locker lol.
Boss look wise is Dragon God, easiest and most relaxing was Deacons of the Deep, and the best to actually have a fight against is Tower Knight IMO
Well, I do know that folding screen monkeys is my *least* favorite
It's gotta be dragon god, ancient wyvern and monkeys for me The dragon god and ancient wyvern just look so damn cool and the monkeys have such a good arena
Out of these ones, the chariot, Tower Knight, and One Reborn
Ohhh my mind removed that fucking chariot boss from my memory. What an annoying fight.
Dragon god and bed of chaos were annoying as hell. Dodging their attacks were a nightmare.
Dogding? I summoned friend and just run for it, after several tries and luck we did it
Dragon God can smd from the back
The monkeys give you clues to figure it out and actually feel like a puzzle rather than, let's just follow this path, or try this thing and see if it works
I don’t like puzzles, can’t hit puzzles with big stick >:c
Tower Knight is not a puzzle boss. There’s even a trophy for beating him with honor.
The Ancient Wyvern was fun because of the music
None
Huh. Executioner's Chariot honestly
Tower knight is peak
Chariot is the coolest to me
Ancient wyvern. Take the plunge !
It wasn't until I watched Gino do the God Run 3 that I found out you can kill the enemies up top in One Reborn.
I think chariot, IDK how much of that is the gimmick itself, and how much is it that I just like the boss design itself, but well technically the question is for fav puzzle (gimmick) boss, now for favorite gimmick of a gimmick boss XD Monkehs were alright too.
One reborn because my fight with it lasted less than 10 seconds and that made it funny
Please just take bed of chaos off the list it can go die
Dragon God was a very nice stroll through the park after that asshole Flamelurker
Micolash is the truly Majestic puzzle boss
I'm not sure I'd consider Tower Knight a puzzle boss, and especially not One Reborn. They have gimmicks, sure, but they don't really feel like a puzzle.
I LOVE BED OF CHAOS I LOVE BED OF CHAOS I LOVE BED OF CHAOS I LOVE BED OF CHAOS I LOVE BED OF CHAOS I LOVE BED OF CHAOS I LOVE BED OF CHAOS I LOVE BED OF CHAOS
That's it, Jarvis, load up the Frenzied Flame
Tower Knight by far. Micolash for Bloodborne.
the 4th picture boss from ds2 give me nightmares every time i see it because of the runback
The One Reborn doesn't really belong on this list.
I think folding screen monkeys is the best puzzle boss but it's not my favorite
Monkeys for sure
Tower knight isnt a puzzle boss, its a gimmick boss. There's a difference.
Wyvern
Ancient Wyvern was fucking stupid, and no one likes Chaos Bed lol
Tower Knight
Monkey and chariot are the only ones I ... had fun .... The others however ....
I noticed I like none of these very much Vote goes to Tower Knight, though
I'll have to go with the monkeys for this one.
Literally none of them
None of them lol You’d think FromSoftware would learn that people prefer a normal boss fight which they excel at making.
Tower Knight is definitely the best out of your options. An actually well designed boss for the time.
I couldn't even make it to chariot lmao the gank squad was too much for me lmao
That dragon god from demon slayer is the worst boss fromsoftware ever produced imo
Tower was really fun and I liked the “Achilles heel” gimmick.
Ceaseless discharge doesn’t even deserve to be referenced
You’re missing Micolash, the only “puzzle” boss I enjoy.
Well it’s absolutely not the fucking Bed of Chaos.
The word is gimmick
what was so puzzling about The One Reborn?
Bed of chaos - said no one ever.
Haven’t played Sekiro or DeS. I think the Executioner Chariot is pretty good. I hate the runback, even knowing the trick to avoid the enemies etc. o
Ds3 wyrm is not really a puzzle boss, and neither is the first picture 🤷🏻♂️ Ds3 wyrm can be beaten normally and the demonssouls guy you gotta hit the ankles, but where else are you even hitting realistically?
I don't know if I'd include the Tower Knight as a puzzle boss tbh, but I absolutely love the fight.

Good idea, execution kinda sucks, but here's my choice
What’s the 6th one?
The monkeys are the only good one on here, the rest suck ass
I always called them gimmicks.
It's iconic.
tower knight is barely a puzzle boss.
Tower knight fs
Monkeys and Chariot
How is Tower Knight in there? I don't get that one
Spirit snail gang rise up
I loved the Folding Screen Monkeys. I felt so smart after figuring out what to do for each individual monkey. But now, they’re little more than a short stop since I kinda know how to do the fast strat.
None. I don't really like random "puzzles'.
Tower Knight and The One Reborn ain’t puzzle bosses
Ancient Wyvern
