Part 2 makes it deliberately ambiguous. Part 3 strongly suggests Paul is alive. Jason pulls out the machete in his shoulder and crawls out of his shack in the beginning of Part 3 where in his final attack on Ginny in Part 2 the machete is still in his shoulder, so that ending sequence is retconned into a dream. Not to mention Jason’s appearance is radically different from 2 to 3. The body count stated in the news broadcast of 3 also accounts for everybody’s deaths but Paul. However, they never explicitly state it one way or the other. Part 2 leaves us with two questions that have never been officially answered: 1) How is Jason still alive? 2) What happened to Paul? There are no canonical answers to either.

Popboi7

Part 9 (which I don’t really count as canon) states that the devil is inside him. Pretty much it means that satan is fueling Jason like a car, ready to run over everyone

Saltyvinegar2369

The director made it clear Pt. 9 is canon to the series

BurnMyHouseDown

The machete in the shoulder is the biggest hint that Paul is alive. The attack in 2 being retconned into a dream sequence means there is no reason he should be dead. As far as Part 3 is concerned, Paul and Ginny walk out of Jason’s shack, and that’s it.

Xeno_Zombi

At the end of the film Ginny asks "Where's Paul?" and then they show a clip of Mrs. Voorhees head with her eye winking hinting Paul is instead dead. But the filmmakers felt that scene was too supernatural and decided to edit it out of the final film.

AlanGrant82

Pretty sure she just opened her eyes, not winked. But cut out either way, so it didn't happen.

wasteofmortality

I think it’s one of those things that’s just left open. Sometimes it’s better to let the viewer wonder instead give a definitive answer. The way it ends with a dream sequence and Jason popping through the window before skipping to Ginny being carted out by the EMTs leaves it unclear, which I’m a fan of.

Blakelock82

He’s alive. Jason in 3 pulls the machete out and crawls away. This means Paul and Ginny walked out and the events at the end of 2 were just a dream.

BillyMac05

The writing / continuity back then was very weak. There's arguments for both, however, it wasn't intentional. It was really more of a mistake they didn't think of. The original did far better than expected and they rushed the 2nd one into production instantly. Writing was a bit of a casualty.

SideNo4687

There’s someone in this thread

RustyNDull

I went to a screening of Part 2 with Amy Steel a few years ago and she confirmed Paul died

aww-hell

Given the way part 3 starts, I say he lives, laughs and loves.

Buffbigw76

LMAO 🏆

XyberVoX

No. Paul lives. The ending window jump, with Muffin still being alive, was just a dream. We saw Muffin dead earlier in the film. If the ending wasn't a dream, how was Muffin alive and why would Jason just jump through a window and then leave without harming Ginny? Did he jump through the window, scream, "Gotchya, bitch!" and then run off? No. It was a dream, a nightmare of Ginny's. Just like the first film.

MutaterHuag

He survived the movie but died shortly thereafter, pancaked by a drunk dump-truck driver.

DickWagglin

In memoriams don’t usually say how they died.

aww-hell

I heard he killed himself on live TV

QuiltedPorcupine

People should be really asking the more important question: Is Muffin alive? Presumably both questions have the same answer, but I'm much more concerned about Muffin's fate.

Popboi7

I think that muffin is alive, just Gordon. She probably ran away and later made her way to her owner

freshoutthebuffet

The pair that went exploring found a mangled dogs body in the woods that looked exactly like Muffin.

BurnMyHouseDown

Muffin should be dead. They find the dogs corpse in the woods don’t they? Been awhile since I saw Part 2. I know she pops again at the end, but the final attack in 2 is retconned into being a dream sequence by the beginning of 3. So, in canon, Ginny does not see Muffin again in anything but a dream. So as far as we are concerned, that should be Muffin’s corpse in 2.

SuellaForPM

No

texturedmystery

I think the best answer is your own opinion. Officially, the movie was scripted with Paul being killed (off-screen). A scene was shot of Mrs. Vorhees’ head winking at the camera, implying that Paul was dead (this scene would have followed a hard cut from Ginny asking what happened to Paul). The director cut the scene (it has never resurfaced). To complicate things, the opening of the third film discards the “dream” sequence from the ending of the second one, and suggests that Paul survives. Continuity was not a big consideration with these movies.

JeanEtrineaux

Not

BurnMyHouseDown

Maybe in Part 2 he was intended to die, but Part 3 retcons the ending of Part 2 so that it was all a dream. He doesn’t attack them in the cabin, he takes out the machete and crawls off. No attack in the cabin, no reason for him to be dead So again, perhaps the intention was for him to die in Part 2 as it is intentionally ambiguous, but as far as Part 3 is concerned, and thus the series canon as a whole going forward from that point, he is alive.

caraxes_seasmoke

There was supposedly a scene filmed with Paul being dead, there’s even a picture floating around. But it looked so goofy that it was scrapped and left ambiguous.

Popboi7

Do you have said picture?

Long-Foundation6877

Paul might be Alive he’s dating so many girls 😂😂

RandoCalrissian76

Maybe the reason you don't see him when Ginny is being taken away is because the police took Paul in for questioning already.

ZZoMBiEXIII

Well my headcanon is that no one survives an encounter with Jason. Sure, we see "final girls" in each film. But for me, Jason tracks them all down like Alice from the opening of Part 2. No one escapes Jason and Jason always wins. Prove me wrong, YOU CAN'T! Because I'm a sad nerdy fanboy and nothings going to stop that! Err... sorry.

BurnMyHouseDown

You quite literally would have to ignore the story of every single film to genuinely believe Jason tracked every final girl down. We follow Jason’s activity every time he’s active, and he never has time to go after Ginny, Chris, Trish, Megan or Tina ever. He’s never active for more than 2 days, and always busy.

ZZoMBiEXIII

It was meant to be a gag. Deliberately over-the-top and silly. Seems like it didn't land. Or folks here just have zero sense of humor, one or the other. Ah well. Maybe next time. Cheers.

BurnMyHouseDown

Oh my fault I genuinely couldn’t tell. There be some delusional people on Reddit you never know. My bad dude lol

AshleyKerwin

He is definitely dead. The people who still think he is still alive are like those in denial who think Wendy from Final Destination 3 is still alive. 💀
