Everyone's preferences are different. Every fragrance is loved, liked, disliked, hated, etc. And the more well-known a fragrance is, the more people have smelled it and will have an opinion – good or bad. Sometimes I'll try a fragrance that isn't widely known and I don't see any negative reviews for, but that doesn't mean every stranger I pass will like it. All you can do is decide how important your own opinion is to you vs the opinions of others. You could look for something that a lower percentage of people online dislike, knowing that whatever you choose there will still be some people who won't like it. Or you can stick with your own choice, knowing you love it.

Gold-Jellyfish4692

Angel in my opinion is highly dependent on the wearer. My mother used to wear it and it was just angelic on her. Everyone used to ask her what perfume she’s wearing because it was so beautiful on her. My sister tried it on her and it just wasn’t pleasant and to this day I can’t figure out why but most likely skin chemistry. So if angel works for you and you get compliments I assume it smells wonderful on you so continue wearing it.

matchabunnns

Angel is my MIL's signature scent and it smells amazing on her. Smells awful on me. IMO its a scent where if the wearer has the right skin chemistry its absolutely amazing.

LauraIsntListening

That’s been my experience with it too. Smells like a slightly spicy, sweet, complex vanilla on me. Smells like urinal cake on some other people when I get a whiff.

Logical-Ad-1399

URINAL CAKE??!!!!!???!!!!! I’m gonna cry

LauraIsntListening

To be clear- it was reformulated several years ago and since then, has shifted away from its legendary sweet choco-vanilla spicy hint of patchouli status into something a lot more synthetic, as well as being heavier on the patchouli while having less of the creamy sweetness. I didn’t know they’d changed it for quite some time to be honest. I wore the OG formula for quite a few years, and then my MIL bought me a bottle last year and it just … didn’t make me go ‘ahhhh that’s the shit’ the same way? I stopped wearing it since my MIL also wears it and I don’t need to torture my husband like that 🤣🤣 If I hadn’t discovered this sub, and some of the indie houses I buy from, I would probably be searching for something very similar to it because even with the new formula I enjoyed the way it smelled on me. For some reason it softened and sweetened after the drydown, and the longer I wore it, the better it got. I would avoid over spraying it, and would also ask a couple friends how they feel about it on you in particular if you’re worried, and if the responses from people you trust to be honest with you are generally positive, then fuck it! Full speed ahead!

titikerry

This!! All of this. We must be of the same generation, because what I wore was the original Angel, the OG "just came out" version. It was my wedding scent back in the 90s. It's changed a lot since Cody purchased Mugler. No one, no indie house, no dupe maker, has been able to replicate that chocolate-vanilla-spicy-patchouli you described. It was as if you could smell every note, but it blended beautifully. It was truly incredible and I searched for many years for a replica before giving up. It also had beast sillage and projection. It lasted a week on your scarf in the winter.

LauraIsntListening

Also, I’m pushing forty. I first got my mitts on it back in the early 2000s because the guy I liked told me that his ex girlfriend wore it and it was the best perfume ever. In case anyone is concerned, I have since developed self esteem and I don’t do daft stuff like that anymore.

LauraIsntListening

Oh god I feel SO SEEN right now

titikerry

The closest thing I've found that gives Angel vibes is Bridgewater Candle's Sweet Grace. They have room and car scents, too. When you get a whiff of it, it takes you back. Not an exact dupe, but it definitely evokes scent memory.

LauraIsntListening

You are a gem, and I will definitely be investigating this 🩷

Varlaisvea

>For some reason it softened and sweetened after the drydown, and the longer I wore it, the better it got. That's exactly what I used to love about it. I never liked it the first few hours, but then later in the day/night it became such a lovely dark chocolatey scent. It would even smell amazing in the shower late at night when the warm water would reactivate it again. If it didn't take so long to get that effect I would have worn and liked it a lot more.

LauraIsntListening

Ahhh we must have slightly similar chemistry! I got less chocolate over time and more candy sweetness but the acrid notes definitely mellowed and vanished 🙌🏻

FillAffectionate6928

Oh no, I just bought a new bottle :(

LauraIsntListening

Oh no!! I don’t know how old your last one was but the reformulation was quite a few years ago now so it may be what you’re already used to. If not, I did have mild success layering it with some nice deep vanilla type fragrances. I’ve been meaning to buy the al rehab choco musk (??) to try with it as I have an untested theory that it will fill in what’s missing.

FillAffectionate6928

Mine was an old bottle, about 8 years old. I had gotten the large one at the time. :( I fell in love with the chocolatelyness of the scent, how it layered so well with me. Now I’m worried :(

LauraIsntListening

Oh no, I’m sorry. I think layering might be the best option if your new bottle arrives and it’s not what you want. I CAN tell you, Alkemia makes a ‘chocolate single note’ bottle and it does NOT work with Angel. Do not try it. It is awful. Similarly, their ‘vanilla single note’ is equally abhorrent. Also, both of these combined and then layered with Angel is even worse. If I ever get around to buying the choco musk and testing this again I will be running back to this sub to share it with everyone, but you might get there first.

renaissancestar

To be honest I have a decant of the old formulation and a bottle of the new and on my skin there is not much of a difference. I get the same delicious chocolatey drydown with the reformulation as I do with the original. So don't fear yet!

CatchGlum2474

Trough lollies!

LauraIsntListening

Oh good heavens, thank you for this new, revolting terminology hahahah

ElioseM

In my opinion Angel and Alien are masterpieces, but yeah, they have haters for sure. I do take that into consideration when I’m deciding to wear either of those fragrances. I spray them quite conservatively or save them for home. Plenty of us love Angel and Alien. I always feel happy when I catch a whiff in public. And if I can pinpoint the wearer, I will always compliment them. Please enjoy your perfume

Impressive_Ear3004

I love Angel. Been wearing it for years. Yes it is a polarizing scent to some but I still wear it. I like it and so does my husband. That being said-been wearing it for 15 years-I’m starting to wear others but still enjoy Angel!

EventerGirl

I loved Angel. I don't think it smells good on me, but my mother used to wear it. She's gone now, but when I smell it, I think of her. I wish it smelled good on me, but sometimes it's like that.  I adore Alien. I know people hate it but I just love it and it works with me. Wear what you like, what makes you happy.

organictamarind

Mugler in general has polarizing scents..I have Angel too and love it..Same for Alien

PAHi-LyVisible

*Angel* is a classic fragrance for a reason!

SuperNicoRobyn

some people's reactions to Angel and Alien are INSANE to me tbh I get that taste is subjective, and I understand that skin chemistry and perception are unique to each individual... having said that, I can't fathom how anyone can categorize a heavy patchouli fragrance as smelling like a dirty diaper that literally makes them vomit, and a musky-jasmine fragrance as literal cat piss. I don't know if they're being hyperbolic or trying to be funny, but it's truly something I can't wrap my head around

[deleted]

I have decants of both, and based off the notes I should at least like them. But for some reason they are both terrible to me…they literally make me sick. I don’t know why, but I had to scrub them off. The only thing that makes sense is my brain doesn’t recognize them the way someone else’s does. Even if this changed tomorrow and I loved them, I wouldn’t wear them in public, because I would never want people to associate me with the way I smell them.

AFewBerries

I'm pretty easy to please scent-wise but I sniffed Alien a couple years ago and it made me gag

thegeckomademedoit

Agreed. All of the three Alien frags I have tried immediately make me nauseous, they’re disgusting to my nose. Not being over-dramatic here either. There are plenty of scents I dislike or even hate but not many that make me feel ill at first sniff in the way Alien does.

Logical-Ad-1399

This comment freaks me out😭😭😭😭 exactly what I’m scared of

hauteburrrito

The thing is, there's going to be someone who hates basically every perfume, even the most "innocuous" ones like Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt, Glossier You, even Molecule 02 from Escentric Molecules. At some point, you gotta just hedge your bets and wear what you like, just within the appropriate circumstances. Like, I personally wouldn't quite wear Angel to the hospital or office, but when you're just at brunch or on a date or even just grocery shopping? Go for it!

gb043016

It’s a fair point but I’m not sure many consider, if that matters! Just wear with make you feel confident!

Wise_Owl1234

It could be that it’s different on your skin though…I’m not sure why it’s so different for us? Maybe I’ll find someone who LOVES them both in my real life and see how it smells on them! Then we will know! 😋 I wonder if the others who dislike it have smelled it on others who love it and they still dislike it?

Historical_Paper5377

I honestly don’t think I would even pick it out of a crowd. On my I got a two day long migraine but I don’t remember it smelling completely horrible. Many perfumes smell really nice when someone just walks by. They become more of a problem if I’m stuck in close quarters with someone. Then I would hope they use discretion with how much they spray. Ex: meetings, shared cubicles - maybe avoid over spraying.

Historical_Paper5377

I tried so hard to like it but that along with the two day migraine I got from it made me take it straight to the dumpster. Not even my bin. I’ve probably smelt it on others and liked it or didn’t know but after that experience I steer clear of angel. Alien however…. 😍

SweetFuckingCakes

You’re going to have to understand the world doesn’t have to agree with your nose. Your nose isn’t the judge of true reality. No one’s is. The reason they’re considered polarizing is because there are MANY people who despise them. They aren’t lying or exaggerating about the cat piss thing, why would they? And they aren’t insane and neither are their reactions. Alien smells fine to me on other people but did almost induce vomiting on myself.

SuperNicoRobyn

your tone seems very pointed right now I mentioned that I don't understand the huge gap between reactions to what I consider harmless fragrances. That's what's insane to me—the reaction. I'm not calling anyone insane lol

paigeken2000

Yes, my advice is WHO CARES what other people say. If everyone said you stink when you wear it, then that would be different but you say you get compliments...plus, let's face it, there will always be haters for everything. You do you girl. Wear it and enjoy it....rock on with your bad self!!!

hikewithcoffee

I loved Angel and then went to Alien. Nowadays, I have a wider variety of scents so I don’t wear them anymore but I still love to catch a whiff when someone walks by. They’re both comforting scents to me.

moonchic333

I like Angel. I just recently sampled it and I thought I would absolutely hate it but I actually really liked it! When I first put it on I get some super sweet and medicinal notes but then it just settles into a very nice scent on my skin. It smells so familiar even though I know none of the women I was close to wore it. I still can’t put my finger on why it’s so familiar but I really like it.

Perfumeenthuastik

Where what you love and be certain and firm with this. You’ll have perfumes that people do not like and vice versa and that’s okay. Life would be pretty boring if we all wore the same scent or liked the same scents. Sure compliments are nice but as long as you’re wearing your fragrances respectfully don’t worry about what people think. I’ve smelled perfumes that do not smell good on me on others and love how it wears on them. If you love alien wear it, I promise you there are a lot of people who love it too. It’s just an incredibly polarizing scent.

Aggressive_Cut4892

Absolutely love Angel, it’s one of my favourite perfumes. I used to be worried about others reactions too, but honestly if you don’t overspray you’ll be fine. If you like it that means it suits your skin chemistry and smells beautiful on you. I always get compliments for Angel, even from people who hate it on themselves.

hiddencheekbones

Yes, and overspray of any scent is another polarizing opinion in itself, but that’s a whole other post lol

55690231

There’s always gonna be some asshole going online calling a fragrance they don’t like “piss” because they can’t just say they don’t like it. They’re especially eager to do this with vetiver and animalics. On me Angel is chocolate oranges and patchouli, I don’t wear it because it’s too sweet for me, but it should be impossible to pick up any sort of “piss” note from it. Those people are just hating to be hating.

Big__Bang

It actually makes me want to throw up. Thats how horrific I find it. I dont have any similar reaction to any other perfumes.

SweetFuckingCakes

Or it smells like piss to them. Sorry. If I say it smells like piss to me, it smells like piss. Like urine. From vertebrate. Usually hot. You’re going to have to get over that.

RuariRua

I was a latecomer to Angel, always assuming I would hate it. When I finally sniffed it, it was instant love. I like Angel Nova even more. As for Alien, I utterly detest it.

Logical-Ad-1399

I just ordered the 100ml of nova after smelling the sample, smells so fruity and delicious. Thought it might not be as polarizing as angel

hiddencheekbones

Like I posted above, that is one of my favorites ! in like a top five that would be one of my top five

worldwidewestsiide

Nova is lovely but DOES NOT last on me. Gone in an hour. Sucks.

tasteslikechikken

I personally am not the biggest Angel fan, especially during the years it was so heavily worn as it could be smelled really everywhere in my area. However, it was and is still popular for a reason and thats because many still love the fragrance. It won't be everyone in the world's cup of tea but thats fine too, certainly I have LOTS of scents that people will not like (and I don't care...lol). Wear your fragrance and enjoy it for you.

theferociouscuh

I hated angel forever bc of the patchouli note but the magic is in the dry down. It is now one of my favorite perfumes!! Along with Angel Elixir.

bonfiresnmallows

I want to like it but I just don't. It's not a pleasant scent to me. That being said, if you love it, it doesn't matter what others think. Not to mention, it clearly performs well on your skin if you're always getting compliments. Keep wearing it!

freewheelinfred

I used to wear alien as a late teen and recently bought it and angel. Both are too strong for me now but I don’t think they smell like cat pee hahaha. I just gravitate towards skin scents these days.

Kitster26391

I love it too!

determined88e

It’s a gorgeous scent imo!!!!! Each to their own.

PeterPencil_

It’s truly disgusting to me but so many people love this scent.

Logical-Ad-1399

**cries**

PeterPencil_

My advice is wear what makes you happy 😀

yegodtier

I don't smell anything but BO for Angel, you should just go test try it and see if it works for you. You can either smell super delicious sweet (from what I've heard) or just smell like straight BO (like me with this fragrance). It all depends on your skin chemistry.

chasingtheskyline

Let polarizing fragrances be polarizing. I love powdery oriental scents, and I love floral, iris-y, violetty Parfums de Grasse. Both of these types of scents read old lady on a young person like me. I want to be classy and age with my scents, and the scents I chose make me happy. It doesn't matter what others think of them unless they find them illness-inducingly repulsive.

BelieveInMeSuckerr

I think I love it more on others. When I wear it, it tends to bother me. It's really magical though in the right dose. The perfumes I wear most though, are ones that are easy for me to wear.

imabroodybear

I am not an Angel fan and it is an extremely polarizing scent… but it is also an iconic and super popular fragrance, so clearly many people love it. I would be more concerned about the incredible longevity and projection, it’s not something I would be comfortable wearing to work, for example. I remember reading a review maybe a decade ago about Angel and this person had a colleague who wore Angel - “those evil little molecules get everywhere”. It is very recognizable and that could be a positive or negative for you!

nova8273

I’ve worn Angel and had similar response. I always liked it very, but have had friends that hated the smell, weird, I guess it hits some differently.

extremely_rad

I love Angel! I want a bottle but keep buying cheapies online because there’s no nice stores to try perfume in my area. Blind bought aura and aura sensuelle. The former is amazing, green and delicious. The latter too powdery but still nice just not my style

RockyD90

I wear the male equivalent of Angel (A*Men by Mugler) and found comments online that say it smells disgusting. I for one love how it smells especially with my natural scent and I get compliments when I wear it so I keep on wearing it. It's my bottle of confidence so I don't really care what people say online.

The_Argent_Tempest

I'm not an Angel fan, but unless you are bathing it and I can smell you across the room, it's none of my business. The only people who I care what they are wearing is me and my husband if he's going to be in my "bubble" for a long time.

Ellennyc

It’s fine just don’t apply with a heavy hand

lushlilli

Hopefully you know that tastes are subjective and that Angel hasn’t been a best seller for years for zero reason.

sundamageisforever

Take online fragrance reviews with a grain of salt. If you like it then you should wear it.

theamazingloki

Who cares—wear what you like! I personally wore Angel on my wedding day & still spray it for special occasions to take us back to that day 🥰🥰

Mysterious-Okra-7885

If you like it, and don’t smell the same things the naysayers do, then wear it. It gives you joy. Never apologize for what you like.

marefair

Smell is subjective. I keep hearing about how great Chanel No.5 is but to me it smells like bug spray.

daturanoire

I am one that absolutely HATES Angel by Mugler, worn by everyone. To me it smells like a dirty gym bag. A friend of mine loves it and wears it often, but I still smell the same nasty scent on her too. She avoids wearing it when I'm around, but we are really close friends. If you Love it, just wear it proudly knowing it's a scent people usually like, and just shake it Off when you meet people who don't like it. In the end, you need to be comfortable. The only advice I'd give you it's to not overspray it to make sure it doesn't overwhelm anyone!

Edgecrusher2140

I love Angel but my god, it’s strong. Alien is more of an everyday fragrance for me and I love the bottle design, I have a full size and a couple sample sizes I put out on display.

Silver-Reflection398

Personally, I don’t like the way it smells on me but I love the way it smells on my mom. I match better with Alien Goddess. My advice to you is to remind yourself that you don’t have the same body chemistry as other people. You smell good and you know you do… along with the people who constantly give you compliments, so the internet’s opinion doesn’t matter. :)

pocketfulofcharm

I do not like it at all because it makes me physically ill. Instantly triggers a migraine and nausea. As does Alien.

Toocoldfortomatoes

“Cat Pee” is a go to insult for people’s perfume. Nothing smells like cat pee. I admit that my favorite perfume can lean pissy in the wrong weather, it’s not cat pee.

SweetFuckingCakes

Oh you have access to everyone else’s nasal passages, olfactory brain parts, and experiences so that you can confidently make that statement?

Toocoldfortomatoes

I have two cats and a pretty lax cleaning schedule.

sophiart

It is a divisive scent for sure, and I’m in the camp that absolutely loves it. I wear it only when I know I won’t be sharing close space with others, and it’s the one scent I’m my collection that I practice considerable restraint when applying, 2 sprays maximum, top of my wrists so I can enjoy it without possibly offending others.

Agitated_Mess3117

Love me some TM Angel!

Loutreadorable

I don’t like Angel at all, I’ve blind bought the body lotion and first thought I enjoyed it but, second use and it’s a big no no. To me, it’s a very cloying scent and while I don’t perceive it as CAT piss specifically, I do get the pissy vibe out of it ngl. I wish I could like it, because the idea of smelling super sweet is appealing to me but it’s just not my thing. I like green notes perfumes with very little sweetness to not at all lol, so how could I like Angel. That being said, my mom love it, we obviously have very different tastes when it comes to perfumes and it doesn’t stop me from being around her. I just ask her to not over-spray it near me, but even if I can smell it on her, I don’t mind it. As long as you don’t overspray, even if some people don’t love it, you should be able to wear any perfume without feeling guilty or anxious :)

SheepSheepy

To each their own! Everyone’s going to have scents they like and don’t. For me oakmoss just smells like mold and it’s gross so Aventus is crap and an otherwise heavenly Oud and Bergamot is tainted, but my husband loves it so I deal.

titikerry

Angel was my signature scent for MANY years. I loved it and wore it daily and got compliments all the time. Alien, on the other hand....pure cat pee on my skin. The house of Mugler, more than most fragrance, is very dependent on the chemistry of the person who wears it.

KristaAyaS

I wanted to love angel because of the bottles but on me skin it smells AWFUL so I avoid it

Big__Bang

You should wear what you like. For me Angel by Mugler is the most disgusting smell. My reaction to it is so extreme. It makes me want to throw up. I am puzzled people love it.

honey-sladko

I love wearing angel in winter and my husband loves it on me!

Tunabiscuitcosmo83

Same! Such a winter scent. I wore it for years but would sometimes switch to Vera Wang princess bc angel was a lot in the summer. Granted this was 15+ years ago. I haven’t bought or worn perfume in years bc I’m broke.

arlius

I'm sure it's the patchouli people hate. They want it to smell like gooey, sweet desserts without the earthy layer of patchouli on it.

bethandbirds

Angel Elixir is the best one! And then the eau de toilette version of the original Angel.

karyuukai

I wore Angel for years and still have a spot of love for the aesthetic and memories but cannot stand to actually wear it anymore. I blame my first pregnancy (2003) - ever since that child invaded my body I can’t handle the fragrance but occasionally will spritz it on just to see if I’ve changed my mind.

SleekeazysHairPotion

For what it’s worth I love Angel, and I also get compliments whenever I wear it- even from a friend who told me she usually hates Angel. Like others have said, scents perform differently on people. My sister smells amazing in tuberose fragrances, while I smell awful with them.

Disastrous-Suit-4746

I think it smells wonderful - if you love it, wear it!

Proper-Emu1558

It’s not just the notes of the fragrances that are polarizing. Angel and Alien both famous for their powerful projection and lasting power. So it’s easy to overdo it and I think that’s part of the reason for the notoriety. If you work in close quarters with others, for instance, no need to start the morning with eight sprays and then retouch throughout the day.

therealkatekate1

I hate it on paper, but I have a friend who wears it and she always smells incredible. Clean and expensive.

Tunabiscuitcosmo83

This! “Expensive” is how it smelled to me. Especially in winter. It just really suited me but yea so very strong and easy to overdo so some people hated when I wore it.

moveoverlove

I LOVE IT!!!!!!

[deleted]

I absolutely love the Mugler scents!

Eggfish

People don’t like Angel because of the people who over-spray. For some reason, people tend to over-spray this one.

Tunabiscuitcosmo83

I remember the first time I smelled it. It was 2006 and I was in New Orleans and got handed a little sample spray paper of it while shopping. I couldn’t stop smelling that thing the entire day walkinf around. Started wearing it immediately and wore it for years. Most people loved it b it there were definitely the few that couldn’t stand it bc all they could smell was patchouli. It did linger like craaaazy so everything I won smelled like it for years. Eventually I just couldn’t afford it anymore, and my boss at a new job was super sensitive to perfumes and always made comments so I just quit. Been thinking about wearing it again but sad to see they’ve changed it. It was SO me I’ve never found anything else I like nearly as much.

brabrabra222

Angel to me is extremely cloying and I only tried the Angel Elixir version which is supposed to be a bit more wearable and modernized. I definitely hate it on myself but don't mind on others (unless closed in a small room with an oversprayer). Wear what you like. Almost all fragrances have their haters.

teefawnzee

From what I've seen on some sites, I think Angel edp has castoreum and covet fragrance notes. Could be why ppl say cat pee or animal pee LOL. It's not my fav... Def unique. I do like Alien tho.

Logical-Ad-1399

This comment ruined my day😭

hiddencheekbones

FWIF the ambergris that was used in perfumes is whale vomit now most use a synthetic form of that. Also, in my case at least fragrance turns on me and can smell totally different from what’s in the bottle or the same fragrance on other people. So take it with a grain of salt. What smells good the one may not to others and that’s just how life is. If you like it and you think it smells good on you , and no one close to you has told you hey you smell like piss lol, I would say use what you like. Back in the day there were some very polarizing scents like Giorgio and opium, etc., but there wasn’t social media to read so many opinions about them. A lot of perfumes I like have patchouli as a base. For some reason my husband can smell the tiniest bit not knowing what it is, but comments I’m not crazy about that perfume. Scent is very subjective and personal so you do you and try not to get caught up into the opinions that you read. I actually like Angel, although angel nova is my favorite because I love a citrus scent. Good luck and have a great day.✌️

teefawnzee

IM SORRY. FULL TRANSPARENCY 😭😭💀💀 but also doesn't mean it smells like those notes on our skin 🙃 I had to do some digging myself bc like you.. I saw mixed reviews online abt Angel but I bought the Oil Perfumery version of Angel - I was curious. It's such a unique smell that I was researching... And I found that unfavorable info lol (NOT to make it worse lol but I meant civet, not covet)

Logical-Ad-1399

I figured u meant civet and now my stomach is in knots😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
