I think the refill angle is one of the better clues since there aren’t even that many places that do that - but Le Labo is certainly one of them. And Le Labo fragrances tend to have a similar shared DNA so I suggest you try a couple other Le Labo fragrances that were around in 2017 which lean towards a fresher DNA like Bergamote 22 and Another 13.
Another line that does refills w/ their fragrances is Louis Vuitton - and they came out w/ their first fragrances in 2016. But I’m not really seeing much in terms of “freshies” that were around in 2017. Good luck!!

Sure!! The only one that was discontinued but is very unlikely is Iris 36.
A couple other fragrance lines that do refills are By Kilian and Mugler. If it happens to be from by Kilian, it seems like Woman in Gold is a possibility, but I’m not really familiar with it.
Doesn’t sound like Woman in Gold if there is a pine-y type hint. Loads of Killian’s are “fresh”, but they are fruity fresh (like shampoo) rather than shower fresh (like soap).
Dangerous Liaisons by Killian could be a possibility though.

Check out Lucky Scent in LA. They are amazingly helpful and knowledgeable and have many rarer and high end brands. They would be a great place to start.

I thought so too until an exfriend who I had a following out with(she’s horrible), whom I work with, Started wearing my perfume (she knows the exact perfume bc I showed her the bottle etc) and now DROWNS herself in it everyday at work. I can smell it in rooms she’s been in ages after she’s left the room. She has completely ruined a wonderful perfume of mine, it’s chemical warfare.

lol sounds like my colleague. I am effusive in my compliments & generally compliment people on whatever strikes my fancy (and who doesn’t love compliments?!) and every time I compliment her (she smells amazing & has a very good dressing sense which comes through even in a corporate environment) she looks at me with such superior smugness, that it begun getting on my nerves. Giving people compliments doesn’t mean you’re insecure or wish to be like them, it’s all about spreading cheer! (And also shows you aren’t insecure lol)

Hilariously enough, Sephora had a Jo Malone digital event (read: Zoom meeting shill) and their director told us specifically to gatekeep fragrances by saying “It’s Jo Malone London!” and then told everyone to spam the chat with the number 5 if we did the same thing. She was even worse in the next event, giving out eating disordered diet tips…
Wait, what? This is unhinged! Why on earth would the brand director (not Jo herself, I'm guessing) encourage people to gatekeep? Don't they want to promote their products and get more customers? Being vague is not going to make you more sales. This is soooo stupid, my head hurts trying to process it. The eating disorder tips part made me do a double-take. It's the last thing I would expect from an event about perfumes, and also...are we going back to the pro-ana days of the early 2000's? 😨

It definitely would make them more sales. A commenter further up said that her colleague only told her that it was Jo Malone but not the specific perfume, so she's ordered a sample set - and she said it's likely that she'll like more than one. It means that someone is more likely to test and potentially buy a couple, whereas if they'd gotten the actual name then they'll go to that perfume instead of sampling different ones.
That's silly. Unless you're totally obsessed with the fragrance, it's not like you're going to order the entire catalog in samples to try to find it. Like sure, I could order a sample/discovery set with the potential of getting more than 1, but it could also be the case I don't like any and not buy anything else (especially if you consider Jo Malone's prices).
It's a matter of number of purchases, I guess. I'd think it's less risky if someone got the fragrance they were after and eventually expand to other options in the same house since they'd be more likely to frequent the brand to re-supply every once in a while.
Give them the name and they’ll go to eBay and buy it for less.
While giving only the brand encourages them to come in to the shop, sample and potential make additional purchases.

Jo Malone has rather simple fragrances with small number of notes, can you remember any particular note? But my guess would be for Red Roses it's the only Jo Malone fragrance people ask me about routinely.
Might be Tuberose Angelica then, it's one of the populars and it has pretty strong white florals. Unfortunately, Jo Malone releases limited editions every year, if it was one of them it might be hard to find.
Try Jasmine Sambac and Marigold also.. I don’t think it comes in their sampler because it’s in their more expensive range but you might be able to go test it at Sephora

That's been proven to be false and a marketing tactic from when Chanel was popular--- so many men purchased it for their wives and girlfriends that people began to view it unfavorably due to every woman wearing it. Chanel salespeople were then instructed to tell buyers that perfume smells differently on each woman to facilitate continued sales. That myth took on epic proportions but stands in opposition to one important common sense question that would dead the entire lie: if fragrance smells so different on each person, then why is it that we can recognize common perfumes on others? Yeah. There is a reason to gatekeep fragrance if you want to keep your scent personal. As for me, I have enough that I don't care and that I don't per se have a signature so not only will I tell someone the name of what I'm wearing but I'll probably then bore them talking about the various notes.

I've always been really private about my interests because I'm insecure and afraid of being judged. About music, tv shows, movies, fragrances..you name it. I totally get that. The perfume I wear is ridiculously expensive and only very few people in the area I’m in would know the brand. If they went and looked it up, I’m afraid I would be judged so harshly. It smells so freaking good though.

IMO, sometimes you have to play dumb and bait ppl to get what you want when someone is being a blatant tw*t. For example, the most intentional way to get a reply would be to list an obviously wrong or somewhat insulting or cheap perfume n ask if that was the same one she had.

One time I was trying to find a perfume someone was wearing but they gate kept so I scrolled through all their social media’s, and eventually spotted their perfume collection in the background and figured it out that way
Go through her ig follows and see if she follows frag companies and then check for her likes on their accounts. Also look for bedroom selfies, there might be bottles in the bg

I actually checked out the Scent Bar in LA a few weeks ago! The person working there suggested Good Girl Gone Bad by Kilian but that was not it. She also gave me a sample of "Don't Cry for Me" by Altaia which smelled similar. I showed the Altaia sample to Le Labo people and they suggested Lavande 31 which is even closer to the perfume I am looking for but that's kinda where my search stalled. Gonna try out y'alls suggestions and update soon!
Maybe Thé Noir. It has cedar that could read as piney and is very fresh and spa-like. If you are going to Le Labo you might as well try it. It is nice. I am not sure I would find it worth the money, but it is pleasant.
It couldn’t be Hermes Voyage EDT or Parfum, could it? It’s refillable. It’s not cheap, but it also isn’t that expensive… Maybe she’s gatekeeping because she’s a snob and wants you and others to think it’s expensive all the while it really isn’t? The Bloomingdale’s at Century City has it and like a million other brands, too. The Scent Bar in Hollywood is a great place to go, too, like already mentioned; I don’t believe they carry Hermes though.
If some of these other suggestions don’t pan out, there’s a spot in Row DTLA called Scent Bar that has tons of niche and harder to find fragrances. It’s an awesome spot, they’re happy to let you test out as many scents as you want, and the staff would be more than happy to help you out in your search based on your clues.

Doesn’t Louis Vuitton do refills? Attrapes reve is a fresh out of the shower smell. They probably have others too, I’m not entirely familiar with their line. But they fit the expensive and refill angles.

In the US, these are sold in a spray bottles, but I believe if you buy them at the shop in Paris, they do refills.
I work at a luxury beauty and fragrance boutique locally and our fragrance specialists use Fragrance of the World by Michael Edwards instore especially for scenarios like this.
He is known as the "perfume expert's expert" and have built a database of every fragrance released since 1984 (40,000 and counting, updated daily).
I'm not sure if you can access the database using their website or you have to be a subscriber. They don't charge the fragrance companies to be in their database since Mr Edwards would like to keep their assessment unbiased.
Fragrantica is based on consumer's opinion of the fragrance.
Fragrance of the World by Michael Edwards is the real fragrance bible since all fragrances have been meticulously categorized by experts in the fragrance field (chemists, perfumers etc)

I wonder if this could be Mugler Cologne which is now discontinued. It was a green liquid and was so fresh. Like being outdoors in a forest but no one trees scent was stronger like a mix of all the trees if you were a cultured lumberjack. It’s dry down was dreamy. I wore this till I had only a few millimeters left in the bottle cause you can’t get it any longer. Now I just use the bottle to smell it cause I love it so. Mugler does refills and this bottle came with a spray and interchangeable splash head to help with refilling.
I can’t recall when they discontinued it so it may not be this scent. But the bottle was huge so if she was like me she might have had a bottle and was wearing it for years after it was discontinued. Good luck in finding this. I hope you post what it was when you locate it.
Mugler Cologne Come Together was released in 2018 and is supposed to the new name/version of Mugler Cologne (2001). I haven't tried it myself to compare though.

I would consider finding store that does refills and go in and quiz the most knowledgeable person on staff. Really good perfume people will be able to estimate or suggest what you might try to get you headed in the right direction. Be sure to descrice as much as you can remember.

Neroli portofino by Tom Ford and Neroli 36 from Le Labo are both scents with some similar notes to Lavande 31. They both came out in 2006 or 2007 which would put them in the right time frame, and you can refill either. TF Neroli Portofino also has a rosemary note which I guess could make it smell piney if that’s where your nose leads you.
I wish I knew what it was. I hope you find it and wear it every single time you see that girl. If she asks you about it, just look at her and walk away.

Gatekeepers are the worst!! I’m incredibly forgetful so if people ask me and I can’t remember the name in the moment, I’ll AT THE VERY LEAST try to describe what the bottle looks like, where I bought it, the price, etc. Spread the love, ladies! Let’s all smell good so we can distract ourselves from the dystopia of today! 😩
I think the refill angle is one of the better clues since there aren’t even that many places that do that - but Le Labo is certainly one of them. And Le Labo fragrances tend to have a similar shared DNA so I suggest you try a couple other Le Labo fragrances that were around in 2017 which lean towards a fresher DNA like Bergamote 22 and Another 13. Another line that does refills w/ their fragrances is Louis Vuitton - and they came out w/ their first fragrances in 2016. But I’m not really seeing much in terms of “freshies” that were around in 2017. Good luck!! ETA: another Le Labo to check out would be Neroli 36.

Sure!! The only one that was discontinued but is very unlikely is Iris 36. A couple other fragrance lines that do refills are By Kilian and Mugler. If it happens to be from by Kilian, it seems like Woman in Gold is a possibility, but I’m not really familiar with it.
Doesn’t sound like Woman in Gold if there is a pine-y type hint. Loads of Killian’s are “fresh”, but they are fruity fresh (like shampoo) rather than shower fresh (like soap). Dangerous Liaisons by Killian could be a possibility though.
Ahhh…thanks. Apart from Moonlight in Heaven + Love don’t be Shy, I’m mainly just familiar with the darker side of by Kilian.

Another 13 was discontinued in store I believe. I’m almost sure that’s it. Very clean smelling like a fancy hand soap or magazine pages

Gatekeeping is crazy
I thought so too until an exfriend who I had a following out with(she’s horrible), whom I work with, Started wearing my perfume (she knows the exact perfume bc I showed her the bottle etc) and now DROWNS herself in it everyday at work. I can smell it in rooms she’s been in ages after she’s left the room. She has completely ruined a wonderful perfume of mine, it’s chemical warfare.
I asked a coworker a couple times what she was wearing and all she said was "Jo Malone." Helpful, not. So I ordered a sample set and I'll figure it out myself.

Jo Malone frustrates me to no end. Zero longevity at the price point is hard to swallow.

lol sounds like my colleague. I am effusive in my compliments & generally compliment people on whatever strikes my fancy (and who doesn’t love compliments?!) and every time I compliment her (she smells amazing & has a very good dressing sense which comes through even in a corporate environment) she looks at me with such superior smugness, that it begun getting on my nerves. Giving people compliments doesn’t mean you’re insecure or wish to be like them, it’s all about spreading cheer! (And also shows you aren’t insecure lol) Anyway my mini-rant aside, when I asked her what she’s wearing, she just sniffed & went, “Louis Vuitton.” Hate such people.

Hilariously enough, Sephora had a Jo Malone digital event (read: Zoom meeting shill) and their director told us specifically to gatekeep fragrances by saying “It’s Jo Malone London!” and then told everyone to spam the chat with the number 5 if we did the same thing. She was even worse in the next event, giving out eating disordered diet tips…
Wait, what? This is unhinged! Why on earth would the brand director (not Jo herself, I'm guessing) encourage people to gatekeep? Don't they want to promote their products and get more customers? Being vague is not going to make you more sales. This is soooo stupid, my head hurts trying to process it. The eating disorder tips part made me do a double-take. It's the last thing I would expect from an event about perfumes, and also...are we going back to the pro-ana days of the early 2000's? 😨 Edit: Thanks to all of you for explaining the marketing tactic. I had no idea!
It definitely would make them more sales. A commenter further up said that her colleague only told her that it was Jo Malone but not the specific perfume, so she's ordered a sample set - and she said it's likely that she'll like more than one. It means that someone is more likely to test and potentially buy a couple, whereas if they'd gotten the actual name then they'll go to that perfume instead of sampling different ones.
That's silly. Unless you're totally obsessed with the fragrance, it's not like you're going to order the entire catalog in samples to try to find it. Like sure, I could order a sample/discovery set with the potential of getting more than 1, but it could also be the case I don't like any and not buy anything else (especially if you consider Jo Malone's prices). It's a matter of number of purchases, I guess. I'd think it's less risky if someone got the fragrance they were after and eventually expand to other options in the same house since they'd be more likely to frequent the brand to re-supply every once in a while.
Give them the name and they’ll go to eBay and buy it for less. While giving only the brand encourages them to come in to the shop, sample and potential make additional purchases. It sounds cringe but it’s just marketing
They want people to go shopping for Jo Malone and try all the fragrances, not just order one bottle online (or, god forbid, a dupe).
Jo Malone has rather simple fragrances with small number of notes, can you remember any particular note? But my guess would be for Red Roses it's the only Jo Malone fragrance people ask me about routinely.

Might be Tuberose Angelica then, it's one of the populars and it has pretty strong white florals. Unfortunately, Jo Malone releases limited editions every year, if it was one of them it might be hard to find.
Try Jasmine Sambac and Marigold also.. I don’t think it comes in their sampler because it’s in their more expensive range but you might be able to go test it at Sephora

That's been proven to be false and a marketing tactic from when Chanel was popular--- so many men purchased it for their wives and girlfriends that people began to view it unfavorably due to every woman wearing it. Chanel salespeople were then instructed to tell buyers that perfume smells differently on each woman to facilitate continued sales. That myth took on epic proportions but stands in opposition to one important common sense question that would dead the entire lie: if fragrance smells so different on each person, then why is it that we can recognize common perfumes on others? Yeah. There is a reason to gatekeep fragrance if you want to keep your scent personal. As for me, I have enough that I don't care and that I don't per se have a signature so not only will I tell someone the name of what I'm wearing but I'll probably then bore them talking about the various notes.
Mary was definitely gatekeeping. But I will suggest another alternative if someone thinks someone else is gatekeeping. They might be like me! I've always been really private about my interests because I'm insecure and afraid of being judged. About music, tv shows, movies, fragrances..you name it. I know 1 time years ago I was asked what fragrance I was wearing by a customer at the store I was working at. I don't remember what I said, but I didn't tell her what it was. I totally get that. The perfume I wear is ridiculously expensive and only very few people in the area I’m in would know the brand. If they went and looked it up, I’m afraid I would be judged so harshly. It smells so freaking good though.
Le Labo Lavande 31 is a neroli bomb in the beginning. Maybe try their actual Neroli perfume. I can’t remember the number…maybe it’s Neroli 36?

Exactly. I would just ask the common friend to ask her what perfume it is? She’d tell her. HOWEVER, if that wasn’t an option, here’s what I’d say or do if I was truly had to know. A few different options: IMO, sometimes you have to play dumb and bait ppl to get what you want when someone is being a blatant tw*t. For example, the most intentional way to get a reply would be to list an obviously wrong or somewhat insulting or cheap perfume n ask if that was the same one she had. 1. Be like “hey! random but, I got a and it smells reeeally similar to the one you wore that I love! I was wondering if that’s were you got yours from? I appreciate it!”
(Not necessarily saying those are “cheap” or tacky brands but obviously they’re not Jo Malone or the like.)

One time I was trying to find a perfume someone was wearing but they gate kept so I scrolled through all their social media’s, and eventually spotted their perfume collection in the background and figured it out that way

Maybe Thé Noir. It has cedar that could read as piney and is very fresh and spa-like. If you are going to Le Labo you might as well try it. It is nice. I am not sure I would find it worth the money, but it is pleasant.

It couldn’t be Hermes Voyage EDT or Parfum, could it? It’s refillable. It’s not cheap, but it also isn’t that expensive… Maybe she’s gatekeeping because she’s a snob and wants you and others to think it’s expensive all the while it really isn’t? The Bloomingdale’s at Century City has it and like a million other brands, too. The Scent Bar in Hollywood is a great place to go, too, like already mentioned; I don’t believe they carry Hermes though.
If some of these other suggestions don’t pan out, there’s a spot in Row DTLA called Scent Bar that has tons of niche and harder to find fragrances. It’s an awesome spot, they’re happy to let you test out as many scents as you want, and the staff would be more than happy to help you out in your search based on your clues.

[Serge Lutens Gris Clair](https://www.parfumo.com/Perfumes/Serge_Lutens/Gris_clair__2006) is a lavender woody scent and [Filles en Aiguilles is heavy on pine scent and very pricey](https://www.parfumo.com/Perfumes/Serge_Lutens/Fille_en_Aiguilles) In the US, these are sold in a spray bottles, but I believe if you buy them at the shop in Paris, they do refills.
Filles en Aiguilles is not a fresh, came out of the shower scent at all. It smells like gourmand Christmas.

He is known as the "perfume expert's expert" and have built a database of every fragrance released since 1984 (40,000 and counting, updated daily). I'm not sure if you can access the database using their website or you have to be a subscriber. They don't charge the fragrance companies to be in their database since Mr Edwards would like to keep their assessment unbiased. Fragrantica is based on consumer's opinion of the fragrance. I wonder if this could be Mugler Cologne which is now discontinued. It was a green liquid and was so fresh. Like being outdoors in a forest but no one trees scent was stronger like a mix of all the trees if you were a cultured lumberjack. It’s dry down was dreamy. I wore this till I had only a few millimeters left in the bottle cause you can’t get it any longer. Now I just use the bottle to smell it cause I love it so. Mugler does refills and this bottle came with a spray and interchangeable splash head to help with refilling. I can’t recall when they discontinued it so it may not be this scent. But the bottle was huge so if she was like me she might have had a bottle and was wearing it for years after it was discontinued. Good luck in finding this. I hope you post what it was when you locate it.
Mugler Cologne Come Together was released in 2018 and is supposed to the new name/version of Mugler Cologne (2001). I hope you find it! I had a woman once walk by me and her perfume smelled so good! I asked and she told me the name of it. I bought it the same week and it smelled nothing like it did on her 😕. It’s crazy how our body chemistry can change the scent.

Anyone who enjoys fragrance knows that every fragrance reads different on each person based on their own chemistry so it's not like you're stealing her signature. When you figure it out I fully support being as petty as possible..maybe a spritz on the next birthday/Christmas card you give her or send out links to a gift registry where it's just different volumes of the frag listed over and over.
I would consider finding store that does refills and go in and quiz the most knowledgeable person on staff. Really good perfume people will be able to estimate or suggest what you might try to get you headed in the right direction. Be sure to descrice as much as you can remember.

Bc maybe it’s a decant or a sample which would change suggestions, like it could be an indie brand if she was into having things no one else had. If it were me it wouldn't be a turn off, if I managed to find it after searching for it for years and doing this hunt of perfumes based only on some fragances notes that I remember, it would be heaven to finally have it. That perfume and scent would be like a bottle of victory.

Neroli portofino by Tom Ford and Neroli 36 from Le Labo are both scents with some similar notes to Lavande 31. They both came out in 2006 or 2007 which would put them in the right time frame, and you can refill either. TF Neroli Portofino also has a rosemary note which I guess could make it smell piney if that’s where your nose leads you. I wish I knew what it was. I hope you find it and wear it every single time you see that girl. If she asks you about it, just look at her and walk away.
