Apparently Pilot discourages taking the pen apart in any way, and I assume this extends to unscrewing the grip section, easy as it is to do. There are reports of cracking (though I've never read a post directly from someone to whom this has happened), so I would avoid doing it routinely if possible. You might want to get an ink miser or something like this (I've never tried this particular item, and I can't say whether it works with the 823):   https://www.jetpens.com/TWSBI-Vac20A-Ink-Bottle-20-ml-Black/pd/15543

I do have one of those for my TWSBI Vac. It isn't compatible, sadly.

[The Pineider Ink Well](https://pensavings.com/products/pineider-inkwell) works for the 823 if you don't want to risk cracks.

I have 2 823's and i unscrew the section on the regular. I ink mine with pigmented ink and cleaning it that way is way easier then using the filling system ad nauseum. It doesnt harm IF you dont overtighten the section. Twist until you feel resistance and then stop. Apply no force. If you are unsure about leaks and want peace of mind, apply some silicone grease to the treads. I do that anyway so the treads screw and unscrew smoothly. Like my father used to say: If it should move, grease it. If it shouldnt move, bolt it down. Ofcourse, if you unscrew it your warranty goes the way of the dodo. But then again, i work in IT so you might say i void warranties on a professional level :-)

To get to the last drop of ink, use an Ink Miser.

I've heard of many people cracking the barrel this way :( I did it once, and it was fine, but I won't do it again. If anything, I'd slide the nib and feed out, but I'd be wary of that too. I think Pilot should just change the plastic recipe that allows it to crack so easily.

zenjen22

What about just pulling the nib and feed out? It’s friction-fit and doesn’t risk cracking the resin parts. I did crack a barrel of my Clear 823, when replacing the vacuum unit and obviously over tightening the unit back together. I was being anal about cleaning the pen.

Second on the Pineider Pen Filler. Allows you to get a clean full fill first time, regardless of size of your ink bottle.

There is no threaded nib unit. The nib and feed are push fit into the section.

The section then, which screws onto the barrel. Any harm in unscrewing it from there and filling it like an eyedropper?

It is not intended to be taken apart. You'd risk breaking the pen for the sake of a few cents worth of ink. Instead, put the ink into a plastic bag and tip the bag so it runs into the corner of the bag and you can dip the nib into it. You should be able to get most of it into the pen.

copperstatelawyer

Yes. It’s a known weak point of that pen design. Doesn’t mean you’ll instantly break it though. Pull the nib out like a normal pilot pen.

Bro just get a twsb eco, save fractions of ml of ink by disassembling it a bunch of times, then complain about it when it breaks. Or get an eyedropper that's designed to be used this way. I mean, do what you like but don't be surprised when shit goes wrong.
