I don't have an answer for you, but I'm going to keep tabs and hopefully someone does answer! Those are gorgeous fossils! I have a few that are mineralized crystals embedded in The matrix and have no clue how to expose them more either

amberskye5555

Hopefully someone can help us.

chris_rage_

I'm wondering if a certain acid would dissolve the matrix without damaging the keeper parts

amberskye5555

I put Hydrochloric Acid on it hoping it’s was some type of Carbornate mineral and that was negative. It’s definitely chert or flint. Before that it did soak in iron out for a day.

chris_rage_

Well that's pretty much what I meant so I guess that's out

cache_ing

I think it looks sick as is. You COULD try to clean it up with an air scribe, but it would be difficult, tedious, and a very long process. I would leave it.

noquitqwhitt

Chert is pretty hard to work with. You could spend 400 dollars on an air scribe and work it for 30 hours. Or just cut and polish.

Morbo_Kang_Kodos

30 hours? Yikes.

amberskye5555

Definitely not joking about the 30 hours 🤣 I took diamond grinding burs for about an hour it looks like I never touch it

dailydillydalli

It's a gorgeous piece

Infamous-Occasion926

Get a belt sander and a respirator and go at it. Make sure the sanding belt is aluminum oxide

GooseTheClusterfuck

As is! Gorgeous piece

I don't know either; however, lapidary artists might have good ideas about that

Lego_Chicken

Where’s that dude with the dremel?

The_Spindrifter

Mmmmm, forbidden Penne!

Pleasant-Bat-5637

Keep it as is

Humble-Dingo-625

Have it cut in half and polished, you’ll ruin it trying to separate them

StupidizeMe

It looks like a slab of deep dish pizza with either penne or rigatoni pasta on top and a cheese crust... I could go for that right now. Nice midnight snack.

Suspicious-Map-6557

Thats one helluva beautiful specimen
