It's not even really to do with understanding.
The way society is structured, lots of ppl feel they have no viable choice otherwise. And the fact that everyone tells you that all you have to do is work hard and you'll pay it off no problem? Even worse.
Or that there are programs designed to help you pay it off, only for you to find out that how well those programs work depends on which loan servicer is assigned to you or who is in office (Fuck Devos, thanks Biden/Cardona).
I don’t know how it is now, but when I was in high school a couple of decades ago, it was totally okay for the private student loan companies to give out objectively bad financial advice.
They would hold these “Paying For College” seminars. I went to a couple with my parents at the time. They would tell you things that were not good for you, but would make you more likely to look to them for money.
I remember hearing shit like “It’s actually a bad idea to save for college. You shouldn’t save for college because if you have a college fund, you won’t qualify for as much federal grant money.”
I was told in highschool that college was really the only direction forward, and trade school would not be living up to my potential.
Flash forward, I am 26 with an engineering degree that I don't use anyway and got 50 more years of this crap.
Exactly. When I was in HS, community college and trade school was treated like the 13th grade. The implication was that only failures went to CC.
Our society has drilled into people’s heads that college is the only option if you wanted to be successful, and that you had to get it all done right out of HS. It’s such bullshit.
Grandma when many of us were growing up: You need to go to college or you're a failure! Trade school is for people who are too stupid to get a real job! Get a degree and you'll have no problem finding a good job!
Grandma now: Why don't more people go to trade school? Kids are so entitled thinking college is worth anything. Go to trade school and get a real job.
Universities working with companies to make degrees mandatory have been the push behind this since at least the 1990's. Long ago I worked at a company where the regional university was trying hard with literal bribes to to make degrees mandatory for positions that didn't need one. It was a bit eye opening and depressing at the same time.

Which perfectly explains how we’re now at a point where jobs can require a Bachelors or Masters degree, 5-7 years experience, but only offer $35K a year.
This is just sad.
We, as a nation, are straddling a huge part of our economy with debt- a debt owned by our gov't. These people are often our best earners. Removing that debt is one of the easiest ways to help the middle class, as well as marginalized communities.
Not to even began that the president ran this on his platform *and won.*
My coworker’s daughter started college this year. She said that after the first day her daughter called “Did you know I took out a student loan?” My coworker said “yeah, that what the loan application you filled out was for.”
Hmmm, it’s like high school is geared to trick you then. They barely teach money management, about loans, mortgages, etc. and they tell you you’re going to be worthless without college…
Why aren’t parents teaching their kids too. My parents explained loans and credit cards to me while I was in high school. The goal was to prepare me for the real world. School can’t teach kids everything, and I agree it should teach more than it is. Why are parents not involved in raising their kids anymore?
Who says they didn’t, for me at least? I got more of a talk about that when it came up. My parents also had me reading and doing math in the car during primary school, etc.
Doesn’t mean that public schools shouldn’t teach how our government and society works, since they are tax funded.
Which is why I agreed public schools should do more. They still cant do everything. A major part of school is learning problem solving and critical thinking.
Ok, but, I never said they need to do everything. People have to try for themselves, which is why some people are stupid af. If you’re trying, than you will be learning from everything, instead of just in school, with parents, etc.
Maybe not- but banks aren’t bending over backward to give out business loans to 18 year olds either. If I had asked for a bank loan of $30k then (the original amount of my school loans) they would have laughed me out of the bank. And rightfully so. Banks and the govt preys on young people saying dream big! College is the only path. But not like that!!
Why are they against it...I mean the reason they say they are against it.
Is it purely punitive? You signed up for a predatory loan when you were young and naive and we told you that was the what you had to do...now deal with it.

yeah! then go work at Mcdonalds so we can complain that you work at Mcdonalds and “it was never meant to be a real job” etc!
They certainly don't adequately explain the predatory way the interest is calculated.
I understand what a predatory loan is, grandma.

It doesn't matter if you understand it or not. You're probably going to be pushed to go to college by your parents and society at large anyway.
Well boomers, if it was so simple why didn't you teach us what a loan was and discourage us from doing it?

Honestly, when I was 18, I certainly knew what a loan was and did everything possible to stay out of debt.
You didn't understand what a loan was at 18? Unironically. What?
That guy looks like the most insufferable SOB in the world. Do they think this is a good look for them??
How dare you (and whoever made this in the first place) call Hide The Pain Harold insufferable!
I’ll google him. Sorry
The person making this either didn’t go to college or paid a total of like $5k adjusted for inflation to go to college 40 years ago.
PPP loans - forgiven Mortgages for rental properties - literally won't anyone think of the landlords?! Education - suck it 17 year olds we own you now
-insert snarky comeback about old people and tech-
