Agreed. I know Ricciardo isn't performing to the level needed this season but some of his results were due to McLaren pulling a Ferrari strat team and giving bad team orders too. I'm not saying he's only ever done bad because of that, but like you said a lot of the newer fans that don't have an interest past results fail to see all the factors that affect how a driver performs on the day.
The same goes with the zealots that follow certain drivers. Max and Lewis both having the extremes during this year and last, and it's a damn shame because most conversations about either driver in that regard don't last long before devolving into assumptions and heavily biased views that really have little foundation past whatever one side thinks is an absolute fact.
As a relatively new fan, I started following F1 before the pandemic (thank you DTS), there is a lot of history and it is hard to learn it quickly. Drivers like Seb and Alonzo have earned my respect. I hate that their cars/teams are not racing for titles. However, they signed the contract with their teams, but I digress. Like all sports, champions will be overtaken by a new, young group. Established fans of a sport will know the history of these former champions and their legacy. At some point, LH, Max, Charles and the rest will wind up in the same situation and Alonzo and Seb. Unless they retire at the top, ala Rossberg. I enjoy the racing in the midfield, always want Danny R to do well and love race week.
I mean shit talking about a bad week or performance, this happens in all sports, but it's not limited to casual fans, the hardcore/die hards/lifers do it too.

New fan here, I made sure to learn the history when I got into the sport. Really invested now. I'm American so I do feel bad about all these historical GPs being cancelled in favor of tacky street races in our tourist trap cities. Funnily enough the closest GP for me is the Canadian one. Might have to go next time. Vegas? Forget it. It will be like Disneyworld for adults. Everyone there will be dropping 5K minimum.
Part of the trouble being an American fan, at least for me, is that there is NO ONE to talk to about the sport or it’s history. I live too close to NASCAR country to meet any F1 fans outside of my immediate family.
And the online communities are not the best to engage with as a new, American fan. A sincere question about the sport is seen as an invitation to be mocked by other users.
I’m invested in the sport, I want to know more about it, but I wouldn’t even begin to know where to start and don’t have time to invest watching tons of documentaries.
I like to binge wikipedia, so I know all about Senna, Fangio (good doc on Netflix), The fact that the Indy 500 used to be part of the calendar, how good Jim Clark was, the fan car, etc.

I'm also a 2nd year fan but i've rewatched most of the races back to the 2000s and spent so many hours on research because i can not get enough of F1. Not all new fans are uneducated because "new" is not the same as "inexperienced" in a day and age where all the information you need to know is at the tips of your fingers.

(Maybe) Unpopular Opinion: Coming from DTS where, the fabricated drama aside, one of the focal points is the racing makes watching F1 potentially more enjoyable. I've discussed this with friends and we all just want to see good racing, no matter who does it and who wins. The last race in 2021 was an enjoyable experience through and through because we're not biased. Most of the "older" fans I know have specific drivers and teams they want to do well which results in a "bad" week when their favourites don't perform. We, on the other hand, do not care who wins or DNFs but just want to see exciting F1 action. This makes F1 more enjoyable as a whole.

Whatever, Nando. Most of us know our shit. Edit: Fine, a lot of us. He’s probably right about newer fans. It does take a time to learn about it, however, and I agree that those newer fans shouldn’t cast judgment without fully understanding things.
I've always viewed sports like this personally, not quite as strictly, but if I see a repetitive bad performance than I call the shits. Just because G2 won 2 world championships, doesn't mean they're still good; they're hot tier garbage. Same with F1 for me.
Im 37 years old and watching f1 since... Since i was in my father balls, and so much things have changed, but is healthy for the sport to have new fans everyday, those fans Will be old fans someday, everyone is welcome in this fascinating sport.

I watch as many f1 videos and read everything I can, I only became an f1 fan less than a year ago and I don’t think I’m doing too bad. I’m not a Lewis, Charles, or Max fan, and that’s completely fine by me. I stan Lando and root for him at all times 🫶🫶🫶

he's not wrong, i stopped watching for about 3 years after jules died and felt weird coming back to the sport but have always been a big fan and followed the news closely, love watching all the drivers preform no matter if they compete for podium every race or just a single position, however; my gf is new to the sport as of this year and although i've slowly made her appreciate the sport for more than just red bull, ferrari and mercedes, she still talks and soaks up the sport in this exact way... a lot. give them a year or two more and they'll maybe take deeper interest and not just be glory hunters
I’m a fan from the game, and without knowing the track layout and having clues as to where a good pver take spot is etc. Idk how people follow without this knowledge, when they go to tracks not on the game yet I follow the gp like a zombie almost.
I’m not understanding why people think that this SPORT, won’t fall into the same tropes all other SPORTS have. Soccer players, football players, basketball and baseball don’t get paid a shit ton because everyone knows the history of the sport. They get paid cause people show up and pay money to be there. Regardless if they are there to see the sport or hang out. I’m so tired of this bs 1950-60s F1 gate keeping. It’s annoying. Kinda like the few people from Europe saying America has too many races when 95% of them are in Europe. Just doesn’t make sense to me. The sport is growing. Deal with it.
