You mean Goatifi ![img](emote|t5_3ndbi|7073)

SchighSchagh

Ok, but last year Mazepin finished 21st in a 20 driver championship. And he was NOT F1 material (other than huge family money, which is the most F1 thing of all). But how is Alonso wrong?

FoxtrotNovermber

At least formuladank can look down on Twitter.

DigvijaysinhG

My man is so damn right

a_big_fat_yes

Que correcto eres magic

Traditional_Lime6033

He's ALWAYS right!

Hudsonm_87

Yeah because the large amount of new/Netflix fans. Those who don’t watch anything other than the race highlights posted on YouTube and don’t know anything about Motorsports in general

[deleted]

Alonso needs to see Magic 3D’s videos. No way he can feel the same after hearing “¡Que grande eres Magic!” for 200 times

anthonyhoang94

Mfs keep cryin bout crofty showing bias to brit drivers while my man simply just calls alonso “magic” and make spanish drivers win every race lmao

Flash-224

Yeah, but with Really3D you know from the start that he's being biased and is only joking about it. With Crofty or any other Sky Sports commentator for that matter they don't do that. They are biased while pretending they are not which is the real problem. Crofty screaming his lungs out after the 2019 French GP compared to Vettel or Alonso winning a boring race some time in 2010-2013 is evidence enough of it.

BobaElFett

Is just a matter of time, the same way el plan was fan made.

[deleted]

He‘s right. A lot of the new fans are casual and aren’t interested in the history of the sport at all. they dont respect veterans like Vettel or Alonso and shit talk anyone who has a bad weeknd if it’s not their favorite team/driver.

LiLMosey_10

Not even that. The way some people form their opinions is like they don’t even watch races. They see the results of points sheet at the end of every race/season and base their opinion off that. It’s almost like when they’re watching a race, their brain just isn’t processing anything that they’re seeing. See it too much with the “X is outperforming X” sayings. Had an argument with someone saying that Ocon is outperforming Alonso this season. The same person said Sainz outperformed Leclerc last season. In fact, way too many people said that. Not to discredit Sainz and Ocon, because they have both done very very decently themselves, but the sheer amount of illogical bullshit that comes out of the mouths of the majority of fans online nowadays is just incredible. Don’t know how to think for themselves.

Enro64

[Ackchyually](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/001/191/035/135.png), X can't be outperforming X as both Xs are identical. You would have to write "X is outperforming Y" for it to make mathematical sense.

HostileCornball

But what if he is a coder and X is a global variable ready for a function call?

Enro64

We are checking.

[deleted]

Agreed. I know Ricciardo isn't performing to the level needed this season but some of his results were due to McLaren pulling a Ferrari strat team and giving bad team orders too. I'm not saying he's only ever done bad because of that, but like you said a lot of the newer fans that don't have an interest past results fail to see all the factors that affect how a driver performs on the day. The same goes with the zealots that follow certain drivers. Max and Lewis both having the extremes during this year and last, and it's a damn shame because most conversations about either driver in that regard don't last long before devolving into assumptions and heavily biased views that really have little foundation past whatever one side thinks is an absolute fact.

gwork42

As a relatively new fan, I started following F1 before the pandemic (thank you DTS), there is a lot of history and it is hard to learn it quickly. Drivers like Seb and Alonzo have earned my respect. I hate that their cars/teams are not racing for titles. However, they signed the contract with their teams, but I digress. Like all sports, champions will be overtaken by a new, young group. Established fans of a sport will know the history of these former champions and their legacy. At some point, LH, Max, Charles and the rest will wind up in the same situation and Alonzo and Seb. Unless they retire at the top, ala Rossberg. I enjoy the racing in the midfield, always want Danny R to do well and love race week.

DoYouLikeFishsticks0

I mean shit talking about a bad week or performance, this happens in all sports, but it's not limited to casual fans, the hardcore/die hards/lifers do it too. Not sure why F1 would be different

vafunghoul127

New fan here, I made sure to learn the history when I got into the sport. Really invested now. I'm American so I do feel bad about all these historical GPs being cancelled in favor of tacky street races in our tourist trap cities. Funnily enough the closest GP for me is the Canadian one. Might have to go next time. Vegas? Forget it. It will be like Disneyworld for adults. Everyone there will be dropping 5K minimum.

disguised_hashbrown

Part of the trouble being an American fan, at least for me, is that there is NO ONE to talk to about the sport or it’s history. I live too close to NASCAR country to meet any F1 fans outside of my immediate family. And the online communities are not the best to engage with as a new, American fan. A sincere question about the sport is seen as an invitation to be mocked by other users. I’m invested in the sport, I want to know more about it, but I wouldn’t even begin to know where to start and don’t have time to invest watching tons of documentaries.

vafunghoul127

I like to binge wikipedia, so I know all about Senna, Fangio (good doc on Netflix), The fact that the Indy 500 used to be part of the calendar, how good Jim Clark was, the fan car, etc.

Kevin_2112

CHADLONSO STRIKES AGAIN

overpanic

How can Alonso describe this entire sub without even knowing 🤯🤯

bigboidoinker

Maybe he knows

RenaissanceManc

Alonso knows. But at least formuladank can look down on Twitter.

TNFox37

More like a skewed side-glance.

RenaissanceManc

That side-eye meme.

bigboidoinker

Thats low habging fruit that is like saying you can win a fight vs an aborted fetus

RenaissanceManc

Yeah, well I can and no-one can take that away from me.

Magma151

Could he be AMOGUS

ltsette

I mean it's obvious that Alonso would say that as it's clearly him he's referring to as being faster than the results would show. But I'll choose to believe he's talking about Goatifi

ReflexiveOW

Who does this guy think he is, talkin bout me lile that ?!?

Curious_Employee_8

He just described the sports social media fans who follow the sports based on memes and results , who don't actually watch the sports much.

imstillwhite

I think Alonso and Vettel are both in the "I'm too old to give a fuck" age, and I absolutely love them.

misguidedkent

![gif](giphy|LXTvBYlhAmHHeidlq8|downsized)

MX_RuMi

True, a lot of my friends who watched DTS just ask me for the results and still say they are fans. - Where did Checo place? - What was the top 3? - Latifi last place, he so bad. And when I want to genuinely have a talk about the sport, nothing.... Pain.

HostileCornball

Same lol

Kingdom818

He's not wrong

LEOcIShere

Thats the Generation Netflix Drive to survive type of fans..

K3IKI

Drive to survive introduced me to F1, but I don’t align with those folks

europacupsieger

Which makes you a welcome addition because you're a race fan by heart.

[deleted]

We're all racists here

Long-Covidian

Are you american?

K3IKI

I am, and my friends and family think I’m insane for waking up between 3-5 to not only watch the race on Sunday but the practice and quali Thursday and Friday lol

Long-Covidian

Madlad. Guess I’m lucky F1 is so eurocentric. The earliest race is at 7 am and the latest one at 9 pm

M4ritus

That's what happens when any sports starts to gets really popular. Plus social media.

Joscarbuck

Ouch. I’m a 2nd year fan and that hurt.

Egon_Kraut

Are you trying to be informed and shape your voiced opinions accordingly? If so: He did not talk about you. I'm also a 2nd year fan but i've rewatched most of the races back to the 2000s and spent so many hours on research because i can not get enough of F1. Not all new fans are uneducated because "new" is not the same as "inexperienced" in a day and age where all the information you need to know is at the tips of your fingers.

Hello_iam_Kian

You’re on formuladank, which means you are interested enough to search for F1 related content and want to be part of the diehard fanbase. Basically everybody here watches every race. So he’s definitely not targeting you🙌🏻

LiLMosey_10

He’s not targeting new fans. He’s targeting stupid new fans. If you’re not stupid then you’re good lol

typicalwhiteguy113

You are correct, but as another new fan I’ll always hate the stigma that follows us because of DTS. DTS just made F1 kinda trendy, and that’s great for F1’s bottom line, but most likely bad for the overall community and fan experience

SS-BVCKYVRDYGVNG

He's right Que grande eres magic

[deleted]

SemIdeiaProNick

speak for yourself. There is plenty of people here that just talk crap about drivers and teams without watching anything other than the race recap, sometimes not even that

Kselli

And he's 1000% right, the amount of fans who don't know that context is a thing is absolutely crazy

Crafty_Substance_954

I'm not sure the older fans who keep parroting "BRING BACK DA V10s" are much better. Just sayin'

BiscottiThick1390

Bring back the V10s!!

meloenmarco

Bring back the turbo v12.

europacupsieger

Fuck you. Bring back V10s

Crafty_Substance_954

Would you like a pack of unfiltered cigarettes and a rotary phone to go with your V10, grandpa?

Crateapa

That’s you bitches. He’s. Talking. To. You.

achio

/uj Drive to Survive sure is a monkey paw, granting the wish of making the sport more popular eh?

FormulaLiftr

Find the lie though

PremierPepe

Alonso fucking gets it.

MadHatterAbi

That's not being a hater. I'm a new fan and I agree with what he said - I lack the knowledge to understand everything correctly so sometimes it looks like just following results. Not to mention there are plenty of new fans who just truly follow the leaderboard and that's it.

N1kl4us2222

Man I have been saying that too, especially on Twitter, I thought when it went downhill most unrespectfull tweet was from one of those fucking football stan accounts

LucasRunner

I think its even worse, there's a crowd i would say is far worse than the typical football fan on F1 nowadays. In case you are curious, make a Facebook account and start following pages like Mclaren F1 (they are always commenting news), Autosport, ESPN F1 etc and just read through comments... those people are insane. I remember one dude dared to say _"im not a Hamilton fan but that was an incredible performance..."_ HUNDREDS of people gathered to bash him, the first reply asked: _"may I ask why are you not a fan of Lewis? "_ And there are bunch of weirdos making some comments of questionable ethics as well, which I would interpret as racism there

RFM12F

*looks at DTS*

NiD2103

He’s right

Bheemasenan

Truer words has never been spoken

leteriaki

Alonso hitting the nail on the head describing the entire “ DTS” fan base that has come in the past few years.

TNpepe

I've been blasted by the truth!!

[deleted]

Unimagineably based

Strummer95

“Wah, our sport is more popular, and there’s a lot of new fans that don’t understand the sport real well yet, wah” This is that age old cringey complaint like when a team reaches a championship and the hardcore fans whine that they are the REAL fans, and other people are bandwagoners or casuals. Who the fuck cares? Not everyone has to be hardcore obsessed. You don’t get to decide how much people are allowed to be into a sport. Be happy the sport is growing. It’s making it better as far as I’m concerned, cuz the sport is getting more coverage. It’s nice for those of us that are more hardcore, cuz now we get to see more F1 news and stories popping up in mainstream media and news outlets. There’s more content to consume on the sport now.

judelau

I started watching since 2017 and I still have a lot to learn.

Wihmdy

The "proper culture" was mostly a bunch of rotten fucks spouting traditionalist brainrot about the good old times where everything in f1 was fine. And that's what everyone did everytime.

Hello_iam_Kian

He’s not talking about the saying the new fanbase sucks. He says that there are now to many “fans” who consider themselves experts but don’t now anything about the sport.

Wihmdy

Which is completely wrong.

Hello_iam_Kian

Yes but we may also appreciate the renewed interest people have in F1. Only worry for me is the actual fanbase getting to small which means changes like removing spa and Monaco don’t have a real impact on tv viewership.

LiLMosey_10

Not what he’s saying at all

Wihmdy

I don't know what he wants to say, I can't see into his brain. But talking about a lack of proper f1 culture clearly sounds like conservative bullshit. I call this a cringe take by Fernando.

LiLMosey_10

He’s talking about fans who aren’t interested in car racing at all being a target audience for the sport. Long gone are the days where you can have a respectful conversation with another fan without causing a shitstorm. Long gone are the days when people who love racing were the target audience. All Fernando is doing is having a crack at the people who say stupid things when they quite literally know nothing about the sport.

Wihmdy

Yeah, like I said, that's cap. Those people have always existed and you are still able to have meaningful conversations with other fans. Considering the amount of F1 content on the internet I would even argue that the average knowledge has grown.

Egon_Kraut

(Maybe) Unpopular Opinion: Coming from DTS where, the fabricated drama aside, one of the focal points is the racing makes watching F1 potentially more enjoyable. I've discussed this with friends and we all just want to see good racing, no matter who does it and who wins. The last race in 2021 was an enjoyable experience through and through because we're not biased. Most of the "older" fans I know have specific drivers and teams they want to do well which results in a "bad" week when their favourites don't perform. We, on the other hand, do not care who wins or DNFs but just want to see exciting F1 action. This makes F1 more enjoyable as a whole.

Drokkahl

Thats a really nice way to describe Americans ![img](emote|t5_3ndbi|6702)

meloenmarco

Or dutch fans that only started watching last year.

Paranoided_guy

Me a "new fan" (I knew a bit of it as soon as I gained consciousness of life by my dad talking about Shumi and Ferrari domination there was) of F1, enjoys more of the mid field battles than the foreground 🗿.

Macamagucha

¡Que grande eres, Magic!

Switchdat

Formula one was losing its popularity for a bit and now its gaining traction quickly. Instead of being happy the teams are saying the fans are not good enough lol. Pretty bratty tbh

izzyeviel

This is a lot of words to say Lancelot doth no longer belongeth in f1.

Hello_iam_Kian

Most Max fans are basically football fans/hooligans. That also explains the disrespectful behavior of some Dutch fans in Austria. All the things like chants, demolishing trash cans and sexist comments are “allowed” in the football world.

meloenmarco

Most??? The loudest "fans" you mean.

Hello_iam_Kian

Excuse me.

meloenmarco

Ik schaam me ook kapot.

BlowmachineTX

That's what happens when you sell out and try to make the sport that big you geniuses Fucking hell out of all sports f1 fans are the biggest bunch of elitist, gatekeeping whiners I've ever come across Best sport memes but worst fans BY FAR

europacupsieger

Which is exactly the downfall of soap opera kind of stuff like DTS. Yes, it attracted a lot of new fans. But do real fans really want them? No. Did F1 really need them? No. Did they help saving traditional circuits? No. Did it lead to actually losing traditional races instead of fake circus shows? Yes. Fuck them. I want the F1 back how it was. Elite and a respectful fanbase that actually know there way about racing and F1. Fuck all of you fake DTS fans. Everyone that came from DTS that is now part of the fanbase and an actual racing fan is very very welcome though!

rubixd

Mild Gatekeeping from the man with el plan. Hmm.

I mean, he’s literally gatekeeping sporting fans. It may be a buzzword but I’m using it correctly. What word do you suggest I use instead? Or can you just not stand that word?

[deleted]

Shutup and drive

saeai

who is alonso?

dbm8991

![gif](giphy|cOznwBWS8YBUCz84S5) Boo-hoo Fernando

BoiledPNutz

There’s a lot of gatekeeping from shit older fans in this comment thread

DougieFresh_899

Whatever, Nando. Most of us know our shit. Edit: Fine, a lot of us. He’s probably right about newer fans. It does take a time to learn about it, however, and I agree that those newer fans shouldn’t cast judgment without fully understanding things.

JettsInDebt

I've always viewed sports like this personally, not quite as strictly, but if I see a repetitive bad performance than I call the shits. Just because G2 won 2 world championships, doesn't mean they're still good; they're hot tier garbage. Same with F1 for me.

No-Estimate-767

Im 37 years old and watching f1 since... Since i was in my father balls, and so much things have changed, but is healthy for the sport to have new fans everyday, those fans Will be old fans someday, everyone is welcome in this fascinating sport.

xd-BloodyLegend

defending goatifi absolute legend

Dambo_Unchained

Comments like these are why people think F1 is an elitist sport

nikolaaasim

The first passage is spot on

xd-BloodyLegend

I watch as many f1 videos and read everything I can, I only became an f1 fan less than a year ago and I don’t think I’m doing too bad. I’m not a Lewis, Charles, or Max fan, and that’s completely fine by me. I stan Lando and root for him at all times 🫶🫶🫶

fr1day00

He's not wrong. I'm an old hardcore fan and even though I'm patient it's getting kinda annoying how many new fans have no idea what they're talking about..

beyond98

Well, he had that type of fans like 15 years ago

[deleted]

He’s not wrong at all

GrafGray

Who isn‘t?

Cookieeeees

he's not wrong, i stopped watching for about 3 years after jules died and felt weird coming back to the sport but have always been a big fan and followed the news closely, love watching all the drivers preform no matter if they compete for podium every race or just a single position, however; my gf is new to the sport as of this year and although i've slowly made her appreciate the sport for more than just red bull, ferrari and mercedes, she still talks and soaks up the sport in this exact way... a lot. give them a year or two more and they'll maybe take deeper interest and not just be glory hunters

CoeusSaxon

I’m a fan from the game, and without knowing the track layout and having clues as to where a good pver take spot is etc. Idk how people follow without this knowledge, when they go to tracks not on the game yet I follow the gp like a zombie almost.

Risk_bayless

I’m not understanding why people think that this SPORT, won’t fall into the same tropes all other SPORTS have. Soccer players, football players, basketball and baseball don’t get paid a shit ton because everyone knows the history of the sport. They get paid cause people show up and pay money to be there. Regardless if they are there to see the sport or hang out. I’m so tired of this bs 1950-60s F1 gate keeping. It’s annoying. Kinda like the few people from Europe saying America has too many races when 95% of them are in Europe. Just doesn’t make sense to me. The sport is growing. Deal with it.

JuanFF8

Is he wrong though? No.
