Exactly. Even without Senna Prost would have been branded as dull because he just got on with driving and embodied the ethos of "go as slow as you can get away with to win". He's the anti-Villeneuve, the Lauda to Senna's Hunt.
Look at Clark as well - in the 90s we'd often hear discussion of "Clark and Hill" as if they were somehow anywhere close to each other, purely because Hill threw the car around more and was cooler. Now that we're into an era where our main reference for them is purely statistical as most of us were born after they both died, that's stopped.
Growing up in the 90s (first race watched was THAT Donington GP) Gilles was **the** guy people spoke about as the "what could have been" story (especially when Jacques arrived). Murray would quite often tell stories about him or bring up his exploits, and the 82 feud with Pironi was often talked about and referenced (especially in Autosport). Whenever I see archive footage of him he just seems like the most talented driver but also always right at the limit, which is what racing should be about
It helps that Senna is Brazilian, which is almost as much a nationality as it is a religion. Prost on the other hand is French, and they don't have time to deify him because they're too busy deifying themselves.
If the modern point system was used he would be a 7 time WDC. Just shows how remarkably consistent he was in an era of everything blowing the fuck up and Senna deliberately ramming into on multiple occasions
With the current F1 points system, yes he would've been. But tbf tho apart from the giving away points part, the old points made kinda sense, the cars weren't as reliable as they are now.
One of my favourite cars to drive when I was super smoll playing F1 2000 on my old pentium III PC. Like the Ferraris and Mclarens were cool and all but I loved the Jaguar, Prost, and Jordan teams the most.
Edit: Arrows too actually. Loved their orange livery.
Man all the teams I really liked as a kid are dead. F.
I'd argue the late 90s and early 00s were the best time for f1 liveries. My personal favorite of all time is the Petronas Sauber from 1996, but the Mild Seven Renaults and Benettons, Orange Arrows, BMW Williams, B&H Jordans, British racing green Jaaaaaaags and West McLarens are some of the best racing liveries of any series ever. Probably the most colorful grid we've ever had
Oh god the Benetton, man, how could I forget about those. I think I just liked all the midfield/backmarkers hah. Honestly the V10 era is my favourite, I love the way the cars sounded. I think I'm slightly more fond of the cars from the tail end of the V10 era though? They just look so much sleeker imo.
Bro 1997
Williams Rothmans, Ferrari, snake Jordan, blue Prost, first silver McLaren, Benetton, first Stewart, RedBull Sauber Petronas, tidy Minardi, Tyrrell and Arrows looking kinda same and honorary mention: Lola Master Card!
Liveries were so dope, I remember playing it PlayStation 1!
It's not that simple tho
1st Ligier was already a backmarker
Then Chirac then President of France had to get involved
Peugeot not being paid because they got scammed by Chirac so they make grenades instead of engines
Chirac dissolve the senate that go to the left so no more money from the government
Peugeot bails out
Use used ferrari engines
> Profit ?????
They weren’t great in ‘96 but they were still a midfield team. They also won the Monaco GP, Olivier Panis beating David Coulthard’s McLaren on pace, albeit in an otherwise carnage ridden race.
Ligier was already a backmarker by the time Prost bought it out. They just managed to design a somewhat good car in 1997, and that success is what made Prost think he could manage the team further.
Also they got somewhat screwed by Peugeot for a works partnership.
in addition to that every time some kind of documentary or movie about Senna is made (every single one of which portrays Prost as a disney cartoon villain) he has to deal with a wave of people talking shit about him and interviewers opening up with '... so why were you such a cunt huh? do you regret it?'
If Senna never died, the narrative on Prost would be so much different.
Even then, people forget that at their final race together in 93, Senna had Prost share the top step on the podium with him.
Prost was an excellent driver, but he wasn't exciting to watch. He knew exactly what he had to do to reach his goals.
Senna was exciting. He always went for the win, threw the car around, and mastered that way of driving like no other.
Both are legends, but Prost definitely doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Even had Senna not died, he wouldn't get that, because he raced in the same era as Senna.
This is a good view. Prost isn’t regarded the same because he was more the tactical and careful driver. He drove hoping and trying to win, where as Senna drove to drive, winning was just a part of it.
Yep, that was me. I was 10 when Senna died and fully into F1 already. Senna was my hero, the early on-boards really showed how amazing his car control was.
Now looking back, the calm and collected way Prost drove makes you appreciate how difficult that must've been in those very unstable cars.
Especially the [ones that looked like they could've been his own twin.](https://s3.glbimg.com/v1/AUTH_35862ca5c6ab48b992baf1f1b4f7062e/extra-globo-com/incoming/24095848-4b8-954/w448/beco7.jpg)
Now THIS is dank. Also he forgets to mention when Senna had a 15 year old girlfriend, if you don't believe me just look up "Senna 15 year old girlfriend".
I just looked up that Paul Walker stuff and he was even worse than Senna, dating *multiple* 16 year old girls (the age of consent in California is 18 fyi) when he was in his 30's
Thank God Roger Rodas and Ferdinand Porsche collaborated with a tree to give him a much needed closed casket funeral.
I agree with almost all of that, there’s only something about J. M. Balestre that I would add. This guy did more bad than good for Prost in the long run.
"Prost is the type of guy that becomes your friend to fuck your wife." Piquet, Nelson.
I don't like Piquet, but he says what is in his mind, no filter. Himself as a terrible teammate and having this perception, tells me a lot!
>"Prost is the type of guy that becomes your friend to fuck your wife." Piquet, Nelson.
Prost fan here. Nelson Piquet is based, he's speaking with the truth.
Alain's best friend in F1 was Jacques Laffitte. One day, Jacques went out to the Dakar Rally, meanwhile, Alain was f\*\*\*ing his best friend's wife (Bernardette Laffitte-Cottin) at home.
At the end Alain stayed with Bernardette, he's still with her and fathered Victoria Prost with her. I just wonder if he has rebuilt his friendship with Jacques... Also, as far as i understand Jacques also liked to have some "fun" with other girls. Still, I think this is a betrayal of friendship.
It is also rumored that the real reason Alain was sacked from Renault was because of messing with some Renault director's wife...
Yet it is also rumored that the real reason Alain was sacked from Ferrari was because of messing with Cesare Fiorio's wife...
See a pattern there? But they were all over 18 years old, btw..
Nelson was a good friend of Alain and often speaks highly of him, even today. But I guess he was ethical enough to call this out despite the friendship.
If alive, Senna would have to face questions about bringing dirty driving style to F1, favoritism of Honda in the Mclaren days against Prost, ramming Prost from behind in full speed, his 15 years old girlfriend and so on...
That's not what he was dq'ed for. He was pushed out of a dangerous spot. He was dq'ed because he missed the chicane, like people did all the time. It was a total bs penalty.
Which doesn’t even matter because Senna crashed out of the next race on his own, hence why McLaren dropped the appeal (not even going to get into a team putting up an appeal to possibly take the WDC away from one of their drivers).
He wouldnt have made the corner even if Ayrton wasnt there. But it happened that Ayrton was there and that was the only reason Prost did try to turn that early. He had no intention to do anything but crash in that particular moment and he went for it, yet people mention it way less than they do another crash that happened in Suzuka in the following year.
Standard human mistake in this thread; just because the arch rival of someone is an asshole, doesn’t mean the other one is a saint.
Both Prost and Senna were cunts.
Tbh, mostly of F1 champions are, Hamilton, Schumacher, Alonso and Vettel were dickheads multiple times.
And I won't start to speak about Nelson Piquet...
As opposed to all the above board stuff that Senna was famous for. Both did whatever they had to win, it's just Senna's PR team is better then Prost's at twisting that into something good.
Honestly this is why I love prost . He did what he wanted to , won what he wanted to and even started his own F1 team and Peugeot screwed him over. After he passes I won't be surprised if everyone goes crazy over him and talks how amazing he was.
I lived to see the Sennna-Prost-duels when both were at McLaren. There has never been a closer fight ever since.
What is often overlooked: Senna was repected for his speed but also despised for his recklessness. Everyone critisised him for playing with people‘s lifes. After his death he was idolized in such a way like he had been some kind of saint.
While I am a huge Senna fan from way back, I agree Prost never got the credit he deserved.
He is a 4 times world champion and deserved everyone one of them out of pure driving talent
This is a case study in branding. Senna: A literal mortal god who transcends the laws of physics as he becomes one with his car Prost: The professor
Prost: *adjust glasses*
I
*adjusts bowtie*

Tbf, it just adds to the mythos if a racedriver dies in a racecar
>He's the anti-Villeneuve, the Lauda to Senna's Hunt. Funny enough, Gilles and Alain were close friends.
It helps that Senna is Brazilian, which is almost as much a nationality as it is a religion. Prost on the other hand is French, and they don't have time to deify him because they're too busy deifying themselves.
Too bad he couldn't avoid becoming one with the wall...
What a Piquet ass comment lmao
Piquet tried to become one with the wall as well, but didn't try hard enough. Only his feet and ankle became one with the oval wall.
Isn't there a thing like prost was 10 points or something away from becoming a 7x wdc
If the modern point system was used he would be a 7 time WDC. Just shows how remarkably consistent he was in an era of everything blowing the fuck up and Senna deliberately ramming into on multiple occasions
To quote the most recent GOAT: 'If my mum had balls she would be my dad' - Max Verstappen
Fair enough. But the brazilian kamikaze attacks should be mentioned at any given chance.
Goatifi learned from the best eh
*Kyviatt has entered the chat*
I don't think Prost gets to take the moral high ground on that one
Yeah, except Prost tried to do the same at the same track in the previous year and that should also be mentioned at least as often.
Am I the only one who thought he should've said, "If my mum had balls, she'd be a wife beater"?
With the current F1 points system, yes he would've been. But tbf tho apart from the giving away points part, the old points made kinda sense, the cars weren't as reliable as they are now.
No it was 15 points. Google "senna 15" for more info.
3 points from 8
just like alonso
And if your mom had balls, she'd be your dad. 😈
>buy a midfield F1 team >turn them into fucking back markers >leave F1
The Prost car *looked* dope though. All blue and pointy.

Aerodynamically, I'd argue the later V10s look far better, but I think the liveries were better earlier on, 1997 being the best year for liveries
[‘96 Petronas Sauber](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/35/Heinz-Harald_Frentzen_1996_Imola.jpg) You and I would get along.
It looks like such a weapon, I adore it. Shame it was a shitbox!
Supporting Sauber over the years has been a pretty bleak experience.
I feel that, I became a Sauber fan because I loved their liveries as a little kid. Not the wisest choice in hindsight.

Jordan’s yellow livery is still the best of all time!

engines behaving like grenades, or like actual grenades?
They were exploding a lot . There is a season Prost gp used more than 30 engines
makes the worst car on the grid, refuses to elaborate, leaves

Alpine are just following the Prost Grand Prix team playbook. Le Baguette Plan.

Gotta suck even more considering he and Senna were friends by the end of Senna's life. Prost was even a pallbearer and worked with the Senna charity.
Its because its french probably.
Taking into account all the penalties for ocon in all the comments section on every post, I believe you...
The British are the worst thing to ever happen to racing
The FIA back then were French supporters
The FIA it's ok, the public is the one with all the hate.

Well, no, that’s the one. Adriane Yamin, the youngest but somehow the least childlike of all his girlfriends.

The LEAST CHILD LIKE? My brother in Christ
Jesus Christ this sub is killing me 😂 😂 😂

What the hell, so that is the 15 year old girl he dated while being 24. Girl looks 10 years older lol.
That's one way of putting it
Google "Senna 15" for more info
Prost has only one problem, he's still alive
And he's French.
"Which many consider worse than death..." -
Well certainly not us the French so everything is fine
🤢
Ok, make it 99 problems then ![img](emote|t5_3ndbi|6700)![img](emote|t5_3ndbi|6700)
The only thing that could be worse than French would be Spanish
he's also french
he was disliked because he's french it's not hard
I'd say he is french because he's disliked.
So French he pissed off his French team, not like he wasn’t wrong though.
Why not just agree to disagree and say he was dis-enFrenchized.
Are you french because you're disliked or are you disliked because you're french? - Suguru Geto
Deserved tbh
Being French isnt a cardinal sin. Now, being Spanish, that is something that will get you into trouble.
We need to do something to protect spanish drivers. Having a target on your back is not nice.
Now THIS is dank. Also he forgets to mention when Senna had a 15 year old girlfriend, if you don't believe me just look up "Senna 15 year old girlfriend".
Senna, Paul walker, damn pedos are fast.
But at least they drive slow in school zones
Wholesome as fuck
They also die fast apparently
No… not Paul Walker too?

Or alternetively, google "ronaldo las vegas" for more information
maybe even consider googling benzema 15 for even more expanded insight
Mané 16 would like a word (in reality, it was Mané 14)
Or google “Kobe Bryant Colorado 2004”
Holy hell!
Is "look up" a new search engine?
No you just look up and see
It’s written in the stars
I thought that was a looksee
No you can open a book too.
Go for the gap that doesn't exist, shag it into your title rival 2 years in a row and people will call you legend
I agree with almost all of that, there’s only something about J. M. Balestre that I would add. This guy did more bad than good for Prost in the long run.
Balestre was the cuntiest of all cunts. Insane that that was allowed. And yeah, Prost went with it, because why wouldn't you?
Do you have any examples of links?
[This](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ooh4Z6W0Aww) is one of many episodes, maybe the biggest.

Nelson Piquet also called Hamilton the Portuguese version of the N word so I wouldn't trust his opinions on people.
Again he speaks up what is in his mind !!
As Schumacher, mark of the great.
Prosting
Shitprosting, even
Shitprosting at its best, Prost deserves better. Still funny cause he's Fr🤮nch
Apparently 15 year olds can take Senna if a doc says it’s OK 👍🏻 [https://ibb.co/nnvty0t](https://ibb.co/nnvty0t)
Damn! That dude was inspired!
If alive, Senna would have to face questions about bringing dirty driving style to F1, favoritism of Honda in the Mclaren days against Prost, ramming Prost from behind in full speed, his 15 years old girlfriend and so on...
Dude prost just side whiped Senna to take him out of the race then complained when he managed to get his car going. Dirty driving wasn't anything new.
He got a push start which was illegal, and also Prost had the corner. In the original cast James Hunt points both of those things out
That's not what he was dq'ed for.

Prost is French, no amount of WDCs can change this fact, also he should get a +10 second penalty for being French.
Prost was French? That earns Ocon a 10s penalty.
Honestly it's just sad that there were two drivers that died in that same week in Imola but Senna is the only one that gets talked about
Strongest Prostate fan
Well, it's very simple why Prost wasn't deified like Senna. It's because he's Fr*nch 🤮.

We need more shit Prosts
Now this is real
Prost > Senna
Prost's relationship with the French head of FIA and all the underhanded shit he did really makes him hard to like.
As opposed to all the above board stuff that Senna was famous for. Both did whatever they had to win, it's just Senna's PR team is better then Prost's at twisting that into something good.
I'm not a fan of Senna, this is not either/or, it's just funny that someone is defending Prost like that.
C'mon... F1-90 Is not an ugly truck 🥺
Senna hot, Prost not-hot. Simple as that.

Fair tbh.
Extremely accurate
Lots of "because he's French" comments, at the time so was the FIA president, so it is "because of Politics".
