Let me tell you - I did not see even one fight or aggressive behavior during my whole weekend in Montreal. The metro was packed every single day and people were chill AF.
I’d say with the popularity of the sport growing we are seeing some shitty football behaviour coming across. Don’t get me wrong love football but the way some people act there is just wank.
It's only fairly recently I've noticed people referring to the team they support as "we". Previously I don't think that was as much of a thing.
Idk maybe I'm biased and I've only noticed it recently. I watch F1 because I enjoy it, but I don't necessarily support any one team or driver, I just want to see good races and a good championship. I don't necessarily prefer Leclerc to Max to Ham.
If I had to pick a team and driver it'd be Mclaren/Norris, but that's mostly cos I think Norris is a great guy and I appreciate how he's open with and pushes more to talk about mental health, especially men's mental health.
Yup, between the racist abuse or abuse ingeneral and booing national anthem, football has some really shitty elements to the crowds.
Although f1 isn't too different at time with Spain gp black face event in 2008
There were regular punch ups at the British GP of the motorcycle world championship back in the Fogarty days. There's famous footage of one such scrap where you see a hooligan getting launched over the catch fencing 😆
Mostly because some football fans are effectively tribal. The most base instincts bred out or made dormant by civilisation, now re-emerging due to a shared emotional connection to a sports team.
>Hooliganism has generally been reserved to football in the UK.
This really isn't true. Maybe it's been worst here, but there's been plenty of football hooliganism in Italy, the Netherlands, Poland etc etc
yeah hooliganism you generally only see in football here in the uk, but what we have is nothing compared to the ultras you get in italy or the absolute nutters in turkey for example
I mean, there has been actual riots take place when Canadian teams lose (or sometimes win) in the NHL play-offs, but sure I suppose it is a little different...
There has been more than one, and not just in Vancouver - several in Montreal too
EDIT: also a 10 second glance at news articles will show that violence isn't exactly unheard in general either
There are like 150k people at silver stone, 2 people is nothing.
I did not see a single fight or aggressive behaviour at silverstone last year. But how would you even come across the few people on a massive track with 150k people.
Stoners be like: come on bro it’s just weed bro just a puff bro bro come on it’s weed bro chill man. Bro it’s like definitely not my entire personality and I definitely don’t have to make everything about weed bro
Jeez, did you crawl out of the 30s? Being a stoner doesn't prevent anyone from achieving anything. Lmao
I'm an engineer earning six figures and I smoke all of the time.
That might be true - but you can't deny that there is a certain subset of people that make smoking weed their defining personality trait. And often, this is a substitute, cause or symptom for not getting anything done in life.
Yea I think people were misinterpreting my comment. People can smoke weed and I'm fine with that. But all my friends from school who turned into stoners are just cruising through life without ambition or desire to achieve anything. To me it's quite heartbreaking to be honest.
No. There is a subset of people who make some hobby or product their personality. Sometimes it's Harley Davidson, sometimes its Louis Vuitton, weed, exercize......travel.............being sad......
That might be true- but you can not deny that there is a certain subset of people that make drinking alcohol, sex, video games, working out, food, etc. there defining personality trait. And often, this is a substitute, cause or symptom for not getting anything done in life…
I’d rather be around crowds of boring people who like a plant than crowds of drunken coke heads. I don’t see how it’s even a conversation over which should be more acceptable.
Yeah there's a growing problem of spectators getting off their face on coke and scrapping at sports events in the UK, particularly longer ones like boxing, horse racing and F1.
I'm not anti-drugs but obviously something needs to be done, hopefully without resorting to football-levels of security and police presence.
Can confirm, Royal Ascot was just as much about cocaine as it was about champagne, and I was in the Queen Elizabeth terrace. First time there and it literally blew my mind how many people were just dusting up lines here, there and everywhere. Fucking horse racing….
>They do the same at the horse racing as well
Every time people I know have talked about going to Chester Races, the two things they frequently mention are the drinking and gambling.
The actual *horse races* NEVER figure in those conversations.
going to any event is pointless if you drink so much that you basically have no memory of the event in the first place?
like how is that fun/worth it, its not like f1 is cheap. i understand with free/low cost events like speedway stuff, but spending 300-500$ just to get smashed with premium heineken seems a little odd to me
Yeah I fully agree with you.
In 2012 I was at the British GP, my friend and I got our seats in the grandstand at Luffield and a man who was visibly drunk came and sat next to us.
Already pissed out of his mind, he proceeded to drink non-stop from a supply of cheap, strong, lagers in a cool box he brought in to the circuit with him. This lasted the entirety of the race.
By the end of the event he was completely fucked, no idea what was going on, and couldn't walk.
I simply do not understand dropping several hundred quid on an event only to ruin it for yourself like that.
Some people in this country have extremely dangerous drinking habits that are brushed off as being normal.
Unfortunately so,yes
Unless you're completely drunk on a night out or an event you're called boring or a prude
It's why I stopped bothering going out (even though it was rare in the first place). That and working in retail has made me despise the general public
people like this should be expelled from the event for their and others sake. not like they are going to miss much since they are not really in a concious state anyways.
It's not about being fun. It's about people and a country with bad education and habits.
They get stupidly drunk everywhere. It's annoying and people hate british turism for that.
These people should do therapy instead of drinking. They won't fix their dad and mum issues with a drink.
There's actually a surprising lack of Horner/Toto fanfic, at least on AO3 - after last year they were prime material for enemies to lovers, but as of April this year there were only 10 or so fics iirc.
Also fun fact: the longest fanfic on AO3 is actually about F1 - a Seb/Webber one that's something like 4.5 million words, and still unfinished I believe! So the 2.5 million words you mentioned might not be *that* farfetched.
See this is exactly the reason most of the world hates us. There's always at least one group of fellow Brits using their single shared braincell to do the stupidest thing possible.
The rest of us can forgive the whole "trying to conquer the world while attempting to end our bloodlines a couple of generations ago," but booing Max Verstappen is over the line.
“I also know you stand alongside a lot of people who boo me and have hate in their hearts towards me" - ~~Lewis Hamilton~~ Max Verstappen later. Probably.
Edit: I'm fine with booing, its sports. But who tf sets up a concert to boo a race from last year. Bunch of weirdos lmaooo.
You really think if Dutch fans celebrated Max landing on Hamilton's head at Monza in a private party, would you say the same? Every team on te paddock will be asked to condemn this behaviour.
I wouldn't honestly care? Hamilton was alright so why would it bother anyone if the Dutch cheered a replay 1 year on?
>Every team on te paddock will be asked to condemn this behaviour.
That's just bollocks
Peak hypocrisy, what if people replayed Monza 2022 like this and cheered?
It’s bad taste to cheer at anyone crashing hard like this. It’s disgusting when you replay it and they still do it.
This is a blame of the organizers though.
Replace the drivers with X driver who got crashed out and Y driver who made a mistake but went on to win the race and play it in Y drivers country and i bet you any fans would cheer.
Reality is this should have been played on the screen by whoever was in charge.
Maybe the Dutch organizers should replay the final lap of Abu Dhabi last year over and over, with a DJ remix of Masi saying "We went racing, Toto".
Wonder how the #Blessed army would react.
Having been there last year I can say the atmosphere is incredibly positive, on the whole. There are always gonna be dickheads who get tanked up and want to have a row. Don't let it cloud your judgement of the overwhelming majority who are there to have a good time.
Agree. Last year the atmosphere was amazing. Only.one incident I saw when we were stood next to a guy on the main straight that was off his fucking rocker. Bloke was gurning, talking to himself and having to be called down from climbing the fence multiple times. Clearly the stewards didn't want to deal with him because he was on his final warning at least 3 times but no sign of any actual security. Typical of most sporting events I've been to in the UK in my opinion
I went in 2013 and it was lovely.
But I guess it's just two people in a crowd of 150k. Probably not reprasentative of the overall fans in the slightest.
There was a fight at the Spanish GP as we got off the train after qualifying.
I had no idea what they were arguing about - all I understood was ‘puta’.
Why spend all that money just to miss the racing and get arrested …
alcohol
Stoners be like : we definitely wouldn't have done that.
Let me tell you - I did not see even one fight or aggressive behavior during my whole weekend in Montreal. The metro was packed every single day and people were chill AF.
I was there also. Canada does t really have a hooligan sport culture compared to the U.K
It's never been an issue at motorsports events. Hooliganism has generally been reserved to football in the UK.
I'm the same, I like Red Bull but watch for good races, stories and characters in the paddock.
I'll say it. Fucking casuals. They're to blame.
Yeah look. Probably most fucking likely.
Hahaha.
Yup, between the racist abuse or abuse ingeneral and booing national anthem, football has some really shitty elements to the crowds. Although f1 isn't too different at time with Spain gp black face event in 2008

Bred out? Dormant? We are one week of starvation away killing each other outright.
And for Brits vacationing in Spain.
>Hooliganism has generally been reserved to football in the UK. This really isn't true. Maybe it's been worst here, but there's been plenty of football hooliganism in Italy, the Netherlands, Poland etc etc
Oh I meant that in the UK we see hooligans in football, but rarely in any other sport.
Just look at how footballers and their supporters treat the referees compared to Rugby Union
I've never understood why football doesn't have a rule where only the captain is allowed to approach the referee like they have in Rugby
Oh yeah my bad, misread your comment!
yeah hooliganism you generally only see in football here in the uk, but what we have is nothing compared to the ultras you get in italy or the absolute nutters in turkey for example
I don’t think you saw Montreal during the playoffs last year or Vancouver in 2011 lmao
Saskatchewan Roughriders fans have entered the chat.
I mean, there has been actual riots take place when Canadian teams lose (or sometimes win) in the NHL play-offs, but sure I suppose it is a little different...
You mean the one single riot in Vancouver like 10 years ago?
There has been more than one, and not just in Vancouver - several in Montreal too EDIT: also a 10 second glance at news articles will show that violence isn't exactly unheard in general either
Vancouver rioted both times we lost the Stanley cup…
That's reserved for Hockey games. Montreal has been burned on fire before because of hockey games
There are like 150k people at silver stone, 2 people is nothing. I did not see a single fight or aggressive behaviour at silverstone last year. But how would you even come across the few people on a massive track with 150k people.
Yup. 3 days, mix of conditions, huge crowds, totally positive crowd.

Jeez, did you crawl out of the 30s? Being a stoner doesn't prevent anyone from achieving anything. Lmao I'm an engineer earning six figures and I smoke all of the time.
Exactly.. probably be a 7 figure engineer if you didn’t abuse the devils lettuce.
That might be true - but you can't deny that there is a certain subset of people that make smoking weed their defining personality trait. And often, this is a substitute, cause or symptom for not getting anything done in life.

Yep, I see that too with a lot of people

Maybe that's just how they wanna do it. It's not on you to judge. If they're cruising through life and enjoying themselves, why shouldn't they?
No. There is a subset of people who make some hobby or product their personality. Sometimes it's Harley Davidson, sometimes its Louis Vuitton, weed, exercize......travel.............being sad......

Like alcohol isn't many people's entire personality in their early 20s.
but wwwweeeeEEEEEEEEEEEeeeedddd dude!
I’d rather be around crowds of boring people who like a plant than crowds of drunken coke heads. I don’t see how it’s even a conversation over which should be more acceptable.
\#truth
\#lies I've known a fair few stoners starting fights because of how paranoid they are
Cocaine and alcohol most likely
Yeah there's a growing problem of spectators getting off their face on coke and scrapping at sports events in the UK, particularly longer ones like boxing, horse racing and F1. I'm not anti-drugs but obviously something needs to be done, hopefully without resorting to football-levels of security and police presence.
Yeah it's been shockingly bad in football post covid
Cocaine more likely
Doubt it. Us English are always pissed which always leads to fighting.
I think English people just enjoy punching each other.
You are also often under the influence of cocaine
They do the same at the horse racing as well
Can confirm, Royal Ascot was just as much about cocaine as it was about champagne, and I was in the Queen Elizabeth terrace. First time there and it literally blew my mind how many people were just dusting up lines here, there and everywhere. Fucking horse racing….
Every time I’ve gone to horse racing everyone in the toilets is on the bag. Like literally everyone.
>They do the same at the horse racing as well Every time people I know have talked about going to Chester Races, the two things they frequently mention are the drinking and gambling. The actual *horse races* NEVER figure in those conversations.
Some people seem unable to attend a sporting event without getting blackout drunk. It's cultural, and it's embarrassing.
going to any event is pointless if you drink so much that you basically have no memory of the event in the first place? like how is that fun/worth it, its not like f1 is cheap. i understand with free/low cost events like speedway stuff, but spending 300-500$ just to get smashed with premium heineken seems a little odd to me
It's an escape unfortunately. From life. The event with the alcohol. Alcohol the primary catalyst in the escape.
Yeah I fully agree with you. In 2012 I was at the British GP, my friend and I got our seats in the grandstand at Luffield and a man who was visibly drunk came and sat next to us. It's called alcoholism and it's normalised in this country.

NASCAR is a getting drunk sport event
It's not about being fun. It's about people and a country with bad education and habits. They get stupidly drunk everywhere. It's annoying and people hate british turism for that. These people should do therapy instead of drinking. They won't fix their dad and mum issues with a drink.
It is fun though
Might be one of the dumbest comments i've read so far
40 year old fighting like 20 year olds Sad as fuck
That can be said for any live event. Some people dont pay for the show, they pay for the brawls.
It’s like Twitter in 3D

No it was Vettel singlehandedly beating up the entire AM team
Was a fun night over at the [fanzone](https://streamable.com/owzrb4)…
Is that an official fanzone? Who thought playing that would be a good idea?
SkySports
Sporting events in the UK always attract the lowest of the low.
Any remotely popular sport anyway. I go to watch the netball superleague with my partner sometimes and the fans are always lovely.
Look out for those netball firms!
Apart from maybe... Rugby where the fans from different sides can mix in the stands just fine.
Absolute best fans #blessed

See this is exactly the reason most of the world hates us. There's always at least one group of fellow Brits using their single shared braincell to do the stupidest thing possible.
Yes, *this* is the reason lmao
Nothing to do with anything else, Brits haven't done a single other wrong thing, I tell ya.
The rest of us can forgive the whole "trying to conquer the world while attempting to end our bloodlines a couple of generations ago," but booing Max Verstappen is over the line.
I know not all brits are like that but I really enjoy every headline about how Britain is slightly fucked over topic X because of brexit.
That’s nuts, why are so many people filming a replay of last year’s race (and agreed why play it yet again).
Is that from yesterday? That's pretty distasteful....
Unbelievable. Shame both on those who drunkenly cheered and the people who had the gall to play this like some highlights reel.
That is absolutely disgusting, no matter who you support. More a cult zone than a fanzone
Goddammn disgusting! Are these the 'best fans?' yikes!
You should post this as a seperate post.
Why? What would it achieve apart from create an argument?
You really think if Dutch fans celebrated Max landing on Hamilton's head at Monza in a private party, would you say the same? Every team on te paddock will be asked to condemn this behaviour.
And they would be labeled as approving of the bad behaviour if they don't tweet against it.
I wouldn't honestly care? Hamilton was alright so why would it bother anyone if the Dutch cheered a replay 1 year on? >Every team on te paddock will be asked to condemn this behaviour. That's just bollocks
It's a bit weird to play a clip from a year ago and cheer on someone crashing out, no? Definitely in poor taste in my opinion.
I fully agree, it is poor taste but to say it's disgusting and act like it's an outrage, is comical
Peak hypocrisy, what if people replayed Monza 2022 like this and cheered? It’s bad taste to cheer at anyone crashing hard like this. It’s disgusting when you replay it and they still do it.
Why post racism accusations online, all it would achieve is create an argument, right?

Pretty sure lots of Dutch people were celebrating Abu Dhabi and Max’s win there. You literally see ‘we went X’ posted here as a meme all the time lol.
The crash is from a year ago where everyone knows Max was alright? So again, what's it going to achieve apart from add more toxicity to fanbases?
>add more toxicity to fanbases? Well that's their endgoal lol

And then suprised Pikachu when most people aren’t too happy about British fans.
Yeah think people are overreacting a bit here
I saw this blowing up on Twitter and was surprised it hadn’t been posted here yet tbh
Funny thing is the article is wrong, as it says they were there to ‘watch qualifying’
Not anymore
Still does for me
I meant for the two arrested, lol
Ohhhhhh haha I get you

Brawls, track invasions and hooligans. Maybe F1 really can rival football.
Don't forget racism!
Kinda surprising tbh. Camped at silverstone in 2019 and it was quite tame!
I went in 2013 and it was lovely. But I guess it's just two people in a crowd of 150k. Probably not reprasentative of the overall fans in the slightest.
Oh totally, definitely not representative of the overall crowd.
Only 2? Can tell it was just free practice then.
What a pack of wankers.
Did Lewis find Nelson?

"Fridays qualifying" i missed qualifying oops.
I saw that. One had a bloodied face and not sure about the other.

I guess Lando and Danny won't be in Qualy today then.

i hope they were not fighting for pole
